IPhoto file container vs. Adobe Lightroom workflow

I primarily use Adobe Lightroom 3 to import and manage my digital imagery. (stills and video) There are features in iPhoto that I want to take advantage of but I have been unable to find a way to get iPhoto to accept my photos in the file structure where they reside. iPhoto insists on putting a copy of the files into it's own iPhoto container. Is there a way to force iPhoto 10 or 11 to use the file structure I maintain through Lightroom? I have been using a workaround of exporting my RAW files to a JPeg then importing that JPeg into iPhoto. When the project is done then I delete the files so I can eliminate the duplicate files on the hard drive. Is there a better way?

You can have iPhoto reference the files on disk - (The iPhoto advanced preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" has been unchecked) which is strongly NOT recommended - but this has many issues including if the path changes for any reason - human - hardware failure or upgrade - updating the referenced links is difficult to impossible - plus any edits or changes done in iPhoto are not reflected in the referenced photos - if you only use them for projects and do not go back to them this should work for you

  • Maximum file size for Adobe LightRoom?

I was just wondering in anyone here had an idea on the maximum file ( DNG/RAW/Tiff/JPG ) size LightRoom will handle given enough RAM and a fast processor?

    Dear Paig,
This is a tough one as this is a scan of a B&W 6X6 B&W negative done on a very high res Scitech scanner. It is a .tif file and the file size is only 139MB. What it would equate to in MP is hard to tell. I will be trying to use LR on scans I do on a Nikon SuperCoolScan 9000 and it too renders 48 bit color tif image files.
I wounder if more RAM would help. The Dual Core 2.66 xeon processors should be plenty fast enough to deal with LT 2.3
I had read some discussions of memory leak problems with LR and it seems as though this might be the case as after 15 adjustments and nothing elso open on the MacPro to see my used RAM up to 4.5 GB indicates that something is amiss...
    Thoughts anyone?

  • Using iPhoto together with Adobe Lightroom

I use Adobe Lightroom for my image organizing/tagging needs, since it's way more powerful than iPhoto in this area. I would however like to use iPhoto for my daily image browsing, syncing with my iPhone and for ordering prints/books ++. The way I do this now, is I let iPhoto scan the folder where I have my images. After a while when it gets outdated, I delete the database and rescan in iPhoto. Kinda cumbersome...
    So:
    1. Is there a way I can make iPhoto rescan my image folder? Maybe some script or something that can do it for me?
    2. When I rate images in LR, the ratings are stored in the IPTC Urgency field. When I import to iPhoto it doesn't import this as rating. Any way I can convert IPTC Urgency to iPhoto rating?
    3. Would Aperture be a better choice for working together with iPhoto, or would it be just as cumbersome?

    In reverse order:
    3. Would Aperture be a better choice for working together with iPhoto, or would it be just as cumbersome?
It’s a lot better. You can grab your previews from Aperture right into iPhoto using a Media Browser, but given that Aperture will do all those things - books, syncing with iPhone etc - you’ll probably need to do it less. Like iPhoto, Aperture is integrated throughout the OS, in every Open... Dialogue, through Media Browsers to integrate with other apps and so on. The primary advantage of using Aperture is that +at least the two apps know each other exist+.
    2. When I rate images in LR, the ratings are stored in the IPTC Urgency field. When I import to iPhoto it doesn't import this as rating. Any way I can convert IPTC Urgency to iPhoto rating
I don’t think so. There is no real way to move ratings between any apps that I know of. This area of metadata is still in its infancy.
    1. Is there a way I can make iPhoto rescan my image folder? Maybe some script or something that can do it for me?
No. However there are apps out there that can watch that folder for you and execute specific actions on events occurring. You may be able to cook up an Automator action or Folder Action script that will import to iPhoto when a file is added to the Folder. Or use an app like Hazel to do it for you.
Update: I’m not sure what this Lightroom plug-in brings to the party, but it may help.

  • IPhoto and Adobe Bridge Workflow

I finally picked up Photoshop CS3 and am curious as to the best method of integrating the applications in the most effective manner.
I do like iPhoto, and I've used it extensively for some time now, but I wonder if it's better suited as simply a program to show and share my completed photos.
Would it be best to use Bridge to organize and work with the photos directly out of my camera (including RAW files) and then merely use iPhoto as the last means of displaying them?
It should be noted that the only Adobe application I use is Photoshop, so there is no need for thorough integration with other Adobe products.
I suppose I'm curious as to how people might make use of Photoshop, Bridge and iPhoto in the most useful way possible.
    Thanks in advance.

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • How to switch from iPhoto to Adobe Lightroom.

Question: I would like to start using Lightroom as my photo editing software but up until now all my photos have been stored on my iMac and in iPhoto. I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to 1) transfer my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and then 2) transfer that to Lightroom. I’ve been reading about this on the Web but am skeptical of trying to do it myself.
Find out the answers to these two questions in Eduardo Angel's new article, where he explains how to easily transfer your iPhoto library to an external device and then import into any version of Adobe Lightroom in 3 simple steps.

