IPhoto hogging hard drive space -- Solutions?

     Forgive me for a long-winded question but can't figure out what's going on here. My iPhoto collection contains just under 16,000 photos.  But iPhoto and related folders are consuming more than 105GB of disk space.  That seems excessive to me. 
     Here is what I see in my user folder: a Pictures folder that contains 52GB and a Rebuilt Library folder that contains 53GB. When I look at the package contents of each folder, they look similar.  The Pictures folder has a item named Pictures (originals) that has the iPhoto icon next to it. It said its size is 22GB. The package contents also incude a file called Originals that is 26GB.
     Separately, back in the user folder, here is what the Rebuilt Library contains: a file marked Originals that contains 39GB.
    I suspect there is some duplication here.  But when I open iPhoto with the option key held down, the only library that comes up is the Rebuilt Library.
     So I why do I have 2 Originals folders in two sepoarate packages that contain some 65GB. And how can I figure out if it's safe to delete one of them?

you have two libraries - the original and a rebuilt one and iPhoto is much more than photos - it has two or three version of each photo plus support files - what version of iPHoto do you have?
check each of them and if you do not need both delete the unneeded one

    iPhoto and Lightroom are similar apps - although LR is a far more capable app - and that the price it should be, of course. But the two apps are similar in that they both offer
    Photo Management
    Non-Destructive Processing
    So, essentially, they both play the same part in the workflow.
    The procedure would be to
    Download the images from the camera into the Photo Manager (regardless of which one you choose)
    Review and select in the Manager
    Trash the unwanted with the Manager
    Process the images - that is, in most cases edit them.
    It is at this point - and only this point - that Photoshop might come into play. Both of these apps can act as a 'front-end' for Photoshop - after all, they're the Managers. But in truth, if you're using Lightroom then you very likely do not need Photoshop at all, and for anything that does require layers you can use one of the many - much less expensive - alternatives. But I think the common experience is that with Lightroom (like Aperture) the requirement for the sledgehammer that is Photoshop really fades away.
    So pick one horse and ride it. Choose between LR and iPhoto. Use it like it's intended. Don't get involved in other necessary apps. Don't review before bringing the photo into the manager - that's what the manager is for.

  • Macbook Pro hard drive space issue - iPhoto not responding

            I have a MacBook Pro running snow leopard. Has got two user accounts on it. Comes up with 29 Gb remaining on the internal hard drive. IPhoto was not responding in my wife's account. I think the hard drive space is the issue here. I have had a number of attempts to get the "29 Gb remaining" changing to a higher figure but those attempts do not increase that figure.
          I did keep trying to securely remove trash, by removing some of the events in my iPhoto first, and removing the iTunes libraries of both accounts. When securely emptying the trash, it came up with 27,000 items to delete, and took all night. On re-starting the laptop, the "29 Gb remaining" was unchanged. Any tips to get this figure up, and be able hopefully to access my wife's iPhoto account ? Then try from there.
           I got an iMac running iTunes with the libraries there. So I need no music in the laptop.

    I started up the laptop today. Finder showed there was 65 Gb available . Maybe takes a day or two to bed in, any changes from securily emptying the trash. Fired up iPhoto, had a beach ball for 10 seconds, holding my breath "here we go again"...... then it stopped spinning . The application was then alright. Works okay this evening.

  • IPhoto using up my hard drive.  Solutions?

    Hello!
        I am running iPhoto on my Macbook Air which obviously has a limited amount of storage space.  I've been importing pictures to it in iPhoto and I've ended up filling up my hard drive.  I think one of my primary problems is that I've been taking pictures from my DSLR camera and since the format is RAW, the pictures are huge.  I've changed my camera to use JPEG compression, because I don't think I need raw images.  But now I'm kind of stuck trying to figure out how to compress my photos within iPhoto.
        I've read through the forums and I know that I can export my pictures and compress them to JPEG and resize.  But what I really need to do, in order to save my hard drive as well as my photos, is to compress and possibly resize all the Original Files that iPhoto is indexing.  I've only got about 2GB of wiggle room at this point.  Is there a good way to batch compress and resize these photos within iPhoto?  Or do I need to use something like Image Magick and hope that iPhoto will still be okay with the changes?
        Another idea I had was to maybe use some kind of cloud storage for my iPhoto pictures.  Is this a viable way to deal with my hard drive issues?   I don't mind paying a monthly fee to save my pictures.  I just want to make sure things won't get screwed up with my iPhoto library and that the service won't cache too much on my local hard drive.
        I would appreciate any advice on this problem.  Thanks Apple Community.

