IPhoto file system problems (unique)

A while ago I moved all my pictures from a 2007 MacBook to a 2006 iMac. I bought the iMac from the school I attended and it was running an older version of iPhoto. Instead of "Events" they were "Rolls." Anyway, I've since updated to iPhoto '11 9.2.1. On my MacBook I frequently opened the iPhoto library to access photos for emailing or uploading rather than going through iPhoto. I've never modified any folders or photos or anything else within the file system, only in iPhoto. Ever since I updated iPhoto, however, something strange has occurred. The file tree used to mimic the events in iPhoto so it was easy to locate the pictures I wanted. Now, it is very confusing. All previous events from my MacBook are the same, but new photos aren't. After importing photos and organizing them into events, the file system doesn't reflect it. Instead, my photos within the file system are all over the place. The organization is based on the date of importing and not the events in iPhoto which frustrates me to no end since I am a bit OCD with file organization. Anyway, does anyone know what I can do? It drives me crazy. In iPhoto itself, the photos are organized by event exactly like I want. In the file system in Finder, however, it is not. You might ask why I care.... I just do. Obviously something is wrong and/or different than before.
If this has been answered before, I apologize. I've tried to do some research so if you know where, just point me in the right direction. Thank you SO much for any help!

  • IPhoto File System

I thought this was a pretty simple process.
I heard that you can make it so that when you import photos into iPhoto it will leave the pictures and/or folders in their original file system and NOT import them into iPhoto's file system.
I was really excited about this because I HATE how iPhoto organizes photos...I can never find one if I look for it in Finder.
So I unchecked the button under Advance so that I could keep my own file system/organization.
I cleared out all the photos from iPhoto and deleted all files in the iPhoto Library folder.
I have several folders, about 15, which have names such as "My Birthday" or "Sister's Birthday" and corresponding pictures in the folders. These folders are inside one folder on my Desktop.
I thought that if I simply dragged that single folder into the iPhoto window it would import all the folders, BUT KEEP THEM THERE. I thought that it would use that folder as reference.
But this did not happen. It still copied all the photos into iPhoto's goofy file system/organization.
Please tell me there is a way to do what I want and that I'm not misunderstanding this feature.

Thanks that cleared a few things up.
I imported that single folder off the desktop into iPhoto. Now if I go into my iPhoto library and into Originals I'm presented with the year and if I go into a specific year then I can find all my files easily...in my own file organization.
The year thing is no big deal, even though one year says 1969. I can deal with it.
However, each individual picture files is now an alias.
The whole reason I wanted to do this from the beginning was to:
    1) Get MY photos in MY own organization.
    2) Save disk space
You see, because I don't like iPhoto's organization at all I've been keeping two different "libraries".
I have the folder on my desktop with ALL the pictures in MY own organization.
Then in iPhoto I have ALL the same photos, but in iPhoto's organization. I don't use iPhoto for editing at all so I never get confused about whether iPhoto or my desktop folder has the newest version.
    So a quick run through:
I'll have taken picture with my digital camera. I pop the card into the reader and copy the files into the desktop folder and name/organize them etc. Then I will copy that folder into iPhoto.
The resultant is I have my own "library" on my desktop to quickly access photos and then I have the same exact photos in iPhoto, but where I can easily mail them and show them off.
Do you understand how I have this set up...? I know it's a little confusing.
As you can see have these two libraries double disk space. So I want to only have the iPhoto library, but in my OWN file organization so that I can find it easily.
Now back to the alias thing...
It seems if I delete the folder off the desktop then the alias will be looking at nothing and then I won't have any photos. yikes!
    Hopefully you followed this.
All I want it to be able to use iPhoto, but have its library so that I can organize it.
Thanks again. Major points for you if you can help me some more.

  • File system problems

    Hallo everybody
My device works already with KitKat.
Now I have problems with the file system.
If I add a folder with the File Commander in e.g. Internal storage/Music, I can’t see the folder on the PC connected with USB. Neither “refreshing” nor disconnecting/connecting helps.
A folder created with the PC can be seen with the File Commander.
    Can anybody help?

    Hi,
Try to copy content to the folder you have created in the file manager and see if it appears when you connect the phone to the PC.
Which operating system do you have on your PC?

  • Reloading iphoto library and streamlining iphoto file system.

