Iphoto force quit, lost images
was using iphoto and it was acting as if I clicked on and off repeatedly the photo I was editing. So I tried to force quit it and the force quit did the same on and off movements, when I restarted (just pushing the power button) all photos and files are gone.I was on the guest account and now it's back to blank, all files etc are no longer on the desktop. Please help, the pictures I just lost were deleted when uploaded!
What version of iPhoto do you have?

IPhoto- force quit, lost photos
Yesterday I was uploading pictures from a recent trip off my Nikon D60 into my iPhoto library. The upload was almost finished and it asked me if I wanted to "keep originals" or "delete originals." I pressed "delete originals" as I always do to get the pictures off my camera and free up space. It's almost done deleting and finishing up the upload, but then my iPhoto freezes and stops responding, so I'm forced to force quit. I re-open my iPhoto and none of the pictures had uploaded. I check my camera and 4/5ths of my photos are gone. I uploaded the pictures I had left into my iPhoto and it worked.
But is there any way to get back the lost photos? Please help!Anna
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
It is strongly recommended that you never have iPhoto (or any other computer program) delete your photos for exactly the reason you are posting about - software or hardware failures can lose photos
A much better practice is to upload the photos the camera to iphoto and unmount the camera - verify that the photos are safe and sound in iPhoto and then use your Camera's format command to reformat the card thereby renewing the care format and erasing the photos
An even better practice is to use a USB card reader to upload your photos instead of the camera - it is safer and usually faster
Media Recover - http://www.mediarecover.com/ - probably can recover your photos - download it and run the trial version to see what you can recover - to actually recover the photos you must purchase the software

Image import + iPhoto freeze + Force Quit = Deleted images
My wife imported photos from our samsung nv10. The import went well. She then began editing the images (probably rotating them to be upright, redeye, etc.) when suddenly iPhoto completely froze up. She let the SWOD (spinning wheel of death) spin for 10 minutes and decided to Force Quit iPhoto. When she booted up iPhoto all the pictures that she had imported were no longer in the iPhoto library and having selected the 'Delete Images After Import' option they no longer exist on the camera either.
Fortunately these were not once in a lifetime images, but nevertheless, it would be great if anyone knew what happened to the photos.Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Also check to see how much free space you have on the Powerbook. If TD's suggestions don't help low free space may be a factor. Report back with the amount.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
PS CS3 force quit, lost all preferences and actions
I had PS open but no images open, surfing in Safari (downloading some files). Spinning ball of death, so I leave it for a couple of mins. Keeps spinning. Leave it 5 mins. Walk away to have a break and let it sort itself out. Half an hour later, still the spinning ball. Force quit (from dock). Nothing. Cmd/Option/esc to force quit. Nothing. PS is listed in the Force Quit dialogue. Go to PS and spinning ball is there as well..... very strange (Finder is not listed in Force Quit dialogue menu). Try to force quit a few more times. Nothing. So I hold the power button till OSX starts up again and of course, now all my Preferences, Actions etc have gone.
Can anyone help explain what happened?
When I couldn't force quit, anything else I should have done?
I do have my system disc backed up, so is there a simple way to "reset" PS from my backup?
Many thanks for any help!Stupid question time.......
If I've made an Action, it's not "saved" anywhere until I go to the drop-down menu and physically save it to a location on my HD? Even though that Action is there every time I shut down and re-open PS?
Bugger.......
It looked like the only files to move over (I dragged and dropped the files from my back-up to my working HD) were the preferences file in the Settings folder and the .plist file. That's taken care of anyway.
Thanks! -
Address Book - "Forced Quit" lost all data
I had a significant problem with Address Book (4.0.6) and its back-up. I am running 10.4.11 on a Power Mac (Dual 450 MHz PowerPC G4).
While in Address Book, it did not respond so I did a Force Quit. Upon reopening Address Book, all of my data (over 1000 items) was gone and only two addresses existed. In checking my account>Library>Application Support>Address Book, all that existed in the main address was 16 KB. A version of the Address Book from 2005 existed but not the current one.
In checking my back-up drive (backed up once a day), backed up by Retrospect (Destination = Replaced Corresponding Files, Selecting = Users Folders and Prefs (OS X), the only Address Book file was from 2005, probably when I first used Retrospect. In other words, the daily back-up was not capturing the most recent file.
One, what happened to the Address Book file when I did Forced Quit? Is it still on my hard drive under some other name? If so, how can I find it and can I use it?
FYI, I did run Apple’s Disk Utility and Verified the Hard drive which was OK.Try this:
Quit Address Book.
In folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook drag file AddressBook.data to the desktop. Rename AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data and restart AB. If your contacts are not back quit AB again and repeat the drag/rename process, this time with AddressBook.data.beforesave.
If you get your contacts back, now is probably a good time to use the AB menu item File/Back up Address Book.

