IPhoto has no window

When iPhoto is launched only the toolbar appears. I've tried everything I can think of including reinstalling from OX install discs. Originally I thought it was caused by the 8.0.3 update (I have iLife'09) but reinstalled as iPhoto7 it did the same.

Are you using Spaces? Disable them and see if that finds the window.
Alternatively: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

  • Iphoto has lost connection with its folder

    Hello,
One day I turned on my mac, opened iPhoto and found it empty. I've read various threads and know not to be alarmed as I can see the folder of my pics is still there.
I am however having trouble re-connecting iPhoto to this folder. In the past iPhoto has sorted the folder into numerous sub-folders accredited to the year in which the photos were taken. I cannot connect to the main folder that will include these sub-folders. It always wants me to connect iphoto to a folder with only pics in and not a folder with other folders inside.
Am I going to have to go through the laborious business of moving all my photos into a single folder that will then communiacate with iphoto?
    Thanks.

See if you can rebuild your library with iPhoto Library Manager 3.
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto  8.1.2 and later  or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto has hidden my iPhoto Library- photos there, but can't locate LIBRARY

*Here's a bit of a strange one!* I have iPhoto 7.1 (not yet 7.1.1) on my PowerBook G4-12" and last week I imported 6700 photos from my Kodak EasyShare Collection (which had a total of 16,000+) - and it all worked great.
*I setup about 20 EVENTS-*- some with 4 photos-- some with 800! I transferred 6098 photos to my iPod Touch (16gb) and SUPER!! +(OK the iTouch puts the first dated photo in each event as the KEY photo-- doesn't accept the "KEY PHOTO" I assigned in iPhoto-- but otherwise super).+
*OK SO TODAY:* I have 132 new photos to import from my digital camera. _FORGOT TO SAY THIS:_ The 29 gb iPhoto Library is located on an *external 48 gb HD (LaCie 300 gb with 3 partitions - on the 48 gb partition).*
So I imported the photos directly to iPhoto and all the events are gone and just the new 132 photos (1 event).
    WHAT?!?!?!!!!!!!!!
So I then plug-in the HD to my MacBook and opent iPhoto 7.1.1 with the option key down and choose the iPhoto Library on the External HD and all is there, all OK-- Whew!
I now open iPhoto 7.1 on the PBG4 and the photos are there!! - *but the external HD is not connected!!* Somehow iPhoto has transferred them to the internal 100gb HD on the PBG4-- BUT WHERE?!?!? Even with a SPOTLIGHT or EASY FIND search, _I cannot locate the iPhoto Library!!!_ I even deleted the photos that were similar in the Kodak EasyShare folder thinking it was referencing them, but nope-- it still opened with 132 photos and where they are located, I have no idea!
I would like to transfer these 132 photos to the MAIN iPhoto Library on the 48gb HD - but I don't know where they are! (I've gone to where it should be-- in Users/Steve/Pictures....)
    But I see them!
Can I DELETE this single event? But what then, is that "invisible Library" still about?
At this time, I really don't want to connect the HD to the PBG4 since I don't want to risk it corrupting the 6700 photos in that Library.
(((Of course I'll backup that iPhoto Library first-- so if I "wreck" one, I'll have a backup))); and of course I have the photos themselves via the wonderful Kodak EasyShare program which plays videos in slide shows (but without "EVENTS" or the easy ability to transfer to the iTouch)--
    Thanks for any comments!
    Steve-- Sunday 3 February 2008

    Stephen:
Do a search on the PB for a file titles "Library6.iPhoto". Every library has one and you can find the library by finding that file. Once you find the library open it like this and drag out the Originals folder to the desktop.
Now connect the external HD to the PB, launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to Find Library and open the one on the external HD. Now you can drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window to get those 132 photos into that library. When done delete the library and originals folder from the PB.
What may have happened is that iPhoto was launched with the external HD disconnected and, not finding the library, created a new one. Using iPhoto Library Manager to manage and open your library will avoid that problem as it will tell you that the library is not available.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I was importing photos yesterday. iphoto has been importing them since yesterday.  It won't let me stop the import or exit iphoto. Any thoughts. I am a very new MAC user.  Thanks!!

Force quit iPhoto by typing Command+Option+Esc or using the Apple ➙ Force Quit menu option and selecting iPhoto in the Force Quit window.

  • Iphoto has recently stopped working; it continually shows the loading circle. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it, updated it

Iphoto has recently stopped working; it continually shows the loading circle. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it,updated it and reinstalled all my apps with the ‘applications install DVD’ however it still does not work. I have also tried holding the command and option key while pressing iphoto then when the pop up appears i press the checkboxes that have been suggested by other users however nothing happens. Any other suggestions would be great!

Ok the program itself is likely fine, it's the files it depends on that are not.
    Step #1
1: Open your Users/Library/Preferences folder (if on Lion you need to use the Go in Finder)
2: Scroll down until you see a file called
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
3: Trash it and reboot, start iPhoto and see if it works.
    Step #2
1: Go to your Users/Pictures/iPhoto Library and right (or hold option) click on it and "show package contents"
2: Inside will be a folder with your originals, copy them out.
3: Move and rename the iPhotoLibrary file outside of the Pictures folder.
4: Reboot and restart iPhoto, check inside the Pictures folder if iPhotoLibrary was created.
5: Download ClamXav and run a scan on the Original photo's and your whole machine too while your at it.
(it's if there is a picture in there from Windows it could contain a corruption caused by malware)
6: Reimport the originals back into iPhoto.
See if those two steps resolve your issue, if not I could suspect next a network issue? Like iPhoto is trying to contact the internet and can't or gets hung?
You can can create another user, use the Shared Drop box to transfer files and log into the other user and see if it's a issue with just your User account, and if so you might just want to transisition over and then one day delete the old user and it's problems.
    Please keep your Flash updated.