    There is no way to compress your original files in iPhoto. End of story.
    This is a major concern:
    I've only got about 2GB of wiggle room at this point.
    OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
    Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
    Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
    Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
    For instance: to move your iphoto Library:
    Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

    Yes, this is a repost from my thread in the getting started forum, but I figured that this board is more heavily populated, and perhaps some professional videographers visit here more frequently to help me out, so I'm posting my question here as well. Here I go:
    Hello,
    Next spring and summer, I plan to be shooting and editing weddings. The past weddings I've done, I use about 12 tapes. ~200mb/min x 60 mins x 12 tapes is about 144GB. That's about 3 weddings in a single 500GB hard drive (and I plan on doing about 20 in a year). Obviously, I'm going to need a LOT of hard drive space. I don't want to consider entirely deleting the media after finishing a project because it seems common that clients wish to change little bits of the video, so I want to keep them for a while longer.
    Right now I have a 500GB HD in a firewire400 enclosure. I don't use the internal Mac HD for media.
    What a photographer said that others wedding videographers do and suggested to me was to buy as many HD's needed for the year (approx. so I guess about 7 if 500GB), set a deadline for those whiny clients for returns or re-edits and such, and at the end of the year, and reformat them all and reuse them for the next year.
    I'm thinking of doing the same, but using the same enclosure for all my hard drives, just unplugging and plugging as needed.
    I've heard of using a RAID system. I can't say I know much about using it but with what I'm using, I don't think it's an option? I am using a 17" 2.33ghz MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro and I plan on getting an aluminum 24" iMac (probably 2.4ghz unless you can convince me otherwise) as a secondary editing machine, and perhaps to make the dreadful capturing process twice as fast.
    So some of my questions are:
    * can plugging and unplugging HD's to an external closure possibly damage the pins?
    * would storing HD's that are not being used at the moment be safe in those plastic containers that usually come with a HD when you buy one? Or would it be damaging to keep one in there and store it away for a year?
    * is this idea okay or would you suggest another method?
    * slightly off-topic but sometimes I take my external hard drive, put it in my laptop bag, and do some editing at another location. I know it's supposed to be portable but someone told me that external hard drives aren't meant to be taken around like that. Is that true or am I okay? It's just sitting sideways in the bag while I walk/drive, it's not like I'm hiking a mountain and dropping my bag.

    Not sure if they will or not. Of course, IMO, it is not bad to have an extra Power Adapter and cables (or more), just in case. You would be suprised how things can get misplaced or when you really would like another FW or eSATA cable. You can call some of these places and ask, it nevers hurts. I have had very good experiences with Firewiredirect, OWC/MacSales and Wiebetech, probably worth a customer service IM window with them or call or email. Worst they can say it is not possible.
    - Alternatively the Wiebtech SilverSata I enclosure seems pretty convenient and maybe I'll expand it with 6-8 additional trays...but again I may want to use another HD in another computer but I'm sure I can figure a way around that...
    If you get a G5 or MacIntel they all use the same drives so if you remove it from a tray you can put it in the computer. I like the SilverSata I because it is relatively small and light and I will often throw a 750gig Drive into a tray when traveling to have a place to capture things and keep copies of photo downloads, audio files for Soundtrack and other files which take up room and a partition for a boot/repair/restore disk for the laptop.

