IPhoto hangs when creating a new album

Hi all,
I am having trouble creating new albums in iPhoto '09. I select File -> New Album, enter an album name, and click [Create]. iPhoto then quickly locks up with the spinning beach ball of death. I have to Force Quit iPhoto. If I then reopen iPhoto and try to create a new album, it hangs again. The only way to create a new album, is to reboot my Mac Pro. After that I can create new albums. However, after my Mac Pro goes to sleeps and wakes up, I can no longer create new albums until I reboot again. Everything else in iPhoto seems to work fine.
The iPhoto library was initially created in iPhoto '08 running Leopard. Now I am using iPhoto '09 under Snow Leopard. I've tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist preference file. I have used Command+Option when starting iPhoto to rebuild the database. Nothing seems to work. I have my iPhoto library in its default location.
Any ideas or suggestions? This is very frustrating.
Thanks!
Steven

Hi all,
I fixed the issue of iPhoto freezing (beach ball of death) issue as well as many other issues. I reinstalled Snow Leopard and reapplied the updates.
Got say that reinstalling Snow Leopard is way easier than reinstalling Windows Vista. I have initial release of both. Apple packs most of its SL updates into one big bundle. While with Vista, Windows Update kept hitting me with 1 to 3 updates a time and then forces a reboot. After a dozen reboots, then it wanted to install Vista SP1. Then more updates and reboots before I got to Vista SP2. And then there were still more updates. BTW, Vista is running in a VMWare Fusion VM.
Thanks,
Steven

  • Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.

Ok, so I have a problem where Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.
I have documented this problem on my blog here:
Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it Rhyous's 127.0.0.1 or ::1
This has my hardware details, etc...
I consider myself an expert at troubleshooting (being in support for over 10 years including time as a Lead Technician doing Windows 2000 support focussing on performance), and have checked quite a few things to try to pinpoint this issue, but I just can't find the cause.
I am asking others if they have seen this issue. I need to know if it is only on my workstation, or if others are seeing it as well.
Have you ever right-clicked, chose new folder and then had to wait 45 seconds for a new folder to appear.
Then the same thing when you try to rename the new folder, a hang of about 45 seconds before the new name take affect.
Anyway, let me know if you have experienced ths.

    Hi,
I suggest you temporarily uninstall the antivirus program to check the issue. You need to make sure that you have the installation file to reinstall it later.
If it does not work, I suggest you also test the issue in Safe Mode and Clean Boot to determine if this is a hardware or a software issue.
    Good luck!

  • IPhoto crashes when creating a new slide show

iPhoto immediately crashes, when I try to create a new slide show.
I have already tried to create a completely new library, but happens just the same: I want to create a new slide show (with only some pictures), and then the program crashes and I must kill it via "force quit".
I also de-installed iPhoto and then installed it again. No change at all. The program chrashes when I try to create a new slide show.
    Any idea what could help?

It looks like there's something in your account that's the culprit.  It could be a preference file other than iPhoto's.  Here's how to test that:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock.  You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
    4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
    A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences  folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
    D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
    8 - reboot.

Have you tried doing this first:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If there are no errors reported then try the routine I suggested rather than trying to expand the existing partition just try to Add a second partition as you have tried before.
If this still gets you nowhere, then I'm afraid you're left with having to repartition from scratch. You'll want to backup the existing files if you don't wish to lose them. I would then do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When the above is completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

  • CS5 apps stall / hang when creating a new doc

Frequently, when I try to open a new document in Photoshop, Illustrator, and sometimes Dreamweaver, the programs hang for a while (several seconds), and sometimes I even get the dreaded beachball, before I can work in them. Here's a typical scenario: go to Photoshop, click Command-N (or File > New), and then the canvas is gray and nothing is active / clickable for several seconds, and then finally a new document will open.
Could this be a font issue? Someone had suggested plugins, but I can't think of any that span all those apps. I have repaired disk permissions, so I don't think it's that.

If you meant workshop 3.0(C++ 4.2), it is EOLed and doesn't work on Solaris 8. I recommend you try the new Compiler - Sun One Studio 7, Compiler Collection. The 'try and buy' download is at: <http://wwws.sun.com/software/sundev/suncc/buy/index.html>
Add compatible flag '-compat=4' that allows the new version of compiler to generate .o's that will link with C++ 4.2 generated .o's, at the cost of not being able to use the new ANSI features.

