IPhoto doesn't import

Hi everyone, I could really use some help.
I recently acquired a new MacBook Pro (i7, Snow Leo 10.6.3) to replace my old one (MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo, SnowLeo 10.6.3). So I wanted to take my photos from my iPhoto 08 to the new iPhoto 09. So I copied my library to an external drive and then moved it to the pictures folder and replaced the 09's library (iPhoto wasn't open).
Then I opened iPhoto 09 and a dialog box said it needed to update the library to work with the 09 version. So I clicked yes, it was updated, and everything appeared to be normal. So I clicked on Faces, and it started to analyze the +3400 photos. It said it would take 10 minutes... but then after 5 minutes stopped. So I guessed it has finished faster, and went to Events to edit my photos and although the thumbnails appear fine, when I double-clicked they went black.
I know a lot of people has had this problem because I've scoured every forum I've found with ideas to solve this problem, and I've tried all the following:
- Trying to restore the images to their originals from inside iPhoto
- Rebuild/First aid the library (both with iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager)
- Extract the photos with Library Manager and reimport them (with the File-->Import menu option)
- Extract the photos by hand (opening the library package contents and copying them to other location) and then reimport them (both droping and with menu option)
- Erase the library (without making a backup... I know... bad idea) making a new one and trying to import them
- Run a batch on Photoshop CS4 to make sure all of them had de sRGB profile then reimport them (this gave me an error when exporting from Ps that said something along the line of "Cannot make preview file because of problem with Quicktime" but the photos are viewable in any application including Preview, Ps, Illustrator and even Safari)
- Uninstall and reinstall iPhoto 09 (including library cache files)
- Uninstall Flip4Mac (I read in a topic here it solved someone's problem)
- Using Preview to 'Save As' the photos
- Resizing the photos
- Changing the color profile of the photos
- Changing the photos to other image type (from jpg to png, tiff, gif, bmp)
And probably a couple other ideas I found around, still iPhoto won't import the images of any kind.
So I took the photos from the MacBook i7 to the iMac (Core 2 Duo, SnowLeo 10.6.4) I have at work, on the same external drive I used to take them into the i7. The iPhoto in the office imports all of them fine, each and everyone of the +3400 photos. Without a problem. So I'm guessing there's a problem with my MacBook... which ****** me off because it has 3 weeks of use... one of which I've been trying to solve this.
¿Anyone has any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your time.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. *Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. *Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. *A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. *A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. *A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
*If none of these help*:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • IPhoto Doesn't Import All of My Raw Images

I am using a Canon 10D (which is a supported device) to take pictures in RAW format (".crw" extension). I also have a relatively new MacBook with iPhoto 6 and have downloaded all the recent iPhoto updates. The problem is that when attempt to I import my RAW images, iPhoto only imports the first 3 or 4 images and then stops importing the rest. The screen looks as if it is continuing to import the images, but nothing is actually happening. Once I stop the import process, only the first few images that were imported show up in my library and the rest remain on my camera as if nothing ever happened.
Those first 3 or 4 images that I am able to import look great and I have no problems viewing and editing them in iPhoto. Does anyone have any advice on what I should try?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Are there movies shot with the camera on there as well? This can often cause this issue.
    Two possible workarounds:
    1. Use Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) to copy the files to the desktop, and then import them from there.
    2. Use a USB card reader to mount the card on the desktop, then import them from there.

  • IPhoto doesn't import after moving iPhoto library back to original (?) spot

    Hello:
Because I needed space on my original drive, I moved iPhoto library to another drive and then moved it back. iPhoto works perfectly well - It automatically loads my photos. But - when I attempt to import from my Canon Digital Rebel, it won't do it, giving a message that these files (all 7 photos in the camera) may be corrupt.
However - the photos do import correctly on my wife's Mac.
I am thinking that I did not put the iPhoto library back in exactly the right spot.
    Where should it go?
Oh - and Happy New Year!

    Hi Iann,
There is really no right spoet as you can place the iPhoto Library folder almost anywhere in your Users folder. The Pictures folder is the default location for the folder.
What I need to know is, when you moved the library to another spot, did you open iPhoto when it was there? And when you moved back to the original spot, did iPhoto open?
When you move the iPhoto Library folder, you must then launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed. iPhoto will then tell you that it can't find the library , and do you want to open another one or create a new one. You must then choose to open another one and navigate to where you moved it, then highlight it in the window, then click "open"

  • How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto'09 doesn't import the video made by Kodak DX6490 since update 10.6

Iphoto'09 doesn't import the video i made on my Kodak DX6490 since i've installed mac os 10.6 with an update from 10.5.8
The videos i made are .mov and with iphoto'09 and Leopard 10.5.8, it was possible to import them.
Have you seen this problem ? Any idea to correct it ?