    First time posting a question.
    So I have an iBook g4. My problem has to do with my Hard Drive. I am down to my last 2GB of hard drive space --oh no! What do I do to get more hard drive space??? I LOVE DOWNLOADING PODCASTS TO LISTEN TO WHEN I'M RELAXING AND DL MUSIC AND PHOTOS. I LOVE MY MAC and I'm really stupid when it comes to technical computer stuff. But i'm willing to do ANYTHING to keep my files intact. I need some help...

    Hi Heyitsme and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    "First time posting a question".. and a very good one it is too. You are sailing very close to the wind with only 2 GB of free space. !0% of free space is considered to be the absolute bare minimum with 15% or greater considered to be ideal.
    In the long term you need to consider getting an external drive to store, perhaps, your iTunes library if it is large, and/or your iPhoto library. A better long term solution would be to, not only have an external for back up, but also have a larger internal drive installed. I believe 250 GB is the current largest size available for iBooks which require a PATA/EIDE 2½" drive. The drives themselves are relatively inexpensive, the installation more expensive unless you feel confident in DIY. Post back if you require more info.
    In the short term you need to clear some space if only for the immediate health of your HD, OSX, and your data.
    There are a few quick fixes that you can do immediately with no ill effects.
    For example, on my iBook, I have removed GarageBand from Applications and its Loops from HD/Library/Application Support. As my iBook only has a combo drive and I'm not into video editing anyway I have trashed iDVD & iMovie. (Not DVD player). I have also trashed preloaded games and World Book, and its associated files.
    OS X comes with a vast library of printer drivers, the large proportion of which will never be used by the average user.
    Printer drivers are in the HD/Library/Printers folder. You can safely delete any named drivers that you don't have a printer for. For example, if you have a Canon, you can remove Epson, Lexmark, Hewlett Packard & Brother drivers. Epson alone takes up close to 1gb. You can even remove specific drivers from within the manufacturer's folder. For example, if you have an Epson C86 you can safely trash any other specific drivers in the Epson folder like C46, C66 etc. If, at a later date, you buy a printer whose driver you removed they can be added from your install disk, the disk that comes with the printer or downloaded.
    A word of warning: More cautious heads than mine advise against messing in the HD/Library, but if you stick to the examples above, i.e. GarageBand loops, World Book and printer drivers you will be OK.
    Certainly, I have had no problems with my system after removing those examples.
    Check, too, in your music folder. If you have 'Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library' selected in iTunes preferences/Advanced it is possible that you have, say, 'xyz song' in the first level of your Music folder and the same song in Music/iTunes/iTunes Library. If you are sure that you do have 'xyz song' in iTunes, it is safe to delete from 'Music'. The same principle can apply to your Pictures folder and iPhoto Library, but staying with iTunes for a moment, with iTunes open select Edit in the menu bar, then 'Show duplicate songs'. You can trash duplicates if you are sure that they are true duplicates, i.e. exact name, artist and file size. Another little note of caution, neither iTunes nor iPhoto likes having its library messed with from within a Finder window. Resolve duplicates from within the respective application only.
    If you are downloading a lot of stuff it is possible that you have a large 'Incomplete' folder built up over time from aborted downloads. This folder can be found in your 'Home' folder. It is perfectly safe to remove any and all files from this folder.
    Downloaded applications can be a cause of wasted space. An application is usually downloaded as a .DMG (Disk Image). Once the app is installed in your Applications folder there is no necessity to keep the .DMG, although if it is a 'paid for' app it would be wise to back it up to an external/burn to a CD before removing it from your internal. Sometimes apps are downloaded as .zip files, leaving two largely redundant duplicates of the same thing. Again, back up one or the other file type to another medium before trashing if the app is paid for or difficult to find again.
    Some excellent advice has been posted by ~JB~ , with corresponding words of caution.
    Edit: The application Whatsize, linked to in ~JB~'s advice above, used to be a free application. It is now shareware, though I believe it is still free to use on smaller drives such as yours. You can get similar information using Finder, however.
    Open a new Finder window, select Command (⌘) 2, for list view, then Command (⌘) J. Check the 'This window only' button and the 'Size' and 'Calculate all Sizes' boxes. Wait a few moments while it 'calculates'. You should be able to see which folders are taking up the most space. DO NOT REMOVE OR MESS WITHIN THE "SYSTEM" FOLDER or, with the exception of GarageBand loops and printers, the Library folder.
    Dr Smoke has some advice here too.
    Last but by no means least, when you have finished dumping your unwanted stuff in the trash, don't forget to empty it. You haven't regained the space until you do
    …and definitely last this time: If in doubt leave it alone and ask!

