IPhoto huge file...need help clearing space

Hi, I have a 47G iPhoto library file on my Air.  Its taking up too much space on my HD and I need to free some up.
I have researched some of the solutions like deleting my iPod Cache file but there are no files there....
I am an amature when it comes to file storage so I need some help.  I have an external hard drive I can use, have iCloud, have time capsule, just dont want screw up my photo files by moving them incorrectly.

This may help: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html

  • Need help clearing space on start up disk

I've had messages pop up before saying that I needed to clear space on my MacBook Pro (I've had it since 2009), so i've been trying to get rid of as much as possible to clear up space. I've managed to free up some space however the availability keeps changing about 10 minutes ago it said I had around 10 GB of space and it just changed to 1.13 GB. I feel like i've done everything I possibly can to get more space; not only have I gone throughf and deleted almost everything from my computer, but i've also run disk repairs too. Nothing seems to help. I'd like to upgrade my OS x Snow Leopard to OS x Mountain Lion, but at this point I don't have enough memory to do so. If anyone has any suggestions I would love the help.
    Thanks!

Down load from the Internet OmnioDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show all of your files and the respective sizes.  Delete what you do not want.  you may find that you have more room than you think.
To corroborate the actual space on your MBO, you can click COMMAND I (the letter i) on the HDD icon on your desk top and it will show a display showing space used and available.  This ca also be seen on Disk Utility.
    Ciao.

  • I need to clear space on my mac and have 2 other devices I need space on- IpHone and Ipad.  I have Itunes match.  If I delete the library from my computer, how can I play music from the cloud on all devices.  S

I am almost out of space on my mac and Ipad.  Need to clear songs off, but afraid I won't be able to listen without going to my external hard drive.  I have Itunes match but don't know how they are accessed from the cloud.  Thoroughly confused and frustrated.  Hope someone can help.
Another question is my Iphotos are taking up tons of space and I don't know if they are in cloud or best way to back up.  Any thoughts?

If you have iTunes Match, and your music is in your Match library, you can access it from iCloud on all your devices, provided they are signed into your iTunes Match account.  Make sure you keep a backup of your music somewhere though as the match process isnt' perfect and you may find that some of your iTunes Match music isn't exactly the same as the original (see https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4112).
The best way to back up your photos is to import them to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  If you are out of room on your Mac, get an inexpensive external drive to save your photos on.

  • IPhoto crashing mac need help!!!

I recently got a 2010 macbok pro 15" with i7 dual core processor i have been using iphoto since i got it but now iphoto is crashing my computer allowing me to do nothing but restart it with the power button. I need help please i have reinstalled the software nothing works any help would be greatly appreciated.

Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library. If you can then we know the problem is with your current library.
If that's the case make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library the apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.dbt, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that doesn't help try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I wanted to erase my file, cause I hv about 65 G in my user disk, but I can't open my file. need help

The advice you've received previously seems pretty solid, so let's troubleshoot the problem.

Let's concentrate on this portion of text only.
Gray screen: usually means non-woriking or uninstalled HD
Won't repair: makes perfect sense, since you no longer have access to HD
Advised to copy HD and Leopard installation to a new drive, then erase the HD and reinstall: This is the most important text. It seems you don't use a backup drive. And since your HD is damaged/not working, you need to do the following: (1) remove the faulty drive, (2) install the new drive, (3) when you turn on your MBP, you may need to erase the newly installed HD, and this is where you have the problems. Describe, in detail, what's happening on your MBP screen. Is it still gray? What message are you getting? Where is it asking you for a password, and when?
I'm intereste: since your MBP drive is dead, how are you accessing this forum?

  • My startup disk is full. I need help clearing up some space.

It says 12.6 GB of movies; I don't know where these movies are. I don't have any downloaded. How can I find them to delete them?
I have also deleted all of my photos except three and it still says 11.44 GB. That docen't seem right either.
When I search my computer, files in Dropbox come up. But I thought those weren't included in my computer?  (There are no movies on there, either.)
Sorry for the multiple parts of a question. I can't even download an update.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Need iPhoto/Elements file system help please

I have over 8000 photos in various albums in iPhoto 9.
Some photos show up in multiple albums. I assume the various album pics are linked to the one actual picture file on the hard drive.
If I export one album at a time to Elements, will It actually save multiple copies of the same file on the hard drive?
    Thanks for your help!
    Len

iPhoto'09 allows you to import the albums/events selectively. However iPhoto'011 does not allow that from Elements Organizer.
In iPhoto'09. if you have organized your photos without selecting the preference of copying files in iPhoto library during import, which means, your iPhoto library keeps the references of the images. In such case if you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, organizer does not create separate copies.
But yeah in case of iPhoto'011, it does.

