IPhoto duplicates ALL portrait photos?

I just realized that all the photos taken in Portrait mode, are duplicated in the iPhoto.
This happens regardless of which camera the photos were taken by (all have "auto rotate" feature).
I found this out when I "Ctrl+Click" on any Portrait photos, it shows the "Revert to Original" option at the bottom on the contextual menu, even though these photos were never modified before.
Also when clicking on "Show File" or "Show Original File" from the contextual menu shows, it reveals the files from the "Modified" and "Original" folder respectively as well.
Is this normal? Anybody else experiencing this problem?
Thanks.

Psymon
I can only guess iPhoto does this for speed reason?!
No, I think it does it because it preserves your original file no matter what you do. This version control is a hardwired feature in iPhoto. It cannot be turned off and it's based on the best practise of digital asset management. Bluntly, if you don't want this feature, don't use iPhoto.
And no, there is no safe way to remove the Originals from a library. There are various hacks that claim to do this but I would not recommend any of them. We see too many reports on here from people who have had problems after using them.

  • TS3989 Photos are ok in aperture and iphoto but in photostream on ipad and iphone the top of all portrait photos is chopped off. I tried switching photostream off and on but got the same. Only happened with photos added today, all past photos are fine

I have never had any problems before but all portrait photos added today have the top chopped off. For example , people's heads are missing or roofs or buildings are chopped off. Photos are fine on the camera and on my mac in iphoto and aperture. Switched off photostream on my ipad...all photos were deleted. Switched photostream back on and all photos uploaded again and portrait photos are cropped again

It sounds like while trying to import the photos with insufficient disk space those image files were damaged and not copied fully.  Now that you have sufficient space (a minimum of 10 GB is recommended) the latest imports are good.
What do you get if you export one of the problem photos out of iPhoto as Kind=Original and try to open it with Preview.  If it appears the same then there's nothing you can to do recover them.

  • IPhoto 6 Import portrait photos duplicated

    Hi,
I import my photos in a folder before importing in iPhoto 6 (with drag&drop).
But i've noticed that all portrait photos (not landscape format) are duplicated: one in "Originals" folder, and another one in "Modified" folder.
The landscape photos are correctly put in the Originals folder.
My hard disk will be full sooner !!
I'm using a Canon Ixus 750, but it was the same issue with Nikon Coolpix 775...
Does it happen because i import my photos in two-times?
ps : sorry for my english, i'm french

I found this on the web :
"iPhoto is saving a copy of the rotated image into the Modified folder. Although it may look the same as the Original from the Finder, it's actually different.
The "Original" has all the bits in a landscape orientation with a TIFF Orientation flag set, which causes programs that understand that flag (like Finder) to show them rotated.
    ---->
The "Modified" one has all the bits in a portrait (rotated) orientation with the TIFF Orientation flag not set.
Yes, it's a subtle difference, and for most programs it won't matter. A few programs don't understand the TIFF flag, so would need the "Modified" copy to show it correctly.
In any case, for better or worse, iPhoto has always done this. It used to be a background operation whenever you rotated in iPhoto. With iPhoto 6, this happens during import instead of later in the background.
    ---->
But i didn't understand why i have duplicated pictures when i import from my Canon, but not when i import from a CD or a dezipped folder...????????

  • IPhoto duplicates all of my photos and doesn't recognize new folders.

I am using a Macbook pro, Mountain lion, and Iphoto.  What a nightmare!  Iphoto duplicates every photo or folder I import.  If I create a new folder it cannot find the folder or the photos within.  I have tried updating IPhoto but it appears my IPhoto is up to date.
Is there a fix for this?
If not what is the easiest way to export my photos and uninstall Iphoto?

