IPhoto hangs "closing the library"

Every time I close iPhoto on my iMac it endlessly displays "Closing the library."  But it never closes unless force quit the program.  Suggestions?

Well, that's a handy bit of information. 
It didn't do it the first time it converted it.
Goes to my issue with the lack of transparency with some Apple products.
Too much gets hidden from the user.
Huh? You installed beta software? You know, nothing is hidden from the user who is prepared to learn and take the time to do it. It's a bit like a car in that way. Some folks never open the hood and look at the engine, some folks enjoy dismantling and re-assembling them.  If you're not the person who enjoys that puzzle then don;t get involved with beta testing. Things go wrong. That's what the process is all about.
And I think you'll find that every software manufacturer on every OS might have a better help file.

    Can you restore your iPhoto Library from a backup version, that was created before you added the slideshow?
    If not, have you tried to rebuild the slideshow with iPhoto Library Manager?

  • Photos displays "Closing the Library" for a loooong time when quitting

    I Have just been migrating a large Aperture Library to the new Photos app. The import took many hours, and now just trying to quit, it is displaying the message "Closing the Library." This has been up for a couple of hours.
    IS this a one-time saving of thumbnails, etc. or will this happen every time?

    My mom had the same problem the "Photos" app. She has a 21.5 inch, Mid 2010 iMac running OS X Yosemite version 10.10.3.
    So I tried "Force Quitting" the Photos app by clicking "Force Quit," which is under the Apple Icon in the menu bar, highlighting the Photos app icon in the pop-up window and clicking the "Force Quit" button.
    Once Photos was closed, I shut down the computer waited for a minute, then powered the computer back on. Now the Photos app seems to be working fine, including having updated the library with photos taken recently, even during the period when the Photos app was having the problem.

    What version of iPhoto are you using?
    This is the the first time I have ever launched it.
    Does that mean there are no photos in the library? If so move it to the Trash bin in the Dock and launch iPhoto again.
    If there are photos in the library do the following:
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    Click on the Add Library button,                         
    and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
    Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
    Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
    Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

    Went to 'organize bookmark library' and pulled down the 'view' menu
    Selected the 'Bookmarks Menu' on right
    Pulled down 'views', selected 'sort, the 'sort by name'
    all the bookmarks sorted alphabetically as I wanted...
    Closed the Library, pulled down the Bookmarks menu, and the bookmark were unsorted as if I never organized them

    Sorting in the Library is a temporary sort, it resets as soon as you close the Library window.

  • IPhoto "hangs" when Loading Library

    I'm having an issue with iPhoto, where, when I launch it, the app appears to open, but in the middle, where the photos are normally displayed, it hangs up saying "loading library", with the spinning gray cog wheel.
    No photos ever load, yet the program never crashes. It just stays in this state.
    I have opened iPhoto on a test users account, although none of my photos were present, but the app opened right up, leaving me thinking it's related to my normal user account.
    I have tried trashing the iphoto plist preference from my user preferences folder, but that did nothing. Same thing happens...
    iPhoto is version 5.0.4, and I'm running OS 10.4.11
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Another test - create a new library in your regular user account and see if it works. Hold the Option key as you launch iPhoto, select "Create Library". Give it a different name so you don't overwrite your current library. Does a new, empty library open? Import some test photos and see if it works. If so...
    It sounds like the database in your library is damaged beyond repair. Do you have an up-to-date backup? If not, you can try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It sometimes is successful when iPhoto's rebuild fails. Also, it creates a new library for the rebuild, so if it doesn't work you can just trash the new library with no harm done.
    If iPLM can't rebuild the library, then you may have to start over with a new library. You can follow the steps under "Manual Rebuild" in the Apple article referenced above. Before you do, I recommend you read lori_diloreto's post in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1853164. She describes an alternate (better) way to repopulate your library, and she details what you should expect if you follow her instructions.

  • IPhoto Hangs in the Background

    If I'm using iPhoto and I switch over to another app (Safari or something) for any length of time longer than a minute or so, iPhoto hangs and I have to force quit, because I just get a beach ball. This happens all the time (I've been using iPhoto for an hour and it's happened about six times), making it hard for me to use iPhoto at all. I've tried trashing the pref file, but that doesn't help. I'm not running that many programs right now, and I've got 4187 photos. I'm not sure, but I think it only happens when I'm in edit mode.
    20" iMac G5 2GHz/15" PowerBook G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2GB RAM on both

    Try manually setting the preferences for the iPhoto Library folder and its contents as follows:
    Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
    1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
    2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
    3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
    Also it wouldn't hurt to clear out the user caches with OnyX.

  • Upgrading iPhoto library to iPhoto '08 corrupted the library

    I've seen discussions on a similar topic, but none with quite the same issue. I moved my iPhoto library from my old iBook G4 to my also old (but upgraded) PowerBook G4. The PowerBook G4 had iPhoto '08, so my library was converted/upgraded when I opened it the first time. This corrupted the library. I was able to rebuild part of the library but manually dragging the individual folders in the iPhoto package contents to the iPhoto icon in the dock, saving half of the pictures, but it isn't working for the rest of them. Specifically, those pictures whose organization (album names) were retained in the iPhoto library package contents were successfully imported. But for the rest of the pictures, iPhoto imposed its own organization in the package contents: that is, my album names are no longer there, and the photos are organized in folders with dates (eg, April 1, 2010) for their names. When I try to manually import these pictures by dragging the date-named folder to the dock, I get an error message. What do I do?

