IPhoto hangs when selecting trash

Hi there,
iPhoto is hanging when I click the trash button in the menu. Right or left click. Must force-quit to get out. Otherwise works fine.

This did seem to help. I think the actual problem was this: when I upgraded my iPhoto library, it inserted thousands of small thumbnail duplicates into the trash. The trash folder was so big it took a while to read it. Now that I have been able to empty it, iPhoto works fine. Thanks!

My iPhoto hangs when I try to import video - I have a mac mini and am on OS X ver. 10.9.2, it started doing this when I upgraded to iPhoto ver 9.5.1
Mac mini (Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), iPhoto 9.5.1

What's the source of the video? Any error messages?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • Iphoto hangs when attempting to print photo

iphoto hangs when attempting to print photo even after rebuilding library

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • IPhoto hangs when trying to select a book template. I am using 9.1.5 on Lion w/ a new iMac.

In trying to choose a template for a book iPhoto hangs. Is there a maximum number of pictures that can be selected? Or do you just have to use the book that comes up first?

I think there is a confusion here about when iPhoto is quiting. We are not talking about iPhoto quiting for not particular reason here, but only when you preview (or saved as PDF) a project (Card, Calendar or Book).
For Ross and I, this is the only time iPhoto is quitting on us. Otherwise it works pretty well.
I did received a call from Ted, an Apple tech today and we have tried many things to solve the problem by removing some files from the Library/LaunchAgents and Library/LaunchDeamons and this is with no luck. This is what the engineers have said to try. The other choice is to reinstall Lion, but from scratch, meaning to download Lion, install it on an external HD or USB Thumb Drive and re-install everything.
I will try to do this next week and make sure to test out the iPhoto Preview Project before and after each installation of new softwares and updates to find out what is causing the problem.
This is sad that we couldn't find what was causing the problem, because really re-installing everthing was not the thing I had in mind. At the same time I have too much legacy, I did keep the same migration from OS X Tiger and never have started from scratch since then, that's 4 OS ago!

  • IPhoto "hangs" when Loading Library

I'm having an issue with iPhoto, where, when I launch it, the app appears to open, but in the middle, where the photos are normally displayed, it hangs up saying "loading library", with the spinning gray cog wheel.
No photos ever load, yet the program never crashes. It just stays in this state.
I have opened iPhoto on a test users account, although none of my photos were present, but the app opened right up, leaving me thinking it's related to my normal user account.
I have tried trashing the iphoto plist preference from my user preferences folder, but that did nothing. Same thing happens...
iPhoto is version 5.0.4, and I'm running OS 10.4.11
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Jim,
Another test - create a new library in your regular user account and see if it works. Hold the Option key as you launch iPhoto, select "Create Library". Give it a different name so you don't overwrite your current library. Does a new, empty library open? Import some test photos and see if it works. If so...
It sounds like the database in your library is damaged beyond repair. Do you have an up-to-date backup? If not, you can try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It sometimes is successful when iPhoto's rebuild fails. Also, it creates a new library for the rebuild, so if it doesn't work you can just trash the new library with no harm done.
If iPLM can't rebuild the library, then you may have to start over with a new library. You can follow the steps under "Manual Rebuild" in the Apple article referenced above. Before you do, I recommend you read lori_diloreto's post in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1853164. She describes an alternate (better) way to repopulate your library, and she details what you should expect if you follow her instructions.
    Regards.

  • IPhoto hangs when you export photos

Installed OSX 10.9.2 yesterday; now, when I try to export photos from iPhoto, iPhoto hangs. This is the first part of the error message, it goes on for pages:

Anybody have any ideas? This happens when I try a selection of photos or just one.

There seems to be a bug with iPhoto 8.1.2 and Mavericks 10.9.2 on some machines.  Report your problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.  However, since iPhoto is up to 9.5.1 now I doubt if there will be any effort put in by Apple for that version of iPhoto.
You can upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 via the App Store but it will be a paid upgrade.

  • Applications Hang when selecting / attaching a file using Spotlight

    Hi,
Having a problem since upgrading to Snow Leopard with applications 'hanging' when trying to attach a file using Spotlight. I can repeatedly cause the failure in Mail and Safari - and probably others as well - but these two applications I use most often and need to attach files to most often.
When I select "Attach a file", and use Spotlight to find the file to attach, the file dialog box closes and the attachment is apparently made - seconds later the spinning wheel appears and the dock tells me "Application Not Responding."
Any ideas as to how / why this is happening? Help make it stop!
    Thank you,
    Gordon.

    OK Search box
Mine is OK so something is screwy..
In your Finder Prefs > Advanced > When performing a search drop down. Search this Mac seems to be default and the one I have set. Have you got it set to search the current folder or use the previous search instead?
I'd then pull out the com.apple.finder.plist from your user Library > Preferences to the desktop and let finder make a new one. If all is OK trash the old one.
Relaunch Finder by holding down the option key while right clicking Finder icon in the dock. Relaunch will be on the bottom of the context menu.

  • IWeb 08 hangs when selecting Albums

First, all the obigatory items have been performed; trashed preferences, run disk utility and restarted, even safeboot procedure.
When going into edit a web site, the iWeb software hangs whenever selecting in the Albums section, whether it be the home album or subsequent albums.
It is a easily reproducible hang and it is consistent.

