IPhoto image loss after editing in Library

Apologies for posting question here. There was no post message button in the iPhoto discussion page. I've edited about 2 dozen images in the iPhoto Photolibrary itself. Now I know not to do that, but in the meantime I'm trying to recover lost images apparently damaged in the editing. I may have reached a memory threshold, but there was no warning. The editor indicated after each change and shift to another image that the previous changes were being saved. Not so. The thumbs for these images in the browse bar first indicated the changes I had made, but then changed back to their original orientations after a second or so. The images themselves couldn't be opened to edit. Couldn't revert to originals either. Indeed, the originals seem to have been lost in the process. Backed up the files to DVD disk and rebuilt the library (iPhoto 5.03 or .04, I think) by reopening with Command+Option held down. Now the problem thumbs have also disappeared. Is there any way to recover these images? Thanks.

HELP! iPhoto 08 Quality loss after edit!
Any edited version, no matter how minor, causes the file size to be cut in half!
    Original 3872 x 2592 is 3.1mb at 300dpi .
    Edit version 3870x2590 becomes 1.5Mb at 72dpi.
    B&W conversion 3872x2592 becomes 1.6mb at 72dpi.
Seems like a major degradation! iPhoto 6 wasn't this bad.
DPI change is not a problem but the file size change sure is!
PLEASE! any ideas before I upgrade all my files to 08. Please - don't say Aperture, it's still too slow and cumbersome. Trying to avoid Lightroom and stay within Apple sphere.

It really isn't a big degradation. There is a jpg compression when you make any edit but you might be hard pressed to see the reduction unless you're enlarging/printing the file to very large sizes. The most critical part of an image file is the number of pixels in it.
The reduction in size depends on the image content of the photos. If there's a lot of the same color, i.e. like lots of blue sky or a same color wall, that type of image will see much more compression than a very intricate photo. Also when removing the color information for a B/W conversion reduces the file size considerably. Do a Google search for jpeg compression and you'll find some very informative descriptions on how the compression is performed and what part image detail plays in the resulting file size.
You would have to compress the file a number of additional times time before you'd see the change. And with iPhoto's Revert to Original capability, you can start a new edit fresh with the untouched digital negative.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto images missing in Edit window after importing iPhoto albums folder

A friend of mine with new macbook tried to import her iPhoto images from an external hardrive. She move it to her user photo album and then i believe she tried to point to it after launching iphoto. She told me there were some options windows popping up and she does not remember what they said but the current result is that many of her photos do not appear when she clicks on the thumb nails to edit them: said there is a grey field with a questin mark.
My thought was to somehow repoint to the file or dump the .plst file.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    todd

    Todd
The question mark shows up when the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window loses the location of the file it points to.
The most common cause of this is User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
    As your friend now sees.
Unless your friend nows exactly what changes she has made, I'm afraid the best way to fix this is to start again, importing from your originals folder.
There are comprehensive instructions for moving the iPhoto Library Folder in the Help, or if you need more you can most on here.

  • After importing my iPhoto images to Aperture, edited RAW files render strangely

    Hi,
Yesterday I imported my iPhoto 09 library to Aperture 3. I have a problem with my RAW files (from a Sony Alpha 55). I have done some edits to these photos in iPhoto 9 and these edits did carry over to Aperture. Unfortunately the resulting image looks absolutely overly contrasted, I can fix most of it by turning down the Black Clipping, which is set to about 25% of the slider. I don't remember adding black clipping in iPhoto though.
Maybe someone here knows about this problem?
    Jonathan

oh, and it's iPhoto '11 not 09, sorry about that.

  • IPhoto RAW Images Compress after Editing!!

Has anyone noticed that after editing a RAW picture in iPhoto that it compresses to less than half it's size?
If I have a file that that is 11.2mb, after the edit it drops to 1.9mb.
Is this a setting I am missing?
Message was edited by: Richard Hagan

Yes, it will show a smaller size. But if you drag that thumbnail to the desktop you'll find you have a jpg file which is the results of your editing the raw file in iPhoto. What iPhoto is reporting is the file size of the jpg that will created if you need to produce an file of that edited RAW file. Until you drag it to the desktop the edit (or rather edit instructions) are kept in iPhoto's database files and iPhoto uses that information to display the edited version in iPhoto.

