IPhoto freezing up when adding keywords

Hi all, I've been trying out iPhoto 6 for the past few days and have run into a frustrating problem. Every time I add a keyword to a picture, through Keyword Assistant or otherwise, iPhoto will take time to "think" before adding the keyword, usually for a few seconds. With multiple photos being tagged with keywords at once, it can drag on for a minute or two. As you can imagine, when trying to sort through and organize newly-imported pictures this can be a real pain.
My organizational structure is basically all smart albums, and I have about 25,000 photos altogether. Other than that it seems to run smoothly. I've upgraded to 6.01 but this doesn't seem to help. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I have the exact same problem : Adding a keyword to 3 pictures takes 6 seconds (or more) and don't even think of doing it on 20 pictures... iPhoto 6 will either freeze or will take several long minutes to complete.
I regenerated the thumbnails, no effect (wild guess). I tried the fsck -fy while booted in single user, no effect. I tried with Onyx to clean everything, no effect (well, one, the browsing the library is faster). I've also rebuilt Spotlight index (both with a software and manually), no effect.
My library contains 18,000 photos. iPhoto 6.01.

  • A3 Crashes when Adding Keywords to Buttons

When I added about 12 key words to make buttons in "Edit Buttons Set" I click okay and Boom! A3 crashes. No errors, no warnings, just bombs out! Happens every time, so now, I have to add 4 or 5 buttons and then click ok, go back through that step until I have what I want.

I experience the same behaviour as you all did. Thus far, I noticed that it tends to occur most often when I've just switched libraries and try to use the keyword buttons. Apparently it throws the application off that it needs to access a different keyword database.
Also, I noticed that if i delete keywords from the keyword HUD, but then open the edit dialog in the button drop-down list, the keywords reappear if they were on any displayed buttons.
Subsequent deletion & rearrangement through the dialog then often causes a crash, or at least beach-balling.
    Any ideas thus far, guys?

  • Bridge crashes when adding keywords?

I was hoping to organize my photos through Bridge but it keeps crashing when I add keywords.  Sometimes it works and other times it crashes even if I ony select one photo at a time?  Very disappointing.  This is the first crash on PS CS6 after 30 plus hours of use.  I have 8GB of RAM.  The RAM meter on Windows 7 is only at 20%.  I also tried turning off AVB anti-virus but no go.  I increased the cache too but no go.

Thank you for helping...Updated my video card driver but no change..... it still crashes.  Sometimes it works sometimes it crashes on a single photo file.

  • Crashes when adding keywords

For some odd reason, Bridge sometimes stops allowing me to select keywords of photos. It highlights the keyword, but won't allow me to place a check in any keyword checkbox. As a work-around, I have to shut down Bridge, and then pick up from where I left off. Can anyone tell me why that happens, and what I gave to do to avoid this annoying action?
    Thanks!

    Hi David,
unfortunately, I cannot help you - I have got the same problem. And a number of other problems with Bridge in addition to that.
Maybe you have encountered other problems, too?
I already went through the Adobe TechNote ID No 331594 which can be found here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=331594&sliceId=1
Additionally, I spent some hours searching the Internet for a solution. I read most of the posts in this forum which seemed to fit to my problem and played a lot with different preference settings under Bridge.
So far I have come to the conclusion that Bridge is the problem itself. Apparently, there are a couple of useres out there who have similar problems.
The additional issues I have encountered so far are (list may not be complete ...):
Bridge freeses from time to time on startup. Sometimes Bridge closes down unexpectedly during use.
Any actions under Bridge are slow, slow, slow. If I select one picture and then just click on an other thumbnail. It takes at least 2 seconds until the other thumbnail is selected. Sometimes the "OSX coulored spinning wheel" appears. Soon after startup the ventilator of my MacBook starts running. Processor load rises and fluctuates between 20% and above 100%.
Sometimes selected pictures are opened in Photoshop without me having double clicked on the thumbnail or hit the enter key. The same happens from time to time, if I select more than one picture.
I have updated both PS and Bridge and OSX recently.

