IPhoto duplication: Resolution

Just want to share this beacuse I had been struggling with trying to resolve the issue of duplication of images in my photo library. It started when I upgraded my computer and tried to import an old photo library. Anyway, this seems to work:
1) Created two folders: PhotoExport 1 and 2 on the desktop
2) Took an old photo library and exported it using "original image" and subfolder of "event name" to PhotoExport 1
3) Once exported, deleted any bogus event names.(The duplicated images would come across in numerical event names
4) Quit iPhoto and then opened a different photolibrary (using the opt key) and did steps 2 and 3 only I exported that library to PhotoExport2
5) Selected all files in PhotoExport2 and tried to move them into PhotoExport 1 -- So, if there were any duplicaton of "events" they didn't copy into the folder.
I did this with a couple of older libraries, and then I created a brand new library in the Pictures folder and imported the entire content of PhotoExport1. And, Ta-Da! I have a non-duplicated photo library....this will only work if you have been pretty good about naming your events.

Best advice: don't have the problem in the first place:
It started when I upgraded my computer and tried to import an old photo library.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new Machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else. And no duplicates.
Also, be very aware with the scheme you have evolved there: File size. There can be three files in an iPhoto Library with the same name: the Original, the thumbnail and the Preview. Did you chck the file size before deleting anything?

  • IPhoto book - resolution questions

What resolution should I use to scan in my printed 4x6 photos to get the best result from iPhoto book? Is 300 ppi sufficient, or should I use 400 or higher? Don't want to scan higher than needed since the files are quite large. Don't know what the resolution is of the printer used by Apple.
Also, is it still the case that I should make sure photos are first cropped to 4x3 for best results? I have the latest version of iLife 5.
    Thanks for advice!
    Tara

Jeff - thanks so much for your reply - very helpful. I'm scanning them all in at 600 dpi to give me options of printing some large.
Another question - does anyone have experience with making photo albums from other programs/services? Are they all about the same in terms of quality? From the few I've checked out, they all look pretty much the same (as advertised) so I'm guessing they are using similar printers/processes and that quality would be about the same. In which case, I can go ahead and be confident that even though I will use iPhoto book because I am a die-hard Mac user and iPhoto is so easy to use, I'm not losing out on a better quality book that might be available through another software/service.
Thanks again for advice - can't wait to make my first iPhoto album of pre-digital camera baby pics for my now 6-year old. I made one for my boss last year that came out great but all the pics came from digital cameras.

  • IPhoto Picture Resolution Sizes.

I am wondering if someone can help?
Is it posible for a picture resolution to reduce when stored in iPhoto, either by diliberate means or otherwise?
When reviewing my photos I feel they have smaller resolutions than when downloaded from the camera.
    Could this be possible?
    Many Thanks.

    colin:
Thumbnails will be 360 x 270 pixels in size and you can check that right in iPhoto's Info pane at the bottom of the Source window.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Recovered IPhoto's resolution issues

    Hi everyone.
After purchasing Data rescue II and attempting to recover lost photos from my IPhoto, it appears that the resolution of quite a few of them is poor, to say the least. Any idea why this is the case? Some of the photos are perfect, but more are less than - to the point of being quite blurry. I don't want to have to have spent $100 for a program that got me nowhere...Is there a fox? Quick or otherwise?
    Thanks,
    dave

    ocwaveoc:
Yes, iPhoto doesn't render the thumbnail files very well. It tends to over-soften them due to the antialiasing it performs. I can't speak to the RAW side of things. Have you looked into iView MediaPro. It handles RAW and is an excellent image management tool.

  • Importing stills from iPhoto - terrible resolution?

I'm a complete novice.  I have tried searching on this and have not found any suitable information for this problem.  I have become tired of the instability of iMovie, and just downloaded the trial version  of FCP X.  I've starting tinkering with it and have noticed that when I bring stills in from iPhoto to the FCP timeline, the resolution is drastically lower than what I see in iMovie.  Low enough that I really cannot use the pics because they look awful.
Here is what I am doing (and not doing, as the case may be):
Open FCP, click on the camera button in the center-right toolbar (similar toolbar in iMovie), find the still I want from an event in iPhoto, and drag it into the FCP timeline.  FCP opens a window stating it does not recognise the video format and gives me a choice of sizes to use.  It seems that no matter what I choose, the resolution is bad.  Now, when I do the same exact thing in iMovie, it does not give me a window about video format and the resolution is not bad (adequate, anyway, for what I am doing) - far better than what I see in FCP.
So, what am I doing wrong?  I know FCP is supposed to be the premier NLE software (certainly a cut above iMovie), and so I am convinced that the problem is simply that I don't know what I'm doing.
    Thanks for your help.

