Iphoto event date wrong

How do i correct the date which is automatically assigned to my iphoto events? Every event in iphoto says January even though when looking at the description info for each photo, the "date taken" field is accurate. Iphoto seems to be keeping the day accurate, but defaults the month to January when importing. Any ideas?

For future reference there's an application, PhotoInfo, that can batch change the EXIF date in photos, either by adding or subtracting a given time differential or by changing the entire date and time entirely. It would be best used on a batch of photos outside of iPhoto before importing. It's great for changing the time when you travel and take photos in a different time zone but didn't resset the camera's clock.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

IPhoto Events 'date range' have ALL changed by 16 yrs+

I'm very new to iMac (from Windows) and when I was editing some Events in iPhoto somehow I've managed to change all the Events to a random date range of 'now to 16yrs +' ... Is there a way that I can revert to the a previous version for dates of Events or will I have to copy a back-up version from Time Machine into iPhotos? I have 6000+ photos and any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for reply .. yes, I'm talking about the Event date (I think it is in grey underneath the key photo in Event view). I think when I was updating the date range of a couple of Events (that were showing a date range back to 1993 at the time) I inadvertantly applied a new date range to ALL of my Events (not sure how I did that).
I've read a few posts about 'bugs' but I think if have the most recent update!
Some of the more recent Events I can manually amend but for those photos that are quite a few years old, it now displays a date range - in some cases up to 2028 - and I would like to be able to see the 'original' date that the photo was taken.
I am on iPhoto 11 (9.1.5) and using Lion OS.
I have checked System Preferences> Date & Time and I don't appear to have a 'custom' date/time preference.

Event date wrong

Hi,
I'm using the latest imovie version with the new "event sort by date" (and the ability to delete a clip, not just reject it, yay!). Some of the events are sorted into the wrong time (even two years out). I've tried changing the clip dates, but they all seem to be correct anyway. Any ideas how to change the date of an event?

I had a few different problems I needed to solve. First I was not viewing "All Clips" in the iMovie browser window. You need to makes sure you have the setting correct in your iMovie broswer.
Then I could see the rejected clips, and in my case there were some in the event from 2009 that were not being used in my project, and that cause the event to get dated 2009. In other words, an event is going to get dated based on the newest clip in the event. I deleted those clips, and then the project moved into the 2006 year folder (grouping).
Second I had some missing clips. Those were harder to fix. I had to go to the finder and open the iMovie library package and dig into the files there and find the missing files. I dragged them to my desktop, and then dragged them back into the clips section of the iMove browser. If you try this, make sure you have a good backup of everything in case something goes haywire. I hope this helps. It can be confusing. I final got everything fixed and working right. Now I'm having fun making movies!

IPhoto 8 Dates wrong after upgrade to Tiger

My iPhoto library got totally screwed up when I upgraded toTiger. When I upload images some go in as a year earlier, sometimes they go in just fine. I never know. I can't find any of my pictures because they are 'somewhere' in my library. If I look at the photo info part of the iPhoto window the date down there is a different date from what the actual date is. If I right click on a photo and go to 'show file' and the original files coms up, it has the correct date.
Any advice?

So, I've recently added all my photos into iPhoto - great.
But, the problem is...all my old photos were taken on a camera that didn't set a 'Date picture taken' attribute but does have a 'Date modified' attribute (close enough anyway). But, when I add these into iPhoto - they've all got the wrong event dates. Surely iPhoto, if it couldn't find a 'date picture taken' it would have gone with 'date modified' - like picasa 3 does.
Any help?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter. If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in? iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time. If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
Let me know the results.

In IPhoto I changed movie dates after thumb nails were created in IMovie but the new dates are not showing up in IMovie. Is there someway to refresh the IPhoto event in IMovie?

