IPhoto freezes when I try to create a photo book

iPhoto 9.5.1, MacOS X 10.9.5
I create photo bokks with iPhoto since 2006 and never had a problem with that. The last book I created was just 2 months ago.
Now I tried to create another photo book with appr. 300 photos, but whenever I click "New Book" iPhoto will show the beachball for 10 or more minutes. When I quit iPhoto and restart it, it will ask to repair the mediathek because that is corrupted. However, even after the repair I cannot create a new book!
Please help!

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists when trying to create a new book. Does it?
NOTE:  FWIW I prefer to create a new library for each book I make because that way I can isolate it from the day to day usage that my main library gets.  It helps isolate it from accidental deleting of photos already in the book in case I want to order another copy at a later date.  The library is small enough that it can be "archived" to a CD or DVD disk. I use the paid version of   iPhoto Library Manager to transfer the photos I want in the book from my main library to the book library.
You will still need to determine what is wrong with your main library.

  • Iphoto freezes when I try to print a picture

Why does iPhoto freeze when I try to print a photo?  I have to force the program closed.

That was a test to determine if the original library was damaged and it was.  You did follow the next step but there's one more fix you can try on your damaged library:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • HT2638 Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos

Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos.  I have tried all of the first aid options.  Can I only delete small batches?  I am trying to organize and edit my 16K + library and deleting small batches is very time consuming.  And iphoto is running very slow...  Is there simply better software for a large library or tips to erase these photos?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Iphoto freezes when I try to open it.

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.

  • Aperture wants me to create a new Apple account when I try to purchase a photo book.

When I try to purchase a photo book that I have created in Aperture 3, a screen comes up asking me to create an Apple account, which of course I already have.  Even changing passwords doesn't help.  I worked on the book at an Apple store, and when this problem arose, even the store personnel couldn't solve it. Can't get past this step to buy the book.

So I just had this same problem (kept failing with "try again later"), and after trying a number of workarounds including removing my apple ID payment method (and wasting 2 hours of my life), I finally got it to work by creating a new account. You'll need a second email address. I'd have to rate the purchasing experience a 0 out of 10...

  • IPhoto crashes when I try to email a photo

When I try to share a photo in iPhoto '11 on my Mac, the application stalls for a minute then crashes.

OK, I'm out of ideas. Something changed in your set up and just trying to find out what it was. Maybe someone in the iPhoto forum can help. https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto?view=discussions

  • IPhoto 9.4.2 constantly freezes when I try to look at photos or videos

iPhoto 9.4.2 freezes when trying to open photos or videos preview show up fine but actually opening them to zoom or opening the video causes a freeze and many time it also causes a crash...
Ps I already rebuilt the library... Didn't work any other ideas would be helpful.

If you have gone through all 4 iPhoto first aid steps, and the issue is not resolved, you can try one other option.  It involves downloading a 3rd party software entitled "iPhoto Library manager".  You may find it will help.   If it does not, then we would use the restore from time machine.
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
              2. Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
              3. Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
              4. In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
              5. Click on the Create button.
If we need to use time machine........
    - close all open applications
    - in the top menu bar, select "go", then select home, then pictures
    - here you should see your current "problem" iPhoto Library
    - click on it once, hit return on your keyboard, and it will allow you to rename your iPhoto Library.  I suggest you rename it to iPhoto Library old
    - once renamed, open it, then go to "file / switch to library".
    - in the new screen, select to "create a new" iPhoto Library
    - by default, it will call it "iPhoto Library" and place it in your pictures folder
    - when this new library launches, it will be totally blank and have no images in it
    - quit iPhoto
    - launch time machine
    - in the right side, go back to a previous date.  This will make the finder window from this date come to the forground.  In that window, select your pictures folder, then click on the "iPhoto LIbrary" once, then click restore in the bottom right
    - you will get a dialogue stating that "there is already something there called iPhoto Library".  Tell it to replace it

  • IPhoto freezes when I try to import photos - why?

Whenever I try to import photos from my camera (an olympus 780) iPhoto takes a long time to 'think about it' and then just freezes. It's the same when I try to bluetooth photos from my phone to iPhoto. Now when I just try to open iPhoto it freezes - why is this? I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and have iPhoto '11.

