IPhoto for usb movie catalogue

Hi all,
I would like to use iPhoto for building a very simple portable movie catalogue on USB drive. By portable I mean unplug usb and replug the drive on other mac with iPhoto 09.
I don't know much about iPhoto, I have just two years experience as a mac user. These are the questions:
1)
I have movies and programs recorded from TV (.mpg or xvid), and I want to put few keywords on it for search purpose or, if not possible, create album based for example on subject (sci-fi, thriller, actor, ecc...).
Do you think this can be achieved with iPhoto ?
2)
Is iPhoto accepting all known common formats, mpg, avi, xvid, flv...or is going to convert to a proprietary format ? Or for example to .mov format ?
3)
The current folder holding the hierarchy of movie, is about 500Gb, based on this, how much space iPhoto would take to create its own library.
4)
Is it possible to create album and sub-album, or event and subevent, for example sci-fi and inside another album called 70 (holding all movie of 1970).
Don't want to go off-topic, if iPhoto is not suited for this, could you suggest an alternative ?
thanks

iPhoto works with some (not all) video formats produced by still cameras. This is not an intended use for iphoto. It won't import many of the files you mention.

It should be in the Users/ Shared folder.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Note the option to check and repair Library Permissions

  • How do I move photos in iphoto for ipad from album to album ?

how do i move photos in iPhoto for iPad from album to album ?

If you want to move a photo, then you need to use a PC or a Mac. In iPad, you can copy, but this is just a link to the original. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while...but it looks like it needs another photo program to do it.

    Hi
Did You ever use - iPhoto ?
Did You may be direct iPhoto to a different Photo Library
As iMovie tries to find the appropriate photo library - it can get lost if iPhoto direct it into a Library on a not connected external hard disk or to a strange location - And iMovie HANGS.
Do - When no other program is running that might interfere
    • Start iPhoto - BUT NOW KEEP alt-key (option key) DOWN during the full Start-Up process
    • Now iPhoto let's You select Photo Library
    • Select the one in Your Account / Home folder / Pictures ! !
    • Then iPhoto should start up OK
    • Now Quit iPhoto
    • START iMovie
Does it still hangs - then I would suspect - iMovie Pref. file
If it Run's OK - Then HURRAY !

  • How can i put my pictures from my picture files into my iPhotos for photo streaming onto my apple tv?

Hi, I am a new user to iMac and have now bought just about every Mac product you can think of and have just taken delivery of an Apple TV and now want to stream photos but don't know how to transfer photos from my picture files over into my iPhotos for Photo Streaming. Is there an easy way? I have Mac for Dummies but they don't mention it there!! Guess it's too dummy for them!!! Any one out there can help me as I have loads of pics I would like to see on the big screen from time to time

You need to connect the Apple TV and the computer to the same network and then turn on "Home Sharing" in iTunes. Check boxes allow you to select what you want to share.
You'll see a "Computer" icon on the Apple TV and it holds all your music, movies and photos.

  • In IPhoto I changed movie dates after thumb nails were created in IMovie but the new dates are not showing up in IMovie.  Is there someway to refresh the IPhoto event in IMovie?

Background:  I'm transferring file folders from a Visa laptop via an external hard drive to my IMac.  In the folders are photos and videos from different cameras.  SO I first tried to import to IMovie but it would not recognize any of the files.  So then I imported into IPhoto and both photos and videos were imported and I created events for each folder.  When I first opened IMovie I had to wait for it to create "thumb nails".  Then I could view the events in IMovie BUT the video clips are not together because they have vastly different dates and are mixed with videos from other events.  I looked at the dates and said I can fix that in IPhoto which i did but those new dates are not showing up in IMovie.    I think I need to somehow refresh the event data that Imovie is using but have not found how to do that in either IPhoto or IMovie.
I'm doing this on three events with about 100 photos and videos.  But I have many 1000s more to do so need to know how to either fix this or delete these events, reimport, change the dates, then open again in IMovie.   I'm sure that would work but I can't understand why changing the dates in IPhoto is not being reflected in IMovie.
    Appreciate any tips or pointers.
OBTW this is my first question as a first time Apple owner.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

  • Where can I find out how to use the Journals feature in iPhoto for iPhone

I am new to Apple Support Communities. Not sure if this is the place that will help me work with Journals. Is there a manual or video which helps with teaching the features of the Journals application and how to use them? I am stuck knowing how to move around the images and changing the page set-up, among other perplexing features.

  • IPhoto not showing movies in entirety

Running iPhoto 8.1.2... any movies (taken with various cameras, iPod or iPad) now only show up in Events as being 1 second long... and will only play that long when run.
I've tried importing a new movie, and it stayed and would run in its entirety.
    Any comments or suggestions?