    I would start by trying again - updating older iPhoto libraries does not normally corrupt them - connect he two systems together and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto

    Everytime I open iPhoto, it displays a message that it needs to upgrade the library and when I proceed it displays that it needs to repair the library? WHat gives? EVERY TIME I OPEN IT?

    With iPhoto 11 do the following: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.

  • Incorporating an IPhoto CD in the Library

    Hello again experts,
    Frustratingly, I am once again unable to do something that was easy on a previous occasion. I have made an iPhoto CD from film rolls on my lap top, which runs iPhoto 2. I wish to incorporate these photos in my main computer library, which runs iPhoto 6. When I insert the CD, iPhoto opens normally, and the CD icon appears in the source panel. However, I am unable to drag the CD icon to the Library icon - I cant "pick it up" with the cursor. What am I doing wrong??

    When you click on the Icon can you see the pics from the CD in the Window. Grab those with your mouse and drag them to the Library Icon.

  • What is Photos doing when you quit and it gives you the message box "Closing the library..."?

    It hangs for a long time like this.  Haven't yet force quit since I don't want it to damage the photo library.  Most recent - over 3 minutes to quit.

    So latest shutdown of Photos took over 5 minutes.  Also, Photos doesn't recognize location data from iPhotos.
    After finding out that Apple jettisoned the ability to manually add/edit location data and batch edits I'm going back to iPhoto.  They shouldn't have gotten rid of core functionality just to integrate photo management better with iCloud.  Hopefully, they will add those features back into the product but until then I will be using iPhoto.

  • Iphoto hangs (20 hours) when upgrading from 6 to 11 when writing new library data (Lion 10.7.4) - Can't rebuild because I need to print a finished book - can anyone help?

    I startet by having iphoto 6, and the library update did not finish up.
    Tried to uninstall iphoto 6 and then install '11 again.
    I have back up my library on external.
    I have tried to download the tool for preparing an old iphoto library, to see if that helped but no. It is also for version 5 and earlier.
    When I try to open 11, it says it needs to upgrade library - I click upgrade - it checks the old library files, creates the new, and I can now see my old album names and so on, but then it hangs (I tried to let it hang for 20 hours now, because it does not say that the program don't answer, it is as if it is still working.
    I believe I have around 6-7.000 pictures, but cleaned it recently, emptied the trash (and has also emptied the general trash and downloaded the latest version of Lion, 10.7.4 - even if I had it anyways)
    I just bought '11 because I had trouble printing a book I just finished for my weeding in 2 weeks, so I am really keen on getting my library back in full style asap, even if I have to get an older version of iphoto..

    Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create and run a new library then your current library is the culprit.
    In that case make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:

    I select photos in iPhoto. I touch the "Share" icon. Then iPhoto hangs. The app is unresponsive to touch. I must fully close the app to get it to respond to my touch again. However, I cannot share these 10 photos, and it's driving me crazy.
    Plus, this website would not display anything I typed in this post, until I touched the "Boldface" icon. Go figure.

    There are two libraries where this plugin might be
    HD/ Library
    and
    HD/Users/Your Name / Library

But when trying to upload a photo in iphoto I found the library folder in Users. I can see my doc in Office 2011 Autorecovery, but can't access it! How do I get User to show Library then I can get to my long lost document?

    The auto recovery dat should be in the Microsoft User Data folder in your documents folder, not in the Library. However, I Haven't had to look recently.

  • Iphoto removing photos from some events but not the library

    I have the current MacBook Air. I import all my pictures through the photostream. Iphoto creates an event for each month, eg June 2013 Photostream.
    When I was looking through these I noticed some pictures had gone missing. I thought these had somehow got deleted but if I check under Faces they are still there and if I look at the last 12 months album they are still there as well. In the Last 12 Months album they are in the right place order wise.
    I am new to Iphoto and it worries me that my pictures are going missing from some places as I am concerned that some may being deleted completely. It also makes it difficult when you are making up an album of an event as I need to look in a few places to make sure I have all the pictures from an event.
    I can confirm that the pictures were definately in the monthly photosteam event and that they were not deleted from it by me. It has also happened in a couple of the months so it is not just one folder that is effected.

    Let me try and explain it this way.
    Say I have taken ten pictures, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
    These were imported to iPhoto and went into an event it created called June 2013 Photostream. They were all imported and showed up in order 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
    Some of them I have now tagged faces in etc.
    When I go back now and look in the June 2013 Photostream I only see 1,3,4,5,6,9,10
    But if I look in the last 12 months album I still see 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 in the right place and the right order
    Pictures 5,6,7,8 all had my face tagged and when I look in my face album 5,6,7,8 all show in the right place in the right order.
    I have got iPhoto to rebuild the library etc and they do not go back to showing in the Photostream import folder.
