IPhoto - Import of AVI files

Used to be that when I had a mix of photos and AVI videos, the upload brought both and it was an easy copy to get at the videos.
Now, since '08 (version 7.1.1), after the upload, I get a list of AVI files and even some IMG files withe the statement that iPhoto found invalid files. If I use the old version, it works as it has for years.
Any solutions to this?

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Canon IXUS 950 won't import large AVI files into iPhoto

The new canon Ixus 950 IS wont import large (over 50mb) AVI files in iPhoto, why not?
They sit on the SD card and then sometimes subsequent pics and video's don't upload.
If there are say, 3 x 40mb files they dont upload either... After waiting ages the box pops up, unable to import.
I can individually import the AVI files under 50mb
I also note that the hard drive icon for the camera does not appear on the desktop or the finder so I could not 'drag' them in either...
    Any ideas?

I have a similar problem with importing large AVIs from my Canon A610. iPhoto would import everything else (usually) except the large AVIs, which it claims is unreadable. In this particular case (~470MB file), it plays in QuickTime, I've resaved it using QT (still won't import) and converted it from MJPEG to Cinepak (still won't import). I'm now considering cutting the AVI up into smaller chunks and importing those... but any other options before that?
Misc computer details: Main HD is 120GB with 30 for Boot Camp, 80 remains for Mac OS X, but the iPhoto Library is on an external HD (also 120GB, same model as internal HD except not SATA) formatted to FAT32. Would 10.4.11 make a difference here?

  • Import 2 avi files and combine in 1 dvd

    Hi En experts!
I have installed the Encore Cs5 Trial with Win7 64bit.
Now i will import 2 avi files (part 1 and part 2 for a video) and combine in sequence and after write a dvd for my tv-dvd player..is possible? Give me please instructions...
Thank's and sorry for my poor english !
    Ciao from Italy!

With two separate Assets, I would recommend doing one separate Timeline for each one, as this can circumvent some issues, when one gangs Assets onto one Timeline. If you need continuous play for multiple Timelines, then just use Playlists and you can choose to play any/all Timeline(s), and in any order desired.
Even with separate Timelines, one can still use Chapter Markers and can then use Chapter Playlists to access those as desired.
Make sure that you do NOT use any Overrides anywhere - use Playlists, or Chapter Playlists instead.
    Happy authoring,

  • Import DV AVI Files with 5.1 Audio

To my surprise, Encore would not import DV AVI files from Premiere with 5.1 Audio. I much prefer to do my transcoding in Encore rather than in Premiere so I don't have to guess how much disk space will remain after menus and other content. Also, I think Encore transcoding is more efficient than Premiere.
Yet, cheaper and less sophisticated applications such as Nerovision will import DV AVI files with 5.1 audio, and give you 5.1 DVD's.
Which leads to another question, why does a cheaper application just give you the Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, while a fee has to be paid to Surcode to get it in the Adobe applications?

You cannot create a 5.1 Dolby Digital file in Encore, so the answer is an emphatic "YES" to the planning & budgeting.
You really should be doing this anyway, as it is a real eye opener. There are some superb Excel spreadsheet bit budgeting tools, as well as a simple enough manual method. It should be detailed in the FAQ.
As far as DTS goes, you'll need an encoder again. The only plugin version I am aware of is for Steinberg's Nuendo & Cubase systems, but both DTS and SurCode make them.
The SurCode DTS-DVD encoder is dated now - 5 years or so - and the Nuendo one sounds better. Having said that, the DTS-PSE sounds even better, as well as having DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 capability (both of which are DVD Legal).
Even better are the soon-to-be-released DTS-HD SAS & MAS encoders.
These are primarily for the Blue-ish type discs, but also cater for so-called "legacy" encoding as well, and the detail is even better than the DTS-PSE version. You can hear the difference in the detail where the top end sounds more natural & open. Whatever version you get will make Dobly Dirgital sound dull & muddy by comparison.
Quality can be improved by feeding the encoder with 24 bit audio too - this also applies to Dolby Digital.
Bitrates for DTS are either 754 kb/sec or 1509 kb/sec, and come in 2 flavours:
Compact (.cpt) and Padded (.dts) - either can use the lower bitrate, and there is no difference in audio quality between the CPT and DTS flavours. I recommend using the higher bitrate personally.
Both types are supported in Passthrough mode in Encore - that is to say they import, and multiplex correctly but cannot be previewed.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I import a .AVI file into my project?