iPhoto just froze so I Force Quit the iPhoto app and now I have lost half my (hundreds) of photos. How do I restore them?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Force quite & restart - now lost mail, ICal,Iphoto, bookmarks
Hi,
Hoping someone can help me - an amateur but keen to learn Mac user.
Did a force quite on mail and then shutdown Mac (may have also logged out - not exactly sure though).
Computer powered up and it is as if I am using it for the 1st time - Mail blank(asking for new account info), Ical data gone, Iphoto data gone , firefox bookmarks gone.
After much panic, did a bit of searching and found the following:
1/System log shows that at time of 'force quit/shutdown' >> Setting hostname to 'my-name-computer.local'
2/ Managed to find my files under :Home file/my name/public/library/mail or calanders etc....where as currently it is pulling or storing data from :Home File /my name/library/mail or calanders etc.....
I suspect I have changed some setting and the public file has something to do with it but not sure what or how to fix it so I can restore everything back to normal.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
Thanks
AJThe symptoms you describe to appear to pertain to the original user
account having a significant flaw or corruption; so the result bears
out the idea since you are prompted to enter information as though
you had never used those items before.
Since the issue appears to be a damaged Directory, where the user
account is still there but not being seen correctly due to shutdown or
other corruption errors, one of the tools that may help restore the Mac
could be the use of *Disk Warrior*; it can built a new directory or fix one.
The booted Disk Utility in your OS X install disc won't fix a Directory.
So, that is something worth checking into further: using Disk Warrior.
Outside of that, there are other causes or initial paths to a similar failure
of the directory; some are caused by attempts to 'archive & install' and
not save the user's existing folder info over into the new system. In that
case, the info would be in the 'previous system' but not the new one.
I'm not sure (now) how to 'Recover Your Mac OS X Home Folder' &
or restore it; I've read of some who did that in more than one way, to
include moving the user info bits into another account given Admin
access, then after, delete the defective account entirely. You should
not have to do that level; and it involves more than I dare mention...
because, although I did read about it, I have promptly forgotten!
I'm glad they've named this area "Discussions."
You may have to read up on a few topic areas that probably overlap;
one of them covers the general topic of recovering a (lost?) home folder.
This first one covers several topics and before going into it as though it
were really the correct answer, presume it is not. You are asked to use
the "root" user in do some tasks, straight-on; but later in the article, is
a less invasive thing to check into (read more about, search for, etc) in
the last section: Recover a user’s account or files.
{The main problem may be, that the items you may want to save into a
new replacement Admin user account, could be damaged or really lost.}
• How to Recover Your Mac OS X Home Folder:
http://www.pctipsbox.com/how-to-recover-your-mac-os-x-home-folder/
• Mac OS X: How to recover a home folder (directory)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2258
In the immediate above article, the action to create a new/replacement
user account named the same as the failed one, and a general way to
reclaim the old similar-named user preferences and info, is outlined.
• Recovering Lost Users - Mac OS X Tips
http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/recovering-lost-users.html
This page tells of two main ways the user account appears missing
and some methodology of how to restore some sense of it again.
If you had a pre-problem clone of your entire computer's contents,
the easy answer would be to re-clone the incredible backup to the
Mac after wiping the computer's drive completely. Or try Disk Warrior.
Hopefully some of this makes sense.
Some days, nothing does to me.
Good luck & happy computing!

IPhoto stalls when I try to open a slideshow..can't even force quit
I began creating a slideshow in iphoto yesterday and during editing of a video clip within the slideshow, iphoto completely froze up & I let the color wheel spin for literally hours. I did a force quit and now every time I open iphoto and click on my slideshow title to open it, iphoto goes into stall mode...can't do anything...can't even use the menu to force-quit. Have to right click iphoto icon at bottom and force quit that way. What can I do to either delete the slideshow and start over, or open it to begin with?? I can't even seem to delete it. When I search for the slideshow by name, in finder, etc. it's non existent. I had just begun so I'm not bummed if I lost it or it wasn't saved to begin with, but it's just annoying to have iphoto stall on me over and over. Thanks for any ideas! I'm a new mac user so it's all greek to me!
What is the home page setting?

this is driving me nuts..I don't know how to get it off...I can't use iphoto and I have to do a forced quit of the whole computer just to get it off the scrren. I don't even know what it means.
It means that when you imported this photo you didn't allow iPhoto to copy the image to its Library, but chose to store it somewhere else. Now iPhoto is looking for it. Where is the disk you chose to store it on?

