IPhoto Hangs in the Background

If I'm using iPhoto and I switch over to another app (Safari or something) for any length of time longer than a minute or so, iPhoto hangs and I have to force quit, because I just get a beach ball. This happens all the time (I've been using iPhoto for an hour and it's happened about six times), making it hard for me to use iPhoto at all. I've tried trashing the pref file, but that doesn't help. I'm not running that many programs right now, and I've got 4187 photos. I'm not sure, but I think it only happens when I'm in edit mode.

Michael:
Try manually setting the preferences for the iPhoto Library folder and its contents as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
Also it wouldn't hurt to clear out the user caches with OnyX.

  • Firefox doesn't close but hangs in the background after closing it using up excessive memory up to 2gb.

When Firefox 8 loses connection to certain websites and I have to close it from the lower taskbar, it hangs in the background on task manager using excessive memory even after it is closed. I have seen it use up to 2gb of memory while closed but still hanging in the background in task manager. My computer slows down and when I try to open another browser window the little loading icon goes around and around so I check to see what is making it so slow. It is always firefox 8 hanging in the background using memory. I have 8gb of ddr2 memory on this 64 bit computer it shouldn't be slowing down because of a browser bug but it does.

From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the
issue may be caused by the clear history settings.
Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Privacy'''.
The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
'''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.
This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.

  • Hi, I tried to create a slideshow that contain more than 500 photos. Now, trying to open / execute / select the slideshow, iPhoto hangs with the spinning coloured wheel and I have only to force the deletion from System Preference. Any suggestion?

Hi, I tried to create a slideshow that contain more than 500 photos. Now, trying to open / execute / select the slideshow, iPhoto hangs with the spinning coloured wheel and I have only to force the deletion from System Preference. I already tried to rebuild the iPhoto Library (all the possible options) and tried to update teh version from 9.4.3 to 9.5 but the problem still persists: is there a way to delete this slideshow without selecting it ? How can I solve the problem, please?
    Kind Regards

Can you restore your iPhoto Library from a backup version, that was created before you added the slideshow?
If not, have you tried to rebuild the slideshow with iPhoto Library Manager?
As described by Terence Devlin here:  Re: iphoto library was created with an unrelased version of iphoto please quit and ugrade library by opening it in iphoto 2 or iphoto 4

  • Why does iphoto stay in the background off screen when I open it and won't stay on screen?

Since yesterday every time I try to open iphoto it stays out of sight. I can bring nto view using mission control but I cannot work with it.
I have downloaded mountain lion and iphoto but I still have the problem

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • IPhoto hangs "closing the library"

Every time I close iPhoto on my iMac it endlessly displays "Closing the library."  But it never closes unless force quit the program.  Suggestions?

Well, that's a handy bit of information.
It didn't do it the first time it converted it.
Goes to my issue with the lack of transparency with some Apple products.
Too much gets hidden from the user.
Huh? You installed beta software? You know, nothing is hidden from the user who is prepared to learn and take the time to do it. It's a bit like a car in that way. Some folks never open the hood and look at the engine, some folks enjoy dismantling and re-assembling them.  If you're not the person who enjoys that puzzle then don;t get involved with beta testing. Things go wrong. That's what the process is all about.
And I think you'll find that every software manufacturer on every OS might have a better help file.

  • Iphoto hogs my cpu, even when running in the background

Hi, I can't leave iPhoto running in the background because it regularly uses 47% to 98% of my cpu (although there are times that it only uses 12%).  Eventually the computer heats up to over 200 degrees (F) and freezes, forcing a hard re-start.  I did all of the iPhoto maintenance tasks (rebuilding, etc.).  My library does have 3000 photos, but I am running 16 GB of RAM.  I monitor the CPU use via "Activity Monitor" and no other program comes anywhere close to using that much CPU.  I'd appreciate your suggestions.

This is iPhoto for iOS.  You should post your question in the iPhoto for the Mac (iLife) forum to get better answers.

  • When I try to "Share" selected photos from iPhoto, my Air 2 hangs (the app hangs, not the entire device). Any suggestions to make this functionality work?, iPhoto hangs instead of sharing photos

I select photos in iPhoto. I touch the "Share" icon. Then iPhoto hangs. The app is unresponsive to touch. I must fully close the app to get it to respond to my touch again. However, I cannot share these 10 photos, and it's driving me crazy.
Plus, this website would not display anything I typed in this post, until I touched the "Boldface" icon. Go figure.

    Upgrade to v9.4.1 or
Trash the HP Plug in from /Library/Application Support/iPhoto
There are two libraries where this plugin might be
    HD/ Library
    and
    HD/Users/Your Name / Library
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)

  • While using a BDC in the background for some documents its hanging.

    Hi All,
I had used BDC call transaction program and i am scheduling the program in the background. Normally it works fine but for some quotes it hangs and takes a long time. So its not going to other quote. Any solution how to kill the hanged quote and goto next one?

Well, then you need to determine why (for which orders), the process is hanging. Compare with other orders, do a performance check, etc. There is no way for us to determine what the problem in this particular case is. We just don't have enough information to help you out here.

  • Iphoto 9.6 does not seem to have the option of customizing the background of a picture with a mat text etc it did in the prior version for printing. It there a way to have that option?

