IPhoto has changed image import format
Hi everyone,
iPhoto used to import all my photos from my iPhone as .jpeg files. For some unknown reason it now imports them as .png files. How do I change it so they import as .jpeg files? I've looked through all the setting with no success.
I understand .png files may be of higher quality but the convenience of jpeg far outweighs any image quality loss.
Thanks for your help
Regards
Mick
Hi guys, thanks for your answers, but a brief reply to hopefully get some further assistance:
when I view the photos that are on my iPhone via iPhoto they are .jpeg files. I have had a look at photos I have imported last month with iPhoto and and they are saved as .jpeg on my computer. However, for some reason now, when I import them, they are saved as .png files.
Keith, I don't think it is an iPhone setting as they are stored on my phone as .jpeg files, is there a setting somewhere on the phone that allows you to change what format files are downloaded as?
Thanks for your help
Mick

No. iTunes Store music downloads always come as AAC, except for podcast episodes, which are in the format chosen by their creator.

IPhoto has changed the creation dates to all of my photos
I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, my first computer since my iMac circa 2005. I've successfully transfered all of my photos to the new computer, but iPhoto has changed the creation dates of every file, so they're no longer in chronological order. I've used DVDs and Dropbox, I've exported the files, copied the data files from the hard drive, everything, but the result is still the same. I contemplated changing each file manually, but I have over 3,000 photos. Has anyone had this problem? Is there a way I can restore the correct dates?
Hi Keith,
Yes, it's date that the photo was taken that has been changed. When I look at the "photo info" of each individual photo, the "original date" is correct, but the transferred photos on my new computer always change to a 2007 date, despite the fact that the photos were taken as early as 2002.
Does this make more sense?

Edit background in iPhoto has changed from white to black
Hello
A friend of mine used to do all her editing in iPhoto '08 and has now got iPhoto '09. iPhoto '09 has a black background for editing pictures whilst iPhoto '08 had a white one, this change in background completely ruins her way of working as it's essential she has a white background to compare her image to while she is working on it.
Is the only solution to chuck out '09 and continue working with '08? I've spent much time searching on Google for an answer, I didn't believe they would have changed this without making it a preference or something.
Thanks in advance for your time and help
BenIt is what it is what it is.:( Submit a feature request to Apple to allow users set the edit background color as well as the thumbnail background color via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
To go back to iPhoto 08 you will need to start over from scratch. To to so launch iPhoto 08 with the Option key depressed and select new library from the next window.
Next, open the old iPhoto 09 library package in the Finder as follows:
Drag the Originals folder from that library into the open iPhoto 08 window to import all of the original files into the new 08 library. -
IPhoto/email changing photo file format?
I use an HP digital camera exclusively. All my photos in iPhoto state that they are in .jpeg format. Occasionally photos sent via email to my daughter-in-law arrive in a .mime format which she cannot open on her Windows unit. Does anyone know if the error is created on my end by either iPhoto or email, or is it happening on her end. Quite frustrating to her. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
The error is caused by her ISP (or email software).
I'll bet she still uses AOL.
Try "zipping" the file first:
Drag the image from iPhoto Library to your Desktop.
Using the Finder (under the File menu) choose to
"Make Archive of..." to change the file from blah.jpg
to blah.jpg.zip and send it as a test.
Worked like a charm! You were right on both counts with AOL being in use. Thanks for your help.

IPhoto has changed the order of my events
About a month ago, I opened iPhoto to review some of my photos and it "quit unexpectedly". When I reopened it, all of my events were in a completely different order, and there was a newly created folder marked "recovered", but all the photos were just empty squares. I had gone to "view" and under "sort events", it is still set to "manually". The events are in no particular order (not by date or title), but they are not set up like I had them either. I have over 18,000 photos and 120+ events, so I spent an hour reorganizing them so they were back the way I wanted them. Today, the same thing happened again, and the photo events are all mixed up again. I have also noticed that my iPhoto program is running slower and slower. I have checked for updates and there are none. I am running iPhoto '11, 9.4.2 - any suggestions?
