Iphoto does not import pictures or detect them.

Hi, we have a tutoring program where I work and we wanted to use apple's "fixup" pictures in the class. To make the experience more realistic for the users, we plan on putting the pictures onto memory card readers (with memory cards already in them). We would like to recreate putting the memory card readers into the computers and importing from iphoto. The memory card readers are: Multi Flash Media Reader.
We first tried to make a folder called DCIM for iphoto to recognize when we open up iphoto. When we had this initially setup iphoto would recognize if you put ONE photo into the folder at a time (From the computer to removable disk). However when we put in multiple pictures (say all of the pictures from the "Cayman Trip") iphoto came up with an error stating that basically that it could not recognize the photo type. When we looked at the name of the file paths however, it was not the file path that we had set up. Unfortunately I can't recreate the error right now because we have reformatted the photo disk in hopes that that would resolve the issue.
Now that we have reformatted we have recreated the DCIM Folder, and now Iphoto will not detect the photos in the folder at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a camera that you could use to reformat the card, take a few shots and then replace those files with your jpgs? See if that would clean up the path and recognition.
However, you might want to teach the students to import the photos manually into iPhoto as that's a safer way of doing it, particularly if you're coming direct from a camera. That saves wear and tear on the camera and battery and avoids possible shutdown of the camera due to low battery in the middle of an import. That can damage a library. Also never have iPhoto erase the memory card after import as there have been too many reports of incomplete or no import and complete erasures.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto does NOT import " .pictClipping " files ?

    Hi,
I copied pictures of artists from Amazon on the Web and put them together with the songs in iTunes Artwork. So far so good.
I wanted to import these pics in iPhoto. I dragged them on the desktop en tried to import them via iPhoto 'Add to library'.
Didn't work. iPhoto does NOT import " .pictClipping " files.
What did I do wrong ? What can I do ?
How can I get these pics in iPhoto ?
Thanks for some light in my darkness...

    Hi JOhn,
Dragging the album cover out of iTunes either by the album art window or by the "get info" window will just give you a clipping file that cannot be opened by a graphic program. It is just a clipping that Finder will open.
Did you download the images from Amazon and save them to your hard drive, or did you copy/paste them from Amazon to iTunes song "get info" window?
If you just did a copy.paste, then I suggest you go back to Amazon and download the images to your hard drive. then import into iPhoto. There might be some third party programs that will download the art while your songs are playing on iTunes to make it easier for you. they usually put them on a folder on your hard drive somewhere.
there's even an Applescript program to export your artwork from iTunes and copy it to an image file at a specified location.

There are all kinds of ways of doing this so search around Version Tracker for "itunes album art" for other programs to make it easier for you.

  • Iphoto does not import all items from camera

I have been importing photos into Iphoto from my canon SD300. I have noticed that on occaissions it has skipped a few files while importing. In particular it has skipped movie clips. When the camera is connected Iphoto says it is ready to import and tells you the number of images and movie clips, and it recognizes all of them. However, once the import function is over on the last occaision I noticed that two clips and one image was not imported. I manage to get the missed image/clips by inserting the memeroy card in a card reader and dragging the missed image/movie clips into Iphoto.
I would appreciate if any one knows why Iphoto does not import all the items from the camera even though it recognizes that they exist and how I should fix this problem.
    Thanks.

    Hi imac2,
I don't know why iPhoto skips some of your files. I can tell you that I use Image Capture to download my images and video clips. My video clips from my Canon can get quite large (over 1010 mg). iPhoto can import smaller clips that digital camera made, but now a lot of the newer camera can create very large video clips and I don't think iPhoto can handle importing them.
Once I download my images and video clips I put them in dated folders. This makes it much easier to back up the video clips and images. I then import the folders of images into iPhoto. I like having more control.

  • IPhoto does not update pictures

Any pictures I change in an external editor, I saved it as the orginal file would update in iPhoto, i.e. the picture would change to reflect the changes.
In 6, it does not, if you select it and go full screen the corrected image will show, but in the main window it remains as the old picture.
Is there a fix for this?