First try this: iPhoto_Pref_and_Cache  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • My webmail account freezes when I try to create a new email.

    Windows 7;Firefox 11.0. Ameritech.net email account.
When I try to send a new email, I type a letter in the "TO:" line. A drop down menu opens from my contact list. I select an email address and the menu and webmail freezes. I've already contact ameritech. My webmail works in Internet Explorer correctly. The conclusion is that the problem is with Firefox. This problem started today. Last night we did have a power outage unexpectedly. I suspect that has something to do with the problem I am experiencing.

    Hi dudds1,
I'd try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
You could also try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles?s=create+a+new+profile&r=2&e=es&as=s#w_creating-a-profile creating a new profile].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • IPhoto freezes when I try to export

Hello, I use iPhoto for all my image storage/basic manipulation, but I am moving to Aperture for RAW image manipulation and things like that. I want to export all my photos so I can store them on another hard drive, and have them all in one folder (for now at least), but whenever I try to export them all, iPhoto freezes and I have to force quit. I could just drag the library folder to the hard drive, but I'd have to move the pictures out of the folders. Besides, the export feature should work, I shouldn't have to go out of my way to do it! Anyway, if anyone knows why/how to do this, please let me know! Thanks in advance.

    Yhbv24:
Try copying the Originals folder from the iPHoto Library folder to the other HD. The will be in folders that are representative of your rolls in iPhoto. If that copying to the HD fails you maybe can identify the culprit by checking the Console logs for the Finder.
Then you can put them all into one folder if that's what you want. Regardless of which way you go if you want to keep your keywords and comments so that Aperture can read and use then use the procedure described in Tutorial #1. That will write the keywords and comments to the original files for other applications to read and use. Do this before exporting or copying to the other HD.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My system iphoto11 when i try to purchase a photo book? what can i do?

My iphoto11 is crashing  when I try to purchase on the web a photo book. What can I do?

Create a PDF copy of the book as described in this Apple Document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it and proof the contents before ordering.
Save the PDF file to compare with the printed version when you receive it.
If you're unable to create the PDF file boot into Safe Mode,  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and try creating the PDF file again.  If you're successful continue with the ordering while in Safe Mode.
Are you ordering an XL sized book?  iPhoto is know to have problems with that size. If you can't get the XL sized book ordered in Safe Mode you'll have to change the size to Large. Here's how:
1 - Control-click on the book in the left hand pane and select Duplicate from the contextual menu.
2 - carefully check all text boxes and photos to make sure all is as you want it.
3 - create the PDF file before ordering.
4 - if unsuccessful boot into Safe Mode and continue as described above.

  • IPhoto crashes when trying to open a large photo book

My wife has been working for days assembling a large (90+ pages) photo book. Now when we go into iPhoto and try to open up the book she's been working o, iPhoto crashes. I can open other photo books we've made, just not that one.

back up and rebuild your iPhoto library - launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and command (apple) keys and use the first three options
Just tried rebuilding the thumbnails like you suggested and still no luck.
If you used the first three options you rebuilt the entire library - not just the thumbnails - did you select all three or did you select only rebuild thumbnails?
You need to rebuild the library - not just the thumbnails

    1 -
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.
2 - if the preview is good boot into safe mode and order

  • Why does iphoto freeze when I try to add a location?

Every time I try to add the location of a photo, I get the spinning color wheel.  I ultimately have to force close iphoto to be able to access to program again.  Any hints?

  • IPhoto freezes when trying to print small size photos

I'm trying to print the smallest sized photo. Everytime I ask it to print it freezes and I have to force quit. If I print a bigger sized photo, such as 4X6, it works fine. Earlier in the day I was able to print the small photos. I've trashed the plist and restarted but it's still doing it.

The settings that I show in the screen shot give you, as owner, complete access to that folder and all files inside. I also set my admin name as the group because I'm the only user on the computer and set others are read only. As long as you have read and write access you good to go. Then the bottom check boxes apply those permissions and will unlock any file that may have inadvertently been locked.
You can set the permissions a different way as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
