IPhoto faces and places lost after format?

Hi all,
I am about to format my HD to have a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard. Meanwhile I have to say that I have a full backup using TimeMachine. Will the details on my photos (places, faces, rating etc.) be lost after the format?
Also do I need to pay attention to something specific? Does anyone have anything to advice me to avoid or to do,cause it will be the first time I'm doing it.
Thank you in advance,
Nick

I tried again with iPhoto updater and this time it worked on 2 of my 3 libraries so the albums and folders were preserved. I also had not realised  that iPhoto updater needed to be opened from Utilities folder nad had thought it would work automatically once downloaded (one -to -one in store trainer had not realised this either).
I then remembered that there was one .mov file shot on my " still "digital camera in an iPhoto album. Once I removed this iPhoto updater worked on the 3rd library so old folders and albums preserved.
Even then there was one small folder of images which  has not transfered via Target mode. For unknown reasons when I transferred these images from camera to old MCP they were jumbled and not in normal date order. I will try transferring these images to new MBP on a memory stick.
Thanks for persuading me to persist

  • IPhoto albums and folders lost after transfer of library to new Mac

After transferring iPhoto library from old Mac Book Pro (running OS X 10.8.5, iPhoto 08 7.1.5) to new Mac Book Pro (OSX 10.9.1, iPhoto 9.5) all of the albums and folders from the old library have been lost and photos are just listed as events. It would take a long time to rearrange all the photos into the original albums and folders. Apple one -to -one sessions in store x2 unable to solve just said that the old library must be corrupted
I still have the old photo album arranged in albums and folders on the old Mac.
I also have iPhoto buddy installed on old Mac and have tried transferring to new Mac with and without iPhoto installed but either way albums and folders were lost.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Would upgrading old Mac Book Pro to Mavericks and then upgrading iPhoto before transferring the library be a solution?

  • How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

How can I synchronize my iPhoto events? my iTunes doesn't read them and with the app Images in the iPad I can only find Photos, Albums, Faces and Places, not Events.

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • Faces and Places are missing on my iPhoto.

The Faces and Places PROGRAM is missing on my iPhoto. I tried updating, but no good. I have iLife 09. :\

Looks like I had '09 at one point in time, then I had a flubb up with icons and stuff. I just wound up updating everything to '11 and Lion.

  • Will we ever be able to turn off faces and places in iphoto?

Will we ever be able to turn off faces and places in iphoto? Ever?

Thanks for the response.  I was hoping I'd just missed where to turn off faces.  Yes, I can ignore, but it's annoying when it's constantly asking me for the names of light/shadow patterns that have nothing to do with people (most of my photography is not of people).  I'd forgotten places can be turned off, and apparently I do have it turned off, but I still get the box with the world map open all the time.
    Anyway, thanks for your help!

  • Windows : Syncing photos Events, Faces and Places from Phtoshop Elements 8

    Hi everyone,
I buy an iPad yesturday and i try to sync my photos.
I'm a PC user (windows 7 x64) so I try to use Photoshop Elements 8 in order to sync my photo with iTunes as describe in the iTunes manual.
Unfortunatly, I can sync the photo albums only ... but I can't sync events, faces and places information...
Is it normal ? Doesn't PSE 8 support the syncing of these information ??
If this is correct, is there an issue to have a full support in iPad Photo or do you know some app able to sync this ?
Thanks for your replies and excuse my english!
    Mathieu from France.

Your English is better than my French.
For the folders syncing with windows pc's Photo albums:
    1) Create a master sync folder on your pc with no photo files at the root level of the folder.
    2) Create sub-folders within the master sync folder with the subfolders named what you want the ipad's photo albums to be named.
    3) Place the photo files you want to sync in the appropriate subfolder within the master sync folder.
    4) In itunes on the photos tab, select the master folder as the sync folder.
    5) After syncing, each subfolder will be an album on the ipad with the proper photos contained there-in.
For the Places; The ipad should display Places information for any photo with geotagging data. This is stored with the photo in the metadata. It is the Lat/Long of the photo. This info must be included on the photo file before syncing.
For the Events, I use separate folders within the master sync folder for each event. (see above).
I am not sure how Events and Faces works with PSE8 or if the method PSE8 uses is compatable with the ipad. iPhoto on a mac works for events and faces on the ipad, based on posts I have read here.

  • How to KILL the Criminals::Faces and Places ???

I hate Faces and Places. They both are useless to me and for many others, and only terribly slowing down iPhoto. I wish I could kill both of them...
Any way to do that ?

For Places just ignore it and in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane set Look up Places to "Never".
For Faces just ignore it as Terence suggested. However, there is a way to disable some of the Faces features so it does not create face files and increase the size of the library. After making a temporary backup copy of your iPhoto LIbrary try the following:
1 - open the library like this.
2 - in the Database folder move this file to the Trash: Faces.db.
3 - close the package/folder and launch iPhoto. Close it after a moment.
4 - open the package, find the new version of the file and lock it via the Info window for the file.
5 - while viewing the contents of the package type Command+F to start a search.
6 - set the criteria of the search to: Kind is Image and Name Contains "face".
7 - select all of the files in the search results window and drag to the Trash.
8 -close the package and launch iPhoto.
You will get the faces spinning wheel as it tries to index the library the first time it's opened but it won't be able to write to the database file if you should try to add a face and won't create any new jpeg faces files.
Of course make a backup of your library before trying this and no guarantee implied.

