Iphoto image edit and slidewhow
In iphoto, I cannot open an image for editing. I have a default to have it open in photoshop, but suddenly it does not work. Photoshop will open, but the whole iphoto library goes with it. The individual image will not open.
Also, my slideshows do not work. They show a black screen only. Help!!!!

You can move the folder wherever you want. You have to move it when iPhoto is closed. I am not sure if moving it and putting it back made this happen though.
Let's just create a new library and import the images from the old library. This should get you back in gear again. I am not sure why you are having this problem but once you have a new library we can rule out corrupt data files and see what happens.
Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.

save as Index (8bit), copy, Paste as Background.
I've not had a problem with unreasonable file sizes with that
method,
but should I, will just save the bmp then import into the CP
project.

IPhoto images edited in Aperture?
It is pretty easy now to open the iPhoto browser in Aperture and editing images from the iPhoto library in Aperture. Once done with the edits, however, is it possible to return the Aperture preview to iPhoto or flag the image in iPhoto to indicate it was edited in Aperture?
Thanks.I do not use Aperture so can not test or verify this - any there may be an even better way but iPhoto can have any editing program set in the preferences as the external editor - I assume that this would include Aperture and that once you have edited in Aperture you would save (not save as) to return the photo to iPhoto and have iPhoto update the thumbnail and place the edited photo in the modified folder
To do this go to the iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> general as set the edit photo menu to external editor and point to Aperture - double clicking on a photo (or selecting it and clicking edit ) will sent the photo to the external editor for editing - saving in the external editor will return the photo to iPhoto
I also believe that Aperture can be set to reference the iPhoto library but am not sure how that would work for letting iPhoto know that a photo had been edited - it seems like it might be a problem
Several advanced users here use both - more probably to come

i am an iPhone Developer,
i want to edit an image using another image you can say that i want to paste a smaller image(in size)
on to the larger one and then want to save this image and wants a single image as a result.
i did the code for imposing image on to the first one and even code for saving image to the photo gallery but i am getting stuck with one issue, that is:
while saving the image we have to give the image reference as the first parameter to the following method..
UIImageWriteToSavedPhotosAlbum( UIImageView.image, self, @selector(imageSavedToPhotosAlbum: didFinishSavingWithError: contextInfo, nil);
and the problem i am facing is
there is one UIImageView object for the UIView and while using UIImageView.image i get the first image not the mixed image that i want.
please help me for getting the desired image.

Transfer photos from iPhone to mac without iPhoto / image capture and preview doesn't see device
Hello. I'd like to transfer photos from my iPhone to my Mac. I read (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083) that iPhoto is the standard application for that; I'd like to do without. I read that image capture (http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/8954/copy-photos-off-iphone-without-iph oto) or even Preview (http://osxdaily.com/2010/07/10/transfer-photos-from-iphone-to-computer/) could help. Neither of them see my iPhone although cable connected and iTunes does. So my question is two: If Preview and Image Capture are ineed supposed to, why don't they? And is there any other way?
ThanksI dont like iphoto so the easiest way to do it is using image capture, just plug in your iphone launch image capture from your applications folder and import all images or just selected images into any folder you want.

Iphoto image sizes and printing
I am new to digital photography and printing using iPhoto. The default size I am getting upon importing from my DSLR is 3888 x 2592 (original). What is this scale? What print size will this equate to? I understand the 4x6 and 8x10 size options, but not the 3888 x 2592.
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This measurement is in pixels, which is what your screen is made up of, so your photo is 3888 pixels by 2592.
Inches mean nothing on a computer screen, they only come into play when you move into the real world by printing.
As to what size this will print at... Well that depends on what dpi you choose. Dpi means “dots per inch” but Pixels Per Inch is a better description. It refers to the density of pixels on an inch of paper. So, if you choose 1 pixel per inch your print will be 3,888 inches by 2,592 inches. (and look awful). Most folks reckon that 180 dpi is a minimum and even more reckon on 300 dpi for acceptable prints.
So if you divide those pixels by 300 to get a 300dpi print, then you can see that you will get a good quality 12 x 8 inch print. If you're happy to work at 180 dpi then you can achieve a 21 x 14 inch print.

