IPhoto has no photos

Each time I open iPhoto, all I get is the menu bar across the top. No window of photos. Nothing else. And all of the functions are grayed out when I pull down the top menu items. I have tried to hold every key combination I could think of down while opening to get it to rebuild the library, and it's unresponsive. It's v9.6 and I'm running Yosemite.

First  give this a  try:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
     User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite,  go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
If this fails continue with:
Open the iPhoto Library package with the  Finder as shown in this screenshot
locate the Masters folder and check inside to see if the original files are there. If the folder is empty you need to restore your latest backup copy made prior to this happening.
If the original files are in the Masters folder you'll need to do the following:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto has two photo streams

    Hi There,
I have a rather strange problem with my iPhoto App.  It seems to have two photo streams in it (see the picture)
When I look on my iPhone, I only see one photo stream on there.  The photo stream called Jan 2012 Photo Stream is empty and the original Photo Stream has all of the pictures in it that should be there.
I want to get rid of the empty photo stream and just keep the original because I don't understand why it has all of a suddenly appeared. but I don't know how to do it.
Can someone please help me out with instructions on how to get rid of it?  Or at the very least an explanation as to why I now how two Photo Streams
    Thanks
    Jason

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.
You can both use the same Apple ID  - which is what my wife and I do

  • IPhoto has no photo in iPhoto library nor another album....empty folders...

I don't know why what used to be working fine and now iPhoto library contains folder with no photo?!
Would it be because I move the iPhoto library to my user/home folder?
I have been shooting Raw and load into Bridge and save to album folder in iPhoto library in my home folder. I am also seeing Abobe Bridge cache bc. and bct. files populated every where. It just so confusing.
Now, just want to set iPhoto right first. How can I get photo back in iPhoto library?
I have used Diskwarrior and apple disk utility to try to fox it but no help.
    Help!

    vchen:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. In moving that original iPhoto Library folder iPhoto could not find it the next time it was launched and created a new one. So launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, choose the Find option. Then navigate to the location of your original iPhoto folder and select it. Once you're back up and running with it you can delete the library folder that is in your Pictures folder. It will be the empty one.
    Do you Twango?

  • My iPhoto has 3500 photos and uses 7.2 gigs. When I load iPhoto it color wheel forever.Must I archive photos to fix this?

    See topic heading

As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does'nt give this a try: Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Iphoto has a photo not on I pad

I am not that familar with the icloud and took a workshop 2 times to understand. But here is my question... I have a macbook at home and a photo in Iphoto. If I am out with friends an do not have that that device, but do have my phone or I pad can I bring it to that device I have and show my friend

No, you'd need to add the photos to photo stream before you went out.

  • IMovie freezes (hangs) when iPhoto has many photos

Hello, all. I just switched to Mac from Windows only a week ago, but I'm already frustrated that I'm facing a problem with the software that I always wanted to use.
iMovie hangs and does not even start. I have iPhoto with about 40gb of photos. When I delete the iPhoto library, iMovie runs fine. But once I have the library back in iPhoto, it hangs. one day, I left it for 6 hours but it never ran.
Can someone help me on this issue? I already did reinstallation of Leopard and iLife package.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forum.
I can't be sure but I doubt the amount of photos you have in iphoto is all that relevant, what I suspect might be is the video files you have in iphoto. If any of the video files in iphoto are not of an editable format supported by imovie you may well have trouble opening the application

  • My trash in iPhoto has no thumbnails in it, however, it says it has over 31k photos.  I had over 67K, but "put back" what thumbnails I could see in order to move them over in smaller groups to delete.  How can I delete what isn't there?

My trash in iPhoto has no thumbnails in it, however, it says I have over 31K photos in it.  I have already "put back" over 35K photos to Events.  How can I delete from iPhoto photos that are not in a thumbnail?  Also, I have been deleting these for over a year assuming that they were being deleted when I put them in the trash.  I didn't realize that there was an iPhoto trash along with my computer trash.  I can't put the other Events into the trash until I erase what's in there. Thank you for any help  you can give me.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • IPhoto has hidden my iPhoto Library- photos there, but can't locate LIBRARY

