IPhoto hangs on initial startup

Purchased a new iMac Dual core and when I start iPhoto the hard drive starts what appears to be a search and continues polling. the Mac then gets slower and slower to respond to my commands and eventually ceases to respond. I understand that iPhoto will look at my hard drive (all of the 160Gb) and import any images it finds, but I did not anticipate this to imapct the machine so much or take so long. After over 20 minutes, I cancelled the application. Has anyone encountered a similar problem on initial program start, if so, how did you overcome it?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto does not search the HD for images to use. You have to direct it to import new photos into the library.
I take it you've not used the library before this and am just trying to get it launched the first time, right?
If you've have not photos in the library (open the iPhoto Library folder and check inside the Originals folder for subfolders with image files in them. If there are none, delete the iPhoto Library folder and the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder.
Now run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. Now try launching iPhoto and create a new library. See if it will open then and present you with an empty library window.

  • Iphoto hangs soon after startup

Since a few days I can't work with iPhoto. Soon after starting it up the coloured circle is shown and I have to terminate iPhoto. I already installed it once more again, but nothing changed, even if there is an empty library the app hangs.
Does anybody know this behaviour? Would be nice if I get help here!
    Thanx in advance

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Tecra M4 Hangs at POST (startup) screen, no beeps...Help!

    Hello everyone,
Currently my Tecra M4 shows the initial startup Power On Self Test (POST) screen with the Toshiba logo and various icons under it signifying what I think is the boost sequence.  It then freezes.  There is no beeping, and I cannot enter the BIOS (nothing happens when I press Esc or F1).
The laptop did not have any physical trauma before this freeze-up started (literally sat on a desk between working and non-working).  I hope it's not a hardware problem, but since I can't even get into the BIOS, I don't have my hopes up.
Here is what happened immediately before this symptom began happening: I had the computer on (and it was working perfectly) and it went into stand-by mode on its own.  When I tried to revive it, the screen stayed blank.  After waiting around for a few minutes, I held down the power switch to force it to shut off.  I then turned it on and there was a message saying "Resume failure" and it froze.  After waiting for a few minutes (the Toshiba POST screen never shows up) I turned it off again.
After that, every time I turn it on now, the system hangs at the initial Toshiba screen and does not respond to any keyboard commands.  After I press Esc or any other key 15 times (in an effort to get to the BIOS) the computer starts beeping anytime I press a key.  Otherwise, there is no beeping that occurs before that.
The system was fairly fresh off of a factory reset of the hard disk and the BIOS was last in its default settings.  I have disconnected all power (the battery, power cord, and the little NiMH battery connected to the motherboard) for an hour, but that did not help.
Do any of you have any suggestions?  How can I further troubleshoot this?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

I wouldn't reconnect the hard drive with the machine running. Best to shut down before doing that.
It's possible the cables were coming loose on the drive, but not likely.
Perhaps try reconnecting the drive and putting her G5 into Target Disk Mode. If it'll do this, you might be able to see if the drive has issues by running something like Disk Utility or DiskWarrior on it from the computer it's plugged into.

  • IPhoto hangs when creating a new album

    Hi all,
I am having trouble creating new albums in iPhoto '09. I select File -> New Album, enter an album name, and click [Create]. iPhoto then quickly locks up with the spinning beach ball of death. I have to Force Quit iPhoto. If I then reopen iPhoto and try to create a new album, it hangs again. The only way to create a new album, is to reboot my Mac Pro. After that I can create new albums. However, after my Mac Pro goes to sleeps and wakes up, I can no longer create new albums until I reboot again. Everything else in iPhoto seems to work fine.
The iPhoto library was initially created in iPhoto '08 running Leopard. Now I am using iPhoto '09 under Snow Leopard. I've tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist preference file. I have used Command+Option when starting iPhoto to rebuild the database. Nothing seems to work. I have my iPhoto library in its default location.
Any ideas or suggestions? This is very frustrating.
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
I fixed the issue of iPhoto freezing (beach ball of death) issue as well as many other issues. I reinstalled Snow Leopard and reapplied the updates.
Got say that reinstalling Snow Leopard is way easier than reinstalling Windows Vista. I have initial release of both. Apple packs most of its SL updates into one big bundle. While with Vista, Windows Update kept hitting me with 1 to 3 updates a time and then forces a reboot. After a dozen reboots, then it wanted to install Vista SP1. Then more updates and reboots before I got to Vista SP2. And then there were still more updates. BTW, Vista is running in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Thanks,

  • Can't get rid of login screen on initial startup.  Any Idea's?