Download and use  Find Any File  to search for your movies by searching for the movie extension, i.e. .mov or whatever it might be.  Find Any File can search areas that Spotligh can't like packages and invisible folders and will display those found in a manner that you can locate them easily. If your movies are on the hard drive but are just hidden FAF will find them:

  • Cannot import or see iphoto slide exported movie in imovie

I made a movie from slides in iphoto. I then decided that a caption might be nice, and went to imovie to add it. iMovie '08 is not able to read the file. It is a .mov, and other movies it reads are .mov, so I cannot fathom why it cannot be read. If I use import, the title is not highlighted - as if it is not a recognized format. QT reads the movie just fine of course. iDVD sees the file just fine too.

I concur, I also exported a slideshow from iphoto and cannot import into iMovie08. Looking at the info for the .mov file its an MPEG-4 file which is supposed to be supported so this is not good. ... unless there is some trick (which we shouldnt have to do of course).

  • Apple TV good option for renting movies?

I'm thinking of getting the Apple TV and one of the things I'd be looking to do on it would be to rent movies.  Is it a good option for renting movies?  If so, is there a huge selection of rentals?  Any help or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

There is plenty to choose from with New Releases and a decent back catalogue. It all depends on what you're looking for. Time it takes to load depends on your network (2.5mbps for SD, 6mbps for instant 720P, 8mbps for 1080P). It will be 'ready to play' once enough has loaded in order to play without interuption.

  • Is iPhoto changing my .mov format after importing from iPad?

Or is iTunes changing it while importing?
It seems iPhoto is making movies incompatible with iPad.
My iPad sees and plays my .mov videos directly taken by my canon sd 1400 is. They play in the photos app of my ipad after using the camera kit, and it's great for sharing with friends during a vacation.
The bad news is after ipad uploads these videos and photos to my mac's iPhoto, iPhoto is changing the format (I am guessing) so that the videos can not be uploaded back to the ipad in an album. Why? How can I change or fix this?
I am hoping someone points me to a magic setting in iPhoto that says, "Check this box if you don't want your videos broken with iPad"

    Apple Camera Kit
    Canon SD1400 IS
    iPhoto 11
    iMac Intel Core Duo
    OSX 10.6.5

The iTunes app on your computer is very strict as to importing videos to the iPad.
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Even if your video does follow the above specs. Not all h.264 are created equally to the h.264 standards.
The Camera Connection Kit is not as strict.
I can import videos from my Flip Mino HD camera when using the Camera Connection Kit. When trying to import the same video using iTunes I get the message,'file format no supported.'
The previous iOS 3.x did not support importing Flip videos when using the Camera Connection Kit. I was happy to find that the iOS 4.2.1 upgrade did!!! Now I don't have to buy a new video camera!!!
To answer you question... Use the Camera Connection Kit. It's better than nothing...

  • Why does the iPhoto slideshow I exported as a movie only last 5 seconds?, How do I save an iPhoto slideshow as movie?

I followed the instructions for exporting an iPhoto slideshow as a Qucktime movie, but when I drag it onto my iWeb page, it only plays for 5 seconds.  What am I doing wrong?

I started having this problem last week. It affects new and old photos. Maybe one in several hundred photos has this problem. Some of them were fine earlier and have been in iPhoto for years.
This seems to be a rendering problem of some sort. When I click on the thumbnail, a fuzzy low-rez image comes up full size, but instead of resolving to full resolution the screen just goes black.
I imported 30 images yesterday. Jpegs created from RAW files by Nikon Capture. All but one are fine. The actual file in the library seems OK (I tried the suggestion above). I can export the photo and it's fine in mail or other viewers. It's just that Iphoto can't seem to display it at full/high resolution. At first I thought that it might be due to the size (12Mpxl) but the other ones are fine, and some of the old images this happens to are small (2mpxl) and taken as jpgs by an old canon point and shoot.
I'm using Iphoto8 7.1.3(364) and the only thing that's changed on my computer recently is adding the latest 10.4.11 java and security updates.
I tried to duplicate the photo, and the problem also occurs with the duplicate. I can't do the revert trick, since I haven't edited the file in any way since import.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm happy to send the affected photo if it helps.
    Thanks.