    Gary:
To have iPhoto recognize edits made my a 3rd party editor like Photoshop Elements you must set iPhoto's preferences (in the General section) to open that 3rd party editor when you double click on the thumbnail. Then if you edit and save with the same file name and extension iPhoto will recognize the edit, both in the media window and in the thumbnail window. If you create a layered file or do an edit that requires a different extension you must either flatten the file and save in the original format or save to the desktop and import the new file.
If you want to have both the 3rd party editor and iPhoto's without having to go into the preferences each time just set the preferences back, to edit in the main window. Then when you want to use the 3rd party editor just Control-click on the thumbnail and select Open in external editor from the drop down menu. That way you can have the best of both worlds.

  • IPhoto does not import from iPhone

I can not import my iPhone pics anymore. Even when the phone is not attached to the iMAC iPhoto shows "Arthur's iPhone" on the left of the screen. On the right side I see 213 empty pictures although I have deleted everything from my iPhone. With empty I mean thesquare of the picture is there but no image in it.
On my wife's powerbook no problems with the same iPhone.
Can i reset iPhoto or re-install it ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto does not import correct pictures

Using either my Canon camera or IPhone 6 plus, when I try to import new photos to my MacBook Pro, everything in the process works fine, the selected pics appear to be importing correctly and show up on the import screen. But when the import is finished and I am prompted to keep or delete photos from the camera or the IPhone, after I select one or the other, a set of the same number of pics show up on the Last Import screen but they are a completely different set of pics from what I imported; they appear to be randomly selected from my library of past photos. And, the pics I actually imported are no where to be found in my photo library. And, when I click on Last Import from the tab list, all I get are these random set of old pics. Frustrated! Any ideas?.....thnx.....Lew

Not sure how to rebuild IPhoto once I've done the alt key and command key re-launch of IPhoto....
Did you hold down the alt key and command key together long enough? Hold the keys down, until you see the First Aid Panel.
Only then let go of the keys and click "Rebuild Thumbnails", and if necessary the other options Larry recommended.

  • IPhoto does not import video from iPhone 4

We've been battling this problem for a while now. We have two iPhone 4's and any time we import photos to iPhoto, we have to select photos individually, making sure to NOT select any videos taken with the iPhone 4, in order to get them to import to iPhoto. If there is a video in the set, all photos after that are reported as unrecognized format and won't import. We can then select those photos that didn't import and reimport them and it works. Importing videos, either single videos or groups, or when mixed in with photos just doesn't work. Every time it fails with the unrecognized format error. We are able to import directly from a flip video camera, or if we first transfer the videos from the iphone to the hard drive using a different utility, but when we then import those files into iPhoto, they come in, but without the usual thumbnail image (they show up in the library as black).
This problem has been going on since iPhoto 09. We bought the 11 upgrade hoping it would fix this problem. It made it a little better (we used to not be able to import anything from the phones), but it still doesn't work for video. If it were just one of the phones I'd say it was the phone, but both phones have the problem. We've been seeing this problem for many months now.

Believe me, we've tried it all. Resetting, restarting, reinstalling, clearing preferences, caches, resetting databases, removing all photos off the iPhone and starting from zero. I've read probably 15 different threads on the subject and tried at least as many solutions. In a few instances the problem got better...for 1 sync. Then it cropped up again. I tried syncing to a fresh iPhoto database, and the problem came back for that one as well. I'm really hoping that Apple is working on a solution for this. We've put a lot of effort into our iPhoto archives and the main reason we bought the iPhone's was for the camera (even suffering through AT&T's questionable coverage for it). It doesn't seem like we are the only ones having this trouble.

  • IPhoto does not import rotated images from camera

I plugged in my CF card to a reader and first looked at all my photos. Those that needed rotation I fixed with preview. Then when I opened iPhoto, it didn't recognize any of their file formats. Is there a good workaround?

I would not mess with them on the card - use image capture to bring them to the Mac disk and then rotate the ones needing rotation (and rename, etc) and then import to iPhoto

  • IPhoto does not import HD video/MTS files for Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5.

Hello, everyone. I'm using iPhoto '11 on an iMac i7. I recently bought the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, which records HD video (AVCHD Lite). When I insert the memory card into my iMac, it recognizes and imports all photos. However, the videos are left on the memory card, and I cannot even view them in iPhoto. When looking directly in the memory card, I can see the videos (they are MTS files), but nothing will play them. Is there other software I must install to be able to view/edit these video files. I'd like to see them in iPhoto, and then edit them in iMovie like I was able to with my standard definition camera. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same camera as you. You can import the files, but you have to convert them manually first, witch takes a couple of secounds.
    1. Download and install the automator script from this blog and put it in your dock http://blog.sharkus.com/2010/04/avchd-lite-iphoto-importing.html
    2. locate the folder /Private/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM on your memory card
    3. Drag your desired videofile (e.g. 000001.mts) on the automator script you put in your dock in step 1.
    4. whait (a couple of secounds, depending file size)
    5. Drag your new videofile (e.g. 000001.mts.m4v) to iphoto
    6. Finished
Do not try to convert more than two files a once, then the script doesn't work properly.
I hope apple will include support for mts-files very very soon!!