Okay, iPhoto "quit unexpectedly" a few minutes ago, and I was able to copy the report here. I know it's more than you requested, but too much rather than too little......

IPhoto has changed its organization
Three days ago iphotos decided not to operate the way it had been since I bought it.
Used to be, create my Events.and when I wanted to go through them to edit.I w ould click on the particular event photo, and the entire folder would open so I could see all the photos.
Now, when I click on Events, the middle photo comes up, and I cannot get the upper scroll or the others to show unless I use the scroll on the right hand side, which is a PITA....it's slower as well.
Another oddity is when I go onto a Windows site..if I reply to a post on a forum, I have a large( or small) boxed outline that follows my scroll.it doesn't leave.. It also shows up on Desktop.
Thanks for you time.
GailThanks Td.
I am most likely not being very specific..will attempt it again...
I have about 12,000 photos in iPhoto now, all of them are i the Events. They are all named and I had them sorted by date taken.
Four days ago, I would be able to go to iPhoto, click on Events, and all of the headers and photos would show up . Al I would need to do if I wanted to edit of re look at the photos was double click on the folder; ;e" Flowers", and the entire folder would open so I could see each photo individually..while all still on the same page.
Now, when I go to Events, and go to open an individual named folder, it opens, but not entirely. It automatically goes to the middle photo instead of opening the entire thing. And then, to scan over each photo, now I have to use the slider, which I didn't have to before.
Lol.does this make sense.? I do alot of editing and then copy and paste for a photo forum, and it does slow things down..I use PhotoBucket as my photo share site and it works fine with Mac, or at least seems to?
The browser is Google, without all the bells and whistles.
Thanks again. -
Editing in External Editor Has Changed
Editing with an external editor in iPhoto has changed. If, when using an external editor like Photoshop. Pixelmator or Acorn, a second copy is immediately created in the Versions folder (formally Modified) of iPhoto and is used for the editing ending up with two copies of the photo, the original and edited.
If the edit creates layers, like adding text with PS or Pixelmator, the file must be flattened before saving. Otherwise the Save To navigation window appears with the Master/Originals folder as the default location. If saved there the copy that was first created remains just that, a copy of the original and the layered file is lost to iPhoto in the Masters folder. Bottom line, flatten the image before saving if the editor presents a Save to window.
Additional edits by the external editor do not create another copy but are applied to the first edited copy. Therefore, any edit with an external will result in the two copies being displayed in iPhoto side by side.
Previously, flattening the image and saving as a jpg would have the modified version replace the original as the displayed version. just like when edited by iPhoto. No longer true with iPhoto 11.
OTOK, this whole thing is a bug I believe. Listen to this. I open a photo in CS5 to edit it. iPhoto makes a copy. I finish editing my photo in CS5, then save. The changes take place in iPhoto like you'd expect. Now there are the two photos in iPhoto. The edited and the unedited. Now I select the edited photo and choose "Revert to Original" from iPhoto menu, and iPhoto warns me like always, "are you sure you want to revert?" I click "Revert" and nothing. It doesn't revert to the original photo.
So if I were to delete the "extra" photo, I've now got no backup of that photo! I think iPhoto is just "showing" us the original backups on accident now. If this is how they intend it to be now, then they sure better warn people before everyone starts deleting their backup copies of their photos. This is crazy. -
Rebuilding iPhoto library changes .mov files to raw
I rebuilt my iPhoto library and since then any .mov files (specifically MJPEG) were changed to RAW in the info panel. The files haven't been changed, but if you try to view them, they small thumbnails are intact, but expanded are a triangular icon with an exclamation point. If I locate the original file and reimport it, it fixes the problem for that individual problem, but this is a tedious solution. MP4 files and H264 files were not affected. I have not been able to locate any information for a solution. Is there a way to force iphoto to change the file format so that it properly recognize that it is a video file, not an image file?