  • Sharing iPhoto library with Windows PC?

Is there any way (even using a 3rd party solution) to share an iPhoto library to Windows users, so they can browse pictures by albums? I used a Macbook Pro as my primary system, but my gf uses a Windows based PC. She likes to put together photo books, but it's a pain that the only way for her to get pictures is for me to copy them for her.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

No, iPhoto has no cross platform ability whatever. Attemting to access the Library from another OS can lead to a corrupted Library.

  • My iphoto has disappeared, very upset as I dont want to have to pay for it agian

My iphoto has disappered and i am so upset, im not very computer savey and still getting used to the mac, and really close to going back to a pc. Can someone help me find my iphoto without having to spend any more money...

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • My iPhotos has become useless

My iPhotos 6.0.4 app has taken a first class trip to corruption city.
Here are the symptoms in the main window:
    1. nothing appears in the source panel of the app.
    2. nothing appears in the picture panel of the app.
    3. can not add new folders in the source panel.
    4. gives me an error sound every time I click the main window.
Here are the symptoms in the menu bar:
    1. in the iPhoto dropdown menu only the Hide iPhotos and the Hide Others options are selectable, everything else is grayed out.
    2. nothing in the file menu dropdown is selectable, it is all grayed out.
    3. the rest of the dropdowns contain a few selectable items but do absolutely nothing.
    4. I have to force quit the app. because the quit selection in the File dropdown is grayed out. (Command Q does nothing either)
I have tryed to rebuild the database but never got the dialog box to rebuild the database. All I got was the aforementioned problems listed above.
I hope someone can help with this issue.

    blueIS:
Your photos are safe. Look in the Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals folder and you'll see them in various subfolders.
It sounds like the library's database file, Library6.iPhoto, has been damaged/corrupted. That will happen if files or folders are moved or renamed while in the Finder or there's some sort of interruption while iPhoto is writing to that file.
Since you've already tried to rebuild the directory I believe your only option is to create a new library and import the full sized files from the old library's Originals folder as follows:
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. This sounds different than with my IOS devices, since I am able to see the photos even with a connection to the Internet.
Do you mean without a connection to the internet? With a connection it's logical you would be able to see the PS.
The following is from iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
Can photos be saved or downloaded from a shared photo stream?
Yes. Once photos are shared, anyone who can view the shared photo stream can download and keep the photos permanently.
On a device using iOS 6 or later, you can save photos to the Camera Roll. On a Mac, using iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4, you can save photos from the shared stream to your local Photo Library or any other location on your Mac. On a Windows PC, you can copy photos from a shared photo stream to any folder. On the web, photos can be downloaded directly to your computer from the detail view of each photo.
This tells me that the image files are not on the HD unless the subscriber chooses to download them.

  • Keep getting error message that iphoto has detected inconsistencies and needs to rebuild

while adding photos to library keep getting error message that iphoto has detected inconsistencies and needs to rebuild the library..how do I fix?

    By rebuilding your library.
Back up your iPhoto library before you do that.
If iPhoto is open, quit it.
Hold down the Option and Command keys while you open iPhoto (click the iPhoto icon in the Dock).
The Photo Library First Aid window opens.
Click "Rebuild database" and click the "rebuild" button.
If this does not solve the problem, see "option 2" in Terence Devlin's post here:
Re: i keep getting the message iPhoto has detected inconsistencies in your library but after repairing it it just quits

  • IPhoto has become "unreadable"!!!!

    Hi all,
My iPhoto has suddenly stopped "working", how do I get it back to normal and keep all my photos?
I have followed the instructions given by Apple but it hasn't worked. It says i can try restoring my library from a backup and I don't know how to do that, and I don't think I have ever backed it up.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated, thank you.
    Mollie.

    Try this:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto main view window does not update

I have a problem with the recent version of iPhoto 9.3 (650.39). Sometimes, if I return from a full view of an image, and then try to go to a different folder, album or anything, the main window view does not update. If I resize iPhoto, the main window stays the same.
I need to restart iPhoto to fix this problem. My Mac is a 2011 iMac with the latest Version of OS X 10.7.4
    Anyone has a similar problem?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

If it does work in Firefox Safe-mode then disable all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Sharing iphoto library with windows computer

Hi. My husband has a windows laptop with an itty bitty hard drive, and not enough room to store photos.
I have all of our photos in iphoto on my Macbook Pro.
Can I simply export my iphoto library to an external hard drive so that he can also access the photos?  Or is there a better way?

I understand that that I can't just share my library.
I'm more looking for a way that my husband can access the photos. And, I guess, as a back up in case something were to happen to my laptop and for some unfathomable reason I chose not to get another Mac. (I already back up with Time Machine).
I have Mountain Lion.  Do you know what my husband would need on his PC to use PhotoStream?  Where are the photos stored on PhotoStream?

  • How can I access the iphoto library using windows pc? Upgrading to aperture solves my problem?

How can I access the iphoto library using windows pc? Upgrading to aperture solves my problem?
My home network is used both by my macbook and my wife's windows pc. Considering that, I would like to know if we can share our pictures with each other (specially because I intend to store all of them into a NAS storage - WD My Cloud, probably).

No you can not - neither iPhoto nor Aperture has any cross platform capability
You can share photos with the PC using MyPhotoStream or Shared PhotoStreames
You can not share the iPhoto library
And you can not put the iPHoto library on a NAS - it MUST always be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and mube on a fast wired local connection - it can not be on a Network
There are Digital Asset Managers that can do what you want - iPhoto and Aperture can not