    TD,
My comment regarding this problem was only meant to support your solution (test), not disparage it.
I was briefly trying to explain that I believe (anecdotally) Snow Leopard is not functioning correctly in regard to movie imports using normal import procedures.
At first I assumed it was a problem with iPhoto 06, and ordered a copy of iLife 09 for my daughter. Then I found this thread and IMHO it confirmed my workaround (kludge) solution. I would wager that she will have the same problem with iPhoto 09.
    It should "just work."
    I will report the outcome.

  • IPhoto won't import photos, doesn't detect camera

I've never had a problem uploading pictures from either one of my Canon digital cameras. However, when I now connect either camera to my computer via a USB cord, the drive doesn't appear anywhere and iPhoto doesn't recognize the camera, nor does it prompt me to import the photos. When I tried the Image Capture software, it told me that nothing was connected. The CF card is fine (it reads on a digital picture frame), and the USB connection is fine (it detected a video camera). I couldn't drag images from the camera to anywhere else, since the computer doesn't realize the camera is connected. (And yes, the camera is on and all camera settings are as they usually are.)
    Any thoughts?

YES! Found a working work-around to import 168 photo's taken in Ecuador with my HP Photosmart M637.
FYI, my observations and found workaround
    - Connecting camera -> iPhoto 8.1.1 starts up but doesn't display the connected camera to enable import
    - Overnight -> iPhoto still doesn't display the connected camera
    - Use Picasa.app (as suggested in this discussion (txs for that) -> configured OSX to start up Picasa, which indeed happened when connecting the camera but camera is not displayed to enable import
    - Used ImageCapture vs 6.0 (as suggested in this discussion) -> YES! It shows my camera and enables import into iPhoto vs 8.1.1 which I have done so my urgent problem has been solved ...

  • Iphoto doesn't ask me if i would like to keep the photos i import on my camera or if i would like to delete them? how do i get it to ask? newest version of iphoto. iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

iphoto doesn't ask me if i would like to keep the photos i import on my camera or if i would like to delete them? how do i get it to ask? newest version of iphoto. iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Iphoto doesn't ask me if i would like to keep the photos i import on my camera or if i would like to delete them? how do i get it to ask?

iphoto doesn't ask me if i would like to keep the photos i import on my camera or if i would like to delete them? how do i get it to ask?
    newest version of iphoto.

    Ask in the iPhoto forum.

  • IPhoto doesn't ask to delete imported photos

For years, iPhoto on my MacBook Pro always asked if I wanted to delete the photos from the camera after importing them. For the last year or so, iPhoto 11 didn't always do that with my previous camera, although it sometimes did. Since I got the new Canon Rebel T3i, it never asks after if I want to delete them after importing them. I tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist my user library after seeing other comments referring to this, but iPhoto still doesn't ask. Each time I import, I have to reformat the SDHC card from the camera's menu, which works, but is somewhat of a pain, when iPhoto has the capability to erase these images.
Any new suggestions would be welcome!

My workaround is to upload the photos to a folder on the Desktop, name the folder as I want the event to be named and drag the folder into the open iPhoto window to import them.  I found that importing from the hard drive would let iPhoto eliminate duplicates when coming directly from the camera would not.
I don't believe it a bug in iPhoto as so few users are reporting this. Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • IPhoto doesn't recognize pictures on card / already imported pictures

    Hi all,
iPhoto '09 (latest version) on my wife's MBP (CoreDuo, early 2006, latest Snow Leopard) has always worked well for het (about 35,000 pix in the database). Last week, out of a sudden, it stopped recognizing new images when a card is plugged in (tested with two different SD cards from two different cameras). Manual importing works, but it won't recognize already imported images anymore, it just imports them again.
I already re-built iPhoto's database (by holding alt + cmd when starting up iPhoto), but it didn't change anything.
This is really strange - can anyone help us here?
    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Thomas.

Well, I was too fast yesterday. Nothing is solved.
Today my wife said that when she plugged in the card from her new camera (8 GB), iPhoto starts up but then showed the spinning wheel for 10 minutes, no pictures are shows. Then she got impatient and imported manually again.
I tested again tonight with the 8 GB SDHC card - all tests yesterday were done with a 2 GB standard SD card. And really, regardless what card I plug in, iPhoto doesn't start up. Even changing the program to start up when a camera is attached (see above) doesn't help.
So I created a new user account. Plugged in the 2 GB card, iPhoto starts and shows all pix. Fine. Closed iPhoto, ejected the card and plugged in the 8 GB one. iPhoto starts up and - just as described above - only shows the spinning wheel but no pictures within 10 minutes (364 images are on the card). Closed iPhoto again, and now it doesn't even start up anymore, no matter which of the two cards I plug in.
Can it be that iPhoto has a problem with the 8 GB SDHC card? We have been using this only for 3 weeks now, when we bought a new camera. Before the 2 GB SD card was used. However, iPhoto worked well with the 8 GB card for the first two weeks, and I haven't tried if re-formatting will help.
    Any comments?
    Thank you!
    Best wishes,
    Thomas.

