Iphoto gets stuck on finishing last import.

I have this problem where iPhoto gets into a state where it won't quit, and won't let me import anything. If I try to empty the (iPhoto) trash it tells me I should "Wait until the import is finished". Only it isn't importing anything. So far my only solution to get it back to a usable state is to force quit it. Then it is good for another import, deleting the trash, or quiting.
Is there some other import process that I can kill to get iPhoto back into a useable state? I'm importing tiffs off disk.

I was having this same problem recently ie. iPhoto appeared to be in a loop (also 'non-responsive' in red type in the 'Force quit' dialogue under the Apple menu) at the end of supposedly importing large numbers of photos. I spent about 3 days trying to work out what was going wrong or whether there was a decent solution (read; wasted my time and generated stress). I'm posting this now in September 2012 because it might help someone, even Apple customer services, who are experiencing similar situations.
Also, word of warning, some people have suggested going into the iPhoto folder structure and moving stuff around in there etc. etc. It's not a good idea, really. You are basically playing with a very complex database and, most likely, you won't remember exactly what you did in there in order that you could undo it if something goes really wrong.
But I did dig into the iPhoto folders while that spinning icon was rotating endlessly while the iPhoto dialogue merely informs the user that it's 'finishing import'. What I discovered was that, when this is happening, iPhoto is actually still adding image files into the database, so, whatever you think, it's not in a loop at all. The problem is that when you're importing a huge amount of images at one time, like I was (approx. 50 000), that this 'finishing' process can take a long, long time...something like 20 hours for me. Well, after a couple of days I did manage to get my photos to open normally in iPhoto but it took a lot of patience.
So Apple, why couldn't you acknowledge this problem (which has been around it seems for around 3 years at least) and add a progress bar with 'remaining processing time' prediction that would appear during the 'finishing' process. This would surely also please iPhoto customers who really think that iPhoto is incapable of importing their images without crashing/looping and therefore giving up altogether/switching to other products.
Finally, now that all those images of mine are in the database iPhoto is insistant on analysing them for the face recognition function (which I don't use, don't want to use in future etc.). But it seems that you cannot turn off this function so I'm expecting that my Mac will now be eagerly processing all my images for faces for weeks or months to come, consuming processor time that I need for other things and burning unecessary electricity. (Actually it seems to really crash iPhoto at some point, if I leave iPhoto running overnight, for example).
Anyways, hope this post is useful to someone.

  • My iphoto keeps jumping back to last import

My iphoto keeps jumping back to last import, I am using photo's in a event and if I click on anything on my desk top it flips out fo the event I am in and jumps back to last import please help

Close iPhoto and open the iPhoto Library package as shown in this screenshot:
Look inside the Auto Import folder and move whatever you find to the Desktop.  Do not many any other changes.
Launch iPhoto and it should not jump back to the last import smart album.  If there are any image files that you moved to the Desktop that you want and are not in the library then reimport them.

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

  • IPhoto gets stuck in the middle of importing pictures

I am using IPhoto '09 and whenever I try to import photos from my IPhone 4s, it always lags and gets stuck after importing around half of the photos (1000+) and the loading bar just remains there, no longer moving, the rest of the pictures fail to get imported. It can even import up to two thirds of the pictures on my IPhone and then just remains stuck there. I have tried to restart the import several times but it always ends up getting stuck halfway and my photos don't get imported. Is there a way to solve this issue?

  • Iphoto gets stuck

I think I have a bad photo or something but I don't know how to fix. When ever I open iPhoto it asks - photos were found in the iPhoto library that have not been imported would you like to import them. If I say yes, it will then get to a photo and ask about importing duplicates. If I say to to not import photos and apply to all then at some point the import just gets hung up and never finishes. I have to force Quit iPhoto. Then the next time I open iPhoto it will ask the same question but it doubles the amount of photos to import. I am now up to like 5K++ but the file was originally only 800 or so. How can I stop this circle of doom? I want to be able to clear the file iPhoto is pulling from but is that even possible.
    thanks

If you control-click on your iPhoto Library, and choose Show package contents, you'll see a folder called Auto-Import. Whatever's sticking is in that folder, since iPhoto attempts to import its contents every time it launches.
If you're not sure if you've imported all the photos, drag the contents out to your desktop or somewhere, empty the Auto Import folder, and try importing the dragged out stuff in smaller chunks to help you isolate the bad photo.
You can simply drag a few photos at a time into the open iPhoto window. The batch that hangs it will be the one that has the bad photo, that's when you try importing one at a time till you hit the bad one.
Console might report the bad photo too, but in the case of a hang maybe not...

  • My iPad gets stucked in the last step of the sync with the computer.