Snow Leopard, iPhoto 9.1.5Why do you think they've become Raw?
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Is iPhoto changing my .mov format after importing from iPad?
Or is iTunes changing it while importing?
It seems iPhoto is making movies incompatible with iPad.
My iPad sees and plays my .mov videos directly taken by my canon sd 1400 is. They play in the photos app of my ipad after using the camera kit, and it's great for sharing with friends during a vacation.
The bad news is after ipad uploads these videos and photos to my mac's iPhoto, iPhoto is changing the format (I am guessing) so that the videos can not be uploaded back to the ipad in an album. Why? How can I change or fix this?
I am hoping someone points me to a magic setting in iPhoto that says, "Check this box if you don't want your videos broken with iPad"
ipad 32GB, 3G
Apple Camera Kit
Canon SD1400 IS
iPhoto 11
iMac Intel Core Duo
OSX 10.6.5The iTunes app on your computer is very strict as to importing videos to the iPad.
http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
Even if your video does follow the above specs. Not all h.264 are created equally to the h.264 standards.
The Camera Connection Kit is not as strict.
I can import videos from my Flip Mino HD camera when using the Camera Connection Kit. When trying to import the same video using iTunes I get the message,'file format no supported.'
The previous iOS 3.x did not support importing Flip videos when using the Camera Connection Kit. I was happy to find that the iOS 4.2.1 upgrade did!!! Now I don't have to buy a new video camera!!!
To answer you question... Use the Camera Connection Kit. It's better than nothing... -
trying to import photos and copy as DNG. Nothing will upload though. Permissions are all accurate, saving to the right profile, etc. Nothing has changed on my computer but it will not let me import new pictures. Also, updated the software and some images say "preview cannot be seen" and some don't. And when I try to import and I hit "new photos" it's all the photos on my card. My brain is about to explode.
It said something similar where the thumbnails were supposed to be.
Just got the newest edition of LR, 4.4
4.4 is not the newest edition of LR
We don't want to know that it said "something similar", we want to know the exact wording. In fact, you ought to state the exact problem you are having, in detail, instead of saying you are having the same problem. -
IPhoto has stopped loading images
I'm on a photography course - uploading images is critical. Two things; For some reason iPhoto has stopped recognising my images. Canon Image Browser still recognises them and uploads but iPhot claims they are unreadable. What has changed?
Also, some thumb nails won't happen. Is the image still on my HD, if so where and how do I find it. Or is it lost forever?
Small words please as I'm struggling to get to grips with Mac!
CheersWhat camera(s) are you using, and are you using RAW or jpeg format?
Usually a photography course requires you to start using RAW if they're teaching post-processing (i.e modification after the picture is on your computer) and I'm thinking maybe you're using a camera whose RAW files are not supported?
The Canon image browser doesn't use the built-in OS support so it would be able to see the files. But if you're using a very old or a very new camera, chances are it has a RAW file type that the OS doesn't support. JPEGS from the same camera are usually always supported since that format is a standard. -
RAW image import (problem in iphoto and aperture)
either the problem is me (my understanding of what I am trying to do) or something has gone awry with both aperture and iphoto...
when importing RAW images (canon 40d camera) many of which are shot in monochrome and show up as such on the camera (they even show up in b/w on the preview import in iphoto and aperture) ALL images once imported to both iphoto and aperture are in full color. This was not the case on two previous imports (shots taken in b/w RAW imported as b/w RAW images) but now seems to happen every time. I have restarted computed, reimported, checked all settings and nothing is working.
I am missing something, yes? Thanks for any help.no ... you will have to export it as a .tiff or .jpeg ...
and then import into aperture ...
although aperture does have a great monochrome tool worth checking out ...
something to consider is to shoot your monochromes in RAW+JPG and import into aperture ...
see here for working with RAW+JPG:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=380111&tstart=0
when stacked you will have the B&W from in camera and the colour RAW file ... tweak the monochrome mixer until the RAW is to your liking ... you can use the B&W JPG for a baseline ... -
IPhoto "metadata changes" and management with possible import to Aperture 2
Sorry for the length of this but I am trying to get to figure out which will be the best product for me without having to waste more time and money. I may already have the best for what I want/need but I am not too terribly satisfied with it in its current configuration, although within itself it is great.