I have an iMac with a 21.5 inch screen, recently upgraded to Lion.  The problem is when I power up in the morning I get a grey screen wanting my password, and below that, the option to sleep, restart or shutdown.  If I restart, it comes right back to the login grey screen.  If I enter my password, it will open up to the normal blue galaxy screen, but doesn't recognize my audio interface.  So I have to restart again and everything is fine.  I only get the grey login page on the initial startup.  I called an Apple technician and he couldn't solve the problem.  I am the only person using my computer, so I dont need to login everyday.  I also re-installed Lion to no effect.  Anyone have any idea's?  login at startup is un-checked.  Thanks!

System Preferences->Users & Groups->Login Options->Automatic Login (then choose your account name in the menu)
If you're sure it's set that way...
Try creating a new user account and setting Automatic Login to log in to that account. Does it bypass the login screen now? If so, the problem is with your primary user account.

  • Flash Builder 4.5.1 for Mac hanging/crashing during startup "Loading Workbench"

    Hello,
I'm having ongoing trouble with Flash Builder 4.5.1 hanging/crashing during startup.
Sometimes the following Terminal command fixes the issue:
    cd ~/Documents/Adobe\ Flash\ Builder\ 4.5/cascaded/308971/configuration/.settings
    rm org.eclipse.ui.ide.prefs
However this isn't a silver bullet solution, and sometimes the only way is to uninstall and reinstall FB4.5.
But this is a major hassle, especially after 3 or 4 times!
I am running Mac OS X 10.7 and have updated to FB 4.5.1 Premium and also installed Subversion/Subclipse as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK.
Problems seem to occur when working in SVN projects.
I have also noticed that the Delete and Arrow keys and Right Click fails to work sometimes also.
Is there a way to reset / clear FB 4.5 Prefs / Workbench?
    Thanks,
    David Douglas

Delete the Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 folder from your Documents (assuming you don't have anything valuable in there). That seemed to work for me, as I don't keep my projects in there but there were some temp files that were breaking it. You'll probably have to re-inport your projects.
Adobe, I'm getting very sick of your (expensive) products wasting my time.

  • IPhoto hanging and crashing

Ever since I updated to iPhoto 08 this morning practically nothing works as it's supposed to. When I start iPhoto, the normal iPhoto window comes up showing my photos. I can scroll through them and even zoom around but as soon as I click anything iPhoto starts to act up. Editing photos simply does not do anything as iPhoto will either hang or do nothing. When I click events in the source pane my photos disappear only showing a grey background and iPhoto hangs. If I use expose at that time certain UI widgets will disappear. As soon as I click the close button iPhoto will either quit without saying anything or crash with the normal "application unexpectedly quit"-message.
I really don't understand what the problem is....
Already updated to 7.0.1, repaired permissions, rebooted, reinstalled it, created a new library (while even no photos in a library will show the same symptoms) and deleted caches and the preferences.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. See if this will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto 6 Crashes on Startup

    HI,
My iPhoto 5 was working fine. Made the mistake of installing iPhoto 6 on a iMac G5 OS X 10.4.5 and not it crashes on start up. Have trashed the plist, tried removing "library6" nothing but nothing will get iPhoto to work. Is it possible to go back and reinstall iPhoto 5? I rarely use iPhoto but would like to have the slide show capability back. Please advise!! Help!

I too am having an issue with iPhoto 6 crashing on startup. The application window appears and immediately closes and opens the Apple Error Report.
I switched to another user, and iPhoto opens fine there, so it appears to be Library related - perhaps a specific photo.
Based on what I've seen so far, it appears that a specific photo (not sure which one exactly) is causing the issue. I am going to manually move some photos to a different directory to see if that will let iPhoto boot and then figure out which picture. Though I have thousands in the library, I can at least narrow down to the roll that I was looking at when the application first crashed.
By the way, the first crash involved the "grey screen of death" - with instructions that "You must turn off your Mac now".

  • On initial startup, wi-fi not connected, must restart

Whenever I start up the iMac, the wi-fi fan is blank, and the error message says wi-fi hardware not connected.  After I restart, everything works fine.  Minor issue, but it would be nice if everything worked fine on initial startup.

A couple of things to check are System Preferences - Network and make sure the Remember networks this computer has joined box is checked. Then ensure your network is the top choice in the Prefered Networks choice.
Also if you are in the habit of restarting your mac daily I'd recommend re-reading your manual where it clearly says:
    Putting Your iMac to Sleep
If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass thestartup process.