  • XML Huge database files, NEED HELP !!!

    Hello to the community.
We need to store about ONE MILLION XML FILES inside the database.
BUT we need to use all functionality of XML Structure to look for
    information inside these files (CONTAINS).
    My question is:
What is the best way to store them:
like XML files inside CLOB ?
or fragment the files inside tables ?
    Using ConText Option ?
    Using CONTAINS functions ?
Is ConText Option supports CONTAINS function ?!?
We have many queries with text searching...
What is the best way to store this so we have best velocity to
    acces to the info ?

Let me try and answer your question. First the CONTAINS
operator in Intermedia Text (formerly Context) will allow you to
search for data between tags of an XML document stored as a
CLOB. Whether you should distribute your XML documents across
tables is largely a function of how you want the data searched
retrieved. Currently the XML search function operates within a
column and thus if you want the entire doc back it would be best
to store it as a whole. Once iFS is released you will be able
to distribute the doc across tables and return it as a whole or
    in parts.
    Chack out http://www.oracle.com/database/options/ifs.htm and
    http://www.oracle.com/database/options/intermedia.htm for more
    details.

  • Disk Full problem, likely related to extraneous printing files - need help!

I won't go into all the details, but have noticed that over the past couple of months, I've been losing space from my internal 500gb drive at surprising clips. After hard disk full warnings recently, eliminated about 50gb by dumping to dvds. Surprisingly, then again this weekend, hard disk full warnings.
Using 10.3.9 to search for files over a certain size, e.g., 100MB, I was still baffled at why my disk was full, as there weren't enough large files to justify filling up the 500gb (couldn't figure out how to do a search by folder size that gave meaningful results). Decided to do a backup to my 500 gb external HD using SilverKeeper v1.1.3, and noticed that there are thousands or tens of thousands of files in the path HD/Previous Systems/var/tmp/xxxxxxxxxxx. not sure of the number of digits but many have numbers like 490ca.....or 490d03f......(since I've been looking, it looks like all start with the 490..., but vary after that, although might not be watching closely enough). After about 50gb of new data was copied, I aborted the copy operation.
Other observations: oddly enough appears the vast majority (at least the ones I was looking at being copied) are at the same size of 2.322 MB or 184KB. Also, took me awhile to figure out, but these are hidden files. When I search using the finder for invisible files with the name "490" I get results of over 17000 files (less than number of files copied using SilverKeeper) and the file sizes are 2.2MB or 184KB (maybe these are the same due to rounding). These are identified in the path HD/private/var/tmp/490xxxxx..... these appear to be different than what I observed during the HD copying (again, I wasn't looking the whole time). Almost all of these 17k+ files were written during 8 hours on Nov. 1, 2008 - looks like dozens per minute, and when I select all, get info, amount to over 20.44 GB, so maybe still not all the files I saw in my aborted copy operation. All of these files appear to be of the "Document" kind. at the end of this post are excerpts from some of the files. Appear to be related to pdf printing.
I cant' tell where all these files are, what they are, or how they got there. I've reviewed a bunch of the articles on discussion boards, and can't find any direct solutions (at least that would appear to help with this situation). Of course I simply want to delete these apparently duplicative and meaningless files. Any help appreciated!

    Hi Peter,
Why these temporary files are being created I don't know, but there is some malfunction in your printing system (software side).
Have you tried simply trashing those files from the Finder, or do you think there are too many of them to do it manually?
    _Manual method:_
Open Finder > Go > Go to folder, and type in
    /var/tmp
Then you can select them in groups and drag them to the trash.
You will be asked for your Admin password each time you move some to the trash.
Every so often empty your trash, to regain the space.
Another method is to use the Terminal Application, but some people are a bit wary of that application. Ask for directions if you are willing to try that.
Having removed those files, monitor your printing, or save as .pdf actions, and check again that folder in Finder to try and locate which action or process is responsible for creating those runaway temporary files there, because they are likely to be created again.

  • I can't get my print widget to display certificate in PDF file, need help.

