IPhoto freezes during upgrade

I upgraded to Yosemite, then had to upgrade my iPhoto from mid 2010. I cannot finish the update, as it freezes, time and time again before finishing. This has been happening for over a week now. I am afraid that I have lost my close to 20,000 pictures. Any suggestions? I have already loaded iPhoto Library Upgrader.
Processor speed: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
4 GB Memory 1333MHz DDR3
Operating System OSX Yosemite 10.10

Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder:
User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.

  • Iphoto freezes during upgrade to iPhoto '08 -- many photos corrupted

When upgrading to iPhoto 8 (using iLife '08 disks), the program froze while photos were in mid-conversion. I am able to access some (those that had finished being converted before the program froze?) but am unable to access most of my photos. In Finder, for the photos that successfully converted, I see a thumbnail image, the photo title, the date taken, the file size and "Jpeg image."
For the photos that I can no longer access, the thumbnail images are all little pages with an arrow pointing to a red "JPG" at the top, the photo title is now IMG_0062.JPG, the date of all the unconverted photos is Dec 18 2005, the files are all 4 KB, and the kind of photo is listed as Alias.
When I try to double click one of the non-converted files, the following error message appears: The alias "IMG_0154,jpg" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." I have the option to: "Delete Alias" "Fix Alias..." or "OK" If I try to "Fix Alias" 4 files appear (T104.ithmb, T155.ithmb, T206.ithmb, T257.ithmb -- They are all 853 KB, were created on the same 1/15/06 but at 4 different times.) Choosing one does not solve the problem.
In the Events section of iPhoto 8, there are empty events in the place of where the converted photos should be (even lists the number of photos, but the 'event' itself is blank).
Can anyone help? These are the only copies of these photos and they're very important.
    Thanks!

Can you se an Folder called Originals inside the iPhoto Library, in your Pictures Folder - if necessary go there and right click on the Library icon and go 'Show Package Contents' on the Library.
This Originals folder should contain your actual photos.
If it does then: To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

When making a photo book, my iPhoto freezes during uploading the book to the storey.  I have attempted this 4 times now and I don't know what to do! I know the file size is massive due quantity of large image files, but I don't want to reduce the image file size and compromise quality in the book. How can I get past this?
    My macbook air is os x 10.9, using iPhoto 11 9.5 (902.7).

Try Old Toad's solution here:   See   Re: iphoto : upload impossible to print a book
Try to boot into Safe Mode and order this way, or sign into a different user account and try to order as a different user.

  • HT1338 My iPhoto keeps freezing during upgrading step 5 of 9.  How do I fix this?

My iPhoto is trying to upgrade but keeps freezing at step 5 of 9.  Is there a fix for this?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again

  • IPhoto Crashes during Upgrade at Thumbnails

I have searched this discussion group and found many suggestions to overcome my problem with iPhoto 5.0.4, but none are working.
I installed iLife '05 yesterday. My entire purpose in purchasing this software was to organize my extensive photo library. When going through the upgrade process, iPhoto crashes while updating Thumbnails.
    I have tried this suggestion:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
See it it will work now. If not, launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the two options regarding thumbnails. This may be the same as what iPhoto was doing on its own but give it a try. if that fails then move the three thumbnail files, Thumb32.data, Thumb64.data and ThumbJPG.data to the Trash and launch iPhoto. They may be damaged and rebuilding this way may get you thru the process.
I have tried the suggestions on these pages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/Personal21.html
    http://homepage.mac.com/loridilo/Personal22.html
NOTHING works. I know my photos are not lost and that they are on my hard drive. However, if I have to recreate the hundreds of folders I'm gonna go postal.