  • Aperture - iphoto link broken after moving Aperture Library

    Dear all,
I just moved my Aperture library as I ran out of space. I used the iphoto 11 to Aperture link ... imported some images from Aperture into iphoto. How can I tell iphoto the new location of the Aperture library for the images which are already referened in iphoto?
in iPhoto I get the message "The photo “....jpg” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found. Then it opens a file browser to point to the file ... but that's of not much use if it resides in the Aperture library!
    Thanks

    ctheisinger,
Welcome to the user-supported Aperture discussion group.
I used the iphoto 11 to Aperture link ... imported some images from Aperture into iphoto.
There is no such thing as "the iPhoto to Aperture link". You are trying to use Aperture and iPhoto together, and that will not work. You should choose one and use only that one. Aperture knows about iPhoto enough to initialize your Aperture library when you first use it. iPhoto knows enough about Aperture to be dangerous. If you use the "Show Aperture Library" function, you should really only use it to temporarily put Aperture photos into an iPhoto library *for the purpose of some function missing from Aperture*, and there are really very few. The only one that I can think of is to use Apple's printing services for cards and calendars, which is not available in Aperture. I.e., don't use both iPhoto and Aperture for digital management.
How can I tell iphoto the new location of the Aperture library for the images which are already referened in iphoto?
That is really an iPhoto question. Someone here with recent ties to iPhoto may be able to help, but we are all Aperture users first, and some posters were iPhoto users.

  • Can't get iphoto to work after tampering with library in Finder

I think I made a big mistake when I tampered with the iphoto library in Pictures in Finder.
Now I can't get iphoto to work. All the pictures are gone in iphoto, the spaces are there but they are blank.
When I open iphoto it goes into the mode (little spinning wheel appears) where I have to "force quit".
Any supggestions on what I can do? Thanks.

The list that shows is just data files and such.
You can burn the entire iPhoto Library folder.
You can burn each Year folder or any other variation.
This is my workflow. The reason I do it the way I describe is because I want a backup of just the photos and video clips I take so I can copy them to a partition of my external drive and burn them to disc. On the other partition I backup my entire users folder
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.
Here is info on backing up your photos:
    Backing up your iPhoto Library
    1. Burn the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to a CD or DVD
This method will give you a burned iPhoto Library folder that can be copied back to your computer to replace a damaged library. You can also use this method to backup an old library when you want to create a new Library to use as your current library.
insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use a DVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac
The easiest way to burn an iPhoto Library folder in the Finder that is larger than 4.7 gig to fit on one DVD is to burn sections of the folder.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
Double click the folder to open it.
Drag each Year folder to the desktop.
You should be left with the iPhoto Library folder containing all the data files, and the Year folders.
Combine whatever year folders that amount closest to a DVD burn size on one DVD. Make sure that you have burned all the Year folders, then the iPhoto Library folder with all the data files.
If you ever need to use this backup, insert the DVDs into your computer and copy the folders to the desktop. Put all the Year folders back into the iPhoto Library folder. Then put the iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder.
You can also check out applications for disc spanning:
    Disc-spanning software
    DropDMG
    Toast
    Dragon Burn 4
    BackityMac
Retrospect Express-comes with some external drives
    Retrospect for Macintosh Desktop Edition
    2. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to an external drive formated for a Mac. Do not use this as your only back up as the external can also go bad.
    3. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to your iPod in disk mode
4.Creating your own CDs and DVDs for viewing in iPhoto
This method is a great way to back up Albums of older photos or even your entire library if it is small enough to fit on a DVD. This method will give you a library that will mount within iPhoto in the source column to be viewed. To import any images from this library they need to be dragged into your library in the source column.
If you just want to backup the images in your library:
    1) Within iPhoto select the images, albums or rolls you want to backup. Go to Share>Export and export them to a newly created folder on the desktop. Follow the directions in the next link.
Creating a CD or DVD to be viewed in Windows or by a photo processing company
1.. If you backed up the entire iPhoto Library by burning within iPhoto or burning the folder in the Finder, make sure the burned copy is a good working copy before you delete the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. You delete the iPhoto Library in the finder by dragging it to the trash when iPhoto is closed. When you next launch iPhoto it will create a new empty library for you to start anew.
    2. If you burned just the images, be aware that that is all you are archiving. No metadata will travel with the images such as comments, keywords, etc.
You can then delete those images within iPhoto by highlighting them and hitting the delete key, then empty iPhoto's trash. Do this often and in groups so iPhoto will not choke on too many images.

