IPhoto High Res Thumbnails - Once converted, can I view on my old Mac?

If I Generate High Res Thumbnails for my MBPr will I still be able to view & use the library on my alternate non-Retina display Mac? I go between the two w/ an external HD containing all my photos, including the iPhoto Library. Both machines are up-to-date w/ OS & software. Thanks!

You don't have to do anything to use the library on your MBPr.  Just copy it to the Pictures folder on your MBPr and open it with iPhoto.  Nothing else to do.

  • How to I get high res thumbnail images?

Just discovered once I've imported images into my library Aperture 3.2.2 (running under 10.7.3) doesn't render high res thumbnail images (when the Browser Thumbnail Resize slider is set to the far right/maximum), even though my "Previews" preference settings are as follows:
"Use embedded JPEG from camera when possible" is unchecked
"Don't Limit" for Photo Preview is selected
Photo Preview quality set to 10
Deleting and regenerating thumbnails doesn't solve the issue. However, if I delete the photo from the referenced library, then reimport the image, the browser thumbnail image renders sharp. The low res thumbnail is at left; high res thumbnail (after re-import) is at right. Both thumbnails images are sharp when the Browser Thumbnail Resize slider is positioned in the middle. Photos render sharp in the Viewer, regardless.
Going back through my images, it seems Aperture stopped providing a sharp thumbnail image since around July 2010. Other than updating Aperture, my workflow or supported camera hasn't changed. Couldn't find a reference to this issue in the User Manual. Am I missing something a setting somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Its unclear if the command Generate Thumbnails actually does anything if the thumbs already exist and as there isn;t a Delete Thumbnails command like there is a Delete preview command there are only two ways to force a new thumb to be generated.
One is to import the image again and two is to delete the Thumbnail folder in the Aperture library. I don;t know for sure if this will fix you problem but as I said it is the only way to force the generation of the thumbs.
If you try this make sure you have a good working backup of the library. Nothing here will normally cause data loss but it is always a good idea before messing with the library.
Quit Aperture, Highlight the library in the Finder and right click, Select show package contents. One fo the folders you'll see is Thumbnails, delete it. Open Aperture.
Also be aware that the regeneration of the thumbs will take some time. Depending on the size of the library it could be an all day affair. Aperture is usable while this is going on but it will be slower.

  • How can I get music from old mac to new mac?

How can I get music from old mac to new mac please?
Can't seem to make Migration Assistant work. Doesn't ask about or transfer files.

I just migrated into a new MBP from an old one.
It did not bring the music over.  Apple's instructions are to use the Home Sharing feature of iTunes.
Open iTunes on your old Mac.  Select Home Sharing under the Advanced menu.  Sign in.  Do the same on your new computer.  Then when the library appears under Home Sharing on the left-hand panel on your new computer's iTunes, you can select all and Add To Library.
    That's what Apple says, anyway.

I have bought a new Mac Book Pro, and I need to know how I can move Aperture from my old Mac Book to the new one..

    It begins with: F-285-NER-151-QBQ-and continues with 5 more 3 or 4 letters/numbers..
Yes, that is the number. And what version of Aperture have you installed? The same version as on your old Mac?
But it don´t work on my new Mac...
In what way does it not work? Does it require you to enter a licence number for Aperture 2 as well? That will be necessary, if your serial number is an upgrade serial number. Then you will have to enter all previous numbers as well.
Or does Aperture not accept the number as correct? Then check the spelling; some letters are easily confused like "I" and "1" and "O" and "0". Do not use the number pad to enter the numbers.

I already bought mac book pro last year but it can't view windows just like mac pro for education. I want to make like mac pro for education How?

First, if you have a MACBOOK PRO (a laptop), you should post in that forum. MAC PRO (desktop) and Macbook Pro are different things, so when you use those terms interchangeably, it's impossible to know what you're talking about.
Second, even guessing that you have a laptop, I still have no idea what your question means. Are you trying to load Microsoft Windows on it? Every Mac can run Windows using either Boot Camp or Parallels/Fusion/VMWare solutions. Please explain in more detail what you're trying to do, and we'll try to help. But post in the Macbook Pro forum if you're talking about a laptop.

you may be lucky, but you should expect problems if you do that.
you should properly install your adobe software using the adobe installation files.

  • Thumbnails lost contact with originals in iPhoto '09 (8.1.2.) – can't view fullscreen or edit!

Over the past days my headache over the iPhoto '09 library has gone from bad to worse.
Starting with a few albums and events from last year, iPhoto has stopped displaying some photos (mainly landscape-oriented photos, upright photos seem to be working fine most of them) in fullscreen, edit mode and slideshows.
Browsing through the apple community I've realized that this issue may be due to thumbnails losing contact with original photos. Indeed, I can't seem to export photos to desktop or any other location. "Show original file" or "show file" only opens an empty Finder window, doesn't connect with the Picture folder or anything.
I've also tried entering the Library manually from another working photo, and can't seem to locate a number of pics. It seems the originals are simply lost.
Some of the missing pictures are irreplacable (like my son's birth!).
I'd be INCREDIBLY THANKFUL for any advice on how to save these photos.
    Cheers/ AB

The simple and surefire solution is to restore from back up.
If files are missing then that's the only solution.
    To rebuild the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • If i backed up my iPhotos on an external hard drive can i delete them off my mac?

