IPhoto import and metadata

Sorry if this has been asked and answer already, but if I import my iPhoto collection into Aperture, will Aperture recognize and import the meta data I've set in iPhoto?

OK, I;m going to answer my own questions since I just acquired Aperture.
When importing from iPhoto all the "right" things are done. iPhoto meta data is imported into Aperture. Also, the original and edit copy of the photo is imported.
I'm impressed with Aperture. I have a lot to learn and this program still has a few issues that hopefully will be addressed soon (like being able to send a RAW photo to PhotoShop and support for my particular camera, the Minolta Maxxum 5D).

  • How can i keep my iphoto imports and onedrive photos in the same place and synced to onedrive?

I currently subscribe to Office365 and use OneDrive to sync all my docs and files from my old Windows PC to my Mac (OSX Mavericks).
I have a tons of photos already on OneDrive and would like to so my PhotoSteam and also when I import photos or use iPhoto that it uses the OneDrive Photo folder/directory.
    Is this possible?
As a new OSX users I am not sure how to do this, in Windows I would have just changed the directory of the Picture library but cannot see a way to do this on OSX.
Any help and pointers (in as simple steps as possible!) would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Phil

Yes it is possible but no you really, really don't want to do this if you're using iPhoto.
You can't put an iPhoto Library on OneDrive. It's not a Directory, but a rather complex ecosystem of sql database, files, caches and metadata. Basically, you're trying to run a Mac database from a Windows disk and that's always going to cause problems. (as doing the reverse would too.)
You can (in theory) run iPhoto with storing the files on OneDrive but don't. iPhoto has no tools to manage this set up properly, and you're only storing up issues for further down the road.
For more on iPhoto and file management see this User Tip:

  • IPhoto: Imported and Lost Pictures

I have just imported my pics during a normal sync, I could see them imported on Iphoto but when I wanted to see them on the events tabs they couldn't be accessed. I closed Iphoto hoping to reset the "glitch" and when back in iPhoto the pice were gone, lucliky this time I didn't let the app to erase the pics (last time I did and lost a bunch!).
This is not the first time I import pic and I've done it multiple times, but lately I've been having this problem.
    Any Ideas?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • JPG import and metadata

    Hi,
Before Lightroom, I was shooting everything in jpg format. So, I currently have a lot of photos that I want to import in Lightroom to build my library. While importing, I encountered a small problem: applying metadata is impossible on JPG files.
I understand why (because metadata applies to the RAW file when building the final jpeg file, isn't it?). The problem is that Lightroom shows me a little '!' in the upper right corner of each photo preview. This little icon is slowing down Lightroom I suspect, because when I scroll, Lightroom must decide if it has to show me or not the icon.
Is there a way to hide that icon, or a way to import JPG without getting in that situation?
    Thanks

Consider that some folks use only JPEGs and you'll see why you can do the same with JPEGs as with RAW or TIFF files. (Only RAW files use an external "sidecar" to store metadata now). Also consider that metadata can include keywords, frequently entered after the Import, as well as edits.

That's it.  I see others seem to be having a similar problem.

    Same question - same answer
have charged batteries, try rebuilding and never have iPhoto erase your photos - if necessary use media recover to try to recover the photos on the memory card

  • My iPhoto 9.1.5 has gone batty.  Won't import and KEEP imports.

I have TWO iMac 20's dual core.  They are identical and have mostly the same software.  Both have the latest iPhoto running on v 9.1.5. All of a sudden, my wife's iMac will not let iPhoto import and/or save photos in albums.
She imports a group of photos, edits them, and places them in a new album, just as she have been doing for years. Then she quits iPhoto. When she returns, the last photos and it's album are GONE.  She imports the same photos from her desktop, edits them again, and places them in a NEW album.  When she returns to iPhoto, the latest photos AND the allbum are gone again. The program doesn't retin any new input.
They are not in the photo section, or events section or albums. Where do they go?
She has started the mac up from the Start up Disk and run Disk Utilities. Nothing appeared wrong.
She has re-installed iLife with no changes occuring. Same problems.
There are also blank frames interspered throughout the albums where she has deleted photos.
What else can we do to get this problem solved? My computer works fine.  Hers works fine except for these iPhoto problems.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • IPhoto import - a way to import specific albums?

I was watching the instructional video DVD that came with aperture and have found it a very, very helpful tutorial in getting started. I am having a problem doing one of the things shown on it though. At the beginning of the second track, the video covers iPhoto import, and shows how you can import a specific album by Import > Files and choosing a specific album name within the iPhoto library. My iPhoto library, however, does not have any album names in it - only numbered folders. I'd like to be able to import my business photos only and not my personal photos into Aperture, or ideally both but with a separate aperture project for each photo session. But since the iPhoto hierarchy is just numbered folders, it is too confusing to find what i am trying to import. Do I have to export all my iPhoto albums separately into folders that I name individually, and then import those folders into Aperture?

    You need to
    1. Download the images to a folder on the desktop.
It may be possible to download an entire album at a time, but that's a question for a Picasa forum
    2. Then import the folder to iPhoto.