Unfortunately I have the same problem as DFMitchell.
Whenever I import photos from either my Nikon camera or my iPhone, either the device (which doesn't seem likely given they are two completely separate devices made by two different companies) or iPhoto itself creates a small thumbnail duplicate of the image. The name differs slightly to :*number*.jpg instead of *number*.JPG. as such, when I navigate through Finder to All Images and look at my images in the source folder, I can see a duplicate of every image. When I navigate to the same photo through iPhoto itself, I cannot see that duplicate.
I originally thought this was a problem and so began to manually and painfully delete all these duplicates from the Finder window. However now in iPhoto, the thumbnail image that you can usually see as the 'front' photo on each event folder (ie before you even go into the event) has disappeared. additionally, normally you can move your mouse over an event folder (again before you enter it) and the different images in that event flicker across. Now it's just blank. However when I enter the event i can still see all the photos so I know they're still there.
Question is : why does iPhoto create the duplicate?
Second Question : If my guess is right and the small duplicate is meant to be a thumbnail image which can be seen in the events window, how do I get them back now that i've deleted them? (they're gone out of the trash too)
Note to self - Apple always has a reason for what they do. don't question and don't mess with it especially when you don't understand!!!

  • Lost iPhoto and all my photos

    Before the arrival of my new iMac due to damaging my old one, I decided to delete some photos and tidy them up a bit so that the migration would be faster. In my launchpad suddenly two iPhoto icons appear and one said iPhoto (copy). Unfortunately I deleted this without checking it and emptied the trash can which then said 'deleting 3500 photos'. I had deleted a lot of photos so did not realise that I was deleting all my photos and let it continue. When I fired up the mac the next morning the iPhoto would not open and made me set up a new library which of course had nothing in it! Before you ask;
    1) I had not backed them up (I know feel free to shout at me!!). You will be pleased to know I have now bought an external HD BIG lesson learnt.
    2) I have tried to rebuild iPhoto following advice on the forums, this just rebuilt the new one.
    3) I have tried to find the old iPhoto file by following advice on apple support and you tube.
    4) I have recovered some photos from photo stream and luckily I had lots on Facebook that I have been able to pull through. I still have about 2000 missing
Everyone I speak to says don't worry it should be on your hard drive! But I am worried because I can't see anything anywhere that relates to my old file. Any help or advice would be GRATEFULLY received.

    CSOUND is correct.
Get a copy of Data Rescue 4 by PROSOFT.
I have used older versions in the past with some success.
However, if this is a hardware failure of the hard drive, no data recovery software would be able to recover much data.
I lost the magnetic heads to a laptop drive many years ago and nothing worked.
Of course the computer would not boot either.
Be sure to read the directions before loading any software including Data Rescue.
You want to avoid using that machine so data that you want is not overwritten.
    Good luck.
After doing this, be sure to get a pair of external hard drives.
    Use one for time machine.
Use the other for a SuperDuper bootable back up.
Finally, sign up for an internet back up service such as Crash Plan.
With three backup schemes, your data should be preserved for many years.
If one mechanically fails the other backup should work.
If your computer systems and hard drives are destroyed by a fire or stolen, the internet backup will save you.

  • HI, I have a Canon Pixma MG5250 printer and it doesn't seem to recognize iPhoto. All my photos are in iPhoto but I can't access them when the printer's 'photo print' box comes up.  Any suggestions? thanks

    Hi,
    I have a Mac OS X version 10.5.8
I now have a Canon Pixma Printer MG 5250 and it doesn't seem to recognize iPhoto, where all my folders of photos are in the computer.
All other aspects of the printer such as scanning and printing documents are working.  When I open the printer's
'photo print' box on my Mac, it cannot access iPhoto.
I would really appreciate any feedback and suggestions as to what to do.
    thanks.

If you want to print a photo that's in your library you should do so from iPhoto.  Select the photo, crop to the size you want to print and type Command+P to start the print process.  In the Print window select the paper size and print size, printer and then click on the Print button.

  • I upgraded my mac software to mountain lion and lost my iPhoto and all my photos in it!

I stupidly updated my software om my macboook pro to be able to set up icloud.
Now it says I can no longer access Iphoto (so ALL of my photos are suddenly gone!!??!!)
I read that people are just down;loading iphoto again and can access all their old stuff so
I've downloaded iPhoto from the appstore and now have a pop up saying:
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade."
I'm scared to hit 'upgrade' and not be able to access my old photos...
    HELP please????

