IPhoto effects/edits

I asked this question at a One to One session and no one could help me. When I make an edit to a photo in iPhoto and then drag it to my desktop, the edit disappears and only the original photo is saved to the desktop. I'm using iPhoto 09. I'm a graphic designer and want to be able to use my photos (with the cool edits I make in iPhoto) in some of my artwork in other programs. Is there a way to solve this issue?

that should not happen
Exactly how are you doing this? Editing the photo, clicking done and dragging from the event to the desktop?
Do the edits show in the event?
Try selecting the photo in the event and exporting it to the desktop (file menu ==> export)

  • Looking for iPhoto effect like presets for Aperture.Color Boost/Edge Blur

    Hi all,
I am a hobbyist photographer who made the jump from iPhoto to Aperture a little over a year ago. For the most part Aperture is a way more capable editing package than iPhoto. That said, ever now and then, I miss some of the basic effects that were available in iPhoto. In particular, the "Color Boost" and "edge Blur" effects - has anyone seen Aperture presets that mimic these iPhoto effects?
    Thanks very much!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I get the same effect. I don't know if its normal or not. When viewed or printed at anything but very, very large the pixilation is not readily apparent.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Here's something you can try with a copy of your current library.
1 - go to iPhoto's Events preference pane and set the auto split option to 1 day per even.
2 - go the the Events mode, select all Events.
3 - go to the Events menu  and and select Autosplit Selected Events.
which will give you an event for each day.
4 - again select all events (although it might be better do to fewer at a time) and export them to your desired destination via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  menu option with the following settings:
The workflow above will produce a folder for each days photos with the date as the folder's title.

  • How to organize photos in iPhoto after editing in Photoshop Elements?

Hello. This is my first post with this group. I have iPhoto set up to automatically go to Photoshop Elements (PE) for editing. That works just fine, but I have never learned an easy way to get edited images back into the original iPhoto folder (Event).
I've been flattening the layers in PE and saving as a JPEG or TIF to my desktop. Then I drag to iPhoto. I often make multiple versions of the same image and wish there was an easier way to get these versions into iPhoto, preferably into the same Event the original photo came from.
Is this possible? I also wish I didn't have to flatten because I want to be able to edit in layers again if necessary. I have about given up and have been storing non-flattened images elsewhere on the computer.
    Thanks,

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. This may help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • How do I upload pictures from iphone 5c and iPhoto for editing in photoshop elements 12 please?

I used to be able to edit all my iphoto pictures in PSE10. I  set the advanced section of preferences in iphoto to edit in PSE.  Since installing Photoshop Elements 12, I cannot get the transfer into PSE  of the photos (unedited and unreduced)  to work.
The general preferences only give a camera the options of connecting to iphoto, aperture, image capture, or, no application. Assuming my phone is a camera for editing purposes, I would like to give it the option of connecting to PSE 12.
Also, I would like to import my photos from the iphone 5C into PSE12 for editing. There is an import action in PSE12 which does not seem to work with the imac and iphone.
In addition, my email application is greyed out in the general preferences;  I use Microsoft Outlook for Mac.
How can I change the settings  in 'general' and 'advanced' preferences to work for me, Please?
    Thanks

  • Using iphoto and editing multiple photos in photoshop

I set iphoto to edit my photos in photoshop. I tried to edit a group of photos at once, and it'll only open the first 4 pictures. Is there a reason I can't open more than the first 4 photos that I have selected? Is there a setting in photoshop I need to change that is preventing me from opening more photos?
    Thanks!

As Larry said that's a "limitation" of iPhoto. Report that to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. I think you can go back to iPhoto and select another 4 photos and open them in PS with the original 4 still open.
    For what it's worth:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.

  • IPhoto issues editing Raw files in PE4

I've just acquired Photoshop Elements 4 and was happy at the prospect or keeping my photos in iPhoto and editing them in Elements.
I mostly shoot in RAW format but when editing a RAW file in Elements I can't get the edit to show up in iPhoto (version 6).
On the other hand when processing jpegs from iPhoto to Elements the edits show up fine back in iPhoto.
Is the problem with the format change when converting RAW to Jpeg I wonder?
I did notice that when saving the edited RAW file -and choosing Jpeg as the new format- iPhoto defaulted to the "Original" not the "Modified" folder for the save. Couldn't iPhoto determine that the file has been modified? Is that because the extension was changed?
I also tried saving and manually selecting the MODIFIED folder but with unhappy results. The edit did show up, and in it's proper place, but when viewing in "full screen" mode the image resorted back to the unedited version after 3 or 4 seconds. I tried that a couple of times with the same results...!? I hope I didn't corrupt anything in the process!
I realise I could just do a "save as" to my desktop and import back to iPhoto but that creates a double and also a new roll for each import...
I haven't seen any posts about this. Has anyone had the same problem, or am I missing something elementary?
    Thanks for any feedback.

iPhoto is a consumer-level application, and RAW is a format mostly for professionals. When you import a RAW file into iPhoto it saves the RAW in the Originals folder and instantly creates a jpeg version of it in the Modified folder. This causes the problem with your editing workflow.
Yes, changing the file extension in Elements is the same as doing a Save As - it breaks the link iPhoto has with the original. This is why you don't see your edits back in iPhoto. Any time you change the extension you will need to save as to the desktop and import the edit as a new original into iPhoto. As you've seen, you cannot save directly into the iPhoto library folder because images must be Imported for iPhoto to recognize them. If you know which files you placed in there, go ahead and drag them out (using Finder) to your desktop. Then import. (Be careful not to tamper with anything else in the library folder while you're in there.)
My suggestion for your RAW workflow is to use Image Capture (in your Applications folder) to upload from your camera (to a folder anywhere outside of your iPhoto library folder). Edit in Elements. Last, import into iPhoto. Once inside iPhoto, the desktop copies can be deleted. You can set Image Capture to open when you connect a camera in Image Capture Preferences.
iPhoto does create a new roll each time you import photos, but you can always reorganize your rolls. Choose Library and View > Sort Photos > by Film Rolls and you can combine, create, retitle, and redate your rolls. For example, you could keep separate rolls for files with a RAW original versus files imported as jpegs.