  • Using iPhoto for presentation

    Hi all,
I want to be able to show photos of art work from my iPhoto in a presentation. People tell me I need to buy Power Point but do I really need to? I want to use my computer to plug into what ever type of projection system is available and manually move from one photo to another. No music, no fancy Ken Burns type effects. I'm not even sure what type of projection connection is standard in the industry. Would I need Power Point to connect to most US University projection systems or can I just sent up a folder in iPhoto and manually move from photo to photo. Just what the ehck will I be plugging into that gets me from my computer to a projection screen in a lecture hall anyway?
    thanks in advance

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No you don't need PowerPoint. My wife teaches at the local college and uses iPhoto as her presentation application.
You'll need to set up an iPhoto album for the presentation. If you have a laptop that includes the apple remote you can use it to advance, pause and go back.
Here's how I have it set up for her:
1 - select the album with your slides and click on the Play button at the bottom.
2 - in the Settings pane put in 600 seconds. This will let you discuss the slide for up to 10 minutes without the slideshow automatically advancing. Uncheck all of the checkboxes (except the "show title" if you want that option). Set your transition to the style and speed that you want.
3 - In the music section uncheck the Play music checkbox.
4 - save the settings via the Save button.
Now you can start the slideshow by selecting the album and Option-click on the Play button. That will bypass the settings window and go directly to the slideshow. With the Apple remote the play button will start the slideshow once the album has been selected.
We found that we had to be connected to the digital projector with it turned on before we booted up the laptop. Then in the Monitors preferences pane select the Arrangements section (it only shows up if you're connected to a second monitor or digital projector) to complete your setup. That may vary depending on the projector but if we were already booted before connecting the laptop the projector would not be recognized.
The first time we got a message window saying the resolution of the screen should be set to 640 x 480. However, later on we used a higher resolution and it worked OK and looked better.
If you don't have an Apple remote then you can use the arrow keys to operate the slideshow.
We use the DVI to VGA adapter that came with the MacBook Pro to connect to the projector. Depending on the age of your iBook you'll have a VGA or mini VGA port. The mini came with iBooks starting in May, 2002. You'll have to determine what type of connection the projector uses. Ours was a VGA. Then you'll need mini-VGA to VGA adaptor if yours is a later iBook.
We do have PowerPoint and use it to make the slides but export them to iPhoto for the lectures. So if you have your slides/photos and don't need to have any text with them, just put them in an album and off you go. You can always make title slides with a text editor, do a Print to PDF/Send PDF to iPhoto to get the slide into iPhoto as a jpg file.
I definitely would do a trial run before the lecture to make sure you have the correct connectors, etc. My wife's first night in class was somewhat of a disaster even though we went in a couple of days before and ran it. Some equipment had changed and she's not very technically adept.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to show iMovies in iPhoto (for iTunes to access for AppleTv and mobile)

I have read a few posts on this but cannot find a definitive answer...
If you import movies into iPhoto, iMovies can access them. But if you import into iMovies, it seems iPhoto cannot access them, which means iTunes cannot access them to stream to AppleTV or sync with my iPhone and iPad, as iTunes does not see iMovies.
Because I have a DV Camcorder I have to import my home movies to iMovie which gives me this above problem in that I cannot see them in iPhoto/iTunes/AppleTv.
So am I right in thinking the best way to have all applications see my movies is to export them from iMovie into iPhoto as follows:-
    1) Rip to iMovies from the Camcorder
    2) Find the files in Finder
    3) Import into iPhoto
    4) Delete the originals from iMovie
Then I should be able to see the newly imported files in iPhoto in iMovie AND iTunes??
I cant find or think of an alternate solution.
    Thanks

I've decided to give the following a go...
Basically I originally wanted to use iPhoto for movies and photos so I have them all in one place and because I think Albums, Smartfolders etc. are great. Movies go hand in had with photos of the same event. But I also wanted them in iTunes to sync. with iPad, iPhone and play via Apple TV.
The file sizes from camcorder videos got me thinking I don't really want the massive files in iPhoto/iTunes/AppleTV etc. So have now decided to use iMovie as the library for the original large files, from which I can edit and make some compilations etc. then export those new movies of lower filesize (mp4?) into iPhoto for use with iTunes, Apple TV, iPhone and iPad.
I decided that when I finish importing I may look at putting the iMovie library with original DVs onto an external drive (due to filesize, if this is possible). So when I want to use iMovie to import and edit and make movies I will plug in the external hard drive where they all are, do my stuff, then can unplug and put away. That way I do not need to delete the originals due to filesize (I did not want to have to re-import from the camcorder again in future so do want them stored somewhere).
It also means I dont have every single video I shot in iPhoto, iTunes etc., not all of them are good.
Then my main computer with the iPhoto library has all my created and edited and new format movies to store for use with iTunes, Apple TV etc.
So I think this sounds like a good plan for me.
iMovie -> Original movie library manager (external drive due to filesize)
iPhoto -> Photos and edited movies library manager (Mac drive for AirPlay and mobile sync)