  • Faces and Places not showing in photo app on iPad

Before when i first got my iPad I remember seeing the faces and places tabs on the top bar of the photo app but now when I open the app i can only see albums pictures and events. How do I get them back?

So I noticed the same thing you guys are talking about, and it has been driving me crazy. I have a mac mini, with ilife 08. v 7.1.5 i think. I do not have the places and faces in my iphoto. But I do have an android phone that has geotagging. I got photos off my android that were geotagged and put them in an album in iphoto. when I synced that event to my photos on my ipad. the places tab reappeared. The odd thing is, the photos that I originally saw in Places before it vanished are no longer tagged in the map, neither are some other photos that I took with my android that were supposedly geotagged. so no, you do not need only a mac, and no you do not ilife 09 for this to work. I am assuming it will be much easier with ilife 09, but i can life without this feature for $70. FYI. hope it helps

  • Keep faces and places when transferring pictures

Hi, I just created a new library in Iphoto, but once I did my transfer there is no faces or places that has been setup already in the old library. Any sugestions of how can I keep the same original file with faces and places?
    Thanks,

What you've done is export (via drag and drop) to the Finder and then import to the new Library (via Drag and Drop)
This method misses any metadata you added in iphoto, plus doesn't get the Original of any edited photos.
If you want, you can export (File -> Export and check the box at Places Information) with the Places Ino. There is no way to get Faces onto a photo. If you want to get that you'll need to use iPhoto Library Manager

  • Faces and Places syncing problem

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased iLife 11 and I created faces and places. Everything looks good on iPhoto but when I sync faces and places on iPhone, all the photos are jumbled: wrong photos are showing in faces, some photos are missing and a lot of photos in places are not at the correct location. I tried re-syncing the whole library, first removing it and then re-adding it to iPhoto but to no avail. Help?

I've noticed that photos I had faces from iPhoto 09 are not syncing (I only had a few).
In the manual list, the faces are not an option to select them. Tried removing and resyncing library and no avail.

  • Copying 1 or more photo's while retaining faces and places

How can I copy one or more photos with faces and places information on an external HD and paste this photo(s) to a a mac of a friend ?

    1. You can export the pic from iPhoto (File -> Export: kind: jpeg and check the box at "Location Information" and complete the export to the desktop or whereever you want it.
You cannot export Faces information. There is no standard for such metadata.
If the other person is also using iPhoto and it's the same version as yours then you can link the two macs together and use iPhoto Library Manager to move the files and metadata between Libraries.

  • Windows : Syncing photos Events, Faces and Places from PSE8 to an iPad with iTunes

    Hi everyone,
I buy an iPad yesturday and i try to sync my photos.
I'm a PC user so i try to use PSE in order to sync my photo with iTunes as describe in the iTunes manual.
Unfortunatly, I can sync the photo albums only ... but I can't sync events, faces and places information...

Hello, Mathieu. I think that is normal. From the ipad user guide:
Photos organizes collections by Albums, Events, Faces, and Places. Places uses the location information encoded within each photo, and not all photos may have this information. Events and Faces must first be configured in iPhoto or Aperture on a Mac, then synced to iPad.

I know how to import foto's from my MacBook to my iMac. But how can I import the foto's incl. faces and places?

  • Copy Faces and Places between libraries

I am new to Aperture 3. I am creating libraries for our camping trips. Each library will hold well over 1000 photos. I know how to use Faces and Places - the question is, when I start a new library at the end of this year, is there any way I can copy the Faces data at least over to the new library so I won't have to go through identifying everyone again? iPhoto, and now Aperture, have gotten pretty good at identifying who is who. I would hate to have to re-train it every time I open a new library with many of the same players in it.
    Thanks.
    Wayne

It gives me space on my hard drive. I am new to Aperture, so I am open to other suggestions, but once I get several gig of photos in one library, most of which is for archival use not active use, I move the library to one of my external hard drives - still have access to it but it's not on my hard drive. So far, I have created a new library with 5 years' worth of photos in it. So that's the issue. I know Aperture could fill my entire hard drive and still function. I just like to have room for other apps to work.

  • Keeping Faces and Places ids intact while mass coping photos.

I am trying to transfer photos from my wife's iPhoto account to my iPhoto account without losing the Faces and Places id tags by simply transferring the files. What am I missing when wanting to transfer all the photos with the face and place id's intact, so I don't have to redo the work of naming faces and places?

Faces and places (and keywords, etc) are stored in the iPhoto database - not the photo files - so to transfer them you must move the entire iPhoto library intact as a single entity - and must have the same or newer version of iPhoto on the new computer - moving the files will not do it - you must move the entire database at once