  • Images doubled after repairing the library

    Hi there,
I had some trouble with my library.
I went through repair permissions - no probem.
Then i selected "repair library at startup" - this led to a doubling of my image count!
However, the "double" images seem to be empty, i only see white dot-lines and the same keywords as the preceding image has. All those images are found in a project "restored projects".
I have reproduced this error a few times now, i have to idea whats going on.
I have also opened the aperture library package, deleted the .xml file, and it also had no effects.
    Anybody has an idea?
of course, its newest aperture 3.03 , mac os x 10.6.4 and so on.
I have some 20.000 images in my library

alexander -- I'm sorry to hear about your problems; your frustration that Aperture is not working well for you is understandable.  Complaining about that -- or anything -- on this discussion board won't help.  We are an unaffiliated group of Aperture enthusiast who volunteer our time and expertise to help people like you make the most of Aperture.  We have no connection to Apple, Inc.  Speaking for myself, I find your attitude off-putting.
Have you tried exporting all the containers in your Library via "Export→Project as New Library"?  You should do this, of course, after (once again) weeding out the problem images.
Trouble-shooting is a painstaking process of elimination.  Eventually you'll either resolve the issue or determine that it is unresolvable.  You are not there yet.
{Added}  What are the five settings you are using for Previews (as shown on "Aperture→Preferences→Previews")?  It may be worth addressing the very long processing on closing Aperture issue separately.  When was the last time you force-quit Aperture?

  • IPhoto images reverting spontaneously (edits lost)

I'm not sure if I'm following protocol here. I started a discussion about "iPhoto Library Locked" and in attempting to solve the problem realized I have a different problem. I'm going to go ahead and post under the new heading in the hopes that it will catch the eye of someone who has solved the same problem.
In my library, my photos have started to spontaneouly revert to the original image, wiping out all of my changes. It happens when I double click to enlarge the image; I can watch the crops and edits simply melt away. If I have opened the edit window and am displaying the adjustment pane, it initally shows all the adjustments that were made and then, as it reverls, all of the sliders go back to neutral.
I have option-double-clicked when opening the file to do rebuilds on the permissions, thumbnails and the library DB, and then I've rebuilt the library DB. I tried doing a rebuild using iPhoto Library Manager (IPLM). It appeared to work correctly up to rebuilding thumbnails pretty much at the end of the process; several times during this process iPhoto quit unexpectedly - IPLM simply restarted until at one point IPLM said it was unable to communicate with iPhoto and the whole process just hung up. I had to force quit IPLM. The IPLM rebuilt library was about 27 GB whereas the original is about 30 GB.
My computer (a Mac Book Pro) is running OS 10.8.2 and the iPhoto version is 9.4.2.
Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there.
Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A Finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache. Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

  • Unable to upload from iPhoto to FB after creating new library

Two days ago I exported all my photos/videos from iPhoto 09 to an EHD.  I created a new library - Library 2012 - and since have added about 50 photos and one 2-minute video.
I can click on "email" at the bottom of my iPhoto screen and successfully send images.
However, I cannot upload photos or videos to FB.  I start on my FB page, click "add photo/video".  In the good ole days, this took me to iPhoto and I could select my image.  Since creating Library 2012, I cannot access my library through any of the links that are on the screen that appears.  I've tried the following, all leading to a dead end:
Under Media > Photos:  Nothing populates the column to the right.
Under Places > Applications > iPhoto > "preview" of iPhoto populates column to the right.  Clicking it uploads the useless "preview"
Under Places > iPhoto Library 2012 > iPhoto Library 2012.  Clicking it uploads to the useless "preview"
(Note:  I had taken screenshots of the above, to better illustrate, but was unable to upload them to this forum as well.  Frustrating much?!)
I am just at my wits' end.  Any assistance will be appreciated.  TIA!