I had a hard-disk failure recently, and lost a lot of photos: basically all the full size files. Only the thumbnails remained on the system disk, so when I had the new drive installed, the engineer made these the iphoto library.
Fortunately, I had most of my photos backed up on a separate harddrive (in the 'originals' folder). What is the best way of putting these into my iphoto library in place of the thumbnails already there? (ie, don't want to see both in iphoto).
I'd put the iPhoto library on the separate hard-disk, but unbeknownst to me, about a year ago, iPhoto began saving imports on the system drive again, so these were the pictures I lost.
On another point, since I installed iphoto 6, the location of photos has become confusing, with the whole photo library pre-iphoto 6 duplicated in a folders called 'Originals' and 'Data'. Neither of these maintain the original easily navigable and logical date hierarchy file structure, but have saved all photos in a folder marked 2007, by roll number. The date folders which remain only contain a 'data' folder containing .attr files. Not very practical.
In short the whole thing is a mess: for some photos the system has saved 5 copies in various places.
Is there anything that can be done to consolidate the iPhoto library and put it back on a date-based filing system?

    raggabishp
    To start at the end:
Is there anything that can be done ... put it back on a date-based filing system?
No, once you use iPhoto 6, that's the file system. But it's not that difficult to follow: A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Finding the Picture file is easy: There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
So the structure is different, but - especially if you use the Film Rolls view - very straightforward.
There is no easy way to rid yourself of these 'thumbs become originals'. If the thumbs have the same filenames as the Originals, then you could overwrite the thumbs with the Originals, but you would need to do that on a file by file basis, I'm afraid.
Other than that, compare the full size pics with the thumbs and trash the duplicates is all I can suggest.

    TD

  • Yosemite will not install and won't let me change startup disk, it's saying there is a file system problem but disk utilities can't fix it.

I Downloaded the Yosemite upgrade and went to install it on my iMac. The install failed saying file System needed repair. Ran disk utility could do the verify but the repair button was grayed out. When I tried to change startup disk back it wouldn't let me , saying it couldn't gather enough file info. So I'm stuck and can't boot my Mac. How do I get out of this?

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Try to reboot normally.

  • File Systems Problem!

    Hi everyone!
I've got a nice USB external hard-drive which I'd like to use to back up both my Windows PC and my Macbook. My Windows PC will back up fine with some free software I found on the web, but I would like to use Time Machine to back up my Mac.
I have thought of partitioning my external hard-drive: one partition in NTFS for Windows and one partition in a file-system readable by my Mac.
Therefore, I have a question: are there any file systems that both OS X and Windows can read to, that support hard drives of 160gb+?
Many thanks for your help in advance
    A

For Time Machine to work properly (or at all, really), you need to use the HFS+ (Apple) filesystem. HFS+ is the only filesystem which will support the Apple metadata and other special "junk" that required to properly preserve your files. Time Machine relies heavily on this.
Windows can't normally read or write HFS+ filesystems. However, there is a commercial program that is reportedly able to do this:
    http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
(I am not affiliated with them in any way.) Depending on what you use for backup in Windows, this may just do the trick.
Personally, I have an external HFS+ USB drive dedicated to Apple backups (we have a few in the house), and another FAT32 one dedicated to Windows/Linux backups.

  • Problem with DMGs and error: "No Mountable File Systems"

Problem with DMGs and error: "No Mountable File Systems"
The files are not corrupt. The problem is occurring with all DMGs that are apparently formatted in MS-DOS FAT16. No the file will not mount with Disk utility or any other disk mounter programs I have found.
This is now the second time this occurred and now effects my MBP and my iMac. First time i spent days with Apple support and the only solution was ultimately back up the data, reformat the HD, start over from scratch and reload everything. That lasted about a month before the problem resurfaced and is now an issue on both iMac and MBP.
I tried to identify all the programs I installed immediately before the error, as I am convinced it is the result of a software conflict.
    Recent programs includes:
    1) upgrading from Parallels 5.5 to 6.0 on both machines.
    2) using an HP secure II usb drive and setting up a secure disk.
    3) installing new itunes 10
    4) new update to Flip For Mac.
The files affected are downloaded dmgs, including personal brain and google earth, both which are formatted in FAT16.
Any help or thoughts? Apple has now spent hours trying and they say i now have to reformat and wipe and start over. That is unacceptable and based on pasted experience the problem is likely to repeat itself. having to wipe and rebuild a HD ever month is not an solution. i need to fid the root problem.
In the meantime, anyone got a real solution on how to extract the data for a DMG using a different method?

Where you able to find the solution, i am having the same problem, all was fine till i install some programs only same one i saw did we both did was flip4mac i uninstalled it but the problem is still there, i also restored and erased the hardrive but im not up to doing that all over again. If you found anything out let me know i would greatly appreciate it

  • Problem with the EFI system partition's file system.

I installed latest yosemite 10.10.2 update - did a verify disk on “WDC WD1001FALS-403AA0 Media” (internal HD on my iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and got
Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting
Error: The partition map needs to be repaired because there’s a problem with the EFI system partition’s file system.
However a verify disk on the volume partition gets a clean bill of health!
I haven't done a 'repair disk' yet. Thought I'd check if anybody else has same message first.
    Cheers

I had issues where my MacPro 8-core would not boot after the 10.7.4 upgrade, but my MacBook Air 13" 2011 upgrade worked just fine.
I had to restore my MacPro HD from my TimeMachine back up. Apparently, the Softraid raid drivers that I use on my MacPro are not compatible yet with 10.7.4. See here for more info:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2012/20120511_1-MacOSX-SoftRAID.html
I contacted Softraid and they are already aware of the issues and are working with Apple for a fix.