  • Does iPhoto automatically edit my images straight from sd card BEFORE I import to iPhoto and edit myself?

HI, Hope you can help with my query.  Does iPhoto automatically edit my images straight from my sd card BEFORE I import to iPhoto and edit myself?

My Photography teacher told me yesterday morning that my 'images levels ‘ are being changed by my iPhoto.
Just a couple of long shots, but there is an ever-so-slight possibility that what s/he's seeing is the result of changing the colour profile of the images? Adobe RGB to sRGB for instance? That would - or could - make the images seem a little different.
And, of course, if the images are Raws then there could also be a significant difference between the preview rendered in camera and the one rendered by iPhoto.
But in neither case would this mean the image has been edited in any way.
    Regards to Kildare.

  • Special effects editing question for iMovie '09

    Hi,
I understand that iMovie '09 doesn't support many (any?) add-on software packages for special effects editing.
Meanwhile, I'm editing some sports clips in iMovie '09,, in which I'd love to have a "spotlight" on a player, (where the other action/background is dimmed), or use an arrow to point at a player---that sort of thing.
Is there a way to---say, do this edit in iMovie HD, or iMovie '06, with special software, then re-import it back into my iMovie '09 project?

    Ziatron,
Thanks for your reply. When you say you use iMovie '06 with iDVD 09 all the time---can you explain further? I guess I go back to my original question---Would iMovie '09 "accept" the edit done in iMovie HD or iMovie '06?
I do like the organizing layout (boxes with titles) much better on the previous versions, as well as some more detailed audio editing---but I'm grudgingly moved on to iMovie 09, and have already loaded a lot of my material (and keyworded them) into iMovie 09. I think I'm going to stick it out with this project.
Thanks in advance for any further advice you can share.

  • How can i save my importing photos in iPhoto but edit in photoshop elements 11?

how can i save my importing photos in iPhoto but edit in photoshop elements 11?

    You have two options:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor for iphoto and send the photos from iphoto. Save (not Save As) without changing the name or format and iPhoto will remember the original + the last edited version. (To get back to the original you will have to lose the edits, though.)
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, work on the copies, make all the changes you want to name and format and then reimport the edited versions to iphoto as new files. This lets you save as many different versions as you like.

  • I am storing photos in Mac's iPhoto but editing them in PSE12. When I save my edits, everything disappears and I have no idea where they've been saved. I've looked at all the possibilities, but no luck so far. Any ideas?? Thx.

I'm storing photos in iPhoto but editing them in PSE12. However when I save my edited photo I can never find where it's been put. My settings are set to put the photo back with the original, however it doesn't seem to be there, or anywhere else. Any ideas??

You should not have to choose a location. The saved copy should automatically appear in the iPhoto Library. You must save (Cmd+S) after editing in the Elements Editor Application. Do not use “Save As”
Under the iPhoto prefs – Advanced tab, if you have set up Elements as your external editor its best to set the default back to iPhoto so the first dropdown shows as:
    Edit Photos : In iPhoto
You should then be able to edit normally e.g.
Double-click to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in elements.
Also launch the Elements Editor and go to Preferences >> Saving Files
Set the dialog drop-down “On First Save” to show “Over Current File” and click OK.

I am able to click on a pic in iphoto to edit it and opens automatically in photoshop CS6. However when I am done editing and save I can not save back into Iphoto.  Can any one help wiht this?

Thanks Terence. What a relief. I still don't understand what the book I read was talking about then. Here's a quote from the section I was referring to in "iPhoto 08: The Missing Manual" book, p 91 (ISBN: 0596-516185):
"Note, however, that the instant you edit a TIFF-format photo (Chapter 7), iPhoto converts it into JPEG.
That's fine if you plan to order prints or a photo book (Chapter 11) from iPhoto, since JPEG files are required for those purposes. But if you took that once-in-a-lifetime, priceless shot as a TIFF file, don't do any editing in iPhoto-don't even rotate it- if you hope to maintain its perfect, pristine quality."
After my test results, I thought maybe this was something that had changed from iPhoto 08 to iPhoto 09, so I went to the bookstore yesterday and checked the same book for iPhoto 09, and there it was, the same quote! (on a different page, of course).
Anyway, thanks once again for your confirmation that my test was indeed correct. Linda

  • How to move raw to iPhoto with edits?

    hello,
I'm interested in moving edited raw photos into iPhoto with edits intact to take advantage of the new iLife 08 web galleries. Is there a way to do this? Would it involve XML info or something? Thanks.

If you want to create web galleries with low resolution jpegs ie. the previews that Aperture creates then all you need to do is tell aperture to update the previews for the images you want then go to 'show aperture library' in iphoto and drag either the albums or the individual files into iphoto. By telling aperture to update the preview before you import into iphoto you make sure they include all your edits. If you want higher res images in your web gallery I think you have to export 'versions' at the res you want and then import into iphoto.
    Hope this helps!

  • When i double click a photo in iphoto to edit, the screen goes black

when i double click a photo in iphoto to edit, the screen goes black.  I'm using 10.7.5 with iPhoto 9.4.2.  Can anyone help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