    I've gone from Blu ray to iTunes HD download which has free at the front room cabinet space only to fill up my MacBook Pro hard drive space.
    So is there a exturnal hard drive solution that I can store all my films on?
    Also can I brun my Blu ray's that are not triple play to Mac? (Mac has no Blu Ray drive)

    first open macintosh HD
    then go to users and select your name
    then copy the folder labeled music to the external drive
    then open itunes
    click itunes then preferences
    click advanced then click change
    and locate the folder labeled itunes music on the external drive
    then click choose the click ok
    and now check to see if it worked

    The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
    If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.

  • How do I delete Photo Stream photos that are taking up hard drive space in my Masters folder, but not actually appearing in any event, or on the interface at all?

    A couple months ago, I activated photo stream using my apple ID. I was under the impression that all the photos uploaded to my photo stream would only use server space on icloud and wouldn't actually utilize disk space, or at the most, the option was available to only download specific photos to my hard drive. My hope was that I could upload the photos to a specific drive, and view the uploaded thumbs or low-res comps on any device as a reference.
    This is not the case.
    What I have found is that iphoto has been automatically downloading any and all photos uploaded to my photo stream. Not just the thumbnails, the entire thumbnail + all resolutions. I shoot RAW photos so in my case, the original averages about 15-25MB per photo.
    I have been uploading directly to an iphoto library on an external hard drive specifically designated for handling all my RAW high-res images.
    What has been happening is all those RAW files are also being uploaded directly to my iphoto library on my iMac and eating up memory which I cannot reclaim, even after deactivating my Photo Stream in preferences. We're talking almost 100 GB of memory is tied up right now.
    I don't want to just go in and start deleting files and folders in my Masters folder, since I have heard this will break iphoto, but the photos in my photostream do not show up in any event and I need to reclaim the hard drive space.
    How can I safely delete them?

    If the files are loose inside the iPhoto library package here's one way to get them out:
    1 - open your library, select all of the photos in the library and add a unique keyword, XXXX,  to all of them.
    2 - Rebuild the library with  iPhoto Library Manager  as follows:
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
    2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
    3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
    4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
    5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
    Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
    Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
    3 - open the library, create a smart album with the criterial "Keyword is not XXXX".
    4 - the smart album will include those photos that were not visible in your original library. Select them and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin.
    5 - empty the iPhoto Trash bin via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash Bin menu option.
    6 - empty the Trash bin in the Dock to remove the files from your hard drive completely.
    Be sure to read Note 1 above.  You can use the new library without your books, slideshow, etc. and it will not  contain those errant files.  Of course delete the original library if the new one is satisfactory.

    My wife has a 14" iBook. How do I find what's using all the hard-drive space? It only has a 40GB hard-drive (it's one of the older G3 models) but there isn't a lot loaded onto the HD. There is only 3GB space left. I've gone through every application and utility and document and every folder (document, movie, etc.) and the largest space-hogging folder is iTunes which uses 15GB because of the music. I can't find any singular folder that uses any sizeable HD space. I recently loaded Tiger so I don't know if Tiger uses the rest of the space or if it's just a combo of all the other applications.

    You could download and use WhatSize to see what may be eating up the space.
    With a 40 GB hard drive, you need to keep at least 6 GB free in order to avoid problems.

