Iphoto images on time machine backup
Hi All
Can someone tell me where to fine my photos on my time machine backup, I import using iphoto and if I 'get info' on an image from within iphoto it shows, 'Users/MacBook/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2009/Centre Parcs April 2009', however if I try to find this on my backup it just shows the 'root folder'(iphoto) icon and I'm unable to open it any further into the sub directories, what am I doing wrong?
See the pink box in #15 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Avoid using the Finder or Terminal on your TM backups; if you inadvertently change, move, or delete anything there, it can corrupt them, perhaps beyond repair.

how do I access my iphoto library on time machine backup external drive using Lion, originally saved off old computer and system. It's not letting me open the folder???
Once again here's how to restore an iPhoto Library from Time Machine:

My Time machine won't back up. Recently updated to OS x 10.7.5. Error message is as follows: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Time Machine Backup/Scott’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use." What is wrong and how do I fix it? Thanks.
Have you tried restarting the computer? Also, see Time Machine Error from this pages sidebar under More Like This.

Opening iPhoto from a time machine backup
Is it possible to open the iPhoto application from a time machine backup? Here is my problem and what I am trying to do:
I created a sample book (prior to an actual book) to practice with some settings--photos, layouts, fonts, backgrounds, etc. Then I deleted it by accident. I am grateful that it was just a practice book. But I wanted to use it as a reference for my real book. I would like to open iPhoto from my time machine backup of earlier today, however when I click the iPhoto app from the backup all I get is the information about iPhoto and can not open it. I definitely do not want to restore iPhoto, but is there a way I can open iPhoto to access this sample book information from my backup? Thanks for any info.
LHMThanks LN,
OK, so if I want to restore a previous iPhoto backup to an external drive (or even to the desktop) how do I do that? I don't see how to choose a different location and I am afraid I am going to mess up my original. I tried restoring and "keeping both", and my original iPhoto was labeled as the original and right next to it appeared an iPhoto folder that did not have the iPhoto library. I moved it to my desktop. All it has in it is a contents folder with a bunch of things I don't understand. When I did this I did not see a way to select a different location. It automatically placed this new iPhoto (folder previously described) in my applications folder. If you can walk me through how to accomplish this I would appreciate it. If not, it is not worth taking the chance that I will mess up my beautifully functioning iPhoto library. Thanks!

How do i retrieve photos from iphoto on a time machine backup?
how do i retrieve photos from iphoto on a time machine backup?
To restore the entire library do the following:
For a single photo you need to know the file name? If so you can extract photos one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto. You would do it as follows:
1 - download and launch Find Any File.
2 - select the Time Machine external hard drive.
3 - enter the file name and search. It will take longer than a normal search due to the nature of the Time Machine structure, maybe up to 1 miinute.
4 - select the file that is in the Masters or Originals folder in the search results window and drag to the Desktop where it can be imported into iPhoto: -
I just bought a new Macbook pro and i tried to rebuild my iphoto library from a time machine backup on an external hard drive. Even after pressing command+option when starting iphoto and selecting rebuild library from automatic backup, it still doesn't work with the grey screen with the white circle and a little window that says 'rebuilding library: 0 versions restored'. I also tried to make a copy of my iphoto library but that did not work either. how can i restore my iphoto library or at least gain access to my photos?
Your question is not clear
Rerairing or rebuilding the iPhoto library never involves using Time Machine in any way
TM is a totally seperate program and you can "restore" a file (including the iPhoto library) from the past using TM - you launch TM and go back to the time you want and select the file (or folder or package) you want and click restore - it probably is best to keep the current one until you are sure everything is good

Iphoto library and time machine backup on a same drive ?
Hi
I want to free up some space on my MBP so I am planning to move my iphoto library from MBP to an external hard drive. Can I also use the same external drive to keep Time Machine backups ? In short if I buy a large size external drive can I use it as a TM backup drive and also as iphoto library home location ? Or do I have to keep two separate external drives...one for TM and the other for iphoto library.
Thanks
MandarYes, you can, but I wouldn't recommend it. Should your backup drive fail then you not only lose your Time Machine backups but you will also lose your iPhoto Library. But if you put each on two different drives then you lose none. If the iPhoto drive fails your library is still backed up on the Time Machine backup drive. If you lose the Time Machine drive then you lose a backup that can be easily recreated, but you still have the iPhoto drive. Two drives is a much better strategy. Always keep backups separate from all other external drive uses.

