IPhoto froze deleting photos off camera, files are empty

Hello,
I came home from New York and imported all my photos. When it was done I told it to delete the originals - the card was nearly full. I got a spinning beach ball and the program froze. Thinking it'd be much faster to simply format the card from the camera, I force-quit iPhoto and formatted the camera.
The next day, after taking a bunch more pictures at the 4th of July Fireworks, I tried to open my photos in iPhoto, and found that approximately half my photos were present. Further investigation inside the "Library" package revealed that they were there, but all files, save for 14, were listed as "Zero KB".
I suppose I was stupid for having such a lack of patience and I should have let it finish, but is there anything I can do to get my photos back? I've already grieved for them (the good ones were the Empire State Building and the Cloisters, which I'll miss dearly).
Any ideas or help are absolutely welcome. Thanks!

Some people have found the photos in the import (or importing) folder in the iPhoto library - go to your pictures folder and right click (control click) on the iPhoto library and choose show package contents from the menu that appears. Look (do not touch - if you change anything inside the iPhoto library you risk corrupting the library and losing more data) and see if there is a folder named import or importing - is there is drag it to the desktop and look inside - if your photos are there you can import them otherwise something like media recovery is your only chance
In the future it would be good to use a USB card reader to import your photos and after they are imported and checked then format your card in your camera. This eliminates problems like you had and insures that the card is correctly formatted.

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • With icloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from camera roll. I run an older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. Can I transfer pics from i stream to camera roll to allow a non-icloud back up to my PPC? Precious photos are close to 30 day cut-off

With i cloud set up on my 4GS I deleted photos from Camera Roll to make space knowing I would have them backed up on icloud via Photo Stream. I now find that my older PPC G5 with Lion which wont run icloud. I have an ipad3 too, which of course does. I want to copy photos from Photo Stream back to Camera Roll on the phone so that I can back up "old school" to iphoto on my ancient mac. The controls seem to suggest that as an option but when I select multiple photos in Photo Stream and select "Save to Camera Roll" the photos do not appear on Camera Roll as expected. I am running close to the 30 day limit and do not want to lose hundreds of precious photos (or have to email them to myself individually). Can the ipad3 help at all? Any ideas good people? Dan

If only it were that easy Winston. I connect with a USB cable, iphoto opens and I can only see the photos in Camera Roll, not Photo Stream. There does not seem to be a way of aceessing other files in the phone from iphoto and, as in my initial message, I can not transfer the photos to Camera Roll on the phone. My iphone and ipad software is up to date, but my iphoto is '08 version 7.1.5 with my mac running 10.5.8 which is the best I can do on the PPC without messing everything up.  I dont have the dough for a new mac or I would have gone for that option...am I stuck?

  • How do I delete photos off of my 5s but ensure they are saved in iPhoto?

How do I delete photos off of my iPhone, but ensure they are saved in iPhoto or on my hard drive.

You can import them to your computer via a cable as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
Alternatively, if you have been using Photo Stream, you can open iPhoto on your Mac, and on the menu named "iPhoto" click Preferences and then iCloud and put a check mark in front of "Automatic Import" to automatically import photos from My Photo Stream into regular iPhoto Events. You can also open iPhoto and click on iCloud in the left hand pane and manually move photos into Events.

  • HT201317 Do I delete photos off my Macbook so their deleted off my iPhone or do i delete them off of my iPhone so they are deleted off my Macbook? SO confused.

Do I delete photos off of my iPhone so they are deleted off my iPhoto on my Macbook? I'm SO confused.
I just want to delete the photos and not have them come up again when I plug my phone in.
I also don't want duplicates of my photos.

iPhoto sees your phone as a digital camera and offers to import any photos it finds in your camera roll, and only if you click the Import button in iPhoto.  If you don't want to import photos, don't connect the phone to iPhoto.  If you want to transfer photos from iPhoto to your phone, do that from the Photos tab of your iTunes sync settings and sync.  If iPhoto is automaticallly opening when you connect your phone, go to iPhoto>Preferences>General and choose "No application" from the drop-down list next to "Connecting camera opens:".
Or are you talking about photo stream photos?

Detail.  I Attach my camera and the fields where the photos usually show up are empty and at the top of the screen it says all photos from camera are downloaded. But they are not. They can't be.
I fixed the problem somewhat myself by removing the miniSD and manually inserting it. It did not populate automatically. I had to open iPhoto and then it populated only the most recent photos I had taken which fortunately were the only ones I need. No error messages this seems to be a new occurrence.
Is there a way to just turn iPhoto off and download my photos to the folder of my own choosing?

