IPhoto has disappeard; Pictures gone!
I already looked through the topic, "iPhoto Failure," but the 3 fixes did not work for me. I can see some details of my iPhoto library when I launch iPhoto Library Manager (# of pictures, Album names, etc) but I cannot get to it. The icon on my dock has a transparent question mark, and the icon in finder/applications is gone. When I try to launch iPhoto via the manager, it gives me this Error Message:
Unable to launch iPhoto: (null) could not be launched because an error occured (* -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value (key: _NSTaskExecutablePath))
Can someone help me? I have so many photos I was not able to back-up before the program disappeared, and it's very upsetting. I'm in the middle of an anniversary movie, but I can't finish it without these photos/videos
Any advice is much appreciated!
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash) (You can skip this step).
2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

Iphoto 9.6 Pictures Gone
I recently upgraded to Iphoto 9.6 on Yosemite. When I open Iphoto all my pictures are gone. When I look in "finder" I can see the file called "Iphoto library" and it still shows that I have 18GB of photos in that file. However when I try to import the file to Iphoto or simply try to open it nothing happens. Iphoto simply opens and still my photos are not displayed.
I am thinking iphoto did not properly upgrade the photos when I updated the software. Someone please help!I believe I updated from the original iPhoto version that came with the Mac Pro 5 years ago.
Can you check that by looking at a backup of the old iPhoto application?
If you upgraded from iPhoto '08 - version 7.1.2 or earlier, your iPhoto library needs be prepared for the update by running the iPhoto Library Upgrader, see the link for this document:
iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
If your iphoto was newer, try the Library First Aid options, that photosb189 mentioned, but be sure to make a backup of your iPhoto library first. -
IPhoto has duplicate pictures when browsing iPhone photos
It's really strange. I plug in my iPhone and iPhoto displays duplicate of all photos, but my iPhone continues to only have 1 copy.
I kept trying to upload all 5,700 photos but iPhoto kept freezing on me. I re-opened it to try again and again then I noticed the dupes.Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You don't need to burrow into the iPhoto Library package via the Finder to find photos for use outside iPhoto. Read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It's the best explanation of how to do what you want available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
ALL pictures in iPhoto *and* PhotoBooth are gone :( please help
Hello,
I have a bit of a dilema here. On 6-27-07 (actually 6-28 cause it was after midnight), my daughter and I were taking pictures in photobooth. I selected the iPhoto icon from the PhotoBooth picture to send a copy of those pictures to iPhoto.
PhotoBooth froze up after doing several of them and wouldn't work. I am trying to remember from memory (which is swiss cheese from the MS), but I think I had to do a hard shut down. When I tried to go to iPhoto, it acted like it was my 1st time using it and it began asking me questions as if I was setting it up for the 1st time. ALL pictures are GONE. Everything in iPhoto and PhotoBooth are GONE I don't know what I did or how (if I can) to fix it.
Can anyone possibly help me? Lots of precious memories gone. I was recently going to read how to do a back-up right before this happened. Now I wish I hadn't gone to sleep that night until I learned how to do it and actually did make a back-up
My husband called Apple and they told him to do something and now that has created approximately 3 copies of random pics and not all of them, or I would just delete the extras. My husband may have done something wrong to have it make extra copies of the pictures it has now, I don't know.
My husband didn't seem like he was happy with the help that he was getting at the time. So, I found my way here again!!! I have been to the discussions boards once before, but I forgot how to get here (serious swiss cheese memory from MS). I have to save ALL websites that I like to my favorites or I should say 'Bookmarks' or I will probably never find it again. <embarassed>
**I will tell you a little about me and the use of my mac....... I have Multiple Sclerosis so my husband purchased the lap top to make it easier for me to get online and not be stuck to one chair which makes me hurt bad. I am new to Mac and have always used a PC.
Anyway, when we purchased it we explained that I would mainly be using it for Internet use and for the pictures that I take (I am disabled, so that is about all I can do but I thoroughly enjoy it), which happens to be more than the average person since I have a new Grandson
Any help that anyone can give me, I would TRULY APPRECIATE!!!!!!
Thanks,
New2HimBrenda,
You're quite welcome.
That does sound like your original library. It makes sense to me; your husband was probably told to drag it to the Desktop by the Apple help desk person. Look inside your Pictures folder for the other two iPhoto Library folders. If you don't find them there, do another Finder Search. Click once on a found item in the Search window to see its path at the bottom of that window. That should help you locate those folders.
After you find and rename or delete the other libraries, you will be ready to create a new library. (You might not want to delete those other folders yet - in case some photos are missing from your main library. But if you are sure that nothing in them is original, go ahead and Trash them to free up the space.)
To create a new library, Option-launch iPhoto and click "Create Library." By default it will be located in your Pictures folder and named "iPhoto Library." You can change the name if you want - say, "iPhoto Library New" before you click "Save." A new, empty library will open. Drag the right corner of the window up so that it fills only about half of your screen. Do iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced and make sure that there IS a check in the boxes beside "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to library" and "Add ColorSync Profile".
On the other half of your screen, open a Finder window. Set it to column view and navigate this path: Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Originals/ 2007/ (Film Roll folders). It is these Film Roll folders that contain your photos. Select all of the Roll folders and drag them as a group over the iPhoto window until the cursor shows you a green plus symbol. Drop them in the main viewing area of the iPhoto window. iPhoto will indicate to you that it is importing. A film roll will be created for each folder that you dragged. [Tip: if you want an Album to represent each film roll, then drag them to the Source Pane (left column) instead of the main viewing window. This will create an Album and a film roll, both with the same name as the imported folder.]
I have read that the film roll date can be wrong after importing, so you may want to check the dates as you go. Open the Info Pane in the lower left corner of the iPhoto window (click the little i). When you select a Roll, its info will display in the Info Pane. You can edit the Roll's title and date, if you wish.
When the 2007 rolls have all been imported, switch to the Originals/ 2006 folder, select the roll folders, and drag to your iPhoto window. Repeat for each year in your Desktop library.
This will recover your Original, unedited photos in the same film rolls as before. What cannot be saved is your Albums, Slideshows, Books, titles, keywords, ratings, and other metadata. These were contained in the database file that was damaged during the iPhoto hang or subsequent hard shut down.
If you had spent significant time editing your photos, then you may want to have a look in Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Modified to see if you wish to save any of the edited versions. There is no way to reconnect the edits with their Originals; that info was also stored in the database file. But if you want to import them to your library you may. Be aware that this will cause the appearance of duplication, much like you had in the library your husband created. If you can part with your edited versions, then it is much easier to discard them. (If not, be selective.)
I'll look forward to hearing your progress. Regards,