Thanks!  Apologies for the delay in reporting back - was off-line most of the weekend.
I just ran the repair permissions with Disk utility, as suggested.  A great number of permissions differed ... but, in the end, after it was completed and I re-booted, the same issue remains with iPhoto.
I'm now running "Permission Verify" just for the heck of it.

  • Images darken after editing in both Lightroom and PS

My apologies if this topic has been recently addressed, I've canvassed both Adobe's online documentation as well as several archival pages of this thread without finding mention of it.
I'm shooting JPEGs on a D70, importing them in Lightroom. LR has been working fine for me, except when I do adjustments on a jpg and then export it to PS with the 'Export Copy with LR Adjustments' option. The image shows up fine in PS as a .psd, and I can do all my editing on it fine, but when I then save it as a jpg, the resulting file will look dark and desaturated when viewed in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, or when uploaded online. However, when viewed again in PS, the color looks fine.
This occurs whether I export the file in ProPhoto or AdobeRGB color.
Again, this issue only occurs if I edit the same file both in LR and PS. Files edited exclusively in either LR or PS look fine when saved as jpgs.
I'm a little baffled here, and obviously it's a hindrance to my workflow not being able to do edits in both programs, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Jao,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've come back to checking LR vs PS and the images look so much closer than they did last night. These are the same images without any further adjustments or change in the application prefs. I'm using two monitors but I've been viewing the images from both applications on the same monitor. My PS prefs are set-up correctly and my monitor was hardware calibrated less than a week ago.
The only thing I can put this down to is that I launched LR after changing my main monitor from one to the other in the System prefs (where you drag the white top bar across to specify which is the start-up monitor) whereas last night I seem to remember having LR already launched before I switched monitors. As the monitor profiles are slightly different for each monitor because they're not the same LR must have adjusted the way it displayed according to the monitor profile at launch time. This is my best guess.
Anyway, now I have a really good match from exporting JPG's from LR to a colour profile of sRGB so I didn't have to do any kind of conversion/adjustment/batch process in PS which is a relief as I've got 188 images I need to get printed at a lab at various sizes.
    Cheers
    Nas

  • IPhoto image deleted after rendering

I've just upgraded to iMovie HD 6.03. I have the latest version of Quicktime installed and the latest version of OSX installed.
When importing a photo from iPhoto into iMovie - using the Ken Burns effect - the photo goes black after rendering. Non-Ken Burns version goes to iMovie trash.
I've deleted the preferences file, ran disk permissions utilities and it still doesn't work. I get no errors related to graphics cards. This capability worked fine in prior versions of iMovie.
    Any additional suggestions?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   768MB SDRAM

It's a bug. As you say, when we import a photo with the Ken Burn checkbox ON, iMovie puts its copy of the source image in the iMovie Trash. If we empty the Trash the image is discarded, making it impossible to Update the clip later.

  • Ratings loss after editing in Photoshop

I have my LR3 RAW images rated a "1" star.  When I select one to edit in PHotoshop and save it, it shows back up in LR3 with no rating. This is costing me a lot of time to change my ratings to find the image and then put the rating back on.  This never used to happen in LR2. What can I do to change it? I have the box checked for automatic in the catalog settings but it still does not work.
Any fixes to this? Getting frustrated with LR3 already.

Nope, that doesn't work either. But thank you!

  • Photos go black after editing in iPhoto

I recently imported some new photos into iPhoto and edited a few slightly in iPhoto (blemishes). After editing, I viewed the event they were in and the edited photos were black. They are not black in the thumbnails but when I double-click to view larger or go full screen, the edited photos are black. After reverting to the original image of the 3 or 4 I edited, the photos return. Is this a known bug?

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