I can get my certificate to display with all the variables on the slide, inserted my print widget which asks for a location to save the pdf file. I save it, open it and its blank.
    Any suggestions?

Centering an entire page's worth of content is pretty simple, but not as simple as adding align:center to the css of every element.
You likely need to remove a bunch of stuff from your css if that's what you were trying. Seeing the page is going to be the best way to tell you how to fix it.
Many people will use a container like <div id="wrapper"> to center their page, so that's what I'll use in the example. Here is the css that would go in your page's <style> tags, or in your external .css file...
    #wrapper {
         width:950px;
         margin:0 auto;
    Then in the html...
    <body>
    <div id="wrapper">
         all of your page's content
    </div>
    </body>
What this does is creates a 950 pixel wide wrapper around all of your content (the pixel amount isn't as important as the fact that there is a width that is less than 100%). The browser then sets the left and right margin to the same setting using all of the available horizontal space by setting the left and right margins to auto. Basically, if the browser viewport is wider than the wrapper div (anything more than 950 pixels in this example), the left and right margin will split that remaining amount between themselves and center your content.

  • Error downloading video (corrupted file) need help

I began to download the new quicksilver snowboarding film "That's it That's All" and when i was about halfway through the download i got an error message pop up saying that the file was corrupted and to choose the "check for available downloads" under the "store" tab to fix it. but after doing this numerous times i still am not able to download the video fully and its stuck about halfway. does anyone know how to fix this?
(by the way, the error report code is 8008 if anyone cares.)

    Hello
    I repeat my offer.
Not only because I wish to try to help you but because I wish to be able to understand what is the source of the oddity.
I'm afraid because I found on these forums some messages about corrupted files.
As my brain is not so large than Apple's offices, I join together these reports and the description of some encountered oddities of iWork products used under Mac OS X 10.5.
At this time I don't know which is the wrongdoer but it's clear that the relations between the apps and the OS are not perfectly correct.

  • Merging Files --- Need Help

    Greetings,
I am pretty new at this program, and I am trying to understand how to do my homework assignment. So I do not need the full code, just some help on how to get started.
I am trying to write a program that merges all files together whose names match a certain pattern, and writes the result to an output file. The input-file pattern will consist of a combination of "normal" filename characters and question marks (?). A question mark in the input-file pattern denotes a single-character "wild card". Thus, the pattern ab?c?.txt would denote all file names that consist of 9 characters such that:
the first two characters are ab
    the fourth character is c
the last four characters are .txt
For example, this would include filenames such as abxc7.txt and abqcc.txt.
So if there are files in a folder, for example, called abc.txt, adc.txt, cat.txt, and the contents of each has two similar lines of "This is File ZZZ" Where ZZZ represents the name of the file. Then running the program with the pattern a??.txt and the output file finished.txt will result in the file finished.txt having the contents
    This is file abc.txt.
    This is file abc.txt.
    This is file abd.txt.
    This is file abd.txt.
I don't really know where to begin here. Could you help me out? Thanks

  • Horrible sync with my Music / iTunes Files - Need help!

    Hi,
iam very frustrated about options forsyncing media files:
BB Link is not working right or it so **bleep** slow, that 40GB needs 2 days to sync!!!! 2 days????
After syncing 1 album that was bought in iTunes - i missed some files on my phone, so album is not complete.
Why is BB Z10 not playing DRM files ?
    Then i tried next way:
Plugged with my Mac and drag and drop directly Music Album to SDCard. After fast transfer, on my Z10 - Music PLaylist is completely destroyed. That means: Music files are not in row and mixed inside.
Also if you transfer next Album into separate folder, it will not divided on Z10 and all transfered Albums mixed into 1 Playlist! Why?
Iam not able at this moment to transfer 45GB of my bought music to Z10.
    That is very frustrating device.
    For me: No go Blackberry!
    Solution?
btw.: I buyed software to remove DRM - but that cannot be the only solution. Iam sitting weeks for transfering/checking files to my Z10.
Iam shortly to sell it on Ebay.
Blackberry: user dont want to be frustrated by their device, it must work. WORK.
    Alex

Regarding DRM in iTunes, Apple will only let you sync music purchased in their store with DRM protection to iOS devices. A free way to remove the protection is to burn the music to cd and them reimport it to iTunes. As to your other issues, I''m afraid I can't help.