  • Iphoto doesn't recognize jpg's and won't import pictures

Recently updated from iPhoto 09 to 11 and iPhoto won't import pictures from Kodak camera. Says it doesn't recognize file type "jpg". Imported pic last week from same camera just fine. Also upgraded to OSX 10.6.8– this is when the problem started. I don't want a work around solution, as I know there is a fix for this. Just can't find it.

There isn't a fix. Workaround: use a USB Card Reader.

Yes....trouble with itunes too. Every time I download a new piece of music from the itunes store, itunes crashes. It doesn't import the file into my library. It doesn't even play. Here's the error message I get:
Do you think 3rd party software can fix this issue. As I mentioned above, not even the boot disk is fixing this problem. ((Perhaps a trip to Apple store???))
    Thanks again for your input.

  • Iphoto unable to import images from card or from desktop

A recent update to the operating system for my imac with Maverick has rendered my iphoto incapable of importing images, creates a mirror shift of the frontpage as it is opened up and requires a long time for iphoto to open. When I try to import a photo from the desktop or from a card the program spins into dysfunction and I am forced to force quit. Program functionality seems to be impaired as I look for images, select, etc. Permissions verified and fixed in Utility disk. Restart computer several times.....I would be grateful for assistance. Kind regards to the community.....HP

Well that suggests the issue is with the main Library. So

  • IPhoto shows and imports triplicates (triple duplicates) of iPhone photos – On iPhone only single photos shown

I recently plugged in my iPhone, only to see that when the contents of the device were shown in iPhoto, there were triples, or "triplicates" of every photo (this put the total around 10,000 photos). Meanwhile, on my iPhone's Photos app, everything looks normal with only single photos being shown.
I toiled over how to remedy the problem, and found I had no other choice but to spend the MANY hours syncing thousand upon thousands of duplicate photos/videos to my iPhoto library. I then broke down and purchased Duplicate Annihilator to clean up my now ruined library. Because iPhoto made all those duplicates, the file size compounded into many gigabytes. Duplicate Annihiliator had to run for hours before finally cleaning things up. It did it's job well, however the root of the problem still remains.
At the conclusion of transferring my entire library of photos from iPhone to iPhoto, I had the photos removed from the iPhone so I could start with a clean slate. I took a few sample photos and plugged the iPhone back in to iPhoto. Yet again, the dreaded triple duplicates, or "triplicates" of each photo I took show in the device preview window (i.e. I took 5, non-HDR photos, and 15 are shown—each repeated three times). If I proceed to import the collection, it imports triple of everything into my library.
Essentially, my situation now is: I have to import multiple copies of everything (takes longer), then I have to run Duplicate Annihilator each time to keep my iPhoto library from being a mess. Just wastes tons of time. How can I keep iPhoto from showing and importing all these multiple copies every time? Again, on the iPhone end, everything looks normal—only a single copy of each photo.
    What I have tried:
    Closing/restarting iPhoto
Checking for iPhoto updates (there are none, I'm on the latest version—which, as of this writing, is 9.2.3 629.52)
    Deleting com.apple.iPhoto.plist from ~/library/Preferences/
Using Image Capture (triple duplicates still show in IC as well)
    Disabling Photo Stream
Removing all photos and albums from iPhone

I am seeing this problem still, even after trying the Photo stream toggle trick that was mentioned. I have one otehr observation to add.
If I "Command"+select the first of each photo in iPhoto and then import those (choosing to Delete after import), then the next refresh of iPhone pictures oniPhoto will show all the photos (including the duplicates) gone. So basically something like this.
    1) iPhoto - I see triplicates of pictures on my iPhone.
    2) Command+Select the first instance of each duplicated picture.
    3) Import the selected pictures. Choose to Delete the pictures after import.
    4) Go back to iPhone in iPhoto. No more duplicates of the pictures I imported.
So this doesn't fix the problem as all the unimported photos still show triplicates, but al least I don't have to run a de-duper on my laptop now to eliminate triplicates.
This eliminates some of the hassle, but it's still a hassle.
I hope someone figures this out completely because it's making me hate iPhoto just a little bit.

  • Scanned in - Iphoto doesn't read...

I'm new to Iphoto and wanted to make a book for my mother in law's birthday.
So I scanned in a bunch of photos to Iphoto library - they appear and are RGB .jpgs - but they don't show up. Then I tried to import and it said unreadable format so I saved one as a TIF and still not read.
Want to make a photo book but having major frustrations...also, how long does it take for Apple to turn it around once I DO get that far -
    Many thanks-
    Andy

    Andy,
So I scanned in a bunch of photos to Iphoto library...
That's your problem. iPhoto doesn't know they are there, but it won't import them because they are already in the iPhoto Library folder. The solution is to scan to a location outside of the iPhoto Library folder - a Desktop folder is the most convenient. Then import from that folder, and delete it once the photos are in your library.
    Regards.
