IPhoto has gone cadywompus...
So here I am on a Saturday night looking at my photos and realized that iPhoto has gone completely cadywopmus. Viewing photos in iPhoto everything looks fine. Looking at my photos using Finder I now see, only in a few folders, that there are up to 5 duplicates of many of the photos. They all have the file name IMGXXXX1, IMGXXX2, etc. (all my photos typically have the IMG_XXXX.JPG). I did not create these, and in some cases they were dud photos that I have stricken from iPhoto altogether. Why then has iPhoto duplicated these photos? Again, it’s only in a few folders that I just looked at randomly. Any thoughts?
Any thoughts?<<<</div>
Yup. I'm thinking that you used the finder to muck around with the innards of the library folder.

HT4906 My hard drive replaced and my iPhoto has gone!
Hello All,
My 16 month old Mac Book Pro's hard drive has failed so I have had it replaced. I had iphoto on my mac from when I purchased it but now it has gone (along with my mac office) and all my photos too :-( Truly gutted. Is there anything i can do to get iphoto back or will I need to purchase it now?
Dont think its right I should have to now buy it?
Thanks,What is the operating system you originally had on your Mac, when you bought it? And what was the iPhoto version you last used?
If you already upgraded to MacOS X Mavericks and have been running iPhoto '11, version 9.5.1, you can download iPhoto again from the AppStore. Sign into the AppStore with the AppleID you used, when you set up your mac initially and open the "Purchased" tab, as described in this Support Document:
OS X: About OS X Recovery
Scroll down to the middle of the page:
Restoring iLife applications after Internet Restore of OS X
If your computer came with OS X Lion or later and you erase your hard disk and install OS X, you can download iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand from the Mac App Store.
After installation, start (up) from OS X.
Choose App Store from the Apple menu.
Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted.
Click Purchases.
If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.
Applications you bought from the AppStore can be restored by downloading them from the Purchased tab.
To restore your iPhoto library and other applications, you need to restore from your backup - a Time Machine Backup for example, or a bootable clone of your drive. -
Hi there
I have a new Imac and I had about 950 photos on it imported from my cameras and USB storage devices.
When I activated Iphoto for the first time and it imported photos it seemed to think there was over 30,000 photos and whilst importing it seemed to import the samew photos again and again.
I cannot open it now as it spends all its time updating thumbnails.
What has happened? Please help!
OllyAs a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result. -
IPhoto has gones from crashing to just being ... blank
I have a late 2009 iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.8
My iPhoto 8 stopped working when I plugged in my iphone/ipad. The familiar message came up about the problem report. I upgraded to the lastest iPhoto (9.2.1 from the App shop - will have to look into whether the TOS allow me to downlod it a second time if I delete it) thinking that would solve the problem. Problem persisted. Before mucking about too much I tried using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library; it could not work and showed me the same problem report message from iPhoto. I copied my 50 gb iPhoto Library onto an external drive so that if I reinstalled I would not lose the photos. The original iPhoto library is still in place. I wanted to open iPhoto so I could more fully examine the problem report log and copy the first 50 lines of code. For a while I couldn't even get the Problem report when opening iPhoto, just a blank white box with a blue "choose" button in the bottom right corner. The menu bar at the top of the screen is available but almost all choices are greyed out. After trying various things I have gotten the problem report back (copied below). I have tried the obvious choices of rebooting the machine, deleting the plist file and looking for 3ivx (not installed). I am now a bit hesitant to do anything. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at

After apple store erased and re-installed iPhoto has gone. how do I get it back ?
macbook air 14 mths old wouldn't turn on. apple store said corrupted hard drive. erased and re-installed os x 10.8 . now restoring back up but iPhoto missing and iTunes and app stores says os version doesn't support them. What can I do ?
Visit the store, log in and download again, what you can get. Apps are no problem, even videos.
Regarding music, this is not since ever that you can download music again. So if there are older purchases, like from 5 years ago, you can't simply download them again from the store.
In this case, contact iTunes support saying you lost all music purchases from before a certain date and kindly asking if they would make that available for download for you and most probably they will. The store keeps your purchase history, so they can verify.
After all or at least most of the stuff is ack on HDD again - make a backup! And later, regularly make backups again. Remember it. -
IPhoto has gone bonkers!!!
Hello everyone.
This weekend, I upgraded my iMac to 10.5.5. Now every time I drag pictures from a webpage to the desktop, the iPhoto app will startup and automatically import to iPhoto. Also if I open up a DVD, or start up various programs, iPhoto will start up and start trying to auto-import the files.
This is driving me crazy... just crazy
I have checked the settings for import and iPhoto, there is nothing there to correct this.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
TimmyTimmy:
First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and see if that will fix the problem.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
My Iphoto Has Gone Crazy!
every time i open Iphoto all the duplicates I deleted with the annihilator are back!
not only that but tons of blank photos show up.