Rotation of images imported and exported from Aperture
Hi all,
Recently whilst on Holiday I used my iPad as a storage for the camera via the camera kit. When I got home I synced the iPad with the Mac to get the images into iPhoto, and then imported them into Aperture.
This is where the first problem occurred. A large number of the portrait orientated images came into Aperture upside down ????
So I selected and rotated all the incorrect ones in Aperture then carried on to sort and process them. Mostly removing the "raw, iphoto image" keywords and some cropping and tinting etc.
Then I went to iTunes and did a sync of the photos in Aperture back to the iPad (I had wiped them from the iPad after the import into iPhoto).
Again a large number of the images rotated themselves so that now they are upside down on the iPad.
It would appear that either the import or sync to iPad, or both has got something wrong.
Does anyone have any idea what to do? The images look correct now in Aperture, but are incorrect on the iPad.
Grrr!Not easy to explain as i don't understand fully the details of what goes on myself, but the basics. Most cameras sense rotation, but only add a marker to tell the computer how to display the image, Some programmes see this, some don't, so you then rotate in iPhoto, then move to Aperture, and the programme now may see multiple instructions on how to display the image. Yours and the cameras. I have had this kind of problem in the past and it is very frustrating.
The Masters only have one set of information or none on older cameras. If you use the masters to put in to Aperture then do your edits you should not have this problem. If you correct this by exporting and re importing the jpeg you will loose image quality.

LR3 - Retaining image edits between 2 computers using USB Hard Drive
Hi guys,
I'm having troublewith syncing edits to my images between 2 computers that I'm using and wondered if you can help.
I have a desktop mac which is my main computer for image editing and also a Macbook. I don't store any images on either machined hard drives, I use a portable USB drive so that I can plug it into either computer.
I do most of my image edits on my desktop mac but then when I plug the hard drive into my laptop, the images are just as they were off the camera with no edits.
I need to be able to sync the edits so that when I plug the hard drive into the macbook, the edits are shown.
I do wedding photography and make the edits on my desktop and then would like to be able to take my laptop to visit my clients and show them the edited images.
Please could someone explain to me how to do this.

Image editing selection tools in Aperture 2?
Are there any image editing selection tools in Aperture 2 (Magic Wand, selection box etc.)? If not, you can't make any corrections without effecting the whole picture. I guess that would just send you back to Photoshop or Elements for image editing, and then you might as well stay in the Adobe world.
This isn't what Aperture is designed for. The features you are asking about are not really photographic in nature - they are image manipulations that go beyond what Aperture is designed to do.
Think of Aperture more as a catalog that allows photographers to make the vast majority of adjustments they need to make to single images (contrast, exposure, white balance, dust spots, minor clone/patching, etc.). It also provides strong keywording and search capabilities.
Folks who need to do advanced image manipulations/compositing etc. will have to do it in PhotoShop, but they will lose the "library" functions found in Aperture. Lightroom is the same way - you have to export your pic's to PhotoShop to do serious editing/layers, etc. -
Can I use iPhoto to view and edit images not stored in the iPhoto Library

I'm a newbie to Mac after 20+ years on PC...just switched 2 weeks ago....wish I'd done it years ago. Everythings so easy and fast...e.g. setup wireless broadband in 25 mins with no probs....and I have never done anything like that.
Here's my Q.
I have a load of images, downloads and scans, of old manuscripts, authors etc. which I don't really want in my iPhoto library (which I would like to keep for actual photos. Is it possible to point iPhoto to another location (say in Documents) where it will let me view and edit these images without importing them into the library.
Alternatively can I view images as thumbnails in this other locations, and not as default file type icons.