Hi.
iphoto 9.2.1 on iMac Leopard "scrapbook theme" not working correctly.
The opening slide has 2 pictures; the bottom one can barely be seen and probably shouldn't be there.
It works fine in LION "only 1 image" on opening slide.
All updated. Any suggestions

Sometimes after creating an event folder on iPhoto, all my pictures in that event will be gone the next time I open iPhoto. Why is this happening? Is there a way to retrieve the missing photos?
Most events I make on iphoto will still be there the next time I open iPhoto, while other event FOLDERS will be there, but pictures in it gone. What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

IPhoto has gone cadywompus...
So here I am on a Saturday night looking at my photos and realized that iPhoto has gone completely cadywopmus. Viewing photos in iPhoto everything looks fine. Looking at my photos using Finder I now see, only in a few folders, that there are up to 5 duplicates of many of the photos. They all have the file name IMGXXXX1, IMGXXX2, etc. (all my photos typically have the IMG_XXXX.JPG). I did not create these, and in some cases they were dud photos that I have stricken from iPhoto altogether. Why then has iPhoto duplicated these photos? Again, it’s only in a few folders that I just looked at randomly. Any thoughts?
Any thoughts?<<<</div>
Yup. I'm thinking that you used the finder to muck around with the innards of the library folder. -
My iPhoto has creashed and will not load up my pictures and iTunes can not find my picture either. Why?
Tell us more please - so it is hard to guess what might have happened.
What is your iPhoto version and your MacOS X version?
What happened directly, before you could no longer open your iPhoto library?
Did you install or upgrade software?
Did you import new photos to your iPhoto library?
Are other programs also behaving buggie?
Did you move your iPhoto library to a new harddisk?
Did you run other programs, that might have changes the iPhoto library?
How full is your harddrisk? Could it be, that you are running out of disk space?
Anything at all, that could give us a clue ...