Pls help I have no idea what's going on. thxStart with the top three.
If that fails:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Regards

My MacBook Pro13" mid 2009's HDD went 'phut', I replaced the drive and (eventually) installed OS Mavericks. I had no usable back up of my old HDD. I have noticed that I have no copy of iPhoto anymore, is there anything I can do about that? I'm no particular fan of the app but my wife uses it.
You can purchase iPhoto application from App store.
Launch App store and check Photography catogary.
Best. -
iPhoto has dissappeared off my laptop. Says it is installed, but cant find it. All photos gone
Do a Spotlight for "iPhoto.app" and see what yo get. If that fails download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "iPhoto.app" in the file name.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If the application is hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it. -
IPhoto library Gone! (replaced in just one click w/o ever dragging 2 Trash)
iPhoto library gone / replaced in just one click (w/ o ever dragging anything to the trash)!
I currently own multiple PowerMacs all sharing the same high speed local network. All of them run the latest / Mac OS X.4.9 and have multiple HD’s (both internal and external) as well as iLife’ 06. And all of them also have iChatAV3 and are able to video chat one with the other at will while on the same local high speed network.
This is my very first iPhoto library nightmare since I’ve owned a mac. and yes I’ve always been conditioned to backup everything one wishes to keep. This particular scenario is no different. (altho my back up HD for one of the three G4 computers involved was a bit dated by at least 6 months).
This was essentially triggered via two separate iLife ‘06 apps , namely iPhoto and iChatAV3 (combined with at least an ounce of stupidity on my part). That combined with 2 people not communicating properly / being on the same page (or rather the same Folder) when working on the very same task. Hey... I do NOT claim to be an expert at this particular application even though I have used macs since apple first introduced the Apple IIe decades ago. So this does not stem from lack of experience but rather not thinking things thru entirely in terms of all the possible consequences of simple, yet catastrophic actions when it comes to replacing or authenticating one particular folder containing the entire iPhoto Library simply titled “pictures”.
Starts like this, ichatav is open on 2 of three macs and my teenage daughter asks me to send her a roll of pictures she downloaded into my computer (since it’s twice as fast as her own) from her digital still camera. Now she wants all 12 photos on her computer as well. So I drag all 12 photos to my desktop and place them in a folder titled “Jackies pics”. I drag this folder to her icon on my buddy list and ichat AV simply refuses to allow sending the entire folder and ask me to send them one at a time. That should have been my first clue. Strange I thought. Always worked well in the past. Why not now? So I tell her over ichatav that the app simply won’t allow me to send her the entire folder and that I’ll have to send them one at a time. Please make a new folder on your HD called Jackie’s pics. She agrees and creates a folder on her end called .... (you guessed it) ...... “pictures”...... to which she drags each of the 12 images I sent over our local network.
Little did she realize this newly created folder has the makings of an atomic bomb when it comes to importing the entire folder into iPhoto’s library on her own mac. A dialog box quickly materializes asking that she “authenticate” or hit cancel. So she ask me what to do. I said that’s fine, hit authenticate (assuming she titled it Jackies pics). BIG mistake! She hits authenticate and now she has the 12 images I sent her in iPhoto....BUT .... the 1600 or so originals in the entire iPhoto library quickly vanishes. Her entire iphoto library is now wiped out or rather replaced with this new folder. She asks me, what happened? And in less than 30 seconds she in complete tears. Over 2-3 years of her photos (all 1600 images) gone in the click of a mouse.
Today is father’s day .... and I remembered that I have a complete backup of her HD (even though it is a bit dated). So together, we managed to recover about 90% of the lost images. If anyone reading this knows how I can possibly recover the final 10% (most current photos) then please help us.
Bottom line: We were fortunate. This Father’s Day iPhoto Nightmare ended happily....
TIA
(3) G4 PM's/(3) S-Drives/Sony TRV900/Nikons/6FWHD's/PS7/iLife06/FCPHD/DVDSP/etc. Mac OS X (10.4.8)Just another update .... Today, my daughter was multitasking on her G4 powermac working within iPhoto as well as email account and last but not least the latest iTunes. As she opened this final app (and I mean "final").... her entire hard drive bit the dust after she saw the spinning beachball and hence attempted to force quit. (I should also point out we are having a heat wave in San Diego today ...which also may have contributed to this hardware issue mainly).
This time, I had a complete updated copy of her HD and simply cloned it to a new hard drive. Took me a few hours to troubleshoot, clone and install a new drive in its place. But all is working normally again (sure hope it stays that way this time).
Friendly reminder to those who read this post .....
BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP .... ESPECIALLY IN IPHOTO & ITUNES! -
IPhoto has hidden my iPhoto Library- photos there, but can't locate LIBRARY
*Here's a bit of a strange one!* I have iPhoto 7.1 (not yet 7.1.1) on my PowerBook G4-12" and last week I imported 6700 photos from my Kodak EasyShare Collection (which had a total of 16,000+) - and it all worked great.
*I setup about 20 EVENTS-*- some with 4 photos-- some with 800! I transferred 6098 photos to my iPod Touch (16gb) and SUPER!! +(OK the iTouch puts the first dated photo in each event as the KEY photo-- doesn't accept the "KEY PHOTO" I assigned in iPhoto-- but otherwise super).+
*OK SO TODAY:* I have 132 new photos to import from my digital camera. _FORGOT TO SAY THIS:_ The 29 gb iPhoto Library is located on an *external 48 gb HD (LaCie 300 gb with 3 partitions - on the 48 gb partition).*
So I imported the photos directly to iPhoto and all the events are gone and just the new 132 photos (1 event).
WHAT?!?!?!!!!!!!!!
So I then plug-in the HD to my MacBook and opent iPhoto 7.1.1 with the option key down and choose the iPhoto Library on the External HD and all is there, all OK-- Whew!
I now open iPhoto 7.1 on the PBG4 and the photos are there!! - *but the external HD is not connected!!* Somehow iPhoto has transferred them to the internal 100gb HD on the PBG4-- BUT WHERE?!?!? Even with a SPOTLIGHT or EASY FIND search, _I cannot locate the iPhoto Library!!!_ I even deleted the photos that were similar in the Kodak EasyShare folder thinking it was referencing them, but nope-- it still opened with 132 photos and where they are located, I have no idea!
I would like to transfer these 132 photos to the MAIN iPhoto Library on the 48gb HD - but I don't know where they are! (I've gone to where it should be-- in Users/Steve/Pictures....)
But I see them!
Can I DELETE this single event? But what then, is that "invisible Library" still about?
At this time, I really don't want to connect the HD to the PBG4 since I don't want to risk it corrupting the 6700 photos in that Library.
(((Of course I'll backup that iPhoto Library first-- so if I "wreck" one, I'll have a backup))); and of course I have the photos themselves via the wonderful Kodak EasyShare program which plays videos in slide shows (but without "EVENTS" or the easy ability to transfer to the iTouch)--
Thanks for any comments!
Steve-- Sunday 3 February 2008Stephen:
Do a search on the PB for a file titles "Library6.iPhoto". Every library has one and you can find the library by finding that file. Once you find the library open it like this and drag out the Originals folder to the desktop.
Now connect the external HD to the PB, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to Find Library and open the one on the external HD. Now you can drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window to get those 132 photos into that library. When done delete the library and originals folder from the PB.
What may have happened is that iPhoto was launched with the external HD disconnected and, not finding the library, created a new one. Using iPhoto Library Manager to manage and open your library will avoid that problem as it will tell you that the library is not available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. Successfully Imported photos to iPhoto are gone!
Dear Apple,
Today I imported photos to iPhoto. It said "import successful". Followed by: "Do you want to delete your photos?" I choose "Yes." like I usually do. I never before had an issue with this, that is until today! Shortly after choosing "Yes" the spinning rainbow wheel of death started. I was unable to do anything with iPhoto. The mouse was not functional with the iPhoto program. After waiting more than 15+ mins I decieded to give up & in the end I had to "Force Quit" iPhoto. After reopening iPhoto, none of the photos I loaded are visible. I keep everything orginized by date. Despite that iPhoto claimed it uploaded the photos successfully & none of them can be found anywhere on my computer comes the worst of it... iPhoto did in fact delete all of the photos on my SD card! So I have no way of trying to reupload them & they are not in my iPhoto. Not sure what happened but if there is someway to find them that would be great. I used the "search" feature... nothing. I manually looked in my iPhoto files... nothing. Yet it said they were successfully uploaded. What do I do? Is there a way to find or retrieve my photos? It was over 200 some photos I took today. After this icident I think next time I will choose "Save" photos on SD, wait & make sure the photos have been transfered, then go back & delete them. Never again. With this in mind I do have one other question. Why on earth does iPhoto downsize my original photo files? I always have kept my photos with a certain resolution. iPhoto everytime downsizes them! Is there a way to keep this from happening? I do save my files in RAW format, however I do not have iPhoto, nor a program to open them with at this time. Is there a way to keep my jpegs the same resolution. Why would this be happening? Thanks.1. You're not talking to Apple here. This forum is users talking to other users.
2. You can recover the photos from your SD card with apps like MediaRecover or Picture Rescue
3. Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then use your Camera to Reformat the Card. This has three advantages:
a. You know your data is safe - because you've taken the time to check it.
b. Reformatting the card is much, much faster - takes a couple of seconds
c. Reformatting also refreshes the Directory Structure on the Card, helping prevent issues with the card and prolonging its life.