I want to import a .AVI file into my video project but Final Cut Pro will not import it. Final Cut says the file is not recognized but it plays with Quicktime.

Do you get the warning "Media files are not optimized for FCP. Either recapture the media or use Media Manager to crate new copies of the files to improve performance for multi-stream playback."?
    What does this mean?
I can import and edit the files no problem either, except for that waring, which concerns me.
It means you will not be able to use the multiclip feature with these files because your Macintosh is working very hard to decode them on the fly. More than one stream will choke your machine.
Your AVIs are visible in FCP because you happen to have acquired an AVI file that uses a codec you have available on your machine.
AVI isn't even supported by Microsoft; it's been a totally concatenated delivery wrapper for more than a decade. It only survives because of entrenchment.
Use Get INfo on one of your AVI clips, figure out what codec was used, use Google to find out what you can about the codec, and decide how you want to proceed. You want to determine what your output is going to be and work backwards from that decision. For instance, if you're going to distribute a standard MPEG2 DVD, you want to edit using conventional DV. Transcode you AVI files to DV using Compressor.
Your easiest solution will be to edit on a PC that does handles the AVI natively or to contact whoever gae you the files and demand they provide you with clips you can edit on a Macintosh.

  • Can't import uncompressed AVI files in CS6 Premiere Pro

    Hi!
I'm using Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro on Windows 7 Pro (64bit) but can't import uncompressed AVI files.
I get the error that the file has no valid fomat or is damaged, but I can watch the avi videos without a
    problem with the media player.
I also have CS4 installed, with CS4 I can import this files.
What can I do to solve this?

AVI is a wrapper, what is inside YOUR wrapper - Exactly what is INSIDE the video you are editing?

  • I can't get Premier Elements 10 to import an AVI file from my computer.

I just bought Adobe Premier 10 two days ago, and I'm trying to import an AVI file from my computer.  It says Add Media Failure.  This type of file is not supported or the required codec is not installed.  The program installed all right, so I don't know what to do since I bought this software to create movies with the video from my camera, which is in AVI format.

Hi Bill, thanks for replying so quickly.
In review of your suggestions, I cannot see where these would be the answer. While I do use 2 computers, both have identical OS, APE-10, and Quicktime versions as well as camera software/drivers. I have not updated the camera firmware in some time, so I do not think this can be the issue, besides I have used both computers in the past few weeks, with no issues, until just recently. Perhaps it was a Win7 update that messed it up?
However, while waiting for a forum response, I did some further research and found a codec pack (windows.7.codec.pack v.4.03) on CNET. The description sounded exactly like the issues I am having so I downloaded and installed it. (I also converted the original AVI files to MPEG-2, just in case).
After the codec pack install, the AVI files loaded into APE and showed with no issues.
I have not yet tried the MOV files as they were not mentioned in the codec pack info, other than; 'and many more'. (one issue at a time!) I did download and installed the latest QT app (but it was the same version I had) so maybe there was something corrupt in the original. We shall see!
I cannot try it now as I am presently rendering the video, but if I still cannot load the full video MOV files, other than audio only, as old Arnie would say, "I'll be back!" (according to the APE estimate, about 1:12.
Thanks again for the assist. If it helps you in any way, I will check the box that says the reply fixed the problem! ('Was this Helpful?')

