IPhoto Images Turn Black

In iPhoto 9, vers. 8.1.2, new uploads turn black after editing in iPhoto and content is "0", meaning I can't export anything. I can revert to original, but in edited form the content is gone! This seems to be with my new Nikon camera images only. I don't really have to use their  software to upload images, do I? I want to go from camera to iPhoto direct. I should be able to edit photos in iPhoto and export them.

I still have this problem. It has occurred on pictures imported from Sony, Nikon and Fuji cameras
Do the resulting files also end up at 0 kb? If not, then it's not the same issue.
There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

When I create a text layer, the whole image turns black.  If I enter the text blindly, I will see the expected results when I finish and click on another tool.  If I try to edit the text layer, everything turns black again.  I am not using the type mask tool.  I can select and move the layer and I can blend the layer; I just can't see what I am typing.

  • Why are my duotone images turning black and white when put in indesign?

why are my duotone images turning black and white when put in indesign?
I have been playing duo and montotone images into indesing with no trouble. Then all of a sudden as I placew them they go black and whitre. I have tried everything from re saving, re making in photoshop and differant colours et5c. But nothing seems to wrok. The images already in my document arew fine it is just new ones. If someone could help that would be great

Can you start a new document and then load one of the duotones known to be good in the working file and have it correct? If so, try one of the duotones known to be bad in the working document in the new file. Does it work?
If no to either suggestion, can you share one of the images known to be good and one known to be bad? ZIP 'em up and upload to dropbox and plop a link here. Or, to keep the file sizes down, you can quickly make a new set and provide those.
As well, the ID version and OS info would probably be helpful.
    Take care, Mike

when working in photoshop the canvas/image turns black - not allowing me to view the materials.  what is causing this?  how can it be fixed?  very frustrating when working on a file and all of a sudden it's no longer visible.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup

  • Iphoto screen turns black--- sometimes

    Iphoto problem
    I'm using Iphoto '11
    version 9.2 (626)
    MAC OS X Version 10.6.8
Some of the images don't show up at all but come up with a gray dashed border around white background.  When I double click this, instead of an image appearing, the screen in iphoto goes solid black. In looking at the slides on the bottom nest to the "info", 'edit", "create" links, I can see something, at least a small image with some color but can't make out what it is; but there is something there. Then I scroll down in Iphoto and arbitrarily chose another (summer 2006 Feb 14 2006-Jul 20, 2006).  In this photo, I double click and the iphoto screen goes black. Another from the same camera, taken same day will appear, I click on "edit" and the image remains and is editable. The screen is black but I can see the image in that slide bar at the bottom of the screen. I scroll along the images at the bottom and most react as expected but every now and then I click on an image and get the screen black.
Now within these same photos the mystery continues. In most of the "normal" images I can select and drag onto my desktop or put in a folder on my desktop (or anywhere else I designate). But, with these particular images that turn the Iphoto screen black I cannot move them. I tried to email them, they did not appear when the email was received and opened. No photo.
Any help will be most appreciated

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    TD

  • My image turns black when I try to edit it in Photoshop CC on Windows 7

I attached a screen recording of what is happening when I try to edit my image in photoshop. I'm trying to make a funny picture for my friend by photoshopping their face onto the surfer but when I try to select the original face to remove it my screen turns black.
If anyone can help me figure out why this is happening I'd really appreciate it!

Go update your video card driver from the GPU Maker's website (Not Microsoft or a system builder).