OK, so I must confess to being an idiot.  On second shot, it appears FCP not only imports the stills as well as iMovie, but the quality is significantly better, not worse.
Here's what happened - I imported an entire project into FCP from iMovie, which turned out somewhat disasterous.  The quality of the stills and vid is not good, and the Ken Burns and transitions did not import well.  Then I began piecing the project back together from scratch in FCP, and became confused which project was the import and which was from scratch, and I thought I was positive I had it right.  In any case, importing projects from iMovie does not seem to go well.  Is this typical or is it more likely that I messed that up to?
Just for completeness - the new project (from scratch) is set up as follows: 1080p, 1920x1080, 23.98p (this is the format of the video the timeline will see).  The stills are mostly 3089x2048 jpeg files (digitized film photos).
So, the question has become two fold in my learnings here:
1 - any tips or tricks on importing an iMovie project into FCP for the best results?
2 - any general rules of thumb to follow when bringing stills into the FCP timeline for best resolution?  This is working fine, as stated above, but the higher the quality the better my completed project will go over.
    Thanks much!

  • Iphoto reducing resolution from a Canon Rebel T1I

We have a Canon Rebel T1I.  Iphoto after importing from the camera is not saving the full pixel resolution.  It saves it on the computer to a lower pixel/resolution.  I might as well be taking the pics on my phone.  Can this setting be changed?  Can I revert the ones already imported to the higher resolution?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you seeing the reduced resolution?
iPhoto is always importing from the camera at the full resolution. Either you have set the camera to a low resolution or you are looking at the previews or thumbnails of your photos.
You will see the full resolution original that iPhoto is storing, if you select the photo in iPhoto and use the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original File".
But if you simply drag photos from iPhoto's window you will only export preview images in reduced quality.

  • IPhoto picture resolution issue

    Hi,
I've sync'd several iPhoto libraries (I have multiples) but am seeing many of the photos display in what looks like blown up thumbnails rather than full resolution photos. These are full 10mp images at 3600x2700 in iPhoto. The problem is that it's inconsistent. Some photos look great and some don't.
What could account for the difference?
    Thanks,

    G4 Dual 867   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

There are several issues at work here. Which all seem to stem from this being an ipod with better video than a settop mac.
First the apple TV displays a max resolution of 720p (not 1080) for videos and photos alike.
Second when the photos are synced their resolution is reduced to have a max of 720 pixels vertical resolution - I'm not sure but there is an apple photo database in the pictures folder that looks like it contain these versions of the pictures.
The photos are then displayed by the apple TV and if you set it to 1080 it blows up the smaller images to fit the screen. From what I've seen any portrait pictures look OK (because they aren't blown up) but landscape photos look like crap. this may not be as noticeable if you use ken burns effect because it doesn't appear to blow up the picture when it uses this.
We purchased this primarily to show our photos in hi res on our 1080p tv, its a big disappointment and will be going back. Get a mac mini instead!

  • IPhoto switches resolution for slideshow

I'm using a Viewsonic widescreen monitor with my Mini G4 which works just fine at a resolution of 1600x1050. When I start a slideshow from iPhoto, however, the display switches to 1280x960, and the photos appear stretched horizontally.
I've read elsewhere about issues with certain monitors and the 'coherent' display problem, but I can't see why this problem should only manifest itself during iPhoto slideshows!
Any insight into this would be much appreciated.
    Simon

Same problem here, but using a different external monitor. One post elsewhere recommended rebuilding the library, which I tried. Didn't help, but it took a long time. I'm using iphoto 6 on an ibook g4.
I'm about to switch to version 8 with a macbook. Can I hope the problem will be solved with that version?

  • IPhoto Duplication Nightmare - What???

    Hello:
I just got a new iMac and am stunned at how much chaos has gone on with this. (Upgrading from Tiger)....  Migration assistant does not work with Tiger (as it was promised) so I've now spent an entire week (with 3 nights not going to bed) having to try and manually re-create everything...over 100 mail boxes and tens of thousands of emails that imported lost all my safari & firefox stuff and now this.
Today I've spent 15 hours fooling with iPhoto.  What should be a simple drag and drop or "import Library" has created over 5,000 duplicated images.  And for some insane reason MLion doesn't let you see "Rolls" or any kind of list so I can easily see the duplicates, but I am forced to scroll thru thousands of images all out of sequence and un-sortable because they all have the same "date" (import) and they don't have titles - they have ROLL NUMBERS.....
For God sake!  If I try and look at the libary file, it only shows "library" unlike Tiger where I could actually drill into the files and see what the heck is going on!
Can someone please help me understand how on earth we are supposed to see and organize our photos if we have to turn them into magic "events"?  I have no idea why there are a zillion duplicates.  I had these all organized in Tiger in folders....
Is there any way to see these duplicates and delete them without having to go one at a time?  I want to see a list, not tons of big images.... I have carpal tunnel from this already... LOL!
    Thanks....
    Exhausted....

