IPhoto improvements / RAW improvement?

Hey gang,
I just wanted to report something that may just be coincidental, but then again may not. Is anyone else seeing improvement in the quality (color primarily) in the RAW processing within Aperture since the OS X 10.4.4 upgrade?
Coincidentally, I had been doing some data reorganization on a couple computers and inadvertently deleted a slide presentation in iPhoto that I needed. As a result I decided to recreate the slideshow but this time using iPhoto from iLife 06 that I just bought. I am seeing some significant improvement in the color handling in iLife, particularly the rendering of RAW files taken from my Canon. Unfortunately, I haven't had time in the past couple of days to run Aperture tests, but I wanted to ping everyone to see what your experience has been.
I'm anxious now to do some in-depth Aperture testing to see how my images fare. I use a Canon 20d, CR2 RAW format.
I'm all ears...what is everyone else seeing? Here's another question -- is it possible that there were CoreImage/RAW handling upgrades delivered not by update, but with iLife 06? (I don't even know if iLife using CoreImage or not).

The RAW conversions are part of Mac OS X. So iPhoto an Aperture would have the same quality conversions. The difference is the controls and the whole rest of the software. These services are there for any program to use or not use. I doubt Adobe

  • Can iPhoto process RAW files?

Love to shoot digital photos.  Can iPhoto process RAW files without conversion to JPEG or problems?
Or do I need to purchase Aperture?
Running OSX 10.6.8   2.66 GHZ Intel Duo Core  8 Gigs RAM only--enough for using Aperture?

iPhoto, yes Aperture, yes.  Read here > iPhoto '11: Edit RAW-format photos
But the minimum requirements for iPhoto 11 and Aperture are OS X v10.7.5.
You would have to upgrade to v10.7 Lion in order to run either iPhoto or Aperture.
Lion can be purchased from Apple Customer Support at 800-767-2775.
OR, if your Mac meets v10.8 Mountain Lion requirements >  System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
You can upgrade directly from v10.6.8 to v10.8 Mountain Lion. iPhoto and Aperture both are compatible with v10.8.

  • Can IPhoto accept raw files?

    Can IPhoto accept raw files?

So you just needed me to furnish you with a more thorough explanation.
Why did you not just say that, Terence?
I'm truly grateful for anyone's help and advice, I really am.
But surely instead of the above 'statement', why not just point out which information you required?
Anyhow, I'm on Snow Leopard. I'm not sure which version of iPhoto, but it's the most current version for Snow Leopard. My library is 16,588 images. I have around 256GB free space on the HD.
The thing is, though, I have had absolutely no problem with it up until last week when I added about 100 PEF images from my Pentax K-x and then everything ground, literally, to a halt.
When I import the raw images to Image Capture or Photoshop they're fine, no speed issues.
Thanks for everyone, including Terence, who offers advice.

  • Iphoto Improvement Proposals

iPhoto Menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
is the route to the developers.
Some comments: iPhoto is no longer being actively developed. It will be replaced by a new app in 2015.
You can create keyboard shortcuts for yourself in the SystemPreferences
There is no relation at all between iPhoto on iOS and iPhoto on the Mac. This is one of the areas being approached with the new Photos app.

  • Importing into iPhoto, edited RAW photos from Photoshop CS3

I edit all my photos in Photoshop CS3. Sometimes I just batch edit many of them. But when I import these edited images, iPhoto only shows them in unedited form. How do I import these edited images into iPhoto, and yet maintain the edits.
I am a professional photographer, and the only reason I need to import these images into iPhoto, is that I use the web galleries as the viewing tool for my clients.
    Thanks.

    coxpix:
When iPhoto imports a RAW file it creates a jpg version of it for display and editing with by iPhoto. Therefore, when you edit a RAW with CS3 you must import the new edited version, of whatever format you chose to save as, and use that one. It's the nature of the beast. All edits to RAW files when saved must be saved as a new file.
For what it's worth, the following may be of some help in using CS3 with iPhoto:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto and RAW files from Olympus camera

I have an Olympus SP-500UZ and i have been using it without any problem, but today i took some pictures in RAW format to see the difference but i was unable to open them either using iPhoto or Preview. I can see the thumbnail of each image in Finder and i have opened the files using Olympus Master (it came with the camera) but i haven't been able to see them with iPhoto or get them in my Library. • Import and Export with iPhoto and Raw

    I use PSE10 for AppleMac.
How do I export raw photos from iPhoto into PSE10 please, for editing?  I have set my preferences in iPhoto for editing in PSE .  The PSE edit page opens up blank - no raw picture editor or picture appears.  (I can take pictures into the software from picture folders in the usual way and work on them).
The obverse of this issue is, that  'export' is greyed out, so, even if I complete an edit direct
from a  folder I cannot export it back to iPhoto.
    Thanks.

  • IPhoto importing RAW, then converting to jpg--losing RAW file completely

Okay, I've read through some of the posts on similar issues, but I still have some questions. I've always used iPhoto to import my RAW files (since it supported it anyway) and never had problems. I bought a new G5 and it seems like this problem has shown itself since. I went back to my G4 though, and found that all my old .NEF's are now jpg's as well. If I do a search on my computer for .NEF's it brings back nothing having to do with .NEF files.
In the past I've imported using iPhoto because of the ease of keeping track of the original files. After importing I open them in Photoshop CS with Camera Raw. I cannot do this now. The weird thing is that viewing it in iPhoto the extension that it shows is .NEF, but when I look at the file in the Finder it shows that it's a .jpg. Was there an update recently that changed anything considerably? This is a very frustrating problem. JPG files are pretty worthless to me because I can't get the same amount of info/size out of them.
Any insights to this would be very appreciated.
    Thanks.
EDIT: I've forgotten to include other info. My camera is a Nikon D70 (supported by Apple). I'm using all the latest versions of OS X, and iPhoto. I have PS CS.

    Hi heloguy,
Did you look in the Originals folders on each date?
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • IPhoto and raw files

I bought my iMac g5 mainly for managing and editing (using the Gimp) my digital photos and I'm beginning to regret it.
I always shoot in raw (D70), but when I double click a picture in iPhoto it opens up a jpeg version (converted with who knows what settings) in the Gimp.
Surely if I click on a raw file the program to which the file is sent should get a raw file and not some converted version?
In fact it is a little wierder than this; if I drag a raw file onto the Gimp in the toolbar it opens up the raw file in Gimp (actually using the ufraw converter). However, if the raw file has ever been double-clicked, then Gimp opens up with iPhoto's jpeg.
There may be a setting somewhere to change this aberrent behaviour, but I haven't found it yet.
    Anyone have an idea?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Don't regret buying the Mac. The problem is simply the iPhoto is not the software you should be using. I'm still working out what I want to do. I think it's going to work like this....
Use the software that came with the camera to download the image data. Store the images into folders with folder names that give the date and place or subject. (I will use either Canon or Nikon software depending on the camera.)
Use "shoebox" to tag and index the images. Shoebox allows much more sophisticatd tagging than iPhoto. For example tag the subject "Nicholas" and location "Los Angeles" and then a querry for "family" in "California" will find the image.
Shoebox, like iPhoto can launch an editor
The Editor I like is Gimp. Clean interface and it is fast.
however I'm keeping an open mind about PS.
I just started using the Mac too My other computer runs Linux. (Linux and Darwin are very much alike.) The image
data will continue to live on the Linux computer's RAID system.
I will import cropped and color corrected JPEG images into iPhoto as needed when I want to make slide shows and books and DVDs to give away.
I intend to re-evaluate this after iPhoto 6 is released in a January.
iPhoto RAW conversion system is just not targeted at the small minority of people who in the film era could see the difference between (say) Agfa's "Portrait 160" and Fugicolor 200. or between Velia and Kodachrome. Apple was just not thinking of people like that when they devaloped thier RAW
software. They were attempting to address the larger mass consummer market.

  • IPhoto 6 RAW help!

What's going on with my files? I save edited RAW files in Photoshop back to iPhoto, but it's not there when I go into iPhoto, only the original shows up. The file is there inside the very convuluded folder though. Older versions would read the edited file, why can't this version? This is crazy or am I'm doing some wrong. Very frustrating.
Also I see iPhoto changed the way it files it's folders.....again. (modified and originals) But the modified version (photoshop edited) is in the originals folder and the non-edited is in the modified folder. What gives???? HELP!!!

    Hi Hana,
Reading this article might help you understand the difference between iPhoto 5 and 6 with the way it works with RAW.

  • IPhoto/Photoshop/RAW issues

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can suggest a solution to this.
I've started shooting raw with my Canon 450D. iPhoto seems to be able to import these files without any issues.
I want to be able to edit these files in Photoshop as editing them in iPhoto defeats the purpose of shooting raw.
What I'm doing is control clicking on a raw photo in iPhoto and choosing "edit in external editor". This brings the photo into Photoshop opening the raw editing dialog box. Perfect.
Then the trouble starts - where to from here? If I make adjustments in the Photoshop raw editor and click "done", the image is not updated in iPhoto. If I do a "save as" and try and import a jpeg or tiff or so on into iPhoto, it won't allow this because there is already an image with that filename in there. I can save a jpeg to the desktop and rename the file, import this into iPhoto but then I would have to delete the raw file because I don't want two of the same image in there. I also notice if I save my raw file out from Photoshop as a tiff or psd and put it in iPhoto, iPhoto will change the date and time to a random date and time which is neither the time the photo was shot or the time I saved it out in Photoshop.
Anyway all of these things are incredibly cumbersome, there must be an easier way, right?
    Cheers, Darren

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Terence mentioned Expression Media. I use it as my primary DAM (digital asset application) and iPhoto to create special projects, MMe galleries, books, calendars, etc.
EM is considered one of the top DAM apps. You can learn about it and other applications at The DAM Forum - Index. EM lets you manage your folders as you want, edit and write ITPC metadata to the files, has version control in editing if so desired, both with EM's editing tools or a 3rd party like Photoshop. It will be a supported on Macs.
If you want to the RAW photo in iPhoto it's best to use a 3rd party editor that is designed for raw. The downside to that is you will have to save the edited version outside of the iPhoto library and import as a new, separate file.
For what it's worth here are some tips on using PS with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current.
There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • IPhoto supports Raw File?

    Hi,

  • IPhoto importing RAW images

Can anyone help please I have just tried to import from the card reader on my iMac some RAW images and it comes up with an error message saying it cannot read the format or the files are corrupt how can that be I thought iPhoto could deal with RAW images. I am using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ72 bridge camera.

Aperture and iPhoto get their RAW support from the OS. Here is the list of RAW formats supported by OS X:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
I don't see your camera on that list at this time, so it probably won't work. Apple adds RAW format support all the time, but never gives a heads up on whether any particular camera will be supported, or when.

  • IPhoto 6 RAW import failure

I have a Canon G2 and tried to use iPhoto 6 to import photos from my camera. However after it tries for awhile it lists all of the .CRW files and indicates the file format is unsupported or etc...
Based on posts it looks like this is a common problem so I'm hoping for some advice...

This is an old question of mine. Not sure why but the G2's RAW format is not supported and this is documented.