Sorry - this is an iPhoto forum - for Elements support you neede to use an elements forum
To get your photos out of iPhoto you export them (file menu ==> export)

  • Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my Canon Mark III 5D Camera.

Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Bridge does not recognize the raw files from my new Canon Mark III 5D Camera.  How can I get my files open to view and edit?  I am using LR3, Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3.  Do I need to upgrade these programs or is there another way to get these programs to recognize my files?
When I try opening the raw images in Lightroom, the thumbnails say "Preview unavailable for this file"  ... when I click "import" an error message pops up that says "The files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."
When I try opening the raw images in Photoshop, an error message pops up saying "could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
When I try opening the raw images in Bridge, it just shows an icon with the file name and CR2.
    Please help!!!

Unless I missed an announcement, today, LR6 isn't available, yet, right?  Only Adobe employees and beta testers would know what LR6 does differently at this point and they're all sworn to secrecy.
LR5 is available as a standalone version.
    PS-CS6 is available as a serial-number-licensed version.
PS-CC + LR5 are also available as a Photography Plan subscription for $10/month with a minimum OS versions of OSX 10.7 (and probably 10.8, soon) and Windows 7.
Bridge is part of PS, not a separate program.
LR5 standalone and LR+PS-CC plan are both available on this page:  http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software.html
PS-CS6 can be found on this page:  Creative Suite 6 which can be found by searching www.adobe.com for Photoshop CS6 and clicking the Buy link in the on-the-fly search results.
As with any new Adobe software, it might be wise to run it in trial mode for a few days/weeks to see if it works well with your computer, before purchasing and finding out you might need a new computer, first.

  • How do I import photos from iPhoto in to adobe lightroom?

I've read in several forums that to do this you must go into the finder right click on iPhoto.  Click show package contents.   This pulls up a file named contents.   All of the forums say to either look for a masters file or a original file and copy and paste it to the desktop. This is supposed to then allow lightroom to see the packaged file.   I can't seem to find either file.  Im not sure if its because the forums I've been looking at is outdated or if they just completely changed the name of the file with a newer update.   Either way I tried to do this with a couple of the files I thought might work i.e.. library, mac os.   Nothing has worked.   I am very new to using mac.  I just literally bought this computer yesterday so I really don't want to try to much blindly but being able to edit images with professional software is the whole reason why I bought it.    Pleases Help!!!!!!

Don't do any of that. Just export the photos from iPhoto
    File -> Export
to folders in the Finder. That's the supported way and has the added advantage that you can use the names you've given to your Events or Albums as well.

  • Adobe Lightroom on MacBook Pro does not see my iphoto library

Adobe Lightroom on MacBook Pro does not see my "iphoto library"

    Hello.
The problem is that the iPhoto library is inside of iPhoto. Lightroom won't let you select it because it's basically a shortcut to iPhoto. Try exporting the images you need or all of them, depending on what you need.

  • Message: please select folder that contains your Adobe GoLive files

Hi, I'm really new to DW 5, I did use DW when it first came out and started to get the hang of some things, but my learning was not going as fast as I needed it to go. So I have two questions, I have searched the forums for my answers but I'm getting them in bits and peices and have also found the same question I'm about to ask, but didn't see an answer.
Anyways, first; I'm using OS X (updated to 10.6.5) I was using "GoLive" but in the middle of updating the site, GL would crash, it wasn't from anything inperticular, it would just crash, it was always around 4-5 minutes of using it. So I started using "GoLive CS" it had been working great until today, GL CS is now starting to crash on me, doesn't matter what I'm doing, it's just a time thing.
Is there anything to fix this bug?
I think I might know why, and I could be wrong.......... that this is a compatable issue, but I'm not sure. I think because they are not providing anymore updates for GoLive (any version) that pretty soon I might not even be able to use it at all, but if I'm wrong, Please help.
Now if my thoughts are correct on the first question, then can some one please help me with this message I get when trying to "Migrate" my site from Golive to Dreamweaver.
My first question tonight was going to be why do my pages look like there is nothing on the when I open any page in Dreamweaver when I saw the post about migrating your site to Dreamweaver.
I downloaded the extension for Dreamweaver, I installed it but when I go to migrate the "site" it gives me this message.
Message: please select folder that contains your Adobe GoLive files
I came back to the forums to reread the post, but what it says to change in yoour files, I can't find. It says something about changing your "root" file.
I can't find what to change.
I kind of like GoLive better, at least right now, but I tryed to use DW tonight to really compair the two, I got CS5 about 5 months ago which included Dreamweaver CS5, so I thought I would give it a try utill I opened it and all of my pages were blank. But I still didn't give up and now this is where I am.
Thanks for any help, sorry for such a long posting, but I would really like to see if I like DW with out starting all over and having to rebuild my sites from scratch in DW.