iPhoto 5 imports all images into it's own database. (this has changed with iPhoto 6 so you might want to check out iLife 6)
The other files you want to view but not have in the library...are they image files?
If so, you can view that folder as icons and then make the icons larger so you can see what they are.
To do this open the folder in question. click the first icon on top of View in the toolbar. This will make that folder contents view as icons
Now go all the way to the top of your screen and click on View>show view options.
Slide the icon size slider all the way to the right to view them larger. Also make sure you have the "show icon preview" checked.
This will work most of the time, but sometimes if you edit images in other applications they might not make icon previews, so check their preferences to make sure you have that checked.
There is also a little third party program that will do it for you.
One is called Pic2Icon

HI, Hope you can help with my query. Does iPhoto automatically edit my images straight from my sd card BEFORE I import to iPhoto and edit myself?
My Photography teacher told me yesterday morning that my 'images levels ‘ are being changed by my iPhoto.
Just a couple of long shots, but there is an ever-so-slight possibility that what s/he's seeing is the result of changing the colour profile of the images? Adobe RGB to sRGB for instance? That would - or could - make the images seem a little different.
And, of course, if the images are Raws then there could also be a significant difference between the preview rendered in camera and the one rendered by iPhoto.
But in neither case would this mean the image has been edited in any way.

IPhoto images missing in Edit window after importing iPhoto albums folder
A friend of mine with new macbook tried to import her iPhoto images from an external hardrive. She move it to her user photo album and then i believe she tried to point to it after launching iphoto. She told me there were some options windows popping up and she does not remember what they said but the current result is that many of her photos do not appear when she clicks on the thumb nails to edit them: said there is a grey field with a questin mark.
My thought was to somehow repoint to the file or dump the .plst file.
Any ideas?

The question mark shows up when the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window loses the location of the file it points to.
The most common cause of this is User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
As your friend now sees.
Unless your friend nows exactly what changes she has made, I'm afraid the best way to fix this is to start again, importing from your originals folder.

Importing images edited in Photoshop into Iphoto

I tend to use Photoshop elements and bridge as my initial repository for RAW format photos. I use Bridge and Elements to select photos for editing, and storing the edited .psd file.
I also create a jpeg copy of the finished file, which I import into iPhoto. However when I do that, iPhoto uses the date that the jpeg was created, rather than the original photo date to organise into events. Any ideas how to get it to use the original photo date, which must be in the EXIF data...
ThanksTry importing the psd file into iPhoto and see if it will retain the EXIF date. That way you can use PSE from within iPHoto to make additional edits as follows:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

How do I upload pictures from iphone 5c and iPhoto for editing in photoshop elements 12 please?
I used to be able to edit all my iphoto pictures in PSE10. I set the advanced section of preferences in iphoto to edit in PSE. Since installing Photoshop Elements 12, I cannot get the transfer into PSE of the photos (unedited and unreduced) to work.
The general preferences only give a camera the options of connecting to iphoto, aperture, image capture, or, no application. Assuming my phone is a camera for editing purposes, I would like to give it the option of connecting to PSE 12.
Also, I would like to import my photos from the iphone 5C into PSE12 for editing. There is an import action in PSE12 which does not seem to work with the imac and iphone.
In addition, my email application is greyed out in the general preferences; I use Microsoft Outlook for Mac.
How can I change the settings in 'general' and 'advanced' preferences to work for me, Please?

On images that are long and narrow horizontally, iPhoto truncates them and automatically crops off part of each end of the image. the thumbnail has a jagged, serrated edge at both ends. How can I make it stop?
Then I do not get your problem - you can import the photo - you can find the photo and you can edit and save the photo - what more do you want?
By defination thumbnails are small images to help you find the large image - the large image is fine and you can find it fine - and you know it is only showing part of the image because of the "jagged ends"
If you think think that iPhoto should display long thumbnails suggest to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto Feedback
as to your digital photoframe - contact them - in general gital photos frames display one and only one aspect ratio and any photo that is not in that aspect ratio will be modified to display - either cropped to the proper size for the frame or have 'White" space added to fill the frame - that function is totally controled by the Digital Photo frame and any otptions you have will be in the manual or on the support web site for the frame - to put it in old film terms - you can not put an 8x10 print in a 5x7 frame unless you cut the photo down (or a 8x15 photo in an 8x10 frame either)