  • IPhoto hangs when attempting to import certain CR2 files

    Hi everyone.
After 3 months of owning and using my MacBook, I have finally found that iPhoto isn't a bad software at all, and I want to start using it. So of course the first thing I did was to import some recent photos I made.
By now I have successfully imported JPG and CR2 files from my external FAT32 HDD. But there are some CR2 files that make iPhoto hang: Actually not the whole application hangs, but only the import section (it is still possible to browse albums etc). clicking the "Stop" button won't change a thing, despite the text "stopping..." underneath the progress bar.
A friend of mine tried to import one of the regarding CR2 files, and it worked on his PowerBook G4 - same software versions.
Help. I don't know what to do. Been searching for a solution for days. Thanks in advance for every hint.
    MacBook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPhoto 6.0.5 (316); Camera: Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT

Ah - sorry, it's hard to gauge what level of expertise people have and probably safer to underestimate than overestimate.
So any messages in Console when iPhoto hangs? Sometimes those are human-readable and offer clues.
What about opening the file using QuickTime? Does that work?
It's possible you ran into an actual bug, but it's hard to tell without the files. If you manage to isolate the exact files that cause the hang, you could try other things, like import them to a newly created library (option-launch iPhoto just in case you didn't know)
You could also dig through the EXIF data that Preview shows (Cmd-I) and see if those files have anything in common, like a bogus value for aperture or focal length or something. I know a friend complained about photos taken by the manual Lensbaby lenses, but I don't know if that has been addressed in recent updates.

  • Reducing Initial Startup time in Flex 1.5

How can we reduce initial startup time of a flex application
? Suppose we have a large application , and we want to reduce
application startup time. Is it possible that we are able to devide
application into multiple SWF files and (Initially ) only those SWF
files are downloaded on client which are initialy required ? How
can we acheive this i.e architecting application in such a way that
intialy some SWF ( only required on client side ) are downloaded on
client and remaing are downloaded only when they are actually
    required by client ?
any help would be appreciated !!!!!!!!!!
    thanks

    Thanx for your reply !
yes i want to create similar look.I have two questions
    regarding this
    1) I have little idea that we can acheive such look by using
creationPolicy = "queued" , my question is ..........suppose we are
using a tabNavigator with 4 tabs and in each tab we have set
creationPolicy="queued" . we are using mxml custom components of
each size 20 Kbs. First time either only first view will be loaded
    on the client side(size 20 K) or all 4 views(size 80 K) will be
loaded. It is really important becuase I want to reduce initial
    startup time.
    2) How we can use such component which show size of contents
    downloaded ( as used at
    http://www.merhl.com/
    ). any sample code ?
    thanks once again !

  • Flex app hangs at "Initializing..."

I wrote a flex 3 web application that works on two computers
(one using localhost, another remote host). I'm trying to get it to
work on a third but when I try and load it, before I can even use
the app, when loading it hangs at "Initializing..." and never moves
    forward from there.
Anyone have an idea why it would work fine on two computers
but not the third? I thought maybe it was the environment of the
third computer, but yet basic flex applications work fine on it, it
just seems to not want to initialize this particular application.
    Thanks!

  • Iphoto hangs "Preparing to import" m4v

I have a .mov file which I opened using Quicktime and exported to an "iPad" movie (m4v filename extension -- remember when Apple didn't use extensions and bragged about it?  LOL).  I then tried to import it into iPhoto.  iPhoto hangs with "Preparing to Import" the movie.  I have to force quit.  What's going on here?  You would think iPhoto could handle the output from Quicktime.

I just had the same issue. I am using a macbook pro mid 2010, OS 10.8.5, iLife 11.
It was trying to import photos and videos from my sony nex5n which I found that its SD card is fat32 file format. Therefore, it won't show up sometimes and get stuck when I try to import it.
1- So, first thing to secure my data, I launched Windows on bootcamp, and found the SD, copied all files into desktop just in case.
    2- Found this nifty exfat32 from google: https://code.google.com/p/exfat/downloads/detail?name=fuse-exfat-1.0.1.tar.gz&ca n=2&q=
I installed it, restarted and iPhoto didn't stuck anymore. The files showed up. It also showed up on my desktop.
So, with my case it is because of the disk format of my SD card in the camera. I am thinking to reformat my SD to mac format using disk utilty which I will do after I secure my files first. If it didn't work, I will reformat it to fat32 again.
    I hope this helps.
