IPhoto hangs when I try to empty iPhoto trash.

I had a lot of photos in my iPhoto library. I saved them to an external hard drive, then deleted most of them from  my computer.
Except, they're still somewhere on my computer's hard drive.
When I try to empty the iPhoto trash, the program goes into permanent spinning-beach-ball mode, and the only way out of the program is to force quit. The photos that are in the trash show up only as blank frames.
My question is this: where is iPhoto trash on the hard drive? Can't I just find it and delete its contents without going into the utterly useless iPhoto program? My thought was the iPhoto would be structured like iTunes, so that I'd be able to find & delete as I said. But noooo. Unless I've got iPhoto open, the photos are simply not findable.
Any ideas? Thanks.
The "about" pane identifies this program as iPhoto 09, though that is not one of the choices on the menu offered here.

Deleting the material by hand will corrupt your iPhoto Library - and it'll do the same to your iTunes library as well.
How many items are you trying to trash?

iPhoto quits when I try to empty the iPhoto trash. When I reopen iPhoto, the items are still in the trash.
    1.42 GHz,G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Try the following:
1 - make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library folder
2 - do some edit on the bad photo.
3 - go to the Modified folder in the iPhoto Library folder and find the new modified file.
4 - copy that file to the desktop.
5 - locate the original file in the Originals folder and replace it with the new file from the desktop.
6 - now see if you can delete that file via iPhoto.
If that doesn't work, try deleting the original, modified and data (thumbnail) version of that file. Then rebuild the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
You'll always have the backup version in case these "fixes" mess things up even more.

  • My iPhoto hangs when I try to import video

My iPhoto hangs when I try to import video - I have a mac mini and am on OS X ver. 10.9.2, it started doing this when I upgraded to iPhoto ver 9.5.1
Mac mini (Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), iPhoto 9.5.1

What's the source of the video? Any error messages?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • I just did a software update that was apparently for iPhoto. When I try to open iPhoto it stops at "step 5" and will not go further. what do I do?

I just did a software update that was apparently for iPhoto. When I try to open iPhoto it stops at "step 5" and will not go further. what do I do?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I am getting error code 8003 when I try to empty my trash. Any help?

I am getting error code 8003 when I try to empty my trash. Any help? This happen right after I tried to clear my backup HD.

    Greetings,
If you dragged items from a TimeMachine backup drive to the trash then that is most likely the cause of the issue.  Do not move files from the TimeMachine backup into the trash (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427).
If your backup drive only contains a timemachine backup then you will want to reformat that drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1600
Keep in mind that before you reformat the backup drive that you remove any files you wish to keep to your computer.
    Cheers.

  • I get an error code -8003 when I try to empty the trash

I was about to run TechToolPro to defrag etc my external HD when I decided to reduce the size of the Time Machine file by removing the earliest two or three backups which date back to a year ago or so. I realize the error of my ways now but my thinking was to reduce the time it took to defrag etc.
I had put the files in my trash on the MBP 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 Gb ram running 10.6.8 which at that time had about 11gib of HD space left. This action brought it down to 3.8 Gb left on the HD.
    cannot
Now when I try to empty the HD I get an error code -8003 and the HD space remaining has reduced to about .5 Gb.
    What are my options?
I also have a Super Duper backup.

Did any of the threads that appear in the "More Like This" section to the right help you?

  • I'm getting an error code -8003 when I try to empty my trash.

I recently emptied several old backup files from an external hard drive to the trash folder.  Now when I attempt to empty the trash, I get this message: "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).  What should I do?  I just took the computer and external hard drive to an apple store for genius support a few days ago and the tech fixed a few things.  He advised me to empty the backup files, which is what I'm trying to do.

  • Iphoto crashing when i try to delete my trash - i have 35,000 images in trash

Hi, I have over the years gathered more and more duplicates of images within my Iphoto library. Last year i got a new MacBook Pro and just dragged and dropped 101,000 images that went into on event! annoying as i copied my old library - thats not really the issue. The issue is i just purchase Sweeper that found 35,000 duplicates and moved them to the trash within iphoto - so it did its job - now iphoto will not empty trash can! HELP! I just want to clean up my new MAC!

What is the application you used and the link to thecsupport page?  I have never heard of is Ned web searches come up with major malware under sweeper
In general you need to delete in small batches of 100 or so emptying the iPhoto trash for each batch
Probably the best solution is to start over trashing the bad library, connecting the two systems together and dragging the iPhoto library from the old system to the pictures folder of the new one. Launch iPhoto to convert the library. Purchase and use duplicate annaliator to handle duplicates

  • I get an error message when I try to empty the trash in order to clear up an external hard drive.  I had been using it for time machine, have shifted that to a larger external hard drive, and want to free up the space for photographs.  Any suggestions?

What should I do when I get an error message (error code - 8003) when I'm trying to empty the trash to clear up additional space on an external hard drive?

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.