The more content you have in an albums page the longer iWeb will take to load it.
Some people put a lot of stuff in an album page and don't consider the fact that this page will take a long time to download from the internet and will probably lock up IE.
The maximum size I would use for an albums page is about 5MB on disk and this would be reduced by optimizing before upload.

  • IPhoto hangs when attempting to import certain CR2 files

    Hi everyone.
After 3 months of owning and using my MacBook, I have finally found that iPhoto isn't a bad software at all, and I want to start using it. So of course the first thing I did was to import some recent photos I made.
By now I have successfully imported JPG and CR2 files from my external FAT32 HDD. But there are some CR2 files that make iPhoto hang: Actually not the whole application hangs, but only the import section (it is still possible to browse albums etc). clicking the "Stop" button won't change a thing, despite the text "stopping..." underneath the progress bar.
A friend of mine tried to import one of the regarding CR2 files, and it worked on his PowerBook G4 - same software versions.
Help. I don't know what to do. Been searching for a solution for days. Thanks in advance for every hint.
    MacBook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPhoto 6.0.5 (316); Camera: Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT

Ah - sorry, it's hard to gauge what level of expertise people have and probably safer to underestimate than overestimate.
So any messages in Console when iPhoto hangs? Sometimes those are human-readable and offer clues.
What about opening the file using QuickTime? Does that work?
It's possible you ran into an actual bug, but it's hard to tell without the files. If you manage to isolate the exact files that cause the hang, you could try other things, like import them to a newly created library (option-launch iPhoto just in case you didn't know)
You could also dig through the EXIF data that Preview shows (Cmd-I) and see if those files have anything in common, like a bogus value for aperture or focal length or something. I know a friend complained about photos taken by the manual Lensbaby lenses, but I don't know if that has been addressed in recent updates.

  • IPhoto hangs when I try to empty iPhoto trash.

I had a lot of photos in my iPhoto library. I saved them to an external hard drive, then deleted most of them from  my computer.
Except, they're still somewhere on my computer's hard drive.
When I try to empty the iPhoto trash, the program goes into permanent spinning-beach-ball mode, and the only way out of the program is to force quit. The photos that are in the trash show up only as blank frames.
My question is this: where is iPhoto trash on the hard drive? Can't I just find it and delete its contents without going into the utterly useless iPhoto program? My thought was the iPhoto would be structured like iTunes, so that I'd be able to find & delete as I said. But noooo. Unless I've got iPhoto open, the photos are simply not findable.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
The "about" pane identifies this program as iPhoto 09, though that is not one of the choices on the menu offered here.

Deleting the material by hand will corrupt your iPhoto Library - and it'll do the same to your iTunes library as well.
How many items are you trying to trash?

  • IPhoto hangs when importing photos

When I try to import photos (e.g. from Yahoo Photos), iPhoto tells me that it's importing 1 photo, then hangs and does not complete the import. When I force quit out of iPhoto, the imported photo then shows up. I've tried the BatChmod program and verified the disk with Disk Utility, and the problem still keeps occurring. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution? Thank you very much.

    Colleen:
What versions of iPhoto and Quicktime are you running? They should be 6.0.6 and 7.1.6 respectively. Try a couple of fixes:
1 - run the BatChmod on the file before importing it.
2 - download the "Embed sRGB Profile-Applescript" application, unzip and place on your Desktop. Then drop the files onto it before importing into iPhoto. See if that will let the photos get imported.
If neither of those help create a new temporary test library (launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, opt to create a new library) and give it a unique name so you can easily identify it from your original library.
If that library can import correctly then the original library is the culprit. The next thing to try is to launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If still no luck, log into another account on your iMac and try importing those photos into a library there. It it works there then it's your account thats the problem. You can do the following to see if one of your other preference files is causing the problem:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
Sorry if this is such a long winded response. Just trying to cover all options in one response. Good luck.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto hangs when creating a new album

    Hi all,
I am having trouble creating new albums in iPhoto '09. I select File -> New Album, enter an album name, and click [Create]. iPhoto then quickly locks up with the spinning beach ball of death. I have to Force Quit iPhoto. If I then reopen iPhoto and try to create a new album, it hangs again. The only way to create a new album, is to reboot my Mac Pro. After that I can create new albums. However, after my Mac Pro goes to sleeps and wakes up, I can no longer create new albums until I reboot again. Everything else in iPhoto seems to work fine.
The iPhoto library was initially created in iPhoto '08 running Leopard. Now I am using iPhoto '09 under Snow Leopard. I've tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist preference file. I have used Command+Option when starting iPhoto to rebuild the database. Nothing seems to work. I have my iPhoto library in its default location.
Any ideas or suggestions? This is very frustrating.
    Thanks!
    Steven

    Hi all,
I fixed the issue of iPhoto freezing (beach ball of death) issue as well as many other issues. I reinstalled Snow Leopard and reapplied the updates.
Got say that reinstalling Snow Leopard is way easier than reinstalling Windows Vista. I have initial release of both. Apple packs most of its SL updates into one big bundle. While with Vista, Windows Update kept hitting me with 1 to 3 updates a time and then forces a reboot. After a dozen reboots, then it wanted to install Vista SP1. Then more updates and reboots before I got to Vista SP2. And then there were still more updates. BTW, Vista is running in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Thanks,