  • Part or all of images turn black

Ever since upgrading to Version 35 Firefox (windows), many images on pages will turn black after a while. Clearing cache and refreshing page fixes the problem only to return after minutes. Here is an ongoing discussion that many others are dealing with.
    https://github.com/srobbin/jquery-backstretch/issues/399
Some have come up with temporary fixes but it is not fixed. It is still ongoing for me in V36.04. It was not an issue in version 34.

hello, could you go to the firefox ''menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information'', copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

  • B&W images turn black & red after edit in iPhoto '11 v. 9.3

After editing some B&W jpegs, which appear to edit properly, they appear red when next viewed. The thumbnails appear normal. Any edit appears to cause this: simple image rotation, quick Enhance, adjusting any slider. These images edited properly under the previous version.
This only happens with some downloaded jpegs, not with images from any of our cameras.
Emailed one of these jpegs to another mac, also updated to same new version, same result. Both macs (2011 Air and 2008 MBPro) running Lion.
    Suggestions?
    Frank

    LarryHN,
Thanks. I can see that iPhoto does indeed only edit in RGB as you say, but as a developer and user interface designer for 40 years including a dozen years at Apple, it *is* a bug. The original image does have a valid color profile of grayscale when imported, so iPhoto should either handle the RGB conversion correctly or refuse to import the original image (or at least warn).
The current operation is what we used to refer to as "user hostile." The fact that this is causing my wife and I hours of distraction due to an invisible attribute is cause enough for identifying this as a bug. It is not possible to look at a grayscale image and know whether its profile is grayscale or RGB.
My wife also reports that this worked properly in the previous "dot" release, suggesing that this is a reversion, and thus a bug. I'll be contacting Apple support.
Again, thanks for you help. Much appreciated.
    Frank

  • Livetype Image turns Black in FCP

    Ok,
I've got a canvas (Ovals) from Livetype. I changed it using the color sampler (sampling a color from a clip in my FCP timeline). The Livetype canvas plays just the way I want it. I import it into FCP, and it just displays black. If I import into FCP with the standard blue Ovals canvas (not changing color using the color-sampler), then it will display the canvas in FCP.
The biggest confuser for me here is that this worked fine, and I made a DVD and Quicktime of this project for my client ages ago. I am now trying to work with the files exported to a hard drive by media manager. For some reason, the Livetype files have quit displaying in FCP (as described in the first paragraph). Oh, it was actually transparent until I turned off the alpha channel on the .ipr clip in the browser.
Any thoughts or advice would be great,
    Lawrence

I am having the exact same problem. Although, in my case, it worked fine the other day, the Ovals lower third bg came in to FCP fine and played etc. Today, I made a change to the title, and then back in FCP once it reset itself, the bg is gone. The titles are still showing, but no bg.
I think it might be the latest version of LiveType too. I had created a project awhile ago using the Ovals lower third, I changed the colors and it worked with no problems. Then recently, I went back into that sequence to change something, and it wouldn't show up anymore. So strange. Luckily, in that case I could copy paste the already rendered title from an older version of my sequence and that worked fine.
If you've found anything new out, i'd love to know the work around. It is quite frustrating.
I'll try trashing my preferences too, just in case that does the trick.
    Thanks,
    Jenn

  • IPhoto photos into iMovie - once rendered, photo turns black

I posted under another thread, but decided this might be better posted to the larger group.
I was working off of an external harddrive when the problem first manifested itself. Dragging a photo from the media pane into the time clip, I saw that the photo turned black and would not display after being rendered.
I moved the drive to another Mac, also an iMac G4 but with a faster processor, and a slightly different experience occurred. Upon starting up the project, when I clicked yes to view the trash, the photos I had been trying to use were no in the trast.
I put a few back and tried to apply the effects, but then the photo turned black. then I grabbed a photo from iPhoto again. The photo would show up but the Ken Burns effect would not stick. If it did stick, the photo turned black and wouldn't display. I saved and quit.
Took my external harddrive to my Powerbook. Had better luck grabbing photos from iPhoto, but no Ken Burns effects worked.
Now I'm back on my original iMac. This time I copied the project to the iMac's harddrive. Now there is another experience - a little closer to what I want but still not what I'm used to:
I added the photo to the timeline, it rendered itself to black again. Much frustrated sighing.
However, I had added some music to the timeline in the interim periods and just decided to view what I had. Lo and behold the black photo displayed with the Ken Burns effect. I added a couple more photos and they began to behave as they always have. You can see the photo in the time line. The black one is still black.
All this is quite unsettling. I plan on doing a project with 60 students in October and need to know if anyone thinks this is a bug or what? Thanks for any insight.