Deleting duplicates in iPhoto - Effects on Time Machine Backup
I am new to Time Machine Backup. I have a query, (perhaps a silly one?)
Out of 4500 photos in my iPhoto, I have trashed 300 duplicates.
On my next backup in Time Machine on an Ext HD, will the deleted photos be also gone?
What about the duplicates that I originally stored in my Hard Drive under My Pictures? Are they also stand deleted?Hi blissalvacion,
Time Machine takes exact copies of your HD at the time the backup occurs. Here's an example:
05/05/10 @ 10:00am - 3500 photos
05/05/10 @ 11:00am - 3300 photos
So at some point in that hour block, you deleted 200 photos. All of sudden at 11:15am National Geographic calls and wants to pay you $1,000,000 for those 200 photos. If you click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar at the top and select "Enter Time Machine" you can then view your HD as it looked at 10:00am and restore those deleted 200 photos.
The catch, unfortunately, is that with iPhoto the iPhoto Library is a container file (it's really a folder just doesn't look like one). So if the photos were deleted from within iPhoto you'd need to restore the entire iPhoto Library to how it looked at 10:00am. Based on the size of your iPhoto Library, the restore might take a little while. -
HT4927 Restoring iPhoto library from Time Machine backup
Will restoring an iPhoto library from Time Machine overwrite the current library? After I did a backup, I deleted some photos but since then I have added new photos.
It is an option. You can overwrite or keep both when you restore

Unable to exclude VMware disk image from Time Machine backup
In Time Machine Preferences, I elected to exclude home\Documents\Virtual Machines folder in my home directory. Whether I use the "+" button to add the exclusion or dragged it in from Finder, the exclusion list only shows [Virtual Machine]. Coming from a Windows world, I am concerned that I don't see the fully qualified path for the "Virtual Machine" folder name. Even the folder property doesn't show the full path information. Since I do not exclude Documents folder, it is included in all Time Machines backup. Unfortunately, so is my home\Documents\Virtual Machines folder.
Question #1: What am I missing?
This question is related to this next issue.
Question #2: If I have a folder called "Users Guide" in addition to the built-in "Documents folder in my home directory, and they each contain the sub-directory "Preliminary", how do I tell Time Machine I want to exclude the folder \User Guide\Preliminary from TM backup? Thanks for the tip. Hovering does show the path. Now the mystery is a little worst than before, and I'm back to trying figure out how to exclude the home\Documents\Virtual Machines folder (where he VM disk images are stored) from Time Machine backups while it's allowed to backup home\Documents (as intended).
When I get back home tonight, I'm going to try excluding some other sub-folders (which I created) of [Documents] from Time Machine while I allow [Documents] to be backed up. I'll post the results, and hopefully can ask a smarter questions. -
Can't view my iPhoto libary in Time Machine backup
So here is the issue; I often view my pictures of iPhoto by going directly into the iPhoto Library: Finder --> Pictures --> iPod Photo Cache --> iPhoto Library --> then right click on this "iPhoto Library" --> Show Package Content... and I can view all my photoes/events the way I uploaded them from my camera.
So far everything is good. However, when I'm going into my External Hard Drive which I'm using as my Time Machine (Seagate Backup Plus FOR MAC) and trying to locate the same folder there I can NOT find it. The only folders I can locate under my latest backup (and every backup since I started using this external device) are:
- AlbumData2.xml
- iPhoto.ipspot
- Metadata Backup --> BackupStatus.impeta
- Metadata Backup (original) --> BackupStatus.impeta
All of the files are extremly small (like few KB) compare to my 280GB iPhoto Library.
Can anyone help me find my complete "iPhoto Library" on my external backup drive.
Thanks!You are welcome.
My concern now, is that if I just simply move the iPhoto Library by dragging it to the main Picture folder I will loose the link between the source (which are the photoes in the iPhoto Library) and the pictures I'm looking at when opening the iPhoto application.
Moving the library between folders will not break the connection between the thumbnails and the original image files, as long as you drag the library as an entity - the whole package and not folders inside. So dragging the iPhoto library one level up, outside the "iPod Photo Cache" folder, the links shoud stay intact.
Have you checked your Time Machine preferences, if you excluded your iPhoto Library from backup?
if you press the "Options" button in the "System Preferences > Time Machine" panel, it will show a list of items, that are excluded from backup. -
Restoring iPhoto '11 from Time Machine Backup
hi, i recently had a problem with my harddisk and had it changed. i've decided to restore only certain apps as opposed to restoring the whole harddisk. so far, everything has gone well except with iPhoto '11. the machine came back with iLife '09 instead of iLife '11. i managed to restore iMovie and GarageBand '11 with Time Machine but have been unsuccessful with iPhoto
I have restored the iPhoto app, the iPhoto library, /Library/Application Support/iPhoto/ as well as the following folders under /Library/Frameworks/:
iLifeFaceRecognition.framework
iLifeKit.framework
iLifePageLayout.framework
iLifeSlideshow.framework
iLifeSQLAccess.framework
NyxAudioAnalysis.framework
however, the app keeps crashing.

