IPhoto Import - Need some library management Ideas...sound off please

I just got Aperture and love the functionality. I have been using Iphoto pretty faithfully for about a year after migrating from a PC. I have about 13,000 (40GB) jpeg photos in Iphoto. I will exclusively use Aperture from now on as far as I can tell. Do I import the Iphoto library or use them where they are? IS there an advantage to using the managed files vs referenced files? IF all new photos going forward are imported directly into Aperture, I will infact have two libraries, right? I figure I am about 2-3 months away from having to migrate my libraries to an external drive from my MBP. If I do that, can I still view and show photos if I migrate my master files to the external. I like to travel and work my my MBP and having my entire library, at least a low res copy of it would be useful.
I am looking to hear from people who have 30 - 60GB libraries on their laptops and have recently migrated from Iphoto and what they found workable and what was not.

Couple of things.
Your by line shows you are still running 10.4.6 is this true? You really should update to 10.4.8, all the most recent firmware and iLife updater to be integrated with Aperture 1.5 (and now 1.5.1), and the most recent raw camera updater. The most recent raw updater actually fixes a output bug on Aperture 1.5 as well as adding recent cameras.
I have close to 20k photos (mix of raw, tiff and jpeg files) all referenced on an external drive using MBP and have no speed reliability issues. Like you, I have 2gb RAM. The reason it is running slow is probably due to creating preview files. Many people have reported slow start (some turn off previews but if you are referencing master files, this will not work) but once it creates all the previews, you should be fine.
Just make sure that you manage the size of preview files. The default file size may be as large as your original jpeg, depending on what you shoot. I have my preview limited to 1440x1440 (I have 15" MBP -> 1440x900 screen, 17" is 1680x1050) with compression for browsing. I use a large external monitor when working with an external HDD so full res, original file is used for editing the images.

if you are listening through headphones using the built in audio from the mac, you may be hearing fan noise or a hard drive spin noise.

How does iPhoto relate to iP Library Manager?

Once upon a time, I had my libraries & albums set up just fine. (In iP4). Then, I upgraded from like Panther to Leopard, etc. I don't know what iP version I upgraded to doing that. Anyway, everything got fouled up & the only way I could access my libraries was using iP Library Manager (thank god!). All of my photos are still in the original iP main library. I'm confused about duplicaion of images between iP11 and iP Library Manager. Where, exactly, are the original files? What images are aliases, and which are not?
This is what my home folder looks like:
(Folder) iPhoto My Vision (rebuilt)
(Folder) iPhoto Library
(Folder) iPhoto My Family (rebuilt)
When I want to add images, do I still do it in iPhoto11, where the other two Libraries do not appear? Exactly what is the relationship between iP & iP Library Manager?

You have three Libraries. iPhoto can open any of them by going
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Library Manager (apart from its many other excellent qualities) does the same job.
Library Manager holds no photos, no aliases or anything like that. It's just a tool to augment iPhoto.
So yes, the only way to add photos is to use iPhoto.
You can choose which Library to add the images to - iPhoto will only add images to the open one.

I need some good electric guitar sounds for Garageband

Garageband just comes with a few electric sounds. I need some software that includes a lot of guitar sounds, and I'd like to know if there are any of the Jam Packs that have this. I know I can buy software like Realstrat that will do this, but getting them to interface with Garageband can be tough. Anybody know if a Jam Pack has what I'm looking for?

Have you tried crafting the guitar sounds Garageband?
I ask because I frequently read posts where people are asking where they can find sounds and yet it has been my experience that finding the right loop is simply a beginning point.
Ultimately if you want to enjoy the full capability of Garageband the sounds will have to be customized and shaped to fit what it is you are trying to communicate in a particular music project.
In other words use Garageband to make the sounds do whatever it is you want them too.

Need some help managing a (large) iTunes music library

Hopefully someone can help me with my problem(s).
Over time I've accumulated a lot (40,000+) of music in my iTunes and recently I've noticed a lot of dead tracks (shown as "!" next to track)appearing in my library and I can't find the music file in my iTunes music folder.
The good thing is I have a backup of my (most 35,000+) music on an external hard drive. And from the looks of it most of the missing tracks are in my backup drive.
My questions are:
1. Where do these tracks go? and why are they getting 'lost'?
2. What would be the best way to get back these missing tracks (1,000+) back into my library? I can do the whole import (from external drive) process again, but this would create duplicates and I will have a library of 75,000+ songs, half of which will be duplicates.
Any help will be much appreciated.

The ! shows up when files get moved, renamed, or deleted.
Many times it is an accidental "renaming" when windows changes an external drive letter without telling you.
For example, if a path to a song is F:\itunes\artist\album song one day, and then you plug in a digital camera card. Windows reassigns F: to the camera card and now the path to the song is G:\itunes\artist\album.
Myself, I would do a Get Info and find them one by one, maybe 30 tracks per day.
If you want to re-add them all, you can sort by Date Added and get rid of the duplicates as explained here

There are also little free programs on the web that say they will fix issues like these, but I don't know any to trust.