    I have an intel macbook pro with 500 internal HD.
    I have 160gb of music in my itues folder with another 7gb on a previous library, I am unable to find the size info of my applications folder but I susspect it to be around 50gb, however I only have 59 gb of free HD space remaining. How to I find out what is using the remainder od my hard drive space? I have not yet checked my iphoto. where would this be? Is there someway of checking to see what folders are the bigest on my hard drive?
    I can's work out why my disk is so full.
    Any help greatly appreciated. :-)

  • Disappearing Hard Drive Space After Yosemite Update

    After installing OS X Yosemite my hard drive space has dwindled to basically nothing, rendering my computer useless.  I had at least 50 gb (maybe more) of hard drive space before updating from mavericks to yosemite.  Now, after using my computer for 30 mins or less I get an error message saying that my storage space is low. After a restart I will get about 600 mb of storage but then the cycle repeats.  Since I have upgraded to Yosemite I have not saved or downloaded any large files but there is a significant amount of storage space (104 gb) used in the other category.  It is not consistent with my usage. I initially had file vault encryption turned on but I thought maybe that was the cause of my disappearing hard drive space so I turned file encryption off and still no luck.
    Please Help!

    You are too low on drive space for iDVD to run properly. It is recommended that you try to have about 15-20 GB free for the application to run. See if you can delete anything to free up more space. Or, move more of your files to your external drive. iDVD needs to be on your computer's drive, so don't move it, or any of the iLife applications to your external drive.
    You can create iMovies on an external drive, move your entire iPhoto and iTunes libraries to external drives, but I find iDVD works better if I create its projects on my main drive. I save all of my iDVD projects as disk image files and then move those files to my external drive for saving my projects. This allows me to delete the original iDVD project and the original iMovie project used in it, which gives more free space on my drives.

  • Missing Hard Drive Space + Other Issues

    My Macbook's been acting funny lately - it wouldn't always come out of sleep, and every now and then an application would crash but its icon would stay in the Dock and there would be no way to get rid of it. When I tried typing in my password on the login screen (when it was coming out of sleep) the field would keep losing focus and delete everything in it. I have the 120GB hard drive (It says 111, but I assume that's the 1024 vs 1000 thing), and about a year and a half ago it failed, but I brought it to the Apple Store and they gave me a new one, which has been working fine.
    The macbook had been doing some weird stuff, so I've been using the computer I'm typing on for the last few weeks, but two days ago I decided to reset the PRAM and SMC and try using the macbook again. It was working fine, but then I locked the screen and did something else for a while. I went to go shut it down that night, and it wouldn't show me the login screen for unlocking the screen, and it showed me the spinning cursor instead. I just shut the top, and the next morning it was just giving me a black screen when I opened the top.
    I held down the power button to shut it off, and later in the day turned it back on again, and it seemed to be working. I was running a few applications (Firefox, Bitpim, and Transmission) when it started crashing again. The menu bar didn't work, the dock wouldn't show, keyboard shortcuts didn't work, etc. I shut the top and went somewhere for a few hours.
    I came back, and was going to shut down the computer by holding the power button, so while it was still in sleep I unplugged both of my external hard drives. When I unplugged the USB one it turned on the computer, so I opened it, typed in my password, and plugged the drives back in. The computer seemed to be working again, but about a minute later a window popped up saying my startup disk's space was low. When I'd shut the top that morning there had been around 40 - 50GB left, but now there was about 500MB left on the disk. The size of my User folder was still the same - around 20GB, and I'm trying to see the size of the System folder now, but the hard drive is being extremely slow. I'm also trying to use Disk Inventory X, but it's taking an extremely long time (like 10 minutes for a file that's only a few KB).
    The dock also seems to be "frozen" - no new applications I open show in the dock, even if I'm using them, and when I clicked to open them in finder they showed up in my recently opened folder in the Dock, but didn't actually open. I clicked on them again through that folder and they actually open, but it still doesn't show them in finder. Applications that I've quit (and their process is gone in Activity Monitor) are still in the Dock with the little dot under them that they're open.
    The Macbook is still under warranty, but I live far away from the closest Apple Store, and it would be difficult for me to get anyone to drive me there, so I'd prefer some sort of a solution where I wouldn't need to bring it in (But I know I'll probably need to, and I will be able to, just not for a week or two).
    Are any of the problems related? Is there anything I can do on my own to fix it? Should I try rebooting it, even if the hard drive is almost empty (Doesn't that cause problems booting it?), or should I wait until Disk Inventory X finishes first?
    Edit: There was a folder in /Volumes that had the name of my external hard drive, and had some files in it (The ones that were being used in Transmission), so I deleted those and got the hard drive space back. All of the other problems are still happening though - my dock is still all screwed up, etc.