    Hi Terence:
Thanks for your response.   I finally found what I was looking for in the new Mac files, yet alas the naming convention was still numerical in nested folders named by the date (import date).  I ended up completing the job manually photo by photo as I was already halfway done when I first posted and didn't want to risk following Larry's directions (as they were basically the same as what I did to start with) and end up having to start all over again.
For the record though, in case anyone else like me is out there encounter a similar issue and was on an old version of Tiger, you are incorrect that we could never directly access the iPhoto library.  I am looking at it easy peasy in my old Mac as I type.
And there they all are listed nicely
Finder: Users: (name of User): Documents: iPhoto Library: Modified or Originals: 2000-2012 (one for each year of import):Roll #s (all your rolls): photo jpgs by number or name.
Your final sentence basically explained it all.  As it happens, I got my last Mac in July of 2007 and have always been able to see the hard drive & its files etc in Finder.
Coming into a brand new system where it was promised that magical one button migration assistant would do all of this and load my email, browser, photos, and everything else in my computer is only for people who have a computer that is less than 4-5 years old (LOL)... eons I realize to kids and computer geeks who routinely get new equipment, but not to the rest of us who don't.
I believe when you are able to use Migration Assistant, it will indeed likely keep all your naming conventions, etc.  When you can't, the computer sees it simply as a new import of data and creates new names & time stamps.
As for the "User Tip", if you mean Larry's directions, finding a "Library" to drag is not readily seen
The Finder window in the new computer only shows this (of which Library or Users are no where):
    All My Files
    Air Drop
    Applications
    Desktop
    Documents
    Downloads
    Movies
    Music
    Pictures
    Shared:
    Time Capsule
    Devices:
    Remote Disc
I had to figure out to:  View"Show Status Bar"
and then at the bottom double click that Users icon to access that to navigate inside folders.  Even then, the folder he's talking about is not in "Library" which would confuse a lot of people.  It's in Users.  And if you wish to see your files the only way to do that was to actually search for the name of a JPG to find where it was nested.  For me this was made tougher because my old computer was connected to the new one for the migration.... which could also lead to someone not realizing that the Library they're "finding" is not the one to be throwing away.
Anyway, Thanks for your kind response and the opportunity to memorialize this for any other soul experiencing what I am.
    Blessings...

  • Reducing Aperture: iPhoto duplication

When using unified library is there any way of NOT seeing every Aperture "project" (aka iPhoto event)  in a long column headed EVENTS 2 sections below iPhoto's Events folder in LIBRARY? At the moment my Aperture "projects" are identical to iPhoto's "events"
Presumably when I get into using Aperture more I will be grateful for this set up... will I?
    Thanks.

Even being able to have all A's projects behind one folder/label would be good then I wouldn't have to scroll down miles to my Albums...

  • IPHOTO slideshow resolution

Have created slideshow with music in iPHOTO. All worked and looked great, until exporting and making a DVD where all (photos and text) are blurry slightly out of focus. It is a large family album that I have spent years restoring, and it really ***** not to be able to supply to family.  HELP!

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Resolution changes in PSElements after editing in iPhoto?

If I edit a photo within iPhoto 6 and then later open that same photo in Elements3 - when I open the RESIZE - IMAGE SIZE menu, the resolution number displays as 72, instead of 300, as it was in the original photo. The file size stays the same, the pixel numbers stay the same- it's ONLY the resolution number which changes, even though I haven't made any change to the resolution.
If I open a photo into Elements which has >never< been edited in iPhoto, the resolution numbers don't change - stays at 300. In addition, if I originally edit this photo in Elements, then save it into iPhoto, the numbers don't change either. The resolution number only changes if the image is edited in iPhoto first.
Looking back, it appears to have happened in iphoto 5 as well.
    Is this a bug?<br>

    Blubird:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Kevin is right. It's all relative as to how the info is presented. If you look at each photo in PSE's Image->Resize->Image Size menu window you'll find the pixel dimensions haven't changed as you mentioned but the size in inches has. The 72 dpi file will have a much large size in inches than the original folder. 10 inches at 180 dpi will translate to 25 inches at 72 dpi (10 x 180 = 25 x 72).

  • What is the best way to save and copy high resolution slide show?

Creating and saving/burning slide shows in iMovie or iDVD does not appear to give the same high resolution as playing slide shows directly from iPhoto.  Resolution is also lost when exporting the slide show to iTunes.  Is there a recommended technique to preserve resolution when saving a slide show?

Click the "Export" icon on the bottom of the application window.
Click the "Custom Export..." button on the bottom left hand side of the new menu that appears at the top of the application window.
At the bottom of the next window click the "Options..." button.
Under the "Video" setting, click the "Size..." button.
Next to "Dimensions:" click the "Compressor native" drop down menu.
In there you have "1920 x 1080 HD".
There are a bunch of other options, so explore and find what works best for you.