  • AVCHD - Iphoto does not import videos taken with Panasonic DMC-TZ7

    Hi,
I come from the Iphoto forum in which I was told that if Quicktime can support AVCHD format, then I can import the videos taken with my camera (Panasonic DMC-TZ7 making ACVHD lite) directly into my Iphoto library. I found that easy to be able to look at all pictures and videos in the same library/software.
Do you know when quicktime is supposed to be updated ?
    Regards,

Thanks for this very quick answer.
Do you have any idea when this format is supposed to be supported by Iphoto : until now I found so nice to be able to have in my Iphoto library both pictures and videos...
I am quite new to Mac and being obliged to use two softwares for "the same" purpose make me feel like going back to the PC universe !

  • Iphoto does not import movies from my samsung nv24

...please help me, otherwise i have to buy a new camera....

This issue has been reported before and arises because of some anomaly between Samsung's non-standard way of using Time Code and Apple's over stringent adherence to standards.
Probably don't have to buy a new camera though. Just use something else to organise the movies.

  • Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

Why does iPhoto not recognize the .jpg pics from a Kodak C875 now? I can stick my memory card in the iMac and import them that way, but iPhoto will not import the pics from the camera.

There have been many issues reported with Kodak cameras - serach the forums for them
Actually the best practise is to use a card reader to import your photos, verify that they are imported ocrrectly and wait at least one backup cycle and then use the camera's format command to reformat the card and erase it - this assures no lost photos and always having the card properly formatted

    In fact, you did not.
We had NO idea if it was a photo or a pocket-camera movie you were trying to import from iPhoto.
You also didn't describe what happens when you try to import.

this just started happening when i updated to "IMOVIE 11"
OK, that's a bit more information.
iMovie was probably already running when you imported the pictures into iPhoto and wasn't aware of the last import.
Try to quit iMovie and iPhoto, then launch iMovie again. The last import should show up.
Please take a few seconds to proof read your posts and also make then easy to read (no large letters, no underlining, no double line breaks in the middle of a sentence etc).

  • IPhoto does not remember faces when I name them in another person's batch

I have been tagging faces in iPhoto 11 for the last few hours on my Retina MBP. In severeal cases I used the option of naming the face when it appeared in the wrong person's batch (ctrl+click > name). But then the "named" photos do not appear in that person's list of photos.
I.e. - I have 26 potential photos of Bob. I go through them and see a photo of Dan. I ctrl+click on that photo and choose "name" and then type in Dan. After I am done with Bob's photos I go to Dan's folder (via the Faces corkboard) and I do not see the photo I named before anywhere.

Faces has identified the wrong person.
Actually iPhoto does not identify people - iPhoto suggests and you confirm or reject so you confirmed incorrectly (which happens to all of us)
How do I re-assign to the correct person?
double click on the photo to open it and click on "name" and type the correct name for the person
Mary and Jane are in a group picture and have been identified by iPhoto, not me.
In Mary's Faces album, Jane's picture is the thumbnail. In a way, the group picture is correct. I would rather have all of Mary's thumbnails show Mary.
The choice offered by iPhoto is accept or reject. Going into Edit for the pictures does not give the option to identify faces.
If you reject the person will remain un-named- and in the confirm names mode (starting with version 8.0.2) if you right click (control click) on the photo you can accept, reject or name
I am reluctant to reject because the group picture may not show up again.
You can always make a smart album with name is unnamed and find all photos with unnamed people (started in version 8.0.2)

I am trying to copy photos from an iPad to a Mac Air, but iPhoto does not recognize them. Please forgive the ignorance, but we have just started moving to apple products and I know nothing about them. Do you have to use PhotoStream to do this?

How did the photos that you want to copy off get on the iPad  ? To copy photos to your computer that were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then see this page - on a Mac you should be able to use iPhoto, Aperture or Image Capture
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app on your iPad such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.