I am having the same problem images turning black when brought into the timeline Started when bringing in Photos from APERTURE 1.5. Thought this program was the problem so, I imported the same images into iPhoto. The problem does seem to "fix" when transitions are added , but this makes it difficult to edit and rearrange images. The hard drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled). Shooting a Nikon D-70; D-200. Images a 2 - 5MG. Most confusing it is not consistent happens to some images and not others. Same problem happened when images were imported to iMovie.
ANY SUGGESTIONS MOST APPRECIATED, TRYING TO COMPLETE A BIG PROJECT THIS WEEK.
    THANK YOU

  • Photos Turning Black in 3.01

Well this is new (for me). I just imported a bunch of RAW files into Aperture 3.01 from my Rebel xsi, which I've done without issue a few times before. During import everything looks fine – the photos are visibly loading into a new project – but then one-by-one all of the images turn black, as in completely black frames where the photos should be, but with the image name still below. So the project is now full of black boxes. I tried restarting, it didn't help. The RAW images are fine when viewed in the Finder. Help?

My last couple of ideas, and then I'm stuck for other suggestions .
Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD and running repairs to the HD?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
And, although it's often dismissed by some on here others occasionally run OnyX, which has a good repution for performing disk maintenance safely (always have a reliable backup though). I've run it from time to time and have never had any concerns. It runs a variety of system checks that OSX can perform itself, but wraps all those processes in a clear GUI and executes them at your command:

  • I have a mac running iPhoto, please advise when I copy the photo to add to a document while creating a pictorial when it is pasted it turns black, I have tried many different methods to over come the issue but unsuccessful

My 6 month old Mac is using iPhoto. Please advise when I copy the photo from iPhoto to add to a word document while creating a pictorial artical as soon as it  is pasted the picture it turns black, I have tried many different methods to over come the issue but unsuccessful. In the past the iPhoo was default for direct download from a card, This I have now changed but in the meantime there are photographs that I need to use. I understand window completly but still on the nursery steps with Mac.
    Please advise Heather

As I said before I am reluctanct to delete and reinstall the iPhoto as I only have the one copy of the file i am using stored in iphoto file and I caint loose them.
All storage hardware and all computers will fail.  Volumes will get corrupted.  Mistakes will happen.
Please learn from our past mistakes and from our past data losses: please have and keep regular backups.
Either via Time Machine (which is marvelously transparent, and very easy), or backups created via some other mechanisms and tools.  Old Toad recommends an external disk, and that's very effective.  If this is a portable Mac, then Time Capsule devices are also very handy, as you don't have to remember to connect the backup device; so long as the Mac is within wireless range of the Time Capsule, backups will happen.
Time Machine backups can also be used to replace your files or even to upgrade to a new Mac, should your computer be lost or stolen, or should your computer or your storage fail.
If you have not already seen these, Mac Basics and Find Out How could be interesting.
As for your photos...   I wouldn't expect this to be iPhoto and wouldn't go for an iPhoto reinstall as the first step, I'd tend to wonder if this is a bug or feature in Microsoft Word, or possibly a format incompatibility with what Office supports.  iPhoto organizes and edits the photos that are stored in your ~/Pictures media directory.  Try using iWork (if you have that) or some other tool (Apple Mail) that accepts and processes photos, and see if you can localize the problem.  Depending on the image formats used, also see if exporting the picture from iWork into a jpeg-format picture — something other than the image format you're currently using with the Microsoft Office imports — works.  (FWIW, I use iWork for reading and writing Microsoft Office documents as well as Pages and Keynote files, and have been using iPhoto with those and other tools for many years, and haven't encountered these blacked-out images.)