Background: I'm transferring file folders from a Visa laptop via an external hard drive to my IMac. In the folders are photos and videos from different cameras. SO I first tried to import to IMovie but it would not recognize any of the files. So then I imported into IPhoto and both photos and videos were imported and I created events for each folder. When I first opened IMovie I had to wait for it to create "thumb nails". Then I could view the events in IMovie BUT the video clips are not together because they have vastly different dates and are mixed with videos from other events. I looked at the dates and said I can fix that in IPhoto which i did but those new dates are not showing up in IMovie. I think I need to somehow refresh the event data that Imovie is using but have not found how to do that in either IPhoto or IMovie.
I'm doing this on three events with about 100 photos and videos. But I have many 1000s more to do so need to know how to either fix this or delete these events, reimport, change the dates, then open again in IMovie. I'm sure that would work but I can't understand why changing the dates in IPhoto is not being reflected in IMovie.
Appreciate any tips or pointers.
OBTW this is my first question as a first time Apple owner.

Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

Accidentally merged all iPhoto events. How do I get my event data back?

I accidentally merged my iPhoto events all into one event. I'm using iPhoto 11 on Yosemite. My problem is, my last backup to my external hard drive was in April 2014 (I know, my fault). Is there a way to restore the events? I notice in the metadata there are event files that date up to April 2014. Can I use these to restore the events? I realize I might not be able to get the events from April 2014 onward restored. But is there a way to at least restore the events created prior to April 2014?
I'm not really sure how all the metadata and backup files work so any help is appreciated.

Well no one has ever found a way.
Try rebuild with iPhoto Library manager.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I can export many iphoto events to a Data stick. I want to do the same with a DVD. When I do the DVD window is blank. If I drag and drop can only do one. Help

I can "export", using file, many iphoto events to a data disk. When I do the same to a DVD the DVD window is blank and nothing has been exported. When I use drag and drop to a DVD it works but I can only get one event on the disk. How do I export many iphoto events to a DVD. I am using a write only DVD. I am using a Mac Book Pro OS 10. When I click on the data stick icon on my desk top a window comes up. It lists the various events that I have exported. If i click on an event each picture shows up in a list. I can click on the picture and view a jpeg photo or view a avi video. When I export I select "original" as the file type. When I export to a DVD and klick on the the DVD icon the window shows up but it is blank.

I tried a solution that I found in the forum in which one should delete file com.apple.iPhoto but I don't have the said file.
Any ideas?

Yes you do. In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
You can then find and delete the necessary preference file.

Change iPhoto events in Aperture to date order, instead of ABC?

I like how Aperture 2.0 works with iPhoto imports better, listing events. However, it lists my iPhoto events in ABC order. I'd much prefer them to be listed in order by the date they were shot or whatever like in iPhoto. Anyway to do this?

If, like me, you used Events as your main organizational tool - you will really be disappointed in Photos.   My Albums transferred, but I had over 100,000 pictures, taken over 13 years and organized mostly by the "Event/Title" line above each group of pictures.   Those titles did not transfer to Photos.
They do have an Album titled iPhoto Events and a lot of events are in there - however, not all and they are in a completely random order.   In my case, over 3,000 events with absolutely no way to find anything other than scroll through or possibly search. Also, at this time there is no way to move forward with Event organization as it does not exist.   There is not way in Photos to label each days photos with an event or title.   It's like one big huge shoebox with date order the only organization. Ridiculous.
I mostly use a 35mm SLR Camera without any GPS designation - so I now have 109,000 photos in one big list organized by nothing but the date taken or scanned.
I have also scanned a lot of family history photos and old family photos - fortunately I put most of those in Albums - otherwise Photos is very excited to just list them according to the date I scanned them which has nothing to do with the content of the photo.
Definitely back up your iPhoto before you do anything.   I am looking for an outside program that will continue my organization and not throw everything out on the whim of people who just use photos for social media and sharing.   This change made me realize that Apple has no intention of creating and keeping a serious organization system for amateur and professional photographers who have a large number of files that need to be organized and kept for many years.

Changing an Event Date

I like the way Iphoto arranges photos into Events, which are displayed in date sequence.
I am about to start scanning my old slides, but I would like them to appear for example under 1971.
How can I arrange that?

