  • Batches of pictures disappearing- from iPhoto folder as well as the viewer!

I've got a real ghost in the machine... twice in the last week, i have had a whole series of images completely disappear not just from the iPhoto library/viewer, but from the folders in iPhoto's home folder (both "originals" and "modified"). They are NOT in the Trash... there are still photos in iPhoto's trash that were there before, it hasn't been emptied.
Each time, about 60 photos, all in sequence, simply vanished. The first time, i still had the images on the cam card so i just re-uploaded them. But this time, i'd deleted the images from the cam... and was in between backups, so they are just gone.
in the iPhoto home folder, there are gaps in the numbering of the "rolls".. it will go from Roll 437 to Roll 439, with no 438, for example. Is that normal?.
the iMac has been having crashes where it wakes from sleep with most of the screen black, just fragmented video across the top, and frozen/SBOD. Usually the only way out is to shut it down with the power button and reboot (sometimes, i can get away with unplugging the Intuous tablet or other periphs and waking it up again).
Could this have something to do with disappearing images (and god knows what else is missing)? when i look in the iMac's trash, it has several Recovered Files folders from crashes. In each, there is a folder called iPhoto, but it is empty.
ps, i just counted the gap in the picture numbering sequence, and i am missing over 150 pictures, all in sequence and probably from one upload... except that ONE of the images, from the middle of the sequence, is still there...!
    (This is so strange!).
the other set of lost pictures was also from a single upload i think.

I have been having the same issue I think. My Halloween roll disappeared sometime after I had uploaded most of it to MobileMe. 3/4 of my web galleries show gray outlines and run times (for movies), but no picture of movie. Sometimes it's the whole gallery, sometimes just a series of 4-10 shots.
Tried 'show in finder' and it went to empty dated folders. This is happening on both my iMac and MBP.
I can't say exactly how many photos have vanished from my iPhoto library, but I believe it's around 50-100. I have started to save the photos on my backup drive before importing in iPhoto, but i'd rather find a solution to get these photo-stealing poltergeists out of my machines.
    Any ideas?

  • I try to print a thumbnail from within iPhoto and it keeps telling me I don't have any themes installed. When I look in iPhoto folder the themes folder is there. Themes are in app. Support also. I rebuilt iPhoto database and rebooted but no cure. DICKSTER

Try to print from within iPhoto a thumbnail & I get message that there are no themes installed. They are in iPhoto folder and a folder of themes is in the library/ application support. I rebuilt iPhoto data base using iPhoto rebuild. No change, also rebooted hd.
Can someone straighten me out here?
    Thanks

    Restoring iPhoto 9 (11) Themes
First look in your HD/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder. If there is one there move it to the Trash. Also look in your Home/Library/Application Support/iPhoto folder for a Themes folder.  If there is one move it to the Trash.  Reinstall iPhoto as described below:
1 - delete the current application.
2 -files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
3 - mount the disk that iPhoto 11 came on, either an iLife 11 disc or the system disk that came with your computer and do a custom install selecting only iPhoto.
If iPhoto 11 came with the computer then double click on the "Install Bundled Software Only" file and do a custom install.
Apply all of the latest iPhoto 9 (11) updates followed by a repair of disk permissions with Disk Utility. Also make sure you're running the latest Quicktime version.

  • Only an exclamation point shows up when I click a thumbnail in my iphoto folder. Is there any way to recover these photos by using the thumbnails?

Only an exclamation point shows up when I click a thumbnail in my iphoto folder. Is there any way to recover these photos by using the thumbnails? Please help. Thanks!

That exclamation mark is displayed when iPhoto cannot link to the original file.  First make sure you are running a "managed" library by checking iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to make sure the checkbox to copy files into the library during import is checked.
If it is checked you can try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto folder (saved on external drive) greyed out

Help!  I have recently purchased a WD My Book external (cloud) drive.  About a month ago, I moved my iPhoto library there, and everything was working perfectly.  I've just tried to open iPhoto, and it's not automatically loading that library.  When I try to navigate to the external drive to select it, the iPhoto folder is there, but it's greyed out...and it won't let me select it.  (I have the WD2go app on my phone, and can see that my photos are still there...phew!)  I have restarted both the external drive and my laptop.
I'm still a relatively new Mac user...and am very new to the world of external hard drives/networks/clouds, etc.
Any help would be really appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

iPhoto keeps it's iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder, it's really not designed to be moved.
So what happens is iPhoto opens up and it's program looks for it in the Pictures folder and it's not there. It likely created a new one in the Pictures folder with nothing in it.
I don't know how to tell iPhoto to look on the external drive, change to that  location,
But I can tell you the iPhoto Library (on the external drive too) is actually a folder, right click on it (or control click) and a menu pops up with "open package contents" and inside is a folder called Originals with all your pictures inside.
Post your question in the iPhoto forum and they likely have a few cool tricks up their sleeve.