[SOLVED] Need some help getting the sound to work again

Recently I changed the motherboard and CPU to an AM3 platform, everything works with my previous setup except sound.
Reinstalling alsa-utils and rebooting had absolutely no effect. Google didn't help either.

Great. It took the bulk of my day trying to figure out how to get this thing to work.
VolWheel is now set to adjust "Master Front" (it was previously set to "Master" with the old motherboard) and the Sonata volume bar apparently works too, just like I wanted (adjusting the PCM volume by default). Good. Great ! Now I just need to set the "snd-hda-intel" module to load at boot so I don't have to type "sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel" all the time and this thread can be considered SOLVED.
sudo nano /etc/rc.conf
...and add the following:
MODULES="... snd-hda-intel ..."
(also removed snd-ac97-codec from the list because that's what the old mobo used)

PS: Just out of curiosity, why is it called "snd-hda-intel" ? Why intel ? The CPU is AMD, the chipset is Nvidia nForce, sound is VIA...

FlashPlayer 10. I need some help with no sound

Hello. I have Adobe Flashplayer 10 and I am not able to hear sound when I visit websites lke Youtube. I see the video just fine but there is no sound at all. Although sound does work in other programs such as Windows Media Player. Any advice? Thanks

I did have sound from all speakers not long ago but now sound is limited to the main/front outs. Using realtek alc888. As usual enabling environment effects/echo makes sound come from all other speakers but I have never liked any of the effects/echo. Usually have at least three sets of speakers hooked up at all times and they all work with other applications as they used to all work with flash???
This happens in both firefox and IE7.
My main front outs are hooked up to the "big stereo" which are not on all the time and would really like to get sound from the side and rear speakers again.
This may be a windows update problem too but I am not sure???

Okay, first point I notice is that the first line should be "import javax.swing.*" not "javax.swing.*"
The reason for the error is that you are using your own 'Queue' class (I presume), and yet there is a Queue class also in the awt package (which is not intended for developer use). This means the compiler does not know which Queue class to pick. Removing the 'import java.awt.*' should get rid of this error. However, if you are using any of the classes in the awt package (such as Button, BorderLayout, etc), you will need to import them individually (e.g. import java.awt.Button;).

Dear all, I need help with the colour profile of my photoshop CS6.
I've taken a photo with my Canon DSLR. When I opened the raw with ACDSee, the colour looks perfectly ok.
So I go ahead and open in photoshop. I did nothing to the photo. It still looks ok
Then I'm prompt the Embedded Profile Mismatch error. I go ahead and choose Discard the embedded profile option
And the colour started to get messed up.
And the output is a total diasater
Put the above photo side by side with the raw, the red has became crimson!!
So I tried the other option, Use the embedded profile
The whole picture turns yellowish in Photoshop's interface
And the output is just the same as the third option.
Could someone please guide me how to fix this? Thank you.

always use the embedded profile when opening tagged images in Photoshop - at that point Photoshop will convert the source colors over to your monitor space correctly
if your colors are wrong at that point either your monitor profile is off, or your source colors are not what you think they are - if other apps are displaying correctly you most likely have either a defective monitor profile or source profile issues

you may want to download the PDI reference image to check your monitor and print workflows
and complete five easy steps to profile enlightenment in Photoshop
with your settings, monitor profile and source profiles sorted out it should be pretty easy to pinpoint the problem...

I really need some help on burning a CD please...

Hi All,
I have been having real problems recently with iTunes trying to burn a playlist onto a CD.
Take into account I have never had any problems in the past and this is the first time this issue has arisen.
I have read all the posts about changing preferences and also taking the tick off CD Text and it still has not made a difference.I have also put the Audio CD option on too.
My problem arises when I put the CD in the drive and then it allows me to burn a CD and then it tells me at the end that it has burned the tracks onto the CD in the usual manner, but when I try listening to the CD after either on my laptop or in a stereo it is BLANK and there are no tunes on there.
Has anyone please got any ideas what the problem might be as I have wasted about 10 cds on this and have come up with no answer - PLEASE HELP!!

I'm currently using Athlon XP 2.4, MSI KT400 (MS-6712AV) Mainboard, just bought for 3 months, but today when i start my pc, it comes out on the screen " Checking NVRAM ", than it stop, the system just hanged there, even that i kept restarting. Can anyone tell me what's the problem ? Does anything to do with my motherboard ? Thank you.

emm, you reminded me Dr.Stu, i did remove my PS once yesterday to test on my other PC. this problem occured since i switched back. I did take out the cards and rams one by one, but same result.
Now i unplugged one of the ide cable, i can successfully start my pc to windows, but in roughly few minutes, it'll auto restart. Same problem ?