iPhoto has dissappeared off my laptop. Says it is installed, but cant find it. All photos gone
Do a Spotlight for "iPhoto.app" and see what yo get. If that fails download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "iPhoto.app" in the file name.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If the application is hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it. -
IPhoto has hidden my iPhoto Library- photos there, but can't locate LIBRARY
*Here's a bit of a strange one!* I have iPhoto 7.1 (not yet 7.1.1) on my PowerBook G4-12" and last week I imported 6700 photos from my Kodak EasyShare Collection (which had a total of 16,000+) - and it all worked great.
*I setup about 20 EVENTS-*- some with 4 photos-- some with 800! I transferred 6098 photos to my iPod Touch (16gb) and SUPER!! +(OK the iTouch puts the first dated photo in each event as the KEY photo-- doesn't accept the "KEY PHOTO" I assigned in iPhoto-- but otherwise super).+
*OK SO TODAY:* I have 132 new photos to import from my digital camera. _FORGOT TO SAY THIS:_ The 29 gb iPhoto Library is located on an *external 48 gb HD (LaCie 300 gb with 3 partitions - on the 48 gb partition).*
So I imported the photos directly to iPhoto and all the events are gone and just the new 132 photos (1 event).
WHAT?!?!?!!!!!!!!!
So I then plug-in the HD to my MacBook and opent iPhoto 7.1.1 with the option key down and choose the iPhoto Library on the External HD and all is there, all OK-- Whew!
I now open iPhoto 7.1 on the PBG4 and the photos are there!! - *but the external HD is not connected!!* Somehow iPhoto has transferred them to the internal 100gb HD on the PBG4-- BUT WHERE?!?!? Even with a SPOTLIGHT or EASY FIND search, _I cannot locate the iPhoto Library!!!_ I even deleted the photos that were similar in the Kodak EasyShare folder thinking it was referencing them, but nope-- it still opened with 132 photos and where they are located, I have no idea!
I would like to transfer these 132 photos to the MAIN iPhoto Library on the 48gb HD - but I don't know where they are! (I've gone to where it should be-- in Users/Steve/Pictures....)
But I see them!
Can I DELETE this single event? But what then, is that "invisible Library" still about?
At this time, I really don't want to connect the HD to the PBG4 since I don't want to risk it corrupting the 6700 photos in that Library.
(((Of course I'll backup that iPhoto Library first-- so if I "wreck" one, I'll have a backup))); and of course I have the photos themselves via the wonderful Kodak EasyShare program which plays videos in slide shows (but without "EVENTS" or the easy ability to transfer to the iTouch)--
Thanks for any comments!
Steve-- Sunday 3 February 2008Stephen:
Do a search on the PB for a file titles "Library6.iPhoto". Every library has one and you can find the library by finding that file. Once you find the library open it like this and drag out the Originals folder to the desktop.
Now connect the external HD to the PB, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to Find Library and open the one on the external HD. Now you can drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window to get those 132 photos into that library. When done delete the library and originals folder from the PB.
What may have happened is that iPhoto was launched with the external HD disconnected and, not finding the library, created a new one. Using iPhoto Library Manager to manage and open your library will avoid that problem as it will tell you that the library is not available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. Hi. My iPhoto has "quit unexpectedly" and won't reopen (despite many desperate attempts). I am worried about losing my photos as I haven't backed up for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased 2 iPhone 5's the first day they came out. Black 64gb for myself and white 32gb for my wife. She is having somewhat the same issues as you have. Wifi is weak and keeps dropping the signal, and also her phone almost never has LTE. And we are in a very strong Verizon LTE area in north Los Angeles county. My phone has never had any signal issues, wifi or LTE. I have been researching the issue to no avail. I though maybe the white with the brushed alluminum may cause signal issues, but haven't found anything on that and posts about the black one haven't problems blew that theory up.
I have also changed the SIM card and the phone itself and still the same problem. I saw a post about someone getting their phone swapped out and the apple rep told him not to restore the phone, but to just set it up as new. I have yet to try it, gonna try this weekend.. But it makes sense! I, like you have 6 apple devices (2 iPhone 5's, 2 iPhone 4's apple tv3, and the ipad3) and have no issues running all my devices via router.
So I am thinking about the history of the restores and backups and my wife is the only one that went from the 4 to the 5.. Every other device was setup as new. So my theory is that he iphone 5 has issues when you restore from previous backups.. Maybe something a little different from the backups of the previous models create issues in the iPhone 5's?
Like I said, I'm going to give it a shot this weekend and see what happens. If you get a chance to try this before, please let me know if it works and if I try before you I will update you.
Good luck and hopefully we can get these wonderful phones working like they should!

Iphoto '08 database completely gone (including Originals folder)
My daughter was using Openoffice when her desktop background suddenly reverted to the default "blue burst" instead of a picture she selected from her iPhoto library. She opened iPhoto and all photos were gone. I looked in the iPhoto library and the Data, Originals, and Modified sub-folders do not exist. The AlbumData.xml file is basically empty (size 4kb).
It's as if iPhoto has completely wiped/reset it's database.
If this is the case, is that database dangling somewhere in the file system? Or are we out of luck?
And no, we do not have a backup - <begin rant> we have several TB of RAID NAS backup storage, used for backup of the other 4 (PC) machines in the house, but I have not figured out how to back up from a Mac. Timemachine does not work on NAS storage, it seems, and the Mac philosophy of "do-the-thinking-for-the-user" means that DIY backup is hard to figure out.<end rant>Yes it is normal behavior. Those few clicks can really do lots of damage. Remember iPhoto is a database and for a database to work correctly it needs to know exactly where all the files it needs are. If one of these files gets misplaced or move the database has problems. People messing around in the finder is one of the mail reasons why Apple in Iphoto8 changed what consumers can see in the files. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Old Toad's and TD's Standard Warning should be headed: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos. You can find out more info from this older discussion
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9040586#9040586
You also might want to check out Old Toad's software. He has some great ones, including his software that makes a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. That way if problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back.
Good luck

Iphoto has lost connection with its folder
Hello,
One day I turned on my mac, opened iPhoto and found it empty. I've read various threads and know not to be alarmed as I can see the folder of my pics is still there.
I am however having trouble re-connecting iPhoto to this folder. In the past iPhoto has sorted the folder into numerous sub-folders accredited to the year in which the photos were taken. I cannot connect to the main folder that will include these sub-folders. It always wants me to connect iphoto to a folder with only pics in and not a folder with other folders inside.
Am I going to have to go through the laborious business of moving all my photos into a single folder that will then communiacate with iphoto?
Thanks.See if you can rebuild your library with iPhoto Library Manager 3.
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto 8.1.2 and later or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