*Here's a bit of a strange one!* I have iPhoto 7.1 (not yet 7.1.1) on my PowerBook G4-12" and last week I imported 6700 photos from my Kodak EasyShare Collection (which had a total of 16,000+) - and it all worked great.
*I setup about 20 EVENTS-*- some with 4 photos-- some with 800! I transferred 6098 photos to my iPod Touch (16gb) and SUPER!! +(OK the iTouch puts the first dated photo in each event as the KEY photo-- doesn't accept the "KEY PHOTO" I assigned in iPhoto-- but otherwise super).+
*OK SO TODAY:* I have 132 new photos to import from my digital camera. _FORGOT TO SAY THIS:_ The 29 gb iPhoto Library is located on an *external 48 gb HD (LaCie 300 gb with 3 partitions - on the 48 gb partition).*
So I imported the photos directly to iPhoto and all the events are gone and just the new 132 photos (1 event).
    WHAT?!?!?!!!!!!!!!
So I then plug-in the HD to my MacBook and opent iPhoto 7.1.1 with the option key down and choose the iPhoto Library on the External HD and all is there, all OK-- Whew!
I now open iPhoto 7.1 on the PBG4 and the photos are there!! - *but the external HD is not connected!!* Somehow iPhoto has transferred them to the internal 100gb HD on the PBG4-- BUT WHERE?!?!? Even with a SPOTLIGHT or EASY FIND search, _I cannot locate the iPhoto Library!!!_ I even deleted the photos that were similar in the Kodak EasyShare folder thinking it was referencing them, but nope-- it still opened with 132 photos and where they are located, I have no idea!
I would like to transfer these 132 photos to the MAIN iPhoto Library on the 48gb HD - but I don't know where they are! (I've gone to where it should be-- in Users/Steve/Pictures....)
    But I see them!
Can I DELETE this single event? But what then, is that "invisible Library" still about?
At this time, I really don't want to connect the HD to the PBG4 since I don't want to risk it corrupting the 6700 photos in that Library.
(((Of course I'll backup that iPhoto Library first-- so if I "wreck" one, I'll have a backup))); and of course I have the photos themselves via the wonderful Kodak EasyShare program which plays videos in slide shows (but without "EVENTS" or the easy ability to transfer to the iTouch)--
    Thanks for any comments!
    Steve-- Sunday 3 February 2008

    Stephen:
Do a search on the PB for a file titles "Library6.iPhoto". Every library has one and you can find the library by finding that file. Once you find the library open it like this and drag out the Originals folder to the desktop.
Now connect the external HD to the PB, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to Find Library and open the one on the external HD. Now you can drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window to get those 132 photos into that library. When done delete the library and originals folder from the PB.
What may have happened is that iPhoto was launched with the external HD disconnected and, not finding the library, created a new one. Using iPhoto Library Manager to manage and open your library will avoid that problem as it will tell you that the library is not available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

I have read plenty of the posts on the subject and it seems that deleting the "3ivx" fixed the problem.  I looked at the detaied reports and see where it says "

On my report it says "/Library/Application Support/iLifeMediaBrowser/*/iLMBiPhoto8Plugin".  Does this help with an answer?

I am also having this crashing problem. I am running lion on a 2010 mac mini. My iPhoto library is kept on an external drive. • How can I manually attach images from my photo booth (imported into iPhoto) to emails? Auto function, in photo booth has my photos lying sideways?

How can I manually attach images from my photo booth to iCloud emails?
They are imported as 'events' into my iphoto library.
Auto function, in photo booth has my photos lying sideways when placed in 'mail' emails?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • IPhoto Has Thousands of References to Photos on an Old Server

My wife and I have been using Apple products forever. When iPhoto came out, we started importing all our printed photos. In the beginning, we put all these photos on my computer to act as a server, and somehow (this was maybe 10 years ago) we got the photos into my wife's computer's iPhoto. What happened was that her iPhoto created references to the photos on my computer, rather than copying them to her computer. So fast forward 5 years - we both have new computers, new versions of iPhoto, and her computer starts spitting out errors after a minute of trying to view most photos - the old computer is missing. So she performs a months-long surgery to find the thousands of missing photos by name on my new computer and copy them over to hers, and then re-link them.
Why not just import everything? She's chosen to keep different photos from me, with different ratings, and organized them all into albums which are different from mine.
So this works for a while and then suddenly, SURPRISE! It happens again. Her iPhoto goes back to missing thousands of photos which it can't seem to find on a computer I haven't had in ten years. Every time she clicks one, it takes 60-90 seconds trying to connect to the non-existent computer (even with my networking completely off) and then complains that it can't find it.
Is she in for another months-long surgery to move these photos over to her drive and re-change all the files AGAIN? This time, it came along with the destruction of most thumbnails. Of the 20,000 photos, about half are blank or a repeat of the same wrong thumbnail.
What we've tried: I got her a new computer. I upgraded her to Mountain Lion. I ran all the non-import special functions you get from holding down command-option and launching iPhoto. They all completed except the  "upgrade thumbnails" takes about 6 hours to get about 1/8 of the way through before crashing. I have to set a book on the return key so that the infinite "missing file" pop-ups can be bypassed. I doubt we'll ever get past 1/8 of the way rebuilding.
What can I do? Is there a way to detect which photos are "missing files" without clicking each one? Is there a way to remove the references to "really old server (2)" in the iPhoto database so that at least we can avoid the 60-90 second network-checking wait after each missing photo click? I am a computer professional so I feel competent changing things in the iPhoto database if there is a way to do so.
    Help!

If her entire library is a "referenced" library to photos on your old Mac that library is history.  She might as well as delete it and start over. If she has photos in that library that are not referenced and are still viewable try using iPhoto LIbrary Manager to rebuild the Library as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Is your library a "managed" library?
If it is you can put it on an external HD that is formatted as shown in this screenshot
and both of you can use the same library (just not at the same time).
If that's not acceptable and her library has no photos salvageable try this:
1 - have your wife create a new managed library.
2 - connect you two Macs by a wired LAN, Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire or WiFi.
3 - use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy those Events from your library into hers. Also copied will be the keywords, titles, places and other metadata.
And I'd not use a referenced library again.  It's just not worth the problems it brings up.
