IPhoto freezes looking for photos on an external hardrive

I have a MacBook Pro and am running 10.4.6 and iPhoto 6.0.2
Since my laptop has a limited hard drive I store the most recent photos on my laptop and the rest on an external hard drive. iPhoto allows me to do this as long as I turn off "copy photos to iPhoto Library".
The problem: When my laptop is away from home and my external hard drive, I receive errors the tune of "The volume containing 'filename' cannot be found" Obviously I cannot view a full resolution of a photo that is not stored on the laptop, so I would click 'cancel'. But now it happens at a random time interval after launching iPhoto and it always targets a movie file (*.avi). Although it lists the option to cancel, i cannot click on it because the colored spinning ball of death prevents me from doing anything. I must 'force quit' iPhoto and relaunch.
Does iPhoto have to be connected to ALL the photos in the library at ALL times without recieving errors? And why do the errors happen at random times and not immediately when I launch the program?

I haven't tried adding keywords yet. (largely due to the fact that there isn't a universal binary of Keyword Assistant available yet). You've brought up a good idea about storing the movies seperate from the pictures. I might try that if I can think of a good way to do that. What bothers me, is the fact that iTunes already operates exactly as I want iPhoto to. I store all my movies and music videos on an external hard drive. iTunes doesn't care unless I try to play them, and even then it doesn't crash the program. You would think that iPhoto would operate similarly. Perhaps I should just cram a 200GB hard drive into my laptop

  • Looking for photos appears on my 2nd monitor when entering screensaver?

My screensaver is set to do a photo slide show. I use a Samsung TV as a second monitor. When it goes into screensaver mode the screensaver will play on the mac but not on the tv. it says "looking for photos" on tv. What is going on?
    Thanks,

Have you tried using the app iPhoto Library Manager (VersionTracker.com)?
You may want to post your question in the iPhoto forum. I've asked questions there that never stumped a user named Terence Devlin.

  • Looking for "photo movie"

I am setting up the new iMac 20 inch. I have gotten photo booth working. I like to make a little movie with the isight camera which I could email in a common file type. I guess I am looking for "photo movie".
    Robert

I believe iMovie '08 will do the trick -- IIRC, there's a selection in the menu bar to record video clips from the iSight camera. Sorry I can't give you specific details at the moment, but I'm in the middle of an OS-X re-install and haven't re-loaded iMovie, yet.

  • I'm looking for photo editing software

I am looking for photo editing software that is fairly easy to learn and I also want the feature of adding a splash of color to a black & white photo.  I've seen there is Photoshope Elements and there is Lightroom.  What is recommended?

For editing an Image, as you describe, Photoshop Elements would be my choice.
There is also a very helpful, and active Ps Elements Forum, where you will find easy instructions on doing what you describe, plus much more. Should you go with Ps Elements, that forum is: http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements
In general, if you have a Grayscale Image (B/W), just change the Color Mode to RGB, create a New Layer, and paint in the color that you want. However, since I do not use Ps Elements, there might be some extra things, that will help you get the desired results, and that Ps Elements Forum will be great at helping you.
    Good luck,

  • IPhoto freezes when ordering photo

As of today - 29 May 2012, iPhoto freezes when ordering photo prints with the message..
'There was a problem communicating with the Apple Online Store. Please try again.'
I had to 'Force quit' iPhoto to continue.
OK, so maybe the store is down but surely that should not affect the software on both of my computers?
    Andy Forrest

It's OK now - I see the store is open again - but it does seem odd that lack of store makes te application freeze solid!

  • I have accidently deleted the IPHoto App. I was looking for photos that were accidientrly deleted. my photos had disappeared

I have lost my photos and was looking for them on my laptop. I'm not sure what happened... but now I do not have my IPhoto application either. I looked in trash but have not found it. Now I have two problems: no app and no photos too.

    You can reinstall the app.
If your iPhoto library still exists in ~/Pictures then you have not lost anything. Just reinstall the iPhoto. If you don't have a disc it should be available in the iTunes store (Click Purchased in the Quick Links section on the right)
You can also do a Spotlight search for iPhoto just to make sure you didn't move it accidentally.

  • IMovie 11 freezing looking for old (trashed) computer doing iphoto import?

Odd problem with my new iMovie. When I try to run it and it goes through the update of files from iPhoto, it freezes and says that the network connection with an old desktop computer we used to have is broken. Then it just reappears and will never complete the iphoto transfer. I have changed iphoto libraries to a new one and that solved the problem, but we have a ton of movies in our iphoto library that I need in imovie. Does anyone know how to disassociate iphoto library from an old computer? In iphoto there are no issues with looking for the old computer, and I don't think we ever had them synced to begin with. Any help is appreciated.

    Hello,
I have the same problem on my mid 2012 MBP retina 15 inch. For example, when i am importing from facetime in final cut, sometimes it records in 720HD @ 24fps, and sometimes in non-HD @ 17fps.
Everything is up to date, i have tried recording from photobooth and quicktime, and the issue remains the same.

  • When i look for photos in finder my iphoto library does not appear, but when i open iphoto, all my photos are there, how can i fix this?

this means i can't attach photos from iphoto to emails for example, how can I remedy it?

Of course you can, just remember that iphoto replaces the finder. It's the manager for your photos.