IPhoto 11 has stopped responding. I had been working on a large slideshow for a week now and all was great when the slideshow froze when I tried to add another image. To shut it down I had to force quit. When I have tried to re-open IPhoto starts to launch but the rainbow icon just keeps going round and I have to force quit to get out of the programm. I cannot access any of the files in IPhoto and it wil not open. Any suggestions??? I would really want to save my images in IPhoto if at all possible as I do not have them stored anywher elese. Any help would be very apprreciated.
Remember: you always need a back up for any important data on your computer. Always.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
If that fails
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

IPhoto window blank, force quit, general misery
Hello,
I've never used iPhoto on this machine but have used it briefly on another computer on the network (we have a family license). I had installed iPhoto Buddy on the other computer and decided I would do so on this one so I could share libraries across the network. After installing iPhoto Buddy I launched iPhoto and navigated to a library on the other machine. It took forever for "importing" to complete and when all was done, I couldn't access individual pictures, only Events. At this point I decided to back out of this setup with iPhoto Buddy and leave well enough alone.
I deleted iPhoto and reinstalled it from iLife 09 by following this iPhoto forum advise: "Move the iPhoto application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder to the Trash and reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on."
Then I updated online to latest edition, and ran permissions repair.
At this point iPhoto is not responding properly. I get a blank screen when I launch. If I make some changes in Preferences, my pictures (just a few in number) and the menu will appear in the window. Sometimes I can't quit the application and must Force Quit.
Nothing else seems to be affected by this problem. I would like to wipe out everything associated with this install of iPhoto and hopefully get back to square one.Hi Terence,
I trashed iPhoto Buddy early on (along with related library items).
I located a couple of crash logs, and I'll include the later one at the bottom of this message.
Incidentally, neither of the logs was written at the time I had to force quit. They were written late morning July 30. I force quit later in the afternoon.
Thanks,
Dale

I have recently come back from a trip to Venice, i uploaded my photos to iPhoto to view and edit them, half way through the photos from day three of my trip it has frozen on a particular photo. I force quit the app and then re open it and it is still on the same image with the exact same problem. I am now unable to view any photos of my trip as they're all on iPhoto and i cannot access the albums because they are stuck on this one photo. I need to be able to access them by 11th March because i have a project due in about our trip and we need to include the best of our photos and at the moment i am being stopped from even looking at them. PLEASE HELP!
What version of iPhoto?
Assuming 09 or later:
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

IPhoto 6 freezes up requiring force quit - help!
I loaded all my JPEGs and MPEG4s from my Sony DSCW1 onto 2 DVDS and imported them into iPhoto, creating new albums but keeping the DVDs as the path, ie not copying them to the hard disc. Now iPhoto starts up fine and works for a while but then a message comes up saying 'Cannot find MPEG 065', sometimes it's a different MPEG. It offers a 'cancel' option, but this doesn't work. The spinning wheel then starts and the iPhoto icon in the dock starts bouncing. The only command that then works is Force Quit. I can then restart it and it will work for a while until the same thing repeats. Any ideas?
Macbook 2GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Macbook 2GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8)Art2007:
That't one of the issues with the alias system and video files. You're better off creating a separate library for just the videos so as to not disrupt your primary library. iPhoto doesn't do that with plain image files that are referenced by just alias file.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Missing edited photos from iPhoto after Force Quit
I just lost about 50 photos. I'm using a separate application to edit my photos before transferring them to my iPhoto Library. A couple hours in to editing I received an error message and had to force quit both iPhoto and my other photo editing app. I had been adding each photo I edited to iPhoto as I went along, then deleted the unedited version (emptying my trashcan also). After reopening iPhoto, all the pictures I had edited were gone and the original versions were back in the library.
Any clues as to how this happened and if it's possible to retrieve my edited photos? Why are you deleting the unedited versions?

Facebook albums removed! Have to force quit iPhoto
My wife has a Facebook account and this morning uploaded photos from her camera into iPhoto '11. Then she deleted the ones she did not like and edited those she kept. She then highlighted them all. Clicked Share and Facebook and then iPhoto started popping up messages saying that past Facebook albums have been removed. The only way to stop this was to force quit. She has lost about 15 albums.
I restored my whole system from Time Machine and reverted back to iPhoto '09. The Facebook albums are still lost but the rest of the program seems to be running fine.
Can anyone offer any help or advice? Why is this happening?
Thanks.
ThomI am having the same problems as everyone & am going to do what Thom has done & use Time Machine to restore my Macbook Pro to before I installed iLife 11.
I followed all the advice from the Apple Store about installing ILife 11 - I backed up on Time Machine, Installed iLife 11, then did a software update before opening any iLife programs. I have double checked & find that there are no other updates available.
The problems I am having with iPhoto 11 are:-
1. My Facebook albums are being deleted & the only way to stop this happening is to Force Quit. iPhoto.
2. There is no longer a list of all my Facebook & Mobile me albums in the left hand side folder list, so I am unable to drag more photos into the albums.
3. Some of my mobile me galleries have been changed & photos deleted or in the wrong albums.
4. When emailing photos, there is only the photo templates available to use. Trying to save a photo from the template in the received email is impossible - you only seem to be able to save the whole template. Is there a way of sending multiple photos in a chosen size without the template as in iPhoto 09?
iPhoto 11 is driving me crazy - I daren't even look at iMovie as I dread to think what has happened to that!! I much prefer iPhoto 09!!
Do you think that I can get a refund for iLife 11 if I take it back to the Apple Store?
Off to restore my Macbook & be rid of iLife 11!!

Can firefox show bookmarks list in alphabetical order like Internet Explorer?
I don't want to have to go to "show all bookmarks" then search for a bookmark. I want to just see the list and go down to the right one, or start typing it and go to it.