Yes when you go to a new version of iPhoto you must upgrade your library and older versions will no longer be able to access the library
The only way to avoid losing your photos sooner or later is a good, constant backup like Time Machine

  • Iphoto 08 all the photos gone (even in Original and Data file)!

    Hi,
I was uploading pictures to my new Iphoto 08 and suddenly all my thumbnails for the albums were gone. So I tried to rebuild the library and then found that even in Iphoto Library (that I opened with Show Package) there isn't a single photo in data nor originals--only the folders for my events. This is very frustrating since these are all my photos from past four years. And I haven't activated Time-Machine Yet. Please let me know what I can do from here.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where were you importing the photos from? Are there any files in those event folders? Do a search in your home folder for "Library6.iPhoto" and see what you find. If there's more than one then you have another library somewhere.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto deleted all the photos from my photo library while I was in iPhoto. Is there a way to recover them?

I am using OS Yosemite 10.10.2. I was working in iPhoto 9.6.1 with iPhone 5 attached and moving items from iCloud to iPhoto. iPhoto suddenly deleted all the photos in my photo library and displayed a screen as if I were using iPhoto for the first time. Regardless of what caused this, is there a way to recover the lost photos? Thanks!

You might have accidentally used the Command+Option+Delete key combination described below to move them the to iPhoto Trash bin:
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library
1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

  • Does reinstalling iPhoto delete all old photos from memory?

My iPhoto became corrupted so I had to reinstall the program. It seems that by deleting the old version of the software (by removing the pkg files from receipts) and reinstalling the software all my photos have vanished from my hard drive. Surely the program wouldnt remove the files from memory or is this a feature of apple products?
can anyone help!? advise please...! I am an apple novice.

Typically the iPhoto application does not become corrupted - the database (the iPhoto library) does and resolving this usually does not involve installing iPhoto but rebuilding the iPhoto library
what exactly do you mean when you say
all my photos have vanished from my hard drive.
    What version of iPhoto

  • Iphoto lost all my photos and won't save new ones

I know this has been asked before, but I am computer illiterate and a first time Mac user (just got my macbook in July). I had approx. 1000 photos saved in iphoto and now when I open the application they are gone! Plus, I just loaded more pics directly from my camera, named and organized them last week (about 25 pics) and now they are gone too! What gives? Am I supposed to be saving these somehow in iphoto? The weird thing is the pics are still in my applications under pictures. (most of them anyway). Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
Also, for future reference, whenever I put a cd in and import photos the photos are fine as long as the cd is in, but if the cd is not in the computer iphoto says that it cannot read, also when I try to download photos from friends website it won't show the photo, only a white page with the .jpg logo...this is really frustrating-i never had these problems with my pc, and the reason I got a mac was because of the great pic. capabilities.

I wonder if your database file has been corrupted.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto duplicates all my pictures?!!!

    Hi,
i found out that after i add a pict to the library and than modify it (via iPhoto), if i spotlight the file name of that picture it finds 3 copies in 3 different folders of the library: one in "originals", one in "data" and one in "modified".
is that normal? shoudn't it just keep the modified one? isn't this taking me a lot of extra and unnecessary space on th HD?

    Laptop:
Yes, it think those are leftover folders from the V5 version. I've seen it on one of my libraries. If you really want to get rid of them make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder, remove them from the current one and launch iPhoto. If all goes well then you can delete the backup copy. Better safe than sorry.
    Do you Twango?

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me on that.
I run iPhoto 6 and use an external drive.
I unplugged my firewire while iPhoto was on and since then I have a square with an exclamation mark but can't find any of my numerous pictures.
I tried to locate the photos on my external drive but can't.
What should I do recover my pictures?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Terrence,
    Thanks for your answer.
I do have an Ext Disk iPHOTO library folder but cant find the pictures I am looking for, it is not in the my pictures folder either.
Yet, when I am on iPHOTO and click on one of these squares with an exclamation mark I can see the size of the pictures so it must be somewhere, I tried to export them but it doesn't work.
Anything I can do to retrieve my pics?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
They are most likely inside the iPhoto Package File in your Pictures Folder - Right click on it and choose 'Show Package Contents'. Your pics will be in the Originals folder.
Given that you created a new library, did you try switching back to the old one?