  • PSE 7 Sort order in file folder view

In Thumbnail view I can order the photos by oldest first or newest first. When I change my display option to folder view the photos do not display in any order. Not the order taken (oldest to newest) or (newest to oldest) or by filename. I am unable to determine the logic that is applied in folder view. Further, I can not locate a sort tool either in folder view. I am running Vista, and am new to PSE. I have been running Macintosh with iPhoto, so this is my mindset. Any migration advice from iPhoto Mac to Vista PSE7 would also be of interest.

    Ernst,
The PSE Organizer is designed for organizing photos by date/time and keyword tags, not folders and filenames. So most people find that once their photos have the right date/time, they can profitably ignore folders and filenames. A couple of suggestions for getting all your photos to have the right date/time:
    1. Adjust the date/time of each folder of images as described in the previous message, so they all have the correct date/time. That may be a little tedious, but if you have 20 different such folders, youll be done soon enough. Then in the Organizers Thumbnail view, all the photos will be arranged by date/time.
    2. Create a new album in the Organize pane. Then put each folder of images with wrong date/times into the album. Then click on the album name in the Organize pane to show just those images. Now you can freely rearrange their order within the album. Once theyre ordered correctly, you can select all of them and use Edit > Adjust Date And Time to shift them to the correct starting time(s).

  • Cleaning and organizing iphoto folder in HD

    hi,
I was wondering if there is something I can do (or delete without eliminaing important or required files) to clean up and reduce unnecessary usage of my HD capacity.
Currently in my iphoto folder is the following:
    albumdata.xml
    Data (folder)
    dir.data
    iphoto.ipspot
    iphotolock.data
    library.data
    library.iphoto
    library6.iphoto
    modified (folder)
    originals (folder)
    Thumb32Segment.data
    Thumb64Segment.data
    ThumbJPGSegment.data
any information would be of great assistance. Perhaps there are hidden files that I can delete that are stored in other parts of my computer ie. if it is deleted is the deleted file still stored somewhere else ?
thank you in advance for any advice

iPhoto is a database application (not a file browser) with limited version control. It's fundamental philosophy is to always keep your original, imported file in its original condition. If you edit a file, it always changes a copy of your photo. Each of the 3 folders contains a different, yet necessary, version of your photos.
Originals: holds your full-sized, original imported files. These are kept safe and remain unchanged, no matter what you do. This gives you the option to "Revert to Original" if you wish to discard your edits. Movie clips you import into iPhoto are stored here, too.
Modified: holds any edited version of your files, including photos rotated by a digicam's auto rotate feature. Also in this folder is a jpeg image matching the first frame of any movie clip in your iPhoto library. This jpeg allows the film clip to be represented when you view your library. If you shoot in camera RAW, the RAW file goes into Originals and a jpeg is created in the Modified folder.
Data: holds the thumbnail version of every file in your library. These are necessary for displaying your photos quickly. You see the thumbnails until you move the size slider up to a certain point, when iPhoto grabs the full-size version for you. The thumbnail always reflects the most current version of the photo, whether it resides inside the Originals folder or in the Modified folder.
DO NOT try to "clean up" your iPhoto Library folder from within the Finder. This is a recipe for disaster. Any changes you make will cause the link between your file and the iPhoto database to be lost. At worst, you can corrupt the database and have to start over with a fresh library (and re-import all your photos).
Anything you need to do to organize your photos can and should be done from within iPhoto itself. You can even set it up to allow you to edit in another application, like Photoshop Elements. If hard drive space is an issue, then you can move the entire library folder to an external hard drive and use it from there. The only catch is that the drive must be mounted to use iPhoto. It's very easy to do, so post back if you'd like instructions.
The one file you've listed that might be unnecessary is the library.data file. That one is left over from your previous version of iPhoto, and is not used by version 6. Look at it's Last Modified date. If it's old you can pull it out to your desktop. Launch iPhoto and test it. If all is well you can delete that one file.

  • What is this Import folder inside my iphoto folder?

    Hi,
I was looking at the size of my iphoto 6 folder before backup, and found a folder I havn't seen before.
There's an Import folder inside my iphoto folder. Inside this import folder I have a Data, Original and Modified folder. All of them with empty subfolders except the data one, which has one year (2004) and inside all 2004 thumbnails. (iphoto/import/data/2004/**)
This thumbanils are duplicated in my iphoto/data/2004 folder.
Does anyone know why iphoto created this folder and why? And if it can be removed?
I tried renaming it and restarting iphoto and nothing bad happened... :o) (But i want to be sure before I backup)

I don't know if this will be much help to you, but this is what I've discovered so far. I wish someone from Apple would explain all this to us.
The Original folder contains the the image files imported into you Library.
If your Advanced preferences were set to Copy Files .. when Adding To Library the copy goes here and is never modified by iPhoto.
Any edits to the image result in another copy of the file, with those edits, in the Modified folder.
And I suspect the Data folder contains your original images in thumbnail size for faster viewing in the main iPhoto window.
What I don't understand is why does my original image of 3KB (90x110) become a file of 39KB in the Data folder. What kind of thumbnail is that ?
Can someone from Apple explain this.
I'm trying to make efficient use of disk space and did not select the Advanced preferences setting of Copy Files .. when Adding To Library, so when I saw this file and its size compared to my original I was surprised.