I updated from Snow leopard to Yosemite
I needed to update iPhoto 8 to the newest version iPhoto 9.6
the old version allowed me to customize my photo adding a mat  background colour text before printing
The new version 9.6 does not seem to have that option (that I used often)
Is it available and I just cannot seem to find it?
    I would appreciate help

For printing, you may want to download and install the BorderFX plug-in. It can add borders to a photo and watermarks and annotations when exporting from iPhoto.
You can download it here:  BorderFX - iBorderFX iPhoto

  • Can't open iPhoto. I don't get an error message. When I launch the application it just hangs and the pointer just spins. I pressed option   apple and rebuilt the library and thumbnails and it's still not working. Do I need to re-install?

If I do need to re-install how do I do this? I saved a back up of my iphoto library. Does this mean my photos are safe if I re-install. Help is much appreciated!

If you're getting a hang like this at opening
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How do you change the background colour of the bottom part of calendar on iPhoto

I have created a few calendars and photo books from iPhoto, but can't seem to find how to change the background colour of the bottom part of the calendar (where you write) to match the top part where you insert the photos.  Consequently you end up with a mismatch which doesn't look as good.  I can't believe that apple have not considered this since here are about 5 or 6 colours to choose from on the top section.  I am not running the latest version of iPhoto (which is 11 I think) as I'm not on Lion- is this significant??

Some theme will let you change the color of both pages. The travel themes, Vintage, Seasons, Kids, Colored Paper, Modern Lines, Classic (only the border around the date area), With the Big Date theme you can change the background on both pages.

My MacBook Air running on Snow Leopard gets extremely slow (almost like a hang, except if you wait about half an hr, it actually moves) after login interface. Sometimes it never gets past the background of the homepage, desktop doesn't seem to load. After multiple forced shut downs and left to run for hours, sometimes the desktop loads but the dock does not respond when applications are opened. The computer is then unable to shut down normally. Forced shut downs are necessary most times. Time machine backup takes extremely long, and attempts to use the time machine to bring the laptop back to the time befiore the problem arose was met with extremely slow and hung time machine function.
    Please help!

There isn't much besides a failing hard drive or other hardware fault that can cause those symptoms. Run the Apple Hardware Test, or just take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • IPhoto hanging and crashing

Ever since I updated to iPhoto 08 this morning practically nothing works as it's supposed to. When I start iPhoto, the normal iPhoto window comes up showing my photos. I can scroll through them and even zoom around but as soon as I click anything iPhoto starts to act up. Editing photos simply does not do anything as iPhoto will either hang or do nothing. When I click events in the source pane my photos disappear only showing a grey background and iPhoto hangs. If I use expose at that time certain UI widgets will disappear. As soon as I click the close button iPhoto will either quit without saying anything or crash with the normal "application unexpectedly quit"-message.
I really don't understand what the problem is....
Already updated to 7.0.1, repaired permissions, rebooted, reinstalled it, created a new library (while even no photos in a library will show the same symptoms) and deleted caches and the preferences.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. See if this will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto hangs/freezes/beach balls when printing TIFF: solved

I was having a problem today with iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17) on Mac OS X 10.9.3: iPhoto is freezing/hanging/beach balling when printing TIFF images.   I can effortlessly re-create the problem by selecting a specific TIFF image (from a Nikon D700) and attempting to print to my HP LaserJet m451dw (over the network).
The problem occured on the iPhoto print screen.  I was able to select 1 or more images to print and then select the print size (e.g. full, contact sheet, etc...) however when I click the Print button at the bottom of the screen iPhoto would hang.  Normally the printer dialog would appear.
I am using the latest Mac OS X 10.9 drivers from HP (Jan 2014) and printing from other apps such as Word worked.
I had tried the following with no luck: completely rebuilding the iPhoto DB; removing and reinstalling the printer; removing the iPhoto preferences.
The solution in the end was to rotate the TIFF image.  The wife had rotated a number of images  to portrait mode for a contact sheet but could not print.  After mucking about with the problem TIFF image I rotated it around back to landscape and it is now working.
I hope this helps someone else experiencing the same problem.

The reason I asked about the format of the disk is that folks report issues with Libraries stored on disks that are not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Terence could you tell me more? I have not found the corresponding post.
I have a huge (10K photos, 50GB) library on a RAID server under linux formatted as ext 2.
I am not a designer playing with fonts.
After I upgraded to iPhoto '09 from the DVD, it converted my library and I started to look at the animation which crashed in the middle (face recognition was running in the background).
Any attempt to restart iPhoto failed (empty window with spinning wheel).
Then I downloaded the last version of iPhoto.
I restarted from a clean copy of the iPhoto library.=>Same failure.
I try to rebuild everything (except the database which was not an option).=> same failre
I copied a smaller iphoto library on the local hard disc => it works.

  • Multiple iPhoto libraries when I click on the iPhoto icon in the dock.

I see four iPhoto libraries when I right click on the iPhoto icon in the Dock, but I only actually have two libraries.  The other two simply do not exist on my computer.  And when I click on the libraries that do not exist, obviously nothing happens.  In the image below, only the bottom two libraries are actual photo libraries.  The top two (iPhoto Spain and iPhoto Library) do not exist.
I have relaunched Finder, restarted the computer, and even restored the entire computer from my Time Machine backup.  Nothing changes.  No matter what I try, the non existent iPhoto libraries continue to be present when I right click the iPhoto icon in the dock.  BTW, only two bottom two iPhoto libraries in the attached image are in the Pictures folder.
How do I get rid of those two non existent iPhoto libraries from the Dock.

this happened after i hard shutdown with some multiple programs running which froze everything after powering back up the blue folders showed up
how do i safely remove these folders?
i imported 3 sets of photos and in the background processes were running which froze everything then i forced shutdown by holding down the power button.