  • Iphoto deletes events when adding events from flagged photos

    Dear community,
Whenever I use flagged photos, previous events get deleted. I don't know whether this is because the photos can only be in one event at a time, or that this is erroneous behaviour.
In my logic, there should be possibility for as much events as you deem possible, yet it is mind boggling, that you don't have an automatic option, that makes you put photos in two events. Also it is mind numbing that you can't just copy & paste the pictures anywhere you like. You can paste in albums, but not into events.
You have an option to "Create event from flagged photos", yet not an option to add photos to an existing event, you must flag them first.
Then there is the sudden discomfort of brain pain, when you find out the previous events you've created stopped seizing to exist, and you have to sift through 500 photos, just to find 3 photos you've flagged in the creation of a previous event. Which defeats the purpose of creating them.
The albums work good for this purpose, yet I want to be able to pin albums to the back board, where the events are. Or have events that will not disappear, may contain doubles with other events, or/and aren't restricted to copying into them. It would save a lot of time, to just CMD + C, CMD + V.

    You're confusing Events and Albums.
In my logic, there should be possibility for as much events as you deem possible, yet it is mind boggling, that you don't have an automatic option, that makes you put photos in two events
A photo in two Events is using twice the disk space. An album just references the photo in the Library and can be in as many albums as you like while wasting no disk space.
You have an option to "Create event from flagged photos", yet not an option to add photos to an existing event, you must flag them first.
Eh, you have to flag photos first before you can create an Event from them too...
Then there is the sudden discomfort of brain pain, when you find out the previous events you've created stopped seizing to exist, and you have to sift through 500 photos, just to find 3 photos you've flagged in the creation of a previous event. Which defeats the purpose of creating them.
Flagging photos does not delete Events. Emptying an Event deletes them.
You can't have what you want.

  • IPhoto 8.1.1 "freezes" when adding comments

When I click on information of a photo and input the location and then add a comment, then I click "DONE", iPhoto "freezes" and I watch the bouncing ball. I must force quit.
Please give me a good positive solution.
    Thanks.

Hard to know if this is a "good positive solution" as I've not seen your problem mentioned before. So here's a good but uncertain one. You'll just have to try it out and see.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT2638 Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos

Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos.  I have tried all of the first aid options.  Can I only delete small batches?  I am trying to organize and edit my 16K + library and deleting small batches is very time consuming.  And iphoto is running very slow...  Is there simply better software for a large library or tips to erase these photos?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto freezes when I try to print a picture

Why does iPhoto freeze when I try to print a photo?  I have to force the program closed.

That was a test to determine if the original library was damaged and it was.  You did follow the next step but there's one more fix you can try on your damaged library:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Iphoto freezes when I try to open it.

Iphoto freezes when I try to open it.

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.

  • I would like to see the added keywords under the picture like iPhoto does it. Is that possible? I cannot find an answer

I would like to see the added keywords under the picture like iPhoto does it. Is that possible? I cannot find an answer in Aperture 3.2.1

Hello Wontolla, I meant the Aperture main menu, there is a sub menu "View", see the Screenshot:
Set all flags in the Metadata Display submenu as I did,  to show Metadata in Viewer and Browser, and then select "Customize"
Pick the Metadata fields you want to display for all views.
Make sure, that "Contents -> Keywords" is checked.

When making a photo book, my iPhoto freezes during uploading the book to the storey.  I have attempted this 4 times now and I don't know what to do! I know the file size is massive due quantity of large image files, but I don't want to reduce the image file size and compromise quality in the book. How can I get past this?
    My macbook air is os x 10.9, using iPhoto 11 9.5 (902.7).

Try Old Toad's solution here:   See   Re: iphoto : upload impossible to print a book
Try to boot into Safe Mode and order this way, or sign into a different user account and try to order as a different user.

  • Acrobat freezes when adding a signature field

We are currently using Acrobat 9.5.5 (updated on 12th June 2013) on a windows 7 (64-bit) machine, when adding a signature field to a PDF that has been created using the AdobePDF printer (from a file created in AutoCAD 2013) Acrobat freezes and starts to use excessive amounts of RAM (peaking at around 1.9GB), and eventually either crashes or after about 30 seconds adds the field.
We've tried to use Acrobat XI (trial version), but this seems to make the problem worse (using over 3.5GB of RAM) and taking in excess of a minute to eventually add the field.
The problem seems to be limited to certain files, 2 in particular are causing the problem, both of which are around 5MB in size, when we add a signature to other smaller files the problem isn't as crippling, the "freeze" only stays for a couple of seconds and the field is usually added.
