IPhoto Events In Browser

In the iPhoto Browser within Aperture iPhoto Events are organized very differently to the way they are displayed within iPhoto itself. Is there a setting or preference I can change to make Aperture's iPhoto browser present Events as iPhoto itself does?
Failing that is it possible for me to work directly from iPhoto as I import/export multiple photographs from the iPhoto Library into the Aperture Library?

In the iPhoto Library events are displayed from the oldest to the most recent, simple and logical but in the Aperture iPhoto Browser the events are organized by day of the year. So it it starts 1st Jan 2003, then 1st jan 2004, 1st jan 2005 etc then it goes to the 2nd jan and shows all photos from that day from all years etc.
It is hard to not get confused when seeing such a different ordering of photos and this is important as I wish to import photos a few at a time so that I can write metadata etc and create keywords, create new albums for all photos as they come into Aperture. If I import the entire iPhoto library at once it will wreck my improved organizational structure in Aperture.
With two different ways of looking at the iPhoto library I figure it will be easy to get confused and start missing photos.
I have worked out an alternative way to import that will work - I will copy the iPhoto library to another location and then just delete images as I get them into Aperture and that way I will be able to clear on what has been imported and what has not.
For the longer term however I would like the iPhoto library to appear the same way in the Aperture iPhoto browser as it appears within iPhoto.

  • Aperture - Importing iphoto events - original & edited copies

Sorry if this has been asked before!
I'm going through each event in iphoto tossing out the bad photos and editing the good ones. Once I've finished with each event I'm trying to move them into Aperture one by one and then deleting the event from iphoto.
I'm doing this by going to File - Import - Show iphoto browser and importing the event as a new project. Problem is that every time I look at my new project I have two copies, the iphoto original and iphoto edited.
Obviously I only want one copy of each photo (the edited version). I therefore have several questions...
    1) If I delete the iphoto original version what are the consequences?
    2) I wish the library to use a 'managed' system rather than a referenced system. Will this still happen if I move the events one by one (it doesn't give me as many options as if I were to move the entire library, which I'm not ready to do yet)
    3) The only way I've found to stop two copies importing is by copying the events from iphoto to the desktop and then importing them to Aperture - does this cause degradation of the photo?
    Thanks in advance,
    Janna

    Janna,
the most efficient option to move from iPhoto to Aperture is indeed to import the whole iPhoto Library into Aperture at once: This way you will preserve most of the work you invested in setting up your iPhoto Library (albums, books, slideshows, keywords) and can avoid to import duplicates for many of your images, without having to decide if you want to keep the original or the edited version.
One of the big advantages of Aperture is the lossless workflow: When you edit an image the original master will remain as it is, and Aperture will only store the steps necessary to render the final version of the image - it does not actually create the edited image until it is needed on export. So you can have many different edited  versions of the same image without needing much extra space. When you import your complete iPhoto lIbrary at once (after weeding it out), then Aperture will try to import your iPhoto originals and the edited versions exactly like this, as proper master image - version pairs, so that you keep your iPhoto edits, but can always revert to the original master, in a space saving fashion.
The way you are importing now forces you to decide if you rather want the edited version or the original master, and if you decide that you want both, then you will need twice as much storage space.
    1) If I delete the iphoto original version what are the consequences?
You will never be able to revert to the original if you find that you made a mistake when editing your images; or when better algorithms/ raw processing become available. If you only want to keep one of the images I'd strongly suggest to keep the original and not the edited version.
    2) I wish the library to use a 'managed' system rather than a referenced system. Will this still happen if I move the events one by one (it doesn't give me as many options as if I were to move the entire library, which I'm not ready to do yet)
No proble, even if you import initially als managed master files, you can always relocate the managed images to a folder of your choosing afterwards and thus turn your library into a referenced library.
    3) The only way I've found to stop two copies importing is by copying the events from iphoto to the desktop and then importing them to Aperture - does this cause degradation of the photo?
That will depend on your export settings. If you export the original you will not loose any quality on export, but exporting the edited versions will depend on the quality setting for the versions.
If you import your whole iPhoto library at once, Aperture will mirror the structure of your iPhoto Library; iPhoto events will be mapped to projects, and you will keep your albums, books, etc.
All your work you are doing now to prepare for your transit you could do as easily in Aperture and the problems you asked about could be avoided.
Good Luck and welcome to Aperture!

  • When dragging an iPhoto event to iDVD, the order in which the pictures appear changes without any apparent rhyme or reason.  Any ideas on how to prevent that from happening?