    Kirk:
Do you have a backup copy of your V4 iPhoto Library folder? After installing iLife 05 did you repair disk permissions with Disk Utility?
Here's an easy off the wall fix that worked for another user, it just might work for you.
1 - move your iPhoto Library folder to the desktop.
2 - launch iPhoto and when asked create a new library.
3 - quit iPhoto and move the new library folder to the trash and move the original one back to the Pictures folder.
    4 - launch iPhoto.
Don't ask me why but it worked for another user.
If that doesn't work you can try to rebuild the library (make a temporary backup copy of the library folder first - select it and type Command-D. Then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If that doesn't work there's this option:
1 - move the backup library folder to the desktop and trash the original that didn't rebuild properly.
2 - launch iPhoto and create a new library.
3 - using the File->Add to Library select the duplicate library folder and click the Import button.
This will import the full sized image files that are inside that iPhoto Library folder. Most of the rolls will be intact but with different titles and dates (the current import date). There will be additional rolls for the various original files of those you've edited earlier. You will lose albums, keywords and comments. But that should get you an up and running library.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • IPhoto Freezes When Importing from Camera

Each time I've tried to import from my camera iphoto freezes during the import and I have to force quit it. I have tried copying the photos from the cameras folders to the computer and then importing from there but it also freezes. I did not have any problems importing using iphoto on 10.4 and I have now tried to import onto a friends computer (PC) and it works fine (so not my memory card or camera gone wrong).
Any suggestions on how to import successfully????????

    Nyssa
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • My iphoto froze during download of images, cant close it, what should i do

I am have problem with iphote, tried to download picture from camera, over 1000 picture, didnt know it was that many, anyway, iphoto froze in process, cant shut program down dont know if all images download, cant delete images, help

Force quit iPhoto, if it is still hanging - from the "Force quit" panel in -menu in the upper left corner of your screen.
Then repair your iPhoto library - launch iPhoto while firmly holding down the key combination ⌥⌘, until the First Aid panel pops up. Select "Repair Database" from this panel and press "repair".
If iPhoto launches again after the repair, check, which photos have been imported.
Look, for a "Recovered" item in your library source list. Maybe some stray photos have been put there.
Then try importing again, but this time in smaller installments.
BTW, iPhoto freezing during import can be caused by not enough disk space available. How full is your hard drive?

  • IPhoto frequently freezes during cropping. Requires hard Mac reboot.Running OS X Yosemite ver 10.10.1. Nov. 10, 2014 update to OS X has not helped.

I have had problems with iPhoto stability since the OS X Yosemite upgrade. Now running ver. 10.10.1. iPhoto freezes totally and frequently when using the cropping tool. The freeze requires a full Mac reboot. The November 10, 2014 iPhoto update has not helped.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • System optimization freezes during Itunes 7.6 upgrading

Hi, the last step (system optimization) freezes during the Itunes/Quicktime/Imovie upgrading.
What can I do ? Thanks for any advise.

+Now I get bluescreen every time I try to open or configure Quicktime or even I if my Quicktime-Plugin for IE or Firefox starts...+
What numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file (such as, for example ati3duag.dll), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're just seeing a "flash" of a blue screen, we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (On Vista, go "Start > Control Panels", click "Classic View", click "System").
    2) Click "Advanced System settings".
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

  • Upgraded to '11 and it freezes during import, alternatives?

Hi, I "upgraded" to '11 and it will not open.  It freezes during startup (during loading) and I am forced to force quit.  This is making me nuts and has me seriously reconsidering my near thirty year commitment to Apple. I have scanned the web and while I gather it is a common problem, none of the frequent cures does anything for me.  I deleted my Flip program and don't have Divx for example.
So, is it possible to get and install an older version at this point?  I read some say the 2006 version was stable.  Any reasonable alternatives to iMovie?  I am trying to make a time lapse movie using photos taken with the iMotion app on my ipod.   Also, can I get my money back from the app store?
I would love some advice or pointers to a thread if this has been covered (hoped it would be in an FAQ somewhere), thanks!
    David

I would suggest that you contact Apple at the Contact Us link at the bottom right of this page.