Sure - in the iPhoto prefercences set action when a camera is ocnnected to Image Capture

Just updated our iPad2 to iOS 7, and all my photos in camera rolls are gone, can't locate them anywhere. Were they just deleted, or is there a way to find them? Did not have iCloud account, so not backed-up there.

We're you backing up to a computer using iTunes? If so, restore the backup from there.

  • Delete photos from camera option not appearing in iPhoto

when transfering pictures from my CyberShot camera to iPhoto, I am no longer asked to delete photos from camera. can this be corrected?

It is not recommended to have iPhoto delete the images on the card. The safest way is to delete the images on the card directly in the camera, after making sure that they have been imported correctly and making a backup of the card.
But if the option to delete the images is not available, there may be something wrong with your preferences - see LarryHN's post here:

  • C902 / Media Go and deleting photos off the phone

I have just downloaded the latest version of the PC Companion onto my computer, so far so good. Is there someone out there who can explain in the most simplistic terms how to delete photos off the phone. When I installed PC companion it put over 400 pictures onto the phone somewhere automatically- and I want them off!  I cannot understand the instructions on the media go programme about how to edit/delete photos; clearly the instructions are not meant to be understood by us who have little computer/phone knowledge.
I am currently deleting each picture one at a time, very frustrating I can tell you.
    Any help is much appreciated

It's on the phone: Main menu--Organiser(or My Stuff)--File manager--click right/left for Phone memory/memory card--Camera album or Pictures--Open--Options--Mark--Mark All or Mark Several--Mark the pics you want--Options--Delete

  • How to delete photos off my ipod touch 4g after updating

How do u delete photos off my ipod touch 4g after updating it to ios 6.0.1?

To delete photos and videos from your device
To delete synced photos and videos
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
    Click Apply.
To delete Camera Roll photos and videos
There are two methods to delete items from the Camera Roll:
Import the Camera Roll to your computer, choosing to delete items after import.
    or
Delete photos and videos from your device manually. Open the Photos application, open the Camera Roll, tap the Action button, tap each photo to select it, and tap the Delete button.
Note: For photos and videos you want to save for later, import them to your computer before deleting them from the Camera Roll.

no longer asks if I want to delete photos on camera. I cannot move photos to trash. how do I delete them?

it is rrecommended that you never have iPhoto delete your photos - import them and be sure they are safely in iPhoto and then after one (or more) backup cycles use the camera's format command to reformat the memorycard and delete the photos
As to the lack of being ask
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • Deleting photos off iphone

i have recently purchased a iphone 3g and i have added my music and pictures to it. i have sinced realised that there is a photo album that i dont want on my phone and am wondering how to delete it. i have plugged my phone into itunes and tryed everything possible but there just doesnt seem to be a delete album button. can someone help.

That really didn't answer the question. I had the original iphone and now the 3gs and had no problems until one of the last updates. It's like the 4 ruined it for us simplistic users. Now, your phone has "Albums" on it instead of the plain, old camera roll. That would be fine if it were user friendly.
If you go to the information tabs and choose which photos (from your mac) you want to sync and choose an empty foler, the duplicate albums finally delete on the device. However, even if you do this and you are only left with the camera roll on the device, you can't delete the pics anymore. The bottom of the screen has only two tabs - albums & places (who really cares about places?!?). The top tabs has Albums and send. The phone used to have a trash can, a send (box w/arrow) and one other choice I can't recall. What happened. I would like to delete photos from the device as I go. How do I get the old screen or how do I delete photos off the device now?

  • How do I delete photos from camera roll but keep same photo in album

how do I delete photos from camera roll but keep same photo in album

You can't. The albums that you created on the iPad do not actually contain copies of the photos, but merely pointers to those photos. If you remove the photos from the camera roll, they will be removed from the iPad. Albums on the iPad are simply for your own organization on the device. Those albums cannot be imported to your computer either, since the photos do not exist in the albums.

  • I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

I need to minimize the space photos take on my MacBook Pro OSx 10.7.  They are in iPhoto, Aperture, Pictures/Photo Library, etc.  Are they taking space in all of these locations?

Are they taking space in all of these locations?
It depends on how you are using iPhoto and Aperture.
iPhoto and Aperture each create their own library files, and the default location for them is in /users/youruseraccount/Pictures
You can configure iPhoto and Aperture to use the same Library file, in which case your photos are only stored once.  But if you are using iPhoto & Aperture with independent library files, you may in fact be duplicating your storage.
The second consideration is whether or not you have configured iPhoto and/or Aperture as reference libraries, in which case their library files only reference photos you have stored in other places on your hard drive.  Setting them up as reference libraries does not duplicate the photos inside the library files.