When importing an iPhoto event into iDVD (iLife '11 versions of both) by dragging it from iPhoto to iDVD, the sequence of the photos is far different in the iDVD project than in the iPhoto event, without any apparent rhyme or reason for the change.  Any way to avoid having to resort all the photos in iDVD?

Create an album from that Event and sort the photos the way you want.  Then drag that album icon from the Media Browser in iDVD into the slideshow area.  They will import in the order that's in the album.

  • Referencing a single Iphoto Event into Aperture

    Hi Everyone,
I recently imported my entire iPhoto library into Aperture making sure that 'store files' was set to 'In their current location' so that Aperture would reference from iPhoto. This worked fine.
My problem... I recently imported a new batch of pictures into iPhoto and realized after the fact that my Aperture Library was now 'out of sync'. I then used the 'Import from iPhoto Browser' feature and selected the new event in iPhoto that I wanted Aperture to reference.
However, even though I have 'store files in their current location' still selected... Aperture copies the pictures from this iPhoto event into it's Library as a new project/event. Where am I going wrong? I would prefer to keep the originals stored in iPhoto and not have them duplicated into Aperture's Library.
I simply would like Aperture to reference them as it is doing for my other events that were originally referenced when I first set up Aperture.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    K

Simply, you can't. If you import Event by Event that cannot be used with Referenced Files, only managed ones. You can relocate the Masters afterwards, of course, should you wish.
Remember Aperture is not designed to be used with iPhoto, but instead of it.

  • Can I find an iphoto events in time machine

Using a macbook pro with Lion 10.7 how can I find an iphoto event in time machine hard drive back up.  When I look in picture folder for a back up date I see some individual pictures and an icon for iphoto library.  I thought clicking on that would show me iphoto application with the events just as it looks in current time only with the events of the past date.  It does not.

Not really - you need to restore the iPhoto library then open it with iPhoto - iPhoto can not access TM backups - they have to be restored first

  • I have lost all my iPhoto events after upgrading to Photos Version 1.0 (209.52.0)

I have lost all my iPhoto events. Or, am I missing something here?
I just upgraded to the new Photos from iPhoto on my iMac. The new Photos app imported and reorganized my photos by date and mixed all of my previous well organized iPhoto events into a jumbled lot.
How can I re-sort these photos back into an Event type of organization?
I think I had several thousand events.

Moments are the new Events.  All of your events in iPhoto are not Moments in Photo and were also brought over as an album. Open the sidebar with the Option+Command+S key combination and look in the folder titled "iPhoto Events".
There's a way to simulate events in Photos.
When the library was first migrated there was a folder created titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events are represented by an album in the folder.
When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File ➙ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the folder
When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

  • Can I move an iPhoto event from Mac to Mac?

My wife and I both have MacBooks with our own iPhoto libraries. Although we each have our own photos in our libraries, there are times when we both want the same photos in our library. Sometimes we simply each download the photos from the camera and do our own thing in our separate libraries. But there are times when we are traveling with the camera and just one MacBook and we'll download photos into events and edit them. When we get home, we often want to move these photos (usually edited and nicely organized into events) to the other MacBook. I've been exporting the photos to a temporary folder, transferring them to the other MacBook over our network or using Firewire, and then importing them into iPhoto on the other MacBook.
Is there a way to move an iPhoto event from one MacBook to another? If so, will it bring the "original" (prior to being edited photos) as well as the edited versions? I understand the whole non-destructive editing thing.
I've looked in Finder, opened iPhoto Library with "Show Package Contents", and noticed that there are folders for each year that I have photos (e.g. 1999, 2000, 2001, etc.), and in each year folder there seems to be a folder for each event. In the event folders are the .jpg files. I was thinking that perhaps I could just copy the event folder from one MacBook to the other (placing it in the same place in the "year" folder), but I wasn't sure if this would screw up the iPhoto database that I drop them into. I'm pretty sure that the "importing" process of getting photos into iPhoto involves more than just dropping photos in a folder.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Use iPhoto Library Manager as Terence suggested. It would work like this .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • IPhoto Events Duplicated Suddenly-do I delete?

