IPhoto hangs, found Console message

Though I'm a Mac user for over 10 years, I'm no good when deciphering Console jargon or attempting a Terminal command.  My iPhoto has (as well as most everything else with Mavericks) been unusually slow when opening, importing, changing folders, editing, tagging, opening a slideshow, etc...pretty much in every way.
I opened Console as advised and found this repeated message (happening 4-5 times per second) while I was either opening iPhoto or importing 3 photos:
11/12/13 8:47:57.000 AM kernel[0]: Sandbox: mdworker(3284) deny file-read-data /Users/jchadwickwilliams/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Contents/PkgInfo
11/12/13 8:47:57.000 AM kernel[0]: Sandbox: mdworker(3284) deny file-read-data /Users/jchadwickwilliams/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Contents/PkgInfo
the final line of text that stopped this repeated text was:
11/12/13 8:48:31.961 AM WindowServer[125]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "iPhoto" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
Any ideas what any of this means?  I'm really at a loss with this data...looks like something in my iPhoto library is invalid?
I know this next question shouldn't be in the iPhoto section, but perhaps it is related somehow.
I don't recall what I was doing at the time, but one minute prior to the iPhoto messages, I noted these messages alternatiing over 60 times:
11/12/13 8:26:58.000 AM kernel[0]: Sandbox: com.apple.qtkits(3138) deny file-write-create /Users/jchadwickwilliams/Library/Frameworks/TempEWSFile

It seems I've got some major issues.  A point in the right direction would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,

OOOKKKAAAY, I exported a slideshow this afternoon (about 800 photos) and as has been the case for a couple years, it took forever....the second half of the exoprt had no preview screen, just a black box.  It must have taken 2 hours.
I just looked at Console and found a MOUNTAIN of errors.  One thing I noticed about the exported slideshow is that some of my preferences for individual slides were not maintained and the show went on as if I didn't edit/alter the overall theme of the slideshow.  I went back and personalized each slide setting again to find they sometimes worked in preview mode, but then when I returned, my preference for the slides were missing.  FRUSTRATING.  And so are those obscenely replicating Console messges...I'll throw out a few that have taken over my screen real estate:

I'm getting denied a lot on my own system.  And it seems my system doesn't have sufficient ability to handle the workload as I see I'm using, "too many resources after 2048 files".
I think I'm going to try to rebuild my entire database.  What have I got to lose?  iPhoto worked FAR BETTER as a guest user.  Does htis mean I should toss my plist files?
And as always...computer connoisseurs, child prodigies, insightful sages, and holy healers are all encouraged to respond (as is anyone else with mindful advice, I'm not that picky).
Thanks for throwing me a life-line,

  • Aperture Hangs with Console Message

    Hello All,
I can no longer get Aperture to run on my MBP. I upgraded to Leopard a couple of weeks ago and had Aperture 1.56 running sucessfully for 2 weeks or so. Then it started hanging up at the startup screen. I am not sure what to do next, possibly reinstall Aperture. Not sure. Does any one have any thoughts where to go next.
The Console showed the following message:
    12/28/07 1:12:16 PM Aperture[368] * Assertion failure in -[NSMenuItem initWithTitle:action:keyEquivalent:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-949/Menus.subproj/NSMenuItem.m:182

Thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

Try moving your Aperture preferences file to one side (Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist) or create a temporary new user and see if Aperture starts when logged into that account.

  • Finder. Console Message "No icon found :("

    Hi all!
    I have iMac11,2, Mac OS X 10.6.7
Sorry, English is not my native language, so to better understand situation, describe steps that I do.
I mount any DMG image, automatically opens a Finder window and displays contents of that image. I unmount DMG image did not close this window. Either through mouse right-click menu or drag across disk icons to Trash. Image unmounted, but a Finder window is not closed. It is empty and close it does not - the buttons in the upper left-hand side of window is not active. Saves only restart Finder.
If I unmount the DMG image from the Finder sidebar or to unmount close the window - so no problem.
Looked into the console - there's a lot of messages from Finder "No icon found: (". An experimental found that these messages are connected with the situation described above, but that was the reason that caused all this, could not find...
Was anyone has a similar problem? Are there any solutions?
    Thanks!

Something has messed with the PATH envrionment variable.
You should ensure first Oracle Home works fine, next the other oracle home. This is a frequent issue when dealing with more than one oracle home, environments can be mixed without a warning. From the error message:
I get the message 850 not found; No message file for product=NETWORK, facility=NL message if I try to run lsnrctl; I see a lot of suggestion that this is a problem with the ORACLE_HOME setting - thus my question below.
It means Oracle is executing binaries at a home directory and is trying to obtain error message text from another, so it is a symptom OracleHomes are mixed.
Please check the PATH environment variable and explicitly set it before you attempt to start your listener and database.
Once you have been successful with this first oracle home, continue with the other, same issue. reset environment variables to a suitable value.
On the other hand 00850 doesn't look like an oracle kernel error message, but rather an EM error. When you attempted to start your EM it culd be trying to obtain binaries from the second Oracle Home. Same issue, verify and explicitly set PATH environment variable before attempting to start EM.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.

    I keep getting this message:
The photos have been placed in the folder /users/debbiecampbell/pictures/iphtot librry recovered photos_11.  68 photos found in iphoto library that were not imported.  Everytime I open iPhoto I get this message.  I have deleted the recovered folders numerous times.  A new one is made each time I open iPhoto.