I currently have iPhoto '09 and, as I say, like its ease of use, etc. A feature I have really come to enjoy is the geotagging feature. But one thing that I DO NOT LIKE is how the information is not incorporated into the metadata of the file permanently, such as when I change the date or name of an image. It becomes a pain when I want to export a file for use outside of iPhoto, such as Photoshop, or if I want to email it using my Gmail account.
Questions:
1. Is there a way to have the actual image metadata permanently changed if I have renamed the image, added gps information, or changed the date/time an image was taken? If so, how?
2. Is there a way to export the information and have the information stick?
3. (An Aperture question) I do not have Aperture now but I'm thinking of purchasing it because I understand (may be dead wrong here) that Aperture can do what I need. For those who know, can it do it? If so, is there a way to get my images from iPhoto into Aperture with all of the information attached (name, description, date/time, gps, etc) seamlessly or will I be forced to redo everything?
4. (Another Aperture question) Is Aperture good for organization in and of itself? In other words, can it completely replace iPhoto while still allowing me to enjoy all of the features I currently have (seeing geotags on maps, searching with keywords, etc)?
Do you have other advice for me? If Aperture won't work or you don't like it for some reason, what to you prefer/recommend that will do what I need? Can you provide links to anything that may be helpful?
Thanks for your help and have a wonderful weekend!!!1. Is there a way to have the actual image metadata permanently changed if I have renamed the image, added gps information, or changed the date/time an image was taken? If so, how?
You can rename an image but that’s not the same as renaming a File. Iphoto renames the image, and using the File -> Export command that title can be written to the IPTC data of the file. Also, if you choose you can use the Title as a Filename using the same Export command. You can also write the gps data using that route too. As for changing the date and time, if you use the Adjust Date and Time command you can opt to have that written to the actual file.
2. Is there a way to export the information and have the information stick?
See above. What there is no way of doing is writing that data to the files inside iPhoto - and no need to.
Aperture works the same way - metadata is stored in the DB, not written to the file unless you choose to on export. It too is a database application. You can seamlessly move the data from iPhoto to Aperture using the ‘Import iPhoto Library command’. You can download a trial of Aperture, and I recommend you do.
4. (Another Aperture question) Is Aperture good for organization in and of itself? In other words, can it completely replace iPhoto while still allowing me to enjoy all of the features I currently have (seeing geotags on maps, searching with keywords, etc)?
Aperture is much more powerful - and complex - than iPhoto. It’s geared for the Professional shooting RAW. I can completely replace iPhoto bar some things: there’s no way currently to tag gps data in Aperture, very limited slideshows and no concept of Faces. I strongly urge you to download the trial. There’s a learning curve there.

Look of photos change when import from D40 into iPhoto 6
I'm using iPhoto 6 and have a Nikon D40. I'm having a problem when I import my photos -- the image quality changes when they go from the camera into iPhoto. The images look more contrast-y, more saturated. I mean, the reds and oranges are so intense it's crazy. They definitely did not look like that when I viewed them in the camera LCD.
I've tried checking in preferences, but can't seem to find anything that would alter the images during transfer. Would this be a camera problem? Anyone using iPhoto 6 have the same problem as I am with their D40?
Any help would be much appreciated!I am having the same exact problem... iPhoto 6 and Nikon D40. If I import the photos to a folder first, then import from the folder to iPhoto, I can open the iPhoto version and then open the folder version using Preview, just by clicking on the original. I then compare the two side-by-side on the computer screen. The original always looks fine in Preview, so it is clearly a problem with iPhoto over-saturating the photos. I have no solution, but only this observation.