  • MacBookPro SSD Error- ALERT: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system.

MacBook Pro OS x Mavericks. I have Sandisk 256GB SSD and I am getting a below error message.
ALERT: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system.
Does anyone know how to resolve this error and fix it ? unfortunately I don't have a Time Machine backup. Thanks!

Have you tried to run the verify/repair permissions and verify/repair disk through the recovery disk? If that didn't work then I would reinstall the OS after backing up. If that still doesn't work I would take it in.

    Regards,
    R. Rajesh Kannan.

I don't know if the root partition filling up was sudden, and thus due to the killing of an in-use file, or some other problem. However, I have noticed that VAST amounts of space is used up just through the normal patching process.
After I installed Sol 10 11/06, my 12GB root partition was 48% full. Now, about 2 months later, after applying available patches, it is 53% full. That is about 600 MB being taken up by the superseded versions of the installed patches. This is ridiculous. I have patched using Sun Update Manager, which by default does not use the patchadd -d option that would not back up old patch versions, so the superseded patches are building up in /var, wasting massive amounts of space.
Are Solaris users just supposed to put up with this, or is there some other way we should manage patches? It is time consuming and dangerous to manually clean up the old patch versions by using patchrm to delete all versions of a patch and then using patchadd to re-install only the latest revision.
    Thank you.

  • Iphoto file name / title problem

Trying to figure out why titles are not consistent. Some batches show the .JPG or .CRW extension in the title and some batches do not. What is the cause, and is there a way to force the extension to either display or not for all photos in the library.
Also, unrelated, I realized that at some point my file numbers got screwed up. Specifically, after the import that ended with MG0718, the next import started with file MG7054. Some 1000 photos later I noticed. I'd like to be able to renumber these. And if I can , I'd then like to get (trick) my camera into saving new photos, starting with maybe MG2000.
    IPHOTO 6.0.6
    Thanks for any help.
    Ron

    rtpeters:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First, you've posted in the iPhoto 08 forum and may not get the responses you'd would in the iPhoto 6 forum.
As far as numbering is concerned that's a camera issue an I don't know of any way to set a start point in any camera. FWIW here's how I handle file naming:
1 - I upload to a folder on the desktop.
2 - date and name the folder: 03/08/08-Temecula Rod Show. This will give me an event with the same title when imported.
3 - I use R-Name to batch rename the files with the date taken and a brief description: 2008-03-08-TemRodShow-01.jpg.
    4 - import the folder.
That avoids problems down the line with duplicate file names during exporting. It also gives me excellent chronological sorting and searching.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported.

Have Yosemite installed on both my MBA and Mac Pro. iPhoto 9.0 running well on the MBA but when I tried opening iPhoto on my Mac pro get the message "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported." This is after I upgraded iPhoto.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While holding down the command & option keys boot into iPhoto and have it repair the Library.  If that does not work then download "Library Manager" and have that program work.  I found that better than the Apple program.

  • Windows 7 problem with EFS (Encrypting file system)

    Hello colleagues!
I think this topic is related more to the security.
The problem is a bit unusual and google doesn't give me a clear answers, but maybe anyone came across
    with similar problem...
In general, I suspect that my problem is EFS (Encrypting file system), ie
service that automatically encrypts files using a digital signature (certificate).
    A little background:
    - On the work PC it was necessary to reinstall
the system, according to corporate rules all the content we have is encrypted using EFS (Encrypted files are highlighted with green color as you know).
I have copied all the data on a portable drive and also copied the certificates (certmgr.msc).
The system was reinstalled. The only change - it was x32 and became x64.
    - It was necessary to free up some space on the hard drive (the file
system on it is NTFS), so,  I temporary copied all the files on my home PC. My work certificate was installed on it too, because
    I work from home
    sometimes.
When the  work PC was repaired, I've moved all the files back in
the same way (ie on the portable HDD, then to the work PC).
All files were working, but when I needed MS Word documents, it became clear that something was wrong.
When I've opened the document, it gaveme a window with weird symbols and prompts me to select the encoding ... of course -
    no encoding was fit.
Started to explore all the documents, it appears that some part of them were working,
someof them not - all the old documents were working, ie the ones, which
were created before deploying EFS (newly created or copied files immediately encrypted).
So, now I am sure that the
documents were somehow re-encrypted, at least on a portable hard drive, they do not look as encrypted (not highlighted in green), but it's still not open.
Completely stopped opening all the documents that have
been encrypted (for all types of files, ie it is not just an MS Word, but also pdf, presentations, charts, and even the pictures).
    Tell me, who faced similar?
How can it all back? I have no possibility to restore those documents from another sources.

Try copy those corrupted files and make sure you are using the same certificate and then re-encrypt the copied files and try decrypt them.
If possible, use the same account as you used for encryption.