In the last month (and there WAS an iphoto update during that time) I suddenly have dupicate iphoto EVENTS but there are 3 different kinds:
1)Duplicate events: same EVENT NAME, same NUMBER PHOTOS.
2)Duplicate events: slightly altered EVENT NAME, same NUMBER PHOTOS. (this may be a windows transfer issue** see note below)
3)Duplicate EVENT NAME but SOME photos missing in 1 event, and complete in another event of the SAME NAME.
Should I assume that all my photos are fine and just delete the duplicate event and delete the event of the same name but with fewer pics in that event (assuming the event with more pics is "safer" to keep)?
I'm somewhat new to iphoto (on it for 2 years): can I assume if I click on "PHOTOS" in the left pane, those are ALL my photo's in my "Photo Library" or is my Photo Library actually my "EVENTS"? or are photos and events essentialy the same thing? If it exists in "PHOTOS" is it an official jpeg-picture-file? How can there be 2 files of the EXACT SAME NAME?? Both sets of pics say "DSC-0001" (and the numbers go up from there) in the PHOTO LIBRARY. Why doesn't the Photo Library reject that since 2 files cannot normally be in the same place?
I could use Time Machine and replace the photo library with one from a month ago. But how do I know what really happened? This whole thing is unsettling. I'm assuming I have not lost a single of my 44,000 pics I've loaded but why did iPhoto duplicate about 10 events?
**And even more odley: why did it duplicate 3 of them with slightly different names. They may have had these "different file names" when I transfered them from a Windows Computer 2 years ago, but I can't remember and I've not had this duplicate problem happen until earlier this month.
My spouse is saying we should download Picassa and go back to the that but I REALLY like iPhoto and want to keep it. I need to feel that my photo library is SAFE and seeing it in a window-tree (alla Picassa and windows) seems familiar, I know it's not inherently safer than iPhoto/iMac but this duplicating event is unsettling.

are photos and events essentialy the same thing?
Yes - two different ways to view your photos in the iPhoto library
Why doesn't the Photo Library reject that since 2 files cannot normally be in the same place?
Because they are not in the same place - iPhoto is not about files - it is about photos - iPhoto keeps track of the files in a folder structure - you do not ever go into it
What changes have you made recently? for there to be a duplicate in iPhoto you would have had to import it - iPhoto does not duplicate photos
    That is totally your choice
having your photos safe is NOT a function of the manager you are using but of your backup systems - iPhoto will not lose your photos nor will Picassa - but system, hardware and user failures will - a backup is the only way to be sure your photos are safe
Note that Picassa has many disadvantages re iPhoto - it does not integrate into other Apple software  - it does not provide lossless editing - it does not allow you to upgrade to professional level photo management software (Aperture) directly and it does not integrate with the iPad, iPod and iPhone like iPhotos does or with Photo Stream and iCLoud.
As to duplicates I suggest using Duplicate annailator, DeCloner or iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  for identifying them

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Accidentally merged all iPhoto events. How do I get my event data back?

I accidentally merged my iPhoto events all into one event. I'm using iPhoto 11 on Yosemite. My problem is, my last backup to my external hard drive was in April 2014 (I know, my fault). Is there a way to restore the events? I notice in the metadata there are event files that date up to April 2014. Can I use these to restore the events? I realize I might not be able to get the events from April 2014 onward restored. But is there a way to at least restore the events created prior to April 2014?
I'm not really sure how all the metadata and backup files work so any help is appreciated.

Well no one has ever found a way.
Try rebuild with iPhoto Library manager.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How to solve issue with strange iphoto events shown in itunes for sync IOS devices ? This issue is very old and not been fixed by apple... terrible

all softwares latest version january 2013.
I see in itunes many strange crazy iphoto events that in iphoto do not exist.
These vents are named as data and contains just few photos.
each event can be sync with IOS devices, but that event is not in iphoto !
It looks like miniatures... no way to solve this issue making all possible maintenance in iphoto library.
THis issue is very old, very terrible, people start to have doubts about iphoto as a reliable software.
    Need a fix asap.
    Apple please help!
I were with 2 hours at genius bar but nothing.
Genius told me apple have been informed and they are working on a solution..... this 4 months ago !!!
    Need solution asap
    THanks
    Fabio

Apple aren't here. As you're the only person with this problem that I've seen on here, I would suspect that its more a local problem on your machine than something Apple need to fix.
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache.
Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

  • I can export many iphoto events to a Data stick. I want to do the same with a DVD. When I do the DVD window is blank. If I drag and drop can only do one. Help

I can "export", using file, many iphoto events to a data disk. When I do the same to a DVD the DVD window is blank and nothing has been exported. When I use drag and drop to a DVD it works but I can only get one event on the disk. How do I export many iphoto events to a DVD. I am using a write only DVD. I am using a Mac Book Pro OS 10. Thanks in advance.
    Gord

When I click on the data stick icon on my desk top a window comes up. It lists the various events that I have exported. If i click on an event each picture shows up in a list. I can click on the picture and view a jpeg photo or view a avi video. When I export I select "original" as the file type. When I export to a DVD and klick on the the DVD icon the window shows up but it is blank.