When connecting the iPad to the computer the iTunes starts, reconizes my iPad and starts the sync of the iPad.
It syncs the contacts, calendars, pictures, music, etc, but in the last step (7th; "finishing Sync") it stucks and stays for ever without finishing.
I cannot load a previous backup because as soon as I connect the iPad to the computer the Sync process starts and no button is available.
I've tried to load again iTunes to start from the begining but it is still saying the same, that the Sync process is finishing and is blocked there.
    Any help?
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi Demo,
I've tried what you say but, if I'm doing it right, it doesn't work because after rebooting it goes again to syncing and stucks on the last step.
Nevertheless let me check if I'm doing it right; When you say "Before you restore from the backup, quit iTunes, ...." you mean "Before" or "After" because I don't understand how I could reboot the iPad BEFORE I restore from the Backup if it is already restoring.
Just let me write down the procedure to check that it is the right one:
1- I launch iTunes (iPad not connected) and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices, and I check the box to Prevent the iPad to syncing automatically. I click OK.
    2- I quit itunes.
3- I connect the iPad to the computer.
    4- I launch iTunes.
5- I go to Restore from Backup
6- Restore from Backup is finished
    7- I quit iTunes
8- I disconnect the iPad from the PC
    9- I reboot my PC
10- I reboot my iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons... iPad stars.
11- I connect the iPad to my PC.
    12- I launch iTunes
13- I click on sync button.
If the procedure is right then my problem must be another one because when I do it and it starts syncing again the same problems comes back again and the syncing never stops at the last step.
Thank you anyway for your time and support.
    Best regards,
    Francisco

  • IPhoto constantly flips back to Last Import folder

When viewing photos in iPhoto v9.4.2 (710.42), no matter which folder I'm in, my view arbitrarily switches back to "Last Import".
Any reason why?  Any way to fix this?
    Thanks
    Annoyed...

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it does do the following: Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the problem isn't replicated in the new library then your current library is the culprit. In that case  Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Import new photos into iphoto, browser not seeing recent "last import"

I use several web based applications that ask to upload photos. I go into browse and iphoto and for some reason it won't pull the last imported photos - it is as if the browser is caching the old events and last import. When I exit FireFox and iPhoto and restart my machine it will see them. I must be missing a plug in or something - any ideas?????

  • IPad / iTunes sync gets stuck at the last step

Whenever I sync my iPad and iTunes, it doesn't complete the last step and gets stuck on "Waiting for items to copy".
First it was with "Step 7 of 7: Syncing Genius data to iPad", so I deleted all Genius stuff and links to it. Since then it gets stuck with: "Step 6 of 6: Synching Artwork to iPad" and just hangs with it forever.
I am an Apple newbie, the iPad 3 is my first Apple appliance.  What can I do to avoid having to exit syncing by unplugging the iPad? (NB iTunes runs on a PC with Windows 7.)
    Thanks, Joseph

It may be that you have a couple of problem files. I have a similar issue, where some music, that I purchased via iTunes, won't sync on to my iPod.
I'd suggest that you start my turning off as much syncing as you can in iTunes. Use iCloud to transfer your calendars, contacts etc.
Then try syncing some of your music and other media manually. If there are errors, then iTunes should flag them up by saying "Could not copy xxxx because ..."
Personally, I only sync media manually, as I don't always want iTunes to perform a full sync every time I start it up. As my iPad is set to sync wirelessly, it connects to iTunes every time I open it.

  • Iphoto 6 shows only the last imported photos, doesn't include previous pics

History- when I first got the computer I didn't understand how iPhoto accessed its photos, and deleted some of the content from the iPhoto folder directly - since then every once in a while I get a window that asks me to rebuild my cache - the apple employees at the genius bar told me that if I rebuilt my cache, that the thumbnails wouldn't match, and I could possibly loose photos. So I have not updated the cache in 4 years, and have not had any problems.
Recently, my computer was slowing down, so I took it to the apple store and had them help me remove everything from the computer and placed onto an external drive, and then wiped the computer by reinstalling the system. Since then I have run iPhoto through my external hd, and did not replace ANYTHING onto the computer - everything is on the external hd. had no problems for a year. After this last upload(about a week ago) to iPhoto I noticed that it caused all previous photos (10,000+) to disappear - the only ones that were in the library were the ones I just uploaded.
I then returned to the apple store and they used the option "create new library" to find the existing library.. but the computer was not even allowing the library file to be clicked on. So, for some reason the old photos are gone, and it wont allow the existing library to be chosen - yet there are still photos that it is accessing from that same library.
Now when I open iPhoto, I get a message that says "In this version of iPhoto, the thumbnails have been improved. Upgrading the thumbnails will take a while, depending on the number of photos in your library. Do you want to upgrade your thumbnails now?"
I am afraid that if I do this, it will cause the same problem of confusing the program, and not having the thumbnails match the iPhoto files, possibly causing me to loose photos.
Is this message the reason why I can't access the old photos in the library? How would you suggest I go about correcting this problem in a way that I don't loose photos?

I didn't understand how iPhoto accessed its photos, and deleted some of the content from the iPhoto folder directly
This corrupted your library - b continuing to use a corrupted library you have continued the problem and it sounds like it finally has come in to bite you
You can try using iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to rebuild your library - this creates a totally new library so if the results are not acceptable you can go back to what you have
other than that you have no choice I am aware of except to start over - drag the iPhoto library to the desktop and launch iPhoto and create a new library - open the old corrupt iPhoto library and open the originals folder and drag each folder in it onto iPhoto recreating your rolls but losing all edits and other changes

  • Mail get stuck while trying to import mailboxes

I have upgraded from Panther to Tiger (10.4.7) and when I opened Mail for the first time, it autumatically started importing my old messages and mailboxes. but when getting to Message 214, it stops. I had to force quit and start again, but the same happens every time I open Mail. I have a POP account on gmail and an older one from Yahoo. I also see the messages that have been imported in the library folders, but dont see anything in Mail. Also, can't send and recieve new messages.
    Please help,
    thnx. Lil

This is a known issue. The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.0 is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
If you're still able to use Panther (e.g. install it on an external disk), your best option probably would be to clean up your mailboxes there first and try again afterwards.