  • Looking for photo files

I have the latest Macbook Air with Lion preinstalled, and while I love iPhoto, I can't find my files.
When I turn on iPhoto all the photos are there, but when I look for them with finder, I can't find them anywhere.  I assumed that they would be under the file "Pictures" but there are only three things there. iChat icons, iPhoto Library(which is the link to start the app), and Photobooth Library (also a link to start the app).
On Snow leopard I could access my photos through finder, but now I can't.  When I want to upload a photo to my blog I can't find it.
Any ideas other than dragging every photo to the desktop to create a link there?

Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that +looks+ like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Screensaver pref hangs 'looking for photos'

I have a large iPhoto library of some 30000 images, and within that, smart albums of pictures taken for each year in the past.  I set my screesaver to display photos from 2005.  Now, often, but not always, after the standard five minutes of inactivity, my screen goes black and the legend 'looking for pictures (or photos)'  is displayed, and there it sits forever.  I have to force shut down and restart the iMac in order to get out of this.
What is wrong, and can I avoid this in the future?

Have you tried using the app iPhoto Library Manager (VersionTracker.com)?

  • IPhoto user looking for a bit more editing ability

I love iPhoto but I wish I could extract parts of pictures to go on other pics. Then I use a cloning tool to fix. I can't stand Adobe Elements is their any other program out their that people are using for this kind of editing. Aperture?

    matbran
I don't think that Aperture is what you're looking for. Try Graphic Convertor
    http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/index.htm
or try searching on http://www.macupdate.com using 'image editor'.

  • HT1339 I'm not sure what I did, but my computer asked me what I want the ipod to do, and now it will only look for photos or videos on my device, and will not connect to itunes to download songs and podcasts.

My computer asked to what I want the ipod to do. Now it only looks for videos and photos, which it does not find. I can't sync my podcasts or music to the device. Not sure how to fix it. It is an ipod touch.

Connect your iPod to the computer (and iTunes) and look on the Device/Music pane, as below:
You need to have Sync Music ticked, as shown.
If you have Entire Music Library checked, then all your music should go back onto yuor iPod.
If you have chosen Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres, you will see additional options for choosing which of those choices you want.
If you make any changes here, you may need to click on the Sync, or Apply, button to make the changes happen.

  • Need advice on what to look for when buying an external HD

    Hello iBook enthusiasts,
I want to buy an external HD for backing up my important documents, and for having a way of booting up just in case the iBook should fail. I have searched some of the old posts, but I am still a bit confused.
So far, it seems that the most important criterion is that the drive have FireWire in order to be bootable.
I don't want to spend a ton of money. Somehow, I get these emails from Buy.com, advertising their specials. For example, they had a 250G one for $100 (although that particular deal is now expired). This seems like a good deal to me. Is that right? Should I try to buy the largest or smallest one that's in my price range? If iBook does die, I would like to still be able to use the HD with whatever replacement I get.
Also, is there any particular brand that I should either look for or avoid? How do I know these things?
Anyway, sorry these questions are so vague. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Ibook G3 500 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   14 GB HD, 640 MB RAM

    Anna:
Yes, rule no. 1, Firewire or FW/USB
    2. Largest HDD you can afford (having more space than you need it not a problem; needing more space than you have, is.)
    3. 7200 rpms. (Most of them are, but not all)
Here is a list of some of the best buys already sorted for 200-300 GB.
Different folks like different manufacturers. I have had my LaCie for 2 years. No problems. I like it for it's compact size and elegance.
Here are some good hints from Dr. Smoke on Backup and Recovery. Instead of Retropect, which I could never quite figure out, I use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.
Post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • What to look for when purchasing iPhone external battery?

Next month I’ll be taking a 5 day trip to NYC and I’ll be using my built-in iPhone 4 Google Maps GPS a lot, so I’m in the market to buy an external battery. So with that said, what should I look for when purchasing one? I’ve noticed a lot of these advertise the mAh (milliampere-hour), and then some will also advertise the amperes themselves (i.e. 5200 mAh (2 amps)). What’s the difference when they advertise both?

DVI support is a must and most LCDs in the size that you are looking for are going to have it.
Your MB can drive a display with a resolution of up to 1920 x 1200 which just happens to be the resolution of the 23" Apple Cinema HD Display. I didn't want to pay Apple prices for a display, so I went looking at Dell. I picked up a 20" 2007WFP display from them for about $360 shipped and it works like a charm with the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
I prefer displays that use a S-IPS panel over the more common and cheaper TN panels. S-IPS is much better for color reproduction and that is why Apple uses them in their Cinema Displays. Dell uses the same panel is some of their 20" models - I got one - but some buyers are very upset that they got a TN panel instead of the S-IPS panel. I was lucky I guess.

  • Looking for photo frame with lots of features

Look for ipad photo frame app. One that will let me display pics from various sources, like facebook, my servers in the home, flickr.
    Thanks

I tried many apps, but I narrowed it down to... Iphonso.com Air Frame.
It lets you view your facebook photos or friends', flickr via a bunch of categories, or enter tags. It includes your local photos.
It does not have the ability yet to to include your network shares, but I am hoping they include this in the next version.
So now looking at pics that are being streamed in from remote site, and at the same time listening to music that is also streamed in (via Home Sharing). Bliss.
    Thanks for all your help