4. iPhoto doesn't downsize or change your original files in any way. I'm guessing that you're confusing the Master and thge Preview if you're shooting RAW. But to be sure: What exactly are you shooting?
5. 'Resolution' is a very vague term. Some folks use it to refer to pixel density, some to refer to file size and others to refer to image quality. What do you mean by it? -
My Macbook pro iPhoto is gone!!
My Macbook pro has been running very slow and today i found out that my iPhoto is gone! I have checked my purchased items and iPhoto is not listed there! What I meant to do?! What is the problem?
To re-install iPhoto
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.
If it's not on the list then check your account to make sure it's not hidden. -
My Edits are there, but 'Revert to Original' has gone
Sorry, yet another iPhoto problem
I've noticed that though all my recent iPhoto edits are still there, the 'Revert to Original' has gone, for all of them. And the sliders - which should be in their post-edit positions - are all at zero or default.
I tested this by duplicating a recent edit, editing it dramatically (full saturation and colour temperature), came out of Edit, and went back in - no clickable Revert, and all sliders back in their default positions. I checked in the menu, and Revert to Original was greyed out.
I then went into Edit mode and flicked back through the Library. Occasionally the Revert to Original button was clickable, but as far as I can remember, those were all edits done ages ago in a previous version of iPhoto (and maybe not all of them?).
I thought iPhoto '11 kept track of editing adjustments, i.e. it was non-destructible editing? I appear to have a version that saves and preserves the edit(s), but overwrites the original.Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.

2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-20276325-17180 2/iPhotolibcontents.PNG
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Sorry, I got your email but your reply hasn't appeared in the Discussions (NOW it has! just when I post the reply..), so I've pasted it here (hope you didn't mind).
Anyway, since then, when everything else failed, I did already have a look inside the Package, and there I saw all my Original and Modified versions, so I knew they were still there. It's just a case of why iPhoto isn't offering to Revert to them.
Ok, I have some questions about your latest advice (which is going to be a BIG JOB!!).
When you say Metadata, do you mean I will lose all the camera's EXIF data (that normally shows if you click Info)?
What about Ratings? One of the big exercises I'm currently currently halfway through - 4,500 photos! - is rating them all - will I lose all the ratings?
When you say drag Originals / Masters to the new Library, what about Modified? Remember, I can see all my edits - they are in the Library, it's just that I can't Revert to Original in many cases. If I don't drag the Modifieds over, won't I lose all my edits? (I'd rather lose the Originals!)
When you say drag the subfolders, they are nested several deep, e.g. 2013 > 09 > 20 > 20130920-193215 > (a bunch of picture files). Do I have to recreate the directory structure, or could I just drag 2013 > 09 in one go, with everything inside it? And would I have to create 2013 folder first, then drag all of 09 into that?
Sorry to fire so many questions at you - it's a big undertaking. (I might find in the long run, that if ever I want an Original back, I should just Open the Package and retrieve it manually, so it duplicates rather than Reverts. It's not something I do except once in a blue moon, so I might decide to live with the current situation... )
Anyway, let me know what you think : it's either undertake this major task, or live without being able to Revert To Original from within iPhoto itself. -
Hi. My iPhoto has "quit unexpectedly" and won't reopen (despite many desperate attempts). I am worried about losing my photos as I haven't backed up for a while. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased 2 iPhone 5's the first day they came out. Black 64gb for myself and white 32gb for my wife. She is having somewhat the same issues as you have. Wifi is weak and keeps dropping the signal, and also her phone almost never has LTE. And we are in a very strong Verizon LTE area in north Los Angeles county. My phone has never had any signal issues, wifi or LTE. I have been researching the issue to no avail. I though maybe the white with the brushed alluminum may cause signal issues, but haven't found anything on that and posts about the black one haven't problems blew that theory up.
I have also changed the SIM card and the phone itself and still the same problem. I saw a post about someone getting their phone swapped out and the apple rep told him not to restore the phone, but to just set it up as new. I have yet to try it, gonna try this weekend.. But it makes sense! I, like you have 6 apple devices (2 iPhone 5's, 2 iPhone 4's apple tv3, and the ipad3) and have no issues running all my devices via router.
So I am thinking about the history of the restores and backups and my wife is the only one that went from the 4 to the 5.. Every other device was setup as new. So my theory is that he iphone 5 has issues when you restore from previous backups.. Maybe something a little different from the backups of the previous models create issues in the iPhone 5's?
Like I said, I'm going to give it a shot this weekend and see what happens. If you get a chance to try this before, please let me know if it works and if I try before you I will update you.
Good luck and hopefully we can get these wonderful phones working like they should!
Nate