  • How to import tags and metadata from iphoto 11 to Organizer

I have been using iPhoto 11 and I have around 26000 photos in my library. I am considering to buy the Photoshop Elements 10 and I downloaded the trial. I would like to import my photos from the iPhoto Libray to the organizer with all the metadata that they have, faces, places .... I have not been able to import that, only the photos and the tags but not the faces or places. Does anyone know how to get my photos and the organizer to recognize the place and faces that I already have marked in the iPhoto?
Thanks in advance for any response.

    Hi Victoria,
Though I'm not very sure but perhaps the way face information is created and stored by iPhoto is different from that in Organizer. SO that might be the reason why people tags in iPhoto and Organizer behave differently. Organizer associates a face rectangle (portion of the image with a face) with people tags. That might not be the case with iPhoto perhaps.
Since tags are written in image metadata, they can directly be retrieved. Infact Places information if embedded as GPS data (demographic latitude/longitude format) should be read by Organizer.
Someone else might give a better advice on this one. I just told what I think the reason could be

  • IPhoto and metadata

I started using iPhoto 09 yesterday, and have some questions for you. When I import my pictures I use Adobe Lightroom to convert to DNG, add captions, keywords and ratings. I (want to) use iPhoto for viewing, organizing and ordering books and stuff. Unfortunately there are a few shortcomings to this approach.
    * iLife doesn't import any metadata for my raw images. Under the JPEGs I see captions and keywords, but under the DNGs it just says "raw". It also has problems importing from some of my JPEGs
    * The captions from LR are written to the IPTC urgency field. This is not standardized (I think), but applications like Picasa and Digikam understand it on import. iPhoto does not.
    * Faces and places are not written into the metadata of the images, is it? Does iPhoto write back any of the other metadata (captions, keywords)?
Anyone have any comments/solutions to any of the things I have mentioned?
I have considered fixing this myself, by writing a script that pulls the metadata I want from my JPGs/DNGs and puts it ... somewhere in the iPhoto database. Do you think this is possible?

    Thanks for the fast reply.
To continue on your car-comparison. If I learn a lot about driving using that one car, I don't want to forget what I learned if I get a new car in the future At the moment I really like iPhoto, but if I at some point want to use another application, I want all the metainformation I've added to follow me to the new application, and that means it has to be either embedded in the images or really easy to get out from the database. I feel much more in control of my metadata when using Lightroom.
Especially hierarchical keywords are important to me. The are easy to use and manage, and reorganizing them works like a dream. After writing captions, keywords and rating to the images, I can write back the changes to the images and it wouldn't matter if I lost the database, since the complete info is in the images. Haven't heard about Lightroom not using metadata in standard ways, but that sounds scary. Do you know more about this? In my experience, most applications understand the metadata written by Lightroom.
Like I said I want to use iPhoto after the organizing because it's great as a viewer and I may want to order stuff, but also because iPhoto talks well to other applications I want to use, like iDVD. I also like Events, Places and Faces so much that I want to play with those even if the information is lost if I move to another application.
I'm guess I'm gonna have to think a bit about what approach to choose. Right now I keep the DNGs in my library, but maybe I should export to JPG and just keep the DNGs for backup on some offline media. This would take up less space and make my collection understandable by most applications. I could also let iPhoto copy the photos and live with two copies of my library. If/when moving to another application, the LR-copy would then be the portable one.

  • IPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and losing the photos I just imported and edited.

iPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and losing the photos I just imported and edited.  Any suggestions to fix it?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I imported 100 photos, when I was reading photos iphoto crushed, and when I restarted iphoto all photos imported had disappeared! Is there a way to find them. They were imported, they can not have disappeared from the hard disk?

I imported 100 photos from my camera (Canon) into iphoto. The importation went well, and when I was watching the photos, suddenly iphoto crashed. I restarted iphoto and realized that the photos had disapered. The events are availbble into iphoto but they are empty, the photos have dispeared. I can not believe they disapeared as they have been imported and read once, they must be hidden somewhere on the disk? Is there a way to find where they are?

Assuning you're running iPhoto 9 or later try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
    2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • I need to create a new iPhoto library and import 'ORIGINALS' from a time machine backup on an external hard drive.

I made the mistake of installing OS 10.9 on my older MacBook Air and the machine has become horribly slow and unpredictable. I visited the Apple store and questioned a 'Genius' about getting rid of 10.9 and reinstalling the previous OS 10.6 for which I have the disks. He advised that I should reformat the Air, reinstall 10.6 and then restore from the Time Machine backup that I have.
He explained that of course, after I reinsatll 10.6,  I couldn't import the iPhoto Library from the backup drive complete because it had been recreated using the OS 10.9 and wouldn't work with 10.6.  I would have to create a new 10.6 iPhoto Library and move the actual ORIGINALS, from the backup into it.   He actually had the path to the iPhoto library shown on my Air to the point of >Pictures >iPhoto Library > ORIGINALS.
I didn't question how he got the path to the point of > ORIGINALS and figured that it wouldn't take too much to do what he suggested. Now I can't find how to get to point of seeing the ORIGINALS in the path. When I go through the path >Pictures >iPhoto Library, the next column shows me the iPhoto Library icon and the info re size, creation date etc.
Can anyone advise how to get to the 'ORIGINALS' in order to import them and does anyone have any further suggestions that might help in completing this procedure ?
Thanks, in advance, for any assistance available.
p.s. is there any way of looking at a Time Machine backup and finding what O.S. was present when the backup was produced ?

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