I recently backed up my Macbook pro on to an external hard drive. I was wodnering if i could delete my photos from my iphoto library to save space, and if so can i then get them back on my computer from my external hard drive?

Depends on exactly what you did
And if you delete the information from your main computer then you do not have a backup - to have a backup you need hte original on your computer and an exact copy on another disk
What format is the external drive? It must be Mac OS extended (journaled) to have your iPhoto library on ti
What did you copy to the external drive? The iPhoto library or your photos?
What you probably need to do is to run your iPhoto library on an external drive and to have a second external drive to backup to - Time Machine is a good choice
To run your iPhoto library on an external drive verify that the drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPHoto library to it intact as a single entity - depress the option and command keyus, launch iPhoto and select the new location - fully test the library on the external drive and after one successful backup cycle verify that the external drive is being backedup - then delete your iPhoto library on the main drive - test one more time before emptying the trash

  • I can't migrate from my old mac

    Hello--
I have an old mac, OSX 10.4.11, and a new mac OSX 10.8.2. I have updated both computer's migration assistants, and followed the tutorial for migration assistant on Apple's support section. I've even tried several ethernet cables!
I click "migrate to a new mac" on my old mac, then "migrate from another mac" on the new mac, and the new mac tells me I need to update my migration assistant on my old mac. Since I just did that, I can't find any other apps that would involve a new/different update of migration assistant.
My old mac is pretty putsy and old... it's turning 7 this year. I haven't always been good about keeping all programs updated on it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kate

Create a backup of the old computer onto an external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy cloner or if you want do a one time backup clone using Disk Utility. Then use Migration Assistant along with the back up EHD and you're all set.  Remember it will migrate apps if you have chosen that feature however you probably have some old PPC based apps  that  will not run on Mountain Lion.

  • Can you swap drives from old mac to new mac?

Hi. I see new mac pros came out today and I want to get one. If I sell my current mac, can I just take out my drives and put them into the new one so I don't have to reinstall all my stuff?
Will the new system recognize the new processors and fsb and just reconfigure, or will some of the system files be screwed up?

    Hi lisamel;
Probably not. The reason I say this is because the new Mac will probably have updated drives in the system that are not in your old system. What you can do is to take the old drive and install it into the new Mac and when it starts up the first time it will ask if you want to migrate from an old system. If you tell it yes, you can then point it at the disk from the old Mac and it will move everything over from the old disk but retain the new system.

  • IMac 10.7 can not connect to an old Mac with Os 9 classic

Hi, hope somebody can help me with this issue
My company bought a brand new IMac 10.7 Osx an I need to make a conection from this machine to an old G3 with Mac Os 9 classic system where all my files are stored and even my Rip software resides.
When I try to make the conection a message appears telling me ¨the system is not supported¨ or something like that, so what can I do? Any way to make the conection?
No, no way to take my old Mac to the trash, my rip software only works on Classic 9 system...
Thanks in advance for any help

Connecting via IP versus system name will not solve the problem, nor will me "finding a newer solution" - I already have a Mac OS 10.7 system and as of today, there is NOTHING newer (that will change possibly in the up-coming week).  I may look at the "work--round" again though. I checked the link but did not understand it on my first pass. It appeared to be a modification process executed on the 10.7 system to enable some "old and insecure behavior".
The 10.5 based tower I have does not provide built-in hardware support for the IDE disks either, so I cannot just move them to it.  Booting the old system in target mode means physically relocating it into the immediate proximitiy of the 10.7 system, or vice versa AND it does not provide access to all of the hard disks installed. It only provides access to the boot disk in many cases. Not to mention, such relocation is not always convienient for the period of time necessary to move the files and then check the integrity to the relocated versions.   I may however attempt to install an NFS server if I can still find one and connect that way.
There is something wrong with the system hardware too. It will not boot into 10.x from an external drive or from the DVD. When all memory modules are installed, the system indicates a memory test errorr, and it does NOT move when the order of modules is changed. Therefore I cannot install a more recent version of the OS and attempt to get the disks seen over the network that way.

  • How can I migrate data from old macs second harddrive in time machine backup to my new mac?

    Hi,
I have a little problem migrating all my data from my old Macbook to my new Macbook. I had two harddisk installed in my Macbook and did make a backup to a USB Disk. It seems that both harddisk are included in the backup. I can see them in Time Machine.
Now I want to restore my data to the new Macbook Retina. Unfortunately the Migration Assistant only shows the system disk, but not the data disk.
How can I access the data disk in the backup to restore the data to some directory on the new Macbook? The data is mostly the iTunes Library of my old Macbook.
    Regards

If the migration assistant doesn't work and you have no backup then you will have to take another path that involves a little more manual work. Anyway in your situation a fresh start seems like a good idea. So set up your new Mac with the same username and afterwards copy your user folder from the old to the new either using your ethernet connection or an external USB drive. This will also bring your user's Library folder along and retain most of your settings at least as far as they are applicable in Mavericks.