    I while ago I tried rebooting and it just gave me a gray screen and played the startup chime over and over, but I held down the power button and tried again and it worked. However, when I boot it stays on the gray screen for a while before it shows me the apple logo, then it stays on that for a while before it shows me the spinning thing that it's loading. Also, once it boots it hangs on a blue screen for a while before letting me log in.
    When I look in Console there's always a million "Feb 5 18:19:58 localhost kernel[0]: Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad: family specific matching fails" for every piece of hardware from every boot.
    For a while when I tried verifying my hard drive using Disk Utility it crashed the computer. I've tried repairing permissions, checked my SMART status, and used various maintenance tools.

  • Hard Drive Space Eaten, but where? - 10.6

    I can't figure out where 120 GB of Hard Drive Space has gone.  I've scoured other similar threads, but none like this:
    1 - 451 GB are listed as being used (in Finder/About My Mac/Whatsize/Activity Monitor/etc)
    2 - outside programs, including WhatSize, list less.  For example, Whatsize (which I paid for), only finds 331 GB of used space (but lists 451 GB as "used" in the upper left corner).
    3 - commands like sudo du -hd1 only show me using 284 GB.
    I'd like to find WHERE the 120 GB is being eaten before trying to figure out WHY.  But I got into the root directory in finder anyway, and found nothing unusual. 
    More information - I'm using Snow Leopard, I was using Lion earlier but got tired of "Out of Memory" errors (when only 430 / 500 GB were shown, but all sources, as being used).  I erased the hard drive in Disk Utility and did a clean install, last week.  At that time, I was "using" 410 GB after reinstalling files- so 40 GB have gone missing just this week (I'm not doing much - No, it isn't because iTunes or iPhoto are making copies of things).  I should say, overall, the system is screaming fast and working like lightning and I'm happier (compared to Lion). 
    And finally - the first thing that happened when I bought this laptop was that I had a logic board failure.  Literally one day out of the box. So maybe this computer is a lemon.  This is my first Mac too.

    OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
    FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
    SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
    Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

    Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.

  • New User Account has No Hard Drive Space

    I also have a different problem and started a thread here. It was that thread that lead me to start this new one.
    One of the people helping me there suggested I make a new user account and see if that solved my problem. I made two new user accounts, one a 'standard' and the other an 'administrator.' In both cases the new user accounts have no hard drive space, and no download or document folder in the dock.
    Logging out of either of those accounts and back as myself (administrator) I have 410 gb of free hard drive space.
    Any thoughts on what could be happening or how to resolve? My hard drive recently disappeared so I took it in to a Mac Genius and under AppleCare the hard drive was replaced. I did a full restore from Time Machine and have repaired permissions countless times since then and also run DiskWarrior. Repair Permissions returns a message that Apple has posted can be ignored; no other issues. DiskWarrior found two errors related to directory structure and repaired/replaced them. Other than my original problem and this new one regarding the new user accounts having no hard drive space my system runs fine.
    I am running Mac OS X 10.5.5.

    Sorry I wasn't clear in the first post. On my way into work today I started thinking it may be time to start over as well. You mentioned archive and install - would a clean install be better (I know it will be longer)?
    Also, just for clarification - when I did a Full Restore from Time Machine was that the same as say restoring from a program like SuperDuper (that clones the hard drive)?
    My thinking on this is if I do clean install, I should not restore from Time Machine if the structure carries over. That could be what is causing these problems. Instead I should back up my iPhoto and iTunes libraries via the built in back-up (to an external hard drive or DVDs), back up any documents, etc. and then really start over. Do a clean install, then reload 3rd party software from the original disks and restore the iPhoto and iTunes libraries, etc.