  • Too many files in iPhoto folder?

Here's a problem - iPhoto 6 reports my library to contain 2987 photos. Yet, issuing
    find . -type f | wc -l
    in the
    ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals
directory yields 4953, so it looks like I have 2000 pictures in the iPhoto folder that don't show up in the iPhoto. Anyone has any idea how could I figure out which ones are missing? And yes, I've emptied the iPhoto trash alrady.

The Rolls View (View -> Film Rolls) corresponds exactly with the Rolls in the iPhoto Library Folder / Originals folder.
Switch to Rolls view and examine the Rolls against the listing in the Finder.

  • Where is my iphoto folder in 08

I have upgraded to ilife 08 and OSX 10.5
When I was with Ilife 05 with OSX 10.4 I used to find an iphoto folder that contained all of my library pictures in separate dated folders.
Now I can't seem to find that folder. I just see a file called iphoto library.
Has it moved?, am I going crazy? or does iphoto now have some sort of new storage method?
    Thanks,
    Steve

With iPhoto 08 the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package folder. If you want toa ccess your pics:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 cannot locate photos I imported...but the size of my iPhoto folder has definitely increased after importing - help!

I imported over 40GB of photos into iPhoto but now when I go to view there is a thumbnail but I receive an Alert message about not finding the original after I click on it.
The iPhoto folder definitely increased in size after the importing. I'm running iPhoto 9.5.1.
    Thanks!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Thmbnails in folder view

Is there a way to view pic thumbnails when you have them stored in a folder. The perfect example is when you insert a CD or transfer a bunch of picture to your desktop. Is there a way (outside of iphoto) to view in thumbnail view. This is a standard feature on Windows OS (under the view pull tab you will find a thumbnail option)
    Your thoughts?

Besides GraphicConverter there are a number of image browsers you can use. Just do a search at VersionTracker.com for "image browser" for a number of candidates.
    Do you Twango?

  • How do I get Lion  to preserve the folder view I select?

I like to have different folders set up different ways. Some I always want arranged by name in icon view. Some I want arranged by date created or date modified. Others I want to see a list view. In Snow Leopard I could set the view once and then each time I opened the folder again I got the same view. With Lion I seem to get a random arrangement each time I close and re-open a folder. It is really infuriating. Is ther any way to get the folder view settings to stick?

If you're transferring to another library, why are you exporting to the Finder (which is what Desktop, thumbdrive and DropBox are). This doesn’t understand manual sorting from iPhoto.
Here's one (of several) way(s) to do what you want:
Make an Album of the photos, then drag the pics into your preferred order.
Then Photos Menu: Batch Change -> Set Title to Text "John's Birthday", for instance, and tick the box to append a number to each Photo. Now your photos are titled 'John's Birthday 001, John's Birthday 002 ... etc'
Then File -> Export and in the Export dialogue set the Filename to "Use Title"
Sort on Filename in the FInder and you end up with a folder full of images in the same order as the Album in iPhoto.

  • Link to A folder View in a PDF Portfolio - feature no longer working - please advise

Hi, I am no longer able to link to a Folder View of a PDF Portfolio:
Within a PDF portfolio i need to link from a PDF to a folder view in the Portfolio. I am using Link Action - Go to Page View.
This used to work for me - very important feature that no longer works. Please advise a workaround.
    Steps:
    1. Start a PDF Portfolio that contains files and folders
    2. Open a PDF in the Portfolio
    3. in the opened PDF click Add or Edit Link
    4. Define a link area and set it to Go To A Page Vies
    5. In the past i have been able to target a Folder View in the Portfolio - ie. direct a user not to a file, but instead to a folder view that contains relevant files. I would do this by setting the Target Page View to my desired folder view
    6. This used to work in bringing a user to the folder view i specify. Now it does nothing. If i go back to the PDF and EDIT the Link i see this. File: Parent Document Page 1. This in fact does nothing.
Please advise, am i doing this wrong, it used to work. I have tried several workarounds, with no luck.
    thanks!

There's an extension or two, or a combination of extensions which seem to be causing that in Firefox 6.0.2. One that has been mentioned is TabMix Plus.
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You need to figure out what is causing it, and disable that extension/s until they are fixed by their developer.

  • PI 7.11 sp6 Integration Builder - folder view error

    Experts,
We recently installed SAP NW PI 7.11 (ehp1) up to sp6.  This is a new install.  We did all the wizards, etc and things are basically ok.
we execute SXMB_IFR, then go to "integration builder" link and login.
If I change the view from "object view" (icon of 2 people) to "folder view" (icon of folder), we get the following error:

I found this note, but it does not quite describe my problem:
