IPhoto import to Aperture

I imported my iPhoto Events into Aperture. They show under the iPhoto Library. What would happen if I deleted my iPhoto Library? It takes up quite a bit of disk space.

DSloan,
Welcome to the user supported Aperture Discussion Group.
It's been a while since I imported my iPhoto project, but I believe that the default is to copy the pictures into the Aperture library. In other words, there should be no link between your Aperture library and your iPhoto library if you didn't change a setting along the way.
Is this your first usage of Aperture? If so, then you should be able filter your library on photos whose "File Status" is "Referenced" and see absolutely nothing. That indicates Aperture is managing everything it needs in its library and is not dependent on anything like your iPhoto library. In that case, it would be safe, in terms of the Aperture library, to delete your iPhoto library.
However, as georgemd noted, backups are key! Don't delete your iPhoto library until you set up a vault and back up your Aperture library first!

  • Do Descriptions from iPhoto import to Aperture

Do descriptions from iPhoto import to Aperture, if so, is there a way to make the description or caption show up in an Aperture slideshow?  Pre-Purchase question.
    Thanks

I don't know.  But with the recent upgrades to iPhoto and Aperture, the two programs share the Library file format (Libraries are no longer specific to one program or the other; any upgraded Library can be opened in either upgraded program), so the question becomes: where does the "description" in iPhoto show in Aperture, and can it be shown in a slide show?
IOW, importing has been removed from the problem.
Apple has listed a good bit of cross-progam information here.  Don't know if iPhoto descriptions are covered, though.

  • IPhoto import: does Aperture import Original and Edited, or just Edited?

If you edit an image in iPhoto, iPhoto creates a copy of the image and stores the original in its own folder. Further edits are on the copy.
When Aperture imports from iPhoto, does it import the Original, the Edited image, or both?
My hunch is it imports the Edited image, and the Original will be lost. Love to know for sure!

When you import you'll get a stack for any image that
you have edited in iPhoto. Your edited photo will be
on top with the master behind it.
This is excellent news. With all the bad news about Aperture I'd feared the worst.

  • Should i delete my photos from iPhoto after I import to aperture

should i delete my photos from iPhoto after I import to aperture? What is the easiest way to do this?

    Depends.
Did you copy the files into the Aperture Library on Import?
If so, it's safe to do so. My tip: wait a few weeks until you're happy that you're committed to Aperture.
Drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the trash.

  • Importing iPhoto library to Aperture 3.1.2 still not working

I am very disappointed with Aperture. I bought it last week on the Mac App Store, with great expectations. But I cannot import my iPhoto library. After a few minutes, Aperture crashes unexpectedly. When relaunched, a lot of pictures and events are missing. I am particularly bitter when I read that the last release is supposed to have fixed the "iPhoto import crashes"!
I read a lot of similar issues, with a bunch of ideas for fixing, which I tried with no success (quitting every other program, not running Time Machine, rebuilding the iPhoto library...)
    Any idea?

    Adam,
I would expect that if Aperture crashes during import, that there would be a lot of items missing, as it did not actually complete the operation.  When you try again, I would start with a new Aperture library, as you don't want parts of your library duplicated.
How much space is left on the drive on which your Aperture library is located?
Are you sure the iPhoto library is free from corruption?  I haven't used iPhoto in a while, but you may want to check the structure of your library to make sure it is okay. [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2638]

  • Importing into Aperture 3 from iPhoto as referenced files

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't find anything this topic...
I've just upgraded to Aperture 3. In Aperture 2, my way of working was to store RAW images in iPhoto and import as referenced files into Aperture. This was very straightforward. Now, I have 2 problems:
1 - I can't see how to import referenced images from iPhoto. If I use the import command, my iPhoto images don't show up in the list of locations to import from; if I use the iPhoto browser in Aperture and drag from that, it imports the file into the Aperture library rather than importing as a referenced file...
2 - If I import using the iPhoto browser, not only does it import into the Aperture library, it imports the jpeg preview rather than the RAW file.
The only way I can see to get the RAW file into Aperture is to find it in the Finder then import into the Aperture library. This seems excessively long-winded and also duplicates the file, using up extra disk space.
    I'm using Aperture 3.0.1 and iPhoto 7.1.5
Thanks in advance for your input

I have not imported an iPhoto library because my workflow is to to use Aperture for storing and archiving Raw files and iPhoto for exported jpegs.
However the instruction in the Aperture 3 PDF Manual are as follows:-
    To import your iPhoto library
Choose File > Import > iPhoto Library.
Select the iPhoto library in the dialog that appears.
Choose a location for the imported images by doing one of the following:
    • To store imported masters in the Aperture library: Choose “In the Aperture Library” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
    • To import the files as referenced images stored in their current location on your hard disk: Choose “In their current location” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
Tip: Choosing“Intheircurrentlocation”isrecommended.Whenyouchoosethisoption, Aperture refers to the original files in their current location and does not have to duplicate the files, which doubles the disk space needed to store the files. For more information about referenced images, see What Are Managed Images and Referenced Images?
    • To store imported masters as referenced images in the Pictures folder on your hard disk: Choose Pictures from the Store Files pop-up menu.
    • To store imported masters as referenced images in a location other than the Pictures folder: Choose “Choose” from the Store Files pop-up menu and select a folder. Choose “No folder” from the Subfolders pop-up menu to specify that the files be stored as separate, individual files in the selected folder. You can also specify that Aperture create a hierarchy of subfolders with specific folder names to hold your files.

  • Short Slo Mo video imported to Aperture or iPhoto via cable (Air Drop not supported on my iMac): only the SloMo section imports. Not the rest. Any fixes?

Short Slo Mo video imported to Aperture or iPhoto via cable (Air Drop not supported on my iMac): only the SloMo section imports. Not the rest. Any fixes?

Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission.  Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions?  I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account.  It did not change how files are output.

  • Problem Importing to Aperture from iPhoto

I have already imported the entire iPhoto Library to Aperture, but several images are missing.  I now want to import the missing images from iPhoto to Aperture.  The Aperture Manual states that, in Aperture, I should be able to open the iPhoto Browser by using File>Import>iPhoto Browser, but when I go File>Import I do not get the iPhoto Browser option.  How can I select specific images in iPhoto to import into Aperture?

The Aperture Manual states that, in Aperture, I should be able to open the iPhoto Browser by using File>Import>iPhoto Browser, but when I go File>Import I do not get the iPhoto Browser option.
Some parts of the manual need updating. The iPhoto browser has been discontinued, when the unified Aperture-iPhoto library has been introduced.
    If you want to import selectively from iPhoto, open your iPhoto library in Aperture and create an album;
add the images you want to use in Aperture to that album
then select the album in the Info panel and export this album as a new Aperture library.    File > Export > Album as library.
Switch to your main Aperture library (File > Switcch to Library)  and import the small library with the iPhoto album.
    Regards
    Léonie
Added: You could also simply open iPhoto on the iPhoto Library and Aperture on the main Aperture library and drag the photos you want from the iPhoto window to a project in Aperture. But that will only give you the current jpeg versions, not the original files as well.

  • I have just imported Iphoto library into aperture library, can I delete now the Iphoto Library ?

Hi, I have juste imported Iphoto library into Aperture Library (did a copy) - can I delete my Iphoto library as I won't use Iphoto anymore ?
    Thanks Hélème

    Helene,
Both of those things you pointed out are mere *metadata*.
When you imported your iPhoto library, since you did a copy, your libraries are completely independent.
When I was in your situation, I moved my iPhoto library to an external disk and then went to the Aperture library to see how it behaved, even though i was 99.99% sure my iPhoto and Aperture libraries were separate.

  • Import iPhoto 11 to Aperture 3 w/o duplicates

I have a new Aperture 3 on my MacBook Pro, using OSX Lion.  I have followed the directions for attempting various library additions to the A3.  Has worked fine, using drag and drop and such.
I attempted to load some iPhoto images and ran into an odd surprise.  I got duplicates when I copied the images.  Various searches have revealed this is to be expected when uising iPhoto as a source this way.  That is, when using the iPhoto browser to get the images.
Lesson learned.  I don't want these duplicates as it just uses up space and makes it more awkward to work with the images.
I am prepared to simply import my entire iPhoto library.  Makes sense, as that is what I bought A3 for.  However, I am interested in what actually happens when I do the import.  I have presently 18,000 plus images and around 75 short (under one minute) videos in iPhoto.
I read the advice given by Apple to use the iPhoto library as the storage location ("in their current location").  I have no problem with this as a strategy.  I already have a vault set up and use a Time Capsule.
However, my iPhoto library is arranged in EVENTS and of course A3 is PROJECTS.
What happens to the names of the events?
Do these become the names of the projects?
Will this result in duplicates as I got when using the iPhoto browser?
I have also discovered that after I import images rom iPhoto, I can safely delete them in iPhoto and the image remains intact in A3.  I am trusting this is universally true.

Thanks so much for useful advice.  Here is my update and status, using the advice you gave.
I made an import of my iPhoto library to Aperture.  My choice was to import originals (Masters?) and not use referenced images.  I agreed with your logic that it was easier and safer to mess around with images in Aperture and not be concerned about this having an effect on my iPhoto library.
The process went smoothly, albeit slowly.  The actual loading didn't take terribly long with 18,000 plus images. What lasted for a long while was the subsequent "processing".  As well, my Time Machine was updating at the same time and that really slowed down my MacBook.
However, it went off without a hitch.  I even had an electrical brownout right in the middle of this, but my battery back up saved the day and there was no interruption.
Everything seems to be in place and working well.
I did leave some images in place from previous tests of importing.  They were unaffected (though some of these had the duplicates I read so much about).
I want to be crystal clear about what I just did.
I now have imported to my Aperture library a mess of images which I can fiddle with as I wish.  This will have NO effect on the iPhoto library....correct?
And vice versa.  I have images in the iPhoto libray which I can now fiddle with and these will have NO effect on the Aperture library?
In effect, I can treat both libraries as separate sets of images, correct?  Kinda like having an encylopedia to use in Hamburg and another in Paris.
One more small detail.  In Aperture, as I said, some of the images were imported with duplicates.  These are shown as stacks and one is shown as iPhoto original and one is iPhoto edited.
I am guessing that I can leave these as is, or I can delete the iPhoto edited image with no effect on the iPhoto library.
    Again, thanks

  • Help! Can't Import iPhoto Library into Aperture

I have a new MacBook Pro with Lion, Aperture 3, and iPhoto 11.
I followed the pre loaded video directions and every time I receive this message:
"Importing libraries from versions earlier than iPhoto 7.1.5 is not supported. Please upgrade your iPhoto library with iPhoto 7.1.5 or later."
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Do you receive this error message from iPhoto or from Aperture?
You are supposed to upgrade your iPhoto Libraries to version '11 by opening them in the most recent iPhoto version, before importing to Aperture.

  • Import iPhoto Title as Aperture Version Name?

QUESTION: How do you import your iPhoto library such that the Titles you've applied in iPhoto become the Version Names in Aperture?
DETAILS: Upon import, Aperture ignores my custom iPhoto Titles ("Lunch at Summit", for example) and replaces them with the original file name (DSCF2966, for example). I hate looking at a screen full of DSCxxxxx names. Worse, I've spent a lot of time titling my pictures in iPhoto. I don't want to lose that work.
BACKGROUND: In iPhoto, I typically Batch Change a just-imported set of photos, setting the Title to nothing. Then I give meaningful names to pictures that I care about titling. This way, I reduce visual clutter on the photo display; any title text I see is there because I typed it in. When I try this trick in Aperture, it displays "<untitled>" for any pictures I remove the camera's DSCxxxxx from.
QUESTION 2: Is it a bad idea to get rid of the camera DSCxxxx Version Names?
I've experimented with the Import settings, searched these forums, the web, and the Aperture help files, to no avail.
    Thanks!
    David Long

Kirby, thanks for your helpful response. I just experimented with the Version Name field in the iPhoto import dialog and found that setting Version Name to Version Name in the
    File-->Import-->iPhoto Library...
import dialog still does not preserve the Titles from iPhoto.
    However, using
    File-->Import-->Show iPhoto Browser...
DOES preserve the iPhoto Titles. Unfortunately, this method loses much of the Places information in the iPhoto library. I describe which Places info gets lost in this forum post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11229662#11229662
So, this leaves us with a conundrum:
-If we use the "Show iPhoto Browser..." method to import, we retain our Titles but lose our Faces and Places data.
-If we use the "Import-->iPhoto Library..." method, we retain [most of] our Places and Faces data, but completely lose our Titles from iPhoto.
Either way, we lose some of the metadata work we put into our iPhoto library.
Anybody know a solution to this problem?
    ...David

  • Does anybody know why I get doubles of every image I import from iPhoto 11 to Aperture?

With the upcoming demise of the MobileMe Galleries, I'm making lots of changes to how photos are organized. I'm moving the galleries to a new host. But, I want to pull most of the events, etc from iPhoto 11 to Aperture. iPhoto 11 has been a nightmare to me, and I just want to be done with it. I find that when I import albums from iPhoto to Aperture, I'm getting doubles of every single image. I've set Aperture not to import duplicates, and messed around in other ways, but it's still requiring a LOT of time to delete all these duplicates. Anybody have an idea to fix this?

There's nothing broken and nothing to be fixed. When you migrate from iPhoto to Aperture it imports all the versions - Masters and previews - to the Aperture Library. This is so your migration is lossless.
When you import from iPhoto to Aperture you'll note the versions are tagged 'iPhoto original', 'iPhoto edited' etc so this means it's simple to find the versions in Aperture and delete the ones you might not want.

  • Just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos-not entire library!

I just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos to edit, not entire i Photo library! I read manual and it says:
Browsing and Selecting Images in Your iPhoto Library
You use the Aperture iPhoto Browser to review iPhoto images and import specific images into the Aperture library. The iPhoto Browser gives you a handy way of looking for certain images without having to import your entire iPhoto library.
So, where do I review the iPhoto images...there is nothing in there that says "iPhoto Library"   Everything I see pertains to Aperture Library which of course is empty since I haven't imported (or dragged) any photos in there yet.
Also is tech support available for Aperture?  I have Apple Extended Support and I sure would love it if I had individual help.  I have a deadline --3 days to edit 300 photos and I'm a complete amateur.  iPhoto doesn't  have the capability to erase parts of a face (I need to contour the neck of a mannequin to make it proportionate to the separate head I put on top of it. I'm sure Aperture must have a tool to help me do that!  At least I hope so.

Sounds more like a job for Photoshop to me
if I decide to import entire iPhoto library into Aperture will it delete my iPhoto library?
    No.