  • Can't Import large .avi file from digital camera into iPhoto 08

I have a digital camera with a 4GB SD card. I was shooting video and have several small .avi files on the card and one large .avi file (2.67 GB) on the same card. I did not have a problem importing the small files. iPhoto hung while trying to import the large file. I read in this forum that I should use Image Capture, which I tried. When I used Image Capture on the smaller files (just to see how it worked), my camera would flash while it was transferring. When I tried Image Capture on the large file, the camera did not flash and after about 20 minutes, there didn't seem to be anything going on with the transfer. I also tried an old card reader through Image Capture, and that didn't work either. Should Image Capture be able to handle this size file? Do you know of any way to break up the large file into smaller files on the SD card? What am I missing? Thanks!

Canon's cameras do not mount on the Desktop. It's a 'feature' of the brand.
There are several possibilities for Image Capture - including minor directory damage on the card etc. The only solution is get the card to mount, and that means a recent Card Reader.

  • Import of avi files from camera is SLOOOOW

My Fuji FinePix Z10fd shoots video in avi format. Importing these into iPhoto 6 is so slow that the process is almost worthless. It literally takes up to 15 minutes to import a 4 minute avi file. Once the files are in, I can view them, move them into iMovie HD, etc. No problem there.
The import of photos is fine. Its just the avi files causing me grief.

  • How do I import an AVI file for use with FInal Cut Express

How do I import or use an AVI file with Final Cut Express?
Thank you. Do I need to convert my AVI file and what is the
easiest way to do that? Thank you.

You should convert the media to QuickTime. Without knowing any specifics most likely the simplest way is to use MPEG Streamclip.

  • CS4 Windows problems: crash very often, stuck when import certain avi files

The followling problems are in CS4 (newer updated) Windows (Windows XP SP3):
I am using Premiere Pro in CS4 and the program crashes so often (it crashes more than 10 times in one afternoon). It usually starts when I place clip, photoshop file, or other assets to sequence. If it starts leave a lot of frames while I pull the asset (there will be the same frame over the path my mouse went), it is a signal to crash soon. After it restarts, it usually loses the last saved information (even I saved the project way before it crashes). I do not know whether other users see the similar behavior.
The second problem does not look like only for CS4. It happens in CS3 too. When I place an AVI file (not sure whether other format behaves the same), the import program will stuck in the end (while it shows "generate peaks from xxx.avi"). It will take forever and I never successfully finish importing the file. I worked around and realized it only happens to the avi files I captured from Movie maker (use Auto capture option). The avi file can be played in Windows Media player. If I use Movie maker to cut the end of the avi file, the new avi file can be imported to Premiere without any problem. It seems the last few frames in the captured avi file has problem so the import subfunction will stuck there. I am not sure whether this is the case. If it is, the program should be "SMART" enough to go on or ignore the bad frames.
    Any idea?

Thanks, Harm. This brings to another problem I had. While I am using PR to capture DV from my two mini-DV cameras, sometimes it just generates a lot flicks or "snow" in the avi files. But with Movie Maker, the same tape will not have such problem. This is why I am using Movie maker to capture the movie since it is accessible beside PR. It seems the PR problem is only for the last few frames so I just cut the last few frames off. I do not know why PR cannot just generate an Error message to UI so we will not just wait there for hours. I did some programming to control many instruments and I understand I cannot project every problem the program will encount, but at least I can generate an error message to tell the user where the problem is. Is this the fundmental guideline for programmers? If PR does like the format, let us know when it reads. It is very frustrated while you wait there hours and hours without any idea why it stucks!

  • Final cut 604 won't let me import dv avi files

i just get file error, denied 0 recognized, unknown messages when
i try to bring them in.
these are straight dv avi files. qtplayer opens and plays them fine.
i tried changing permissions so everybody can access them. no luck.
the project is a dv project so there shouldn't be anything wrong
    there. what have i overlooked?
i can also batch convert them using mpeg streamclip to qt dv files
    and they work fine.
shouldn't avi files import into fcp without issue as long as they're
    standard dv within the container?
i emailed a couple of the short ones to a friend who's on fcp 5 and
osx 10.4.11. i'm on fcp 6.0.4 and 10.5.x. he was able to load them into
    fcp without issue.
    thanks,
    BabaG

You can use [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com] to batch process the files.
As Jerry suggested, export them to QuickTime and choose the DV codec at 100% quality.