Hey guys i have posted numerous threads regarding this issue but to no avail so im going to try one last time.
Basically, Itunes works fine UNTIL i start to sync, Then it freezes up for a while then starts to sync a little bit...Then freezes and syncs a little bit..And so on..
It took me 2 WHOLE days to sync 15 episodes of southpark.
I transfered some movies and songs to my wifes laptop and it sync'd everything in around 50 seconds flat, So its now obvious that it must be my PC.
I have USB 2 and i have 6 slots, I have tried ALL the different USB slots and it stays the same.
Does anyone have ANY idea what this could be?
I spoke to the guy who built my PC and he is changing the USB ports, He also said if that doesn't work he will change my motherboard..
Is there a simple solution to this? Am i going to have to change Motherboard? ANY help would really be greatful.

Hold your horses....
Have you done some "rule out" testing? How do you know that the USBs are bad? How do you know that the MB is bad?
1/ do all ports work when you plug a mouse in them?
2/ what is a throughput when you plug a flash drive into these USBs (try 1 at a time) and copy a large file onto it? Test all the ports and compare speeds - are they at least 5-10 MB per sec? If yeah, then they are OK - system wise.
If the USBs don't work and it's a PCI card, look for drivers and if no luck, buy a new card.
If the USBs are built into the MB, then you have no other choice but to replace it, but only as the very last resort. Seems to me that he's trying ot hose you, my friend.....
IN any case, it could be the drivers! Or..iTunes. Did you try to remove & reinstall?

Need some help with wi-fi setup, please

I have just upgraded from Broadband opt 3 to infinity, currently getting stunning performance, but only when wired !
Have been running a wifi network on a Draytek 2600G for several years now without any problems, comprising 1 desktop, 1 laptop, together with PSP's, Playstation, ipods, Nintendo DS etc, etc. Not surprisingly the HH3 doesn't seem to like this setup and runs like a dog.
Seems to me that I should be able to connect my Vigor 2600G to (either) the Openreach modem, or the HH3, and turn off the facilities that I don't want - i.e. use the connectivity of the HH3 with the wifi facilities of the Vigor 2600G?
Any suggestions or advice on how to achieve this would be most welcome.

I think that the Vigor 2600 has some PPPoE functionality, but my understanding was that it is not a VDSL router, so will not stand in totally for the HH3.
What I have been able to do is to;
a/   switch off HH3 wifi
b/   assign IP address to the Vigor 2600 from the range used by HH3
c/   switch off Vigor 2600's DHCP functions
d/   cable from HH3 Ethternet to Vigor 2600
Now connected with all devices talking to Vigor 2600 wifi, and via cable to HH3 & 'Net. It's not clear to me if I can move the DHCP functions to the Vigor, for ease pf management, but a workable solution, albeit involving 3 mains connections as compared with one previously. (Looks like the Draytek 2750 will replace all this with a one box solution)
Some speed numbers; (all downloads)
We previously had BT Broadband running at approx 7.5 MB
Cable connection to HH3 & Infinity runs at 35-37MB
HH3 Wifi produces speeds in the region of 1-2 MB (actually, on my MacBook - the iMac in the corner of the living room refused to connect to the HH3 at all)
Using HH3 with Vigor 2600 wifi gives between 18 & 21 MB

Needing some advice on Adobe Export PDF, please??!!!

So I am rying to use Adobe ExportPDF and I keep repeatedly get the same errors that Internet Exlporer has quit working and we are trying to solve the problem.....I am not sure what I am doong wrong - seemed easy enough.

Need some help with the autosave feature - Please!

I started an animation in flash recently and the autosave feature was turned on. I had a good animation, but decided to play around with it a bit. After a little while, I decided to call it a night and exited the program making sure NOT to save my work. Upon opening that file the next time, I come to find out that Flash has autosaved my file while I was playing around. Now I have a worthless animation, and have to start from scratch. Is there any way to revert to a previous save, or autosave at this point, or am I about to do a lot of work again?

As far as I know, the autosave function isn't able to track down previous versions of the saved document - that calls for a specified version control system. I believe that Flash only saves the file if it is told to. There is a few ways to enable or disable autosave:
in the "New Document" dialog. you can choose to enable Auto-Save.
In the "Document properties" dialog you can set the checkmark.
If these are checked of, there isn't going to happen any auto saving. The problem may be, that there is also a topic called Auto-Recovery. Recovery and Save isn't the same when it comes to Flash, but people tend to think of them as the same. You set the Auto-Recovery feature in the Preferences under General.
Windows: Edit>Preferences : General>Auto-Recovery
Mac OS: Flash Professional>Preferences : General>Auto-Recovery
Both has a default of 10 minutes, and can therefore confuse he user. Please look at the document to make sure, that you haven't unset Auto-Recovery instead of Auto-Save. you can do that by:
Go to the preferences (Ctrl+U on Windows and Command+U on Mac OS) and check to see if Auto-Recovery is set.
Go to the documents properties (Ctrl+J on Windows and Command+J on Mac OS) and check to see if Auto-Save is set.
The first one (in the preferences) is ok to have set. It is the second one, that may have caused trouble for you.