My sites were created in GoLive (i think version 6), but it started to crash, so I switched to GoLive CS (i think this is version 7).
It was working fine until yesterday. Yesterday GoLive CS started to crash, so I decided to give DreamWeaver a try since it came with the version of CS5 that I bought about 4-5 months ago.
Yes, I downloaded and installed the extention from the link, the one that talks about Dreamweaver CS4, and I also read this on that page (below is what I copied from the page)
    ========================================================================================== ===
Note also: If you created your site with GoLive CS (7)  or older and then upgraded to GoLive CS2 (8) or GoLive 9, you may  experience problems with the GoLive Migration Kit extension for  Dreamweaver CS4. If this is the case, try renaming the following:
    Rootfolder-fd > web-content
    Rootfolder-fd.settings > web-settings
    Rootfolder-fd.data > web-data
    ========================================================================================== ===
    I looked for "Rootfolder-fd -fd.setting and fd.data" I can't find them.
I was going to try and change them.

  • What Does the iPhoto Library File Contain?

Does the iPhoto Library File (located: User -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library) contain both i) the images and ii) the layout, photo sizing, photo positioning, etc. for a Book Project created in iPhoto 08? I want to move a Book Project that I have created on computer "MacA" to another computer "MacB." MacA and MacB are not on the same network, so I will need to copy the file(s).
I want to be certain that the iPhoto Library File (described above) contains ALL OF THE FILES necessary to successfully move the Book Project from MacA to MacB. Will someone kindly confirm this. Thank you. Dale

If you have not changed the default setting for "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" then you iPhoto library is totally self contained and can be successfully copied to another Mac with the same or newer version of iPhoto - if you have changed that preference (strongly not recommended) then you will have great difficulty in moving your library

  • Is Adobe Lightroom compatible with Mac's Final Cut Pro & iPhoto?

Is Adobe Lightroom compatible with Mac's Final Cut Pro?

  • Extracting JPEG files from Adobe Lightroom previews

I need to figure out how to extract previews from Adobe Lightroom as JPEG files.  I am trying to develop an external app that will read Lightroom's plugins - I need to do it in either C++, C# or Java.  So far all examples I found were in Lua.  Any help/code examples would be greatly appreciated.

I think he is looking for C/Java code, not a script/plugin.
In any case, anybody looking to recover previews should be aware that most plugins or external apps DO NOT assign a proper ICC profile to the extracted previews. The extracted previews are *usually*, meaning NOT ALWAYS AdobeRGB, but untagged: will be interpreted as sRGB. Yeah, that's why they will look different than the original.
    I don't know about JF's plugin.
(Adobe's recovery script does NOT handle ICC profiles correctly).
PreviewExporter is the only plugin I know of that handles ICC profiles properly - if anybody knows how JF's plugin handles ICC profiles - do tell.
Note: PreviewExporter includes source code - it should be straight-forward to translate to C/Java.

  • Lightroom workflow - HD setup and file locations

Has anyone waxed poetic about catalog and image file locations or workflow? How do you go about conceptualizing a drive and file storage strategy for a Lightroom workflow? Of course this will vary depending on the equipment you have, but I'd appreciate and links to stories that run through various configuration setups and the possible workflows and locations for catalog, master files and backup locations. Here's my setup:
    - Mac Pro (3GHz 8 Core) with two 750GB internal drives (one for OS X) the other for Apps and content storage); two empty drive bays for now.
    - PowerBook G4 1.2GHz w/160GB internal drive that I use on location, or as an in-lab Flash card reader if the Addonics external, Firewire card reader attached to the Mac Pro fails to see a camera card (as it sometimes does). This second in-lab scenario adds some complexity to the workflow, although the machines are linked with Cat 6, gigabit Ethernet.
    - OWC Mercury Elite Pro with two 750GB drives configured as a mirrored, software RAID on Firewire 800 for backups.
Should I set up the Lightroom catalog on the internal "content" drive and store all the actual image files there, reserving the RAID drive strictly for backups? This would mean that the RAID would only be used a redundant backup system (which is fine and what I originally planned) since it's probably slower than the single, internal drive. The problem is this: remembering to back up the files from the main content drive to the software RAID drive.
Or should I be using the slower, mirrored RAID for main content (master image file and catalog) storage.

    John, Andrew and others:
Thanks for your thoughts. Do you also use Lightroom to manage all "working" versions of Photoshop files (multiple version - edits - of files in progress)?
During my first couple of projects, I ended up creating a "Working" folder for each project outside the Nikon folder-oriented hierarchy of the original image files. I did this only out of habit rather than workflow planning, but ended up with a second workflow outside of Lightroom.
Does anyone think it's better to simply save these files (with or without the "working" folders) into the same folder hierarchy with all the Nikon originals? I'm just trying to figure out how to organize the workflow for the in-progress files.
Again, before Lightroom, I managed these files in separate folders on the hard drive, and usually moved them to a new location for final storage. Clearly, that won't work for Lightroom, but what does? I'm getting into a bit of trouble trying to manage file (and working folder) locations as I try to transition to a new, database-driven workflow.