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

  • IPhoto hangs when attempting to import certain CR2 files

    Hi everyone.
After 3 months of owning and using my MacBook, I have finally found that iPhoto isn't a bad software at all, and I want to start using it. So of course the first thing I did was to import some recent photos I made.
By now I have successfully imported JPG and CR2 files from my external FAT32 HDD. But there are some CR2 files that make iPhoto hang: Actually not the whole application hangs, but only the import section (it is still possible to browse albums etc). clicking the "Stop" button won't change a thing, despite the text "stopping..." underneath the progress bar.
A friend of mine tried to import one of the regarding CR2 files, and it worked on his PowerBook G4 - same software versions.
Help. I don't know what to do. Been searching for a solution for days. Thanks in advance for every hint.
    MacBook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPhoto 6.0.5 (316); Camera: Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT

Ah - sorry, it's hard to gauge what level of expertise people have and probably safer to underestimate than overestimate.
So any messages in Console when iPhoto hangs? Sometimes those are human-readable and offer clues.
What about opening the file using QuickTime? Does that work?
It's possible you ran into an actual bug, but it's hard to tell without the files. If you manage to isolate the exact files that cause the hang, you could try other things, like import them to a newly created library (option-launch iPhoto just in case you didn't know)
You could also dig through the EXIF data that Preview shows (Cmd-I) and see if those files have anything in common, like a bogus value for aperture or focal length or something. I know a friend complained about photos taken by the manual Lensbaby lenses, but I don't know if that has been addressed in recent updates.

  • Iphoto crashes w/ error message....

    I'm runing iPhoto 4.0.3
Today I loaded some photos off a friend's digital camera. After importing the photos, opening the app, adjusting/deleting things I quit the application. Later, when I re-opened application, it started to show my library and then flashed the following error message:
"you can't open your current photo library using this version of iphoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iphoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iphoto."
The only option is to click "quit."
I've tried to re-install the 4.0.3 updater for the program but it won't work because it says no version of iphoto was found in the app folder. I've also tried to delete the folder containing the photos I loaded most recently but that didn't work either.
    What's the solution?

Before I forget to mention it... Never delete any file(s) or folder(s) from within the iPhoto Library folder -- it's bad kharma.
If your photo database wasn't somehow corrupted (resulting in the first dialog you described), your subsequent removal of a folder from the iPhoto Library folder would have certainly done the trick. I'm not sure how you'd be certain of which folder contained your most recent photos, anyway. But that'a all water under the bridge.
Try starting iPhoto while holding the shift+option keys. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the intent to rebuild. Click "Yes", then click "Save".
If you still encounter the prompt about conflicting versions after the rebuild, post back and we'll alter the rebuild sequence a little.

    Hi,
I am trying to run sqlldr. But I got this message:
    Message 2100 not found; No message file for product=RDBMS, facility=UL;
I checked my ORACLE_HOME and it is set to: C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server which includes the folders BIN,RDBMS, ....
I checked my C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\RDBMS and there is no ORAUS.MSG inside the folder. If this is the solution where can I find this file? I read in the forums to copy it from the server directory to the client, but I couldn't find it anywhere on my machine.

I attempted to open iPhoto and got this message: you can't open the application because it may be damaged or incomplete. Now the iPhoto icon has a little line through it.
Nice. Shall I say goodbye to my treasured iPhoto library? What happened?
I did just upgrade my iPhone to OS 5. Could that be related somehow?
    Help!

    1. Back up your iPhoto Library - you should always have a back up anyway.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    2. Reinstall
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • IPhoto hanging and crashing

Ever since I updated to iPhoto 08 this morning practically nothing works as it's supposed to. When I start iPhoto, the normal iPhoto window comes up showing my photos. I can scroll through them and even zoom around but as soon as I click anything iPhoto starts to act up. Editing photos simply does not do anything as iPhoto will either hang or do nothing. When I click events in the source pane my photos disappear only showing a grey background and iPhoto hangs. If I use expose at that time certain UI widgets will disappear. As soon as I click the close button iPhoto will either quit without saying anything or crash with the normal "application unexpectedly quit"-message.
I really don't understand what the problem is....
Already updated to 7.0.1, repaired permissions, rebooted, reinstalled it, created a new library (while even no photos in a library will show the same symptoms) and deleted caches and the preferences.

    Tobias:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. See if this will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Everytime I try to export my slideshow I get the "The operation can't be completed because the item can't be found." message. How do I fix?

Trying to export a pretty basic slideshow to our desktop/iTunes and I keep getting the "The operation can’t be completed because the item can’t be found." message when I try to export. What am I doing wrong?

    What is your iPhoto version?
Your slideshow may contain a photo or a video where the original file cannot be found. Try to find the offending item.
You could duplicate the slideshow (select it in the source list, ctrl-click, and the select "Duplicate").
Then remove half of the photos from the copy and try to export this partial slideshow. if it works, you will know, the problematic photo or video is in the other half.
Keep duplicating the slideshow, removing photos from the copy and testing with smaller sets of photos, until you know exactly, which photo it is.
Then select this photo and use the command "File > Reveal Original" to see, if the original file is still there.
Check the revealed original, if Preview can display it. If the file is o.k., copy it and remport it. Add the new imported photo or video to your slideshow.
If the original file should really be missing, restore it from your backup.

  • Are these console messages a problem?

I am seeing console messages that I have not seen before. I am not having any problems that I know of, but these 3 types of messages (from multiple apps) keep popping up in my console:
MDS Error: unable to create user DBs in /var/...
Could not initialize source from /Users/...
Found source of class (null), but no such class was found.
Any ideas of the cause? Are they indicative of real problems? Sample console output below:
    Thanks!
    Paul