Any reason you don't just re-install it from Disk? Seems like that would be a whole lot easier and faster.

Use disk image as time machine backup volume
I have a large RAID array attached directly to my Mac via firewire (so it is not a NAS). Can I create a disk image file within that larger array, then mount that image as a disk, then use that as my Time Machine target? I see lots of discussion of doing this for NAS, but I cannot get TM to recognize a mounted disk image file as a TM backup volume. FYI, the reason for this is that I want to create a sparse image that limits the amount of space that TM will take, without eating up my entire RAID array, which is huge. Also, by tricking it into thinking it is another volume, TM will still let me back up other stuff on the RAID array to TM.
Thank you,
It's interesting to me that it will work if mounted as an SMB volume (at least according to many other posts). While I agree with you that it won't work, as I have verified that, I wonder if it could work if enabled (similar to the ability to enable unsupported network volumes).
A follow-on question: I would really like to have TM back up FROM a mounted network share to my TM database. I have a network SMB share with a lot of my data on it. I currently have to rsync it to an external drive in order to get TM to back it up. TM is set to ignore network volumes volumes. Interestingly, the SMB shares appear to get mounted on /Volumes instead of /Network, but that is aside, as both directories are set to be ignored by default. Anyhow, is there a way to turn that feature off and allow certain network shares to be backed up (and similarly blocked from back-up in the same manner that I do everything else)? Again, lots of posts out there about backing up TO a network share, but none tell me how to back up from a mounted network share to TM. -
Manual Extraction of iPhoto Library from Time Machine Backup.
I've got most of my most valuable data already backed up. The final remaining thing to get is my iPhoto Library. Unfortunately I've already tried twice to restore the iMac from the TimeMachine without success. The backup itself is corrupt and copies the corruption to the iMac making it useless. While I can access the Data disk on the Time Machine and can see the backup.sparsebundle, when I Show Package Contents the bands folder never opens…
Using the Migration Assistant is feeling a bit risky as I don't actually know what the miscellaneous items are when restoring. I'd hate for the corruption to copy back when all I need is the iPhoto Library and have to take the iMac back to the Apple store to have the OS installed for a 3rd time. Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.Perhaps you need to re-read the article I linked to. It uses the Time Machine interface not Migration Assistant. BTW your iPhoto Library is part of the 8.8 gb User.
If you only have 2.1 gigs of space left on that disk then you have a major problem.
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do. -
HT201250 How do I restore iPhoto images from Time Machine?
I lost some images from iPhoto '08 (v 7.15) while exporting images. I let the battery run down on my laptop. I do have iPhoto with the same images backed up with time machine; I located them; how do I restore the images?

I just bought a Time Capsule and started using Time Machine. The window that appears when selecting "Enter Time Machine" shows the desktop, but not the Hard Drive. I want to see the contents of the HD, not the desktop.