When creating a new album, why does iphoto 11 separate pictures into untitled albums?  I want all designated photos in the album i created..

I'm guessing you're missing the album in the left hand pane by just a bit and thus creating new albums for each of the photo you're dragging.  Make sure the album is highlighted as in this screenshot (iPhoto 9.4.2) before releasing:
A sure file way to get an album with the photos is to select the photos again and use the File ➙ New Album menu option
and that will produce a new album with the photos that were selected.

    Many thanks Jaz Eilles

Sounds like you have a folder with an album named fred inside of it.  Folders can only hold other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. but not just photos.  So you must be sure to drop the photo directly onto the album titled fred that resides inside that folder otherwise it will create a new album.
So expand the folder so the fred album is visible and drop the new photo onto the album.

When a new album is created it will fill with whatever is in the right hand window,  If you're in the Events or Photos mode it will contain all photos in the library.  Yes, strange behavior.

  • Since upgrating iPhoto to 2.0 (531) I can't to create a new album while sharing the photos

    Hello!
Since upgrading iPhoto to 2.0 (531) I can't create a new album while I'm sharing the photos. There is no button "+" or "create new album" where I want to put them. I can choose between existing albums, one of them is album called "iOS Photos".
    iOS 7.0.3, iPad 4th Gen.

Do you know who I can ask about it?
I hope, someone who uses FB with iPhoto will look into this. YOu probably have already looked at the help page:

  • Something I don´t understand when I create a new album

I know two ways of creating a new album:
1.- I click on the tool I have on the Aperture window (The icon of albums)
    2.- I click on File-New-Album (AltL)
Well, I always create a new album in a Project. The problem is if I do it using the tool of the Aperture window the album is created not empty, but with all the files of that project. But if I do it clicking on the menu, the album is created as I want, that is to say, empty, then I select the images (from the project) that I want to put in that album and drag them in it.
My question is: Why can´t I create an empty album using the tool "New album" that is on the Aperture Window? Or what am I doing wrong?
    Guillermo

The 'create album' button is identical to File>New From Selection>Album (Command-L).
Oddly enough, this gives different behaviour from File>New>Album...
In other words it makes a new Album with the entire Project's-worth of images in it only if you had nothing selected. It's an assumption on the part of the developers - you've asked for a new Album containing the selection, but nothing's selected - do you throw up an error message (like the one when only one Version is selected), or assume that the user wanted everything.
Personally I think Aperture should throw up a dialog box to keep things consistent, but I can see the reasoning behind it. And as long as we've got menu items and keyboard shortcuts for both, I don't really care.

  • Iphoto won't let me create a new album

Iphoto won't let me create a new album, every time I press the "plus" button it just makes a little pinging sound. I may have accidentally deleted the album section and I'm not sure how to get it back.

How about File -> New Album?

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you've edited photos on your iPad and only see the original version when you import them to your computer, the tips in this article may help:

  • Why does PSE 11 organizer crash when I try to create a new album?

I recently purchased PSE 11 to replace PSE 10. When I entered the Organizer, everything worked well until I tried to create a new category under a category that had already been created. After several attempts (and crashes) I rebooted the computer and succeeded in creating the new category. When I then attempted repeatedly to create a new album within the new category, the Organizer again crashed several times. I suspect that rebooting the computer will fix the immediate problem, but this should not occur in the first place and is unacceptable as an ongoing problem.

There is apparently something wrong with the Elements Auto Analyzer. When I ended the auto-analyzer process in Windows Task Manager, I was able to add albums to an existing category without crashing the Organizer. I was also able to add albums in Safe Mode, so there may be a driver conflict or other conflict with one of my other programs.

  • Creating a new album on FaceBook when sharing from Photo app?

With the FaceBook camera app you can create a new album while sharing photos from their Camera app on my iPhone 5.
However, I only can see a way to upload to existing albums while sharing from the iOS 6 Photos app. Is there a way to create a new album while sharing?
    Thanks,
    doug

You need to sync all the photos that you want in one go - only the contents of the most recent sync remain on the iPad (as you've found out). If you want separate folders/albums, then the folders to sync need to be directly off the same parent folder, select that main/parent folder i iTunes, and then chose which of the folders underneath it to sync: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