It's a little tedious but this works.
iPhoto gets these details from the Exif of the photo. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. However, scanned images don't have Exif - and indeed, it would be off from the date of the photo if it did.
So: Scan all your 1971 images. Scan the images to a folder on the desktop. When the scanning is done, import that folder to iPhoto. An Event will be made of it but the date will be incorect.
So, in that Event select all the Photos and go Photos -> Batch Change and set the date to something in 1971. If you don't have specific dates for the particular photos, just choose a 'catch-all' Jan 1, June 30, whatever.
Now all the photos have a 1971 date, but the Event date is still wrong.
So, select all the Photos again and go Events -> Create Event

Event Dates

I've noticed a common thread concerning event dates and the lack of iPhoto's (iPhoto 08) ability to correctly record a range of dates for several photos taken over a period of days.
I've imported a series of photos from my digital camera into iPhoto and have entered description and event title. When I click on "all events" I find that the range of dates for the recently entered event is totally bogus.
For example, two days ago I imported a series of 15 photos into iPhoto 08 and created an event. The photos were taken over a four day period yet the range of dates in the event was six months, including 5 months of 2009.
I followed the help menu procedures to adjust event date and time and what happened was extremely odd: I succeeded in changing the date of the initial photo in the event. I then tried to change the initial date once more but I couldn't make an adjustment to the dates (the option was grayed out) at all and if I did change the initial date by one day, all the photo dates were shifted forward by one day so now I had the exact same range of dates (including those well into 2009) only shifted forward by one day.
I finally went to a batch change which only allowed the entry of one date and not a range of dates. As a result, the date data has been totally hosed in the event.
I called Apple support (iPhoto guys) for an answer and they had absolutely no idea what was wrong, how to correct it nor could they offer any help beyond what was included in the help menu.
So, my question to all the Apple experts out there is: What in the world am I doing wrong and why can't iPhoto accurate record the dates from the camera?
Finally, my iMac automatically updates the software so I am running the latest version of iPhoto AND the date/time set up in the camera are spot on.

A new album is created in iPhoto and a memory card full of images imported.
The dates range from 29th Dec 08 to the 4th Jan 09.
All dates within the iPhoto Information panel are correct.

There was one additional movie file from the 30th Nov 08 and was accidently imported with the pictures.

I wanted to stitch a few panoramic photos together in photoshop.
Happy with the results I saved the file but forgot to chooses a new location.
The file was saved within the iPhoto package. I had to do a search to locate the file and noticed that numerous files from that same import were not in their correctly dated folders.
I know there should be no reason for me to look inside the package (as Terence pointed out) but seeing that some dated folders were either missing or contained less than the amount of photos i'd taken I got twitched.
A lot of files have been placed in the folder dated 30th Nov 08 (i.e. the earliest dated movie on the memory card) even though they were taken after this ...could this be the cause I wonder?
I'd be interested to know how iPhoto sorts and names its files...or is it best to be ignorant?!
If something should happen to iPhoto - a bug/corruption or something, anything! - it could happen. I just want to be able, at the very least go to the original files and re-import them knowing when I took them and not have to go through each image to check.
The majority of these photos will be kept forever (my children might say otherwise!) and who knows what the best digital photo album will be in 5 years, it might not be iPhoto.
I'm still not panicking but I do backup my backups - it's just not worth loosing it.
I had a suspected corrupt database a year ago which i thought was sorted...quite possibly there's a connection.
This only effected the albums in iPhoto not the actual folders within the package contents.

Can I find an iphoto events in time machine

Using a macbook pro with Lion 10.7 how can I find an iphoto event in time machine hard drive back up. When I look in picture folder for a back up date I see some individual pictures and an icon for iphoto library. I thought clicking on that would show me iphoto application with the events just as it looks in current time only with the events of the past date. It does not.

Not really - you need to restore the iPhoto library then open it with iPhoto - iPhoto can not access TM backups - they have to be restored first

I have lost all my iPhoto events. Or, am I missing something here?
I just upgraded to the new Photos from iPhoto on my iMac. The new Photos app imported and reorganized my photos by date and mixed all of my previous well organized iPhoto events into a jumbled lot.
How can I re-sort these photos back into an Event type of organization?

Moments are the new Events. All of your events in iPhoto are not Moments in Photo and were also brought over as an album. Open the sidebar with the Option+Command+S key combination and look in the folder titled "iPhoto Events".
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.
