IPhoto in Tiger OS X 10.4.11

How do I get iPhoto on a Mac that is running OS X 10.4.11? I bought a PowerBook G4 used for a second computer and it has the above mentioned OS X installed in it, but no iLife, or at least no iPhoto. How do I go about getting the right version of iPhoto?

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
You have two choices
1 - install from the restore disks that came with the computer (if you got them from the seller) - do a custom install of bundled software only - click here for the MacWorld detailed instructions on this
2 - install from purchased iLife disks (it probably would be convenient to have the same version on both systems)

I bought and installed Mac Os X 10.4, but Iphoto remained to the Version 2 and cannot be upgraded. Is this correct?

iPhoto 2 was the last free version. you have to buy the iLife suite to get the latest version of iPhoto. iPhoto does not come with Tiger.

Is it possible to install iPhoto from the Tiger Upgrade DVD? I removed iPhoto and now I need to re-install it. I don't want to waster $79.00 for iLife programs I won't use.

It is possible. Install the bundled appplications but select the Custom install and untick everything but iPhoto. I would suggest you double-check before pressing "Continue".

    John,
Just to clarify the other reply you got to your question.....
iLife applications are shipped from Apple in one of two ways: (1) Pre-loaded on certain new computers, and (2) Purchased for $79 from Apple
iLife applications are not part of any operating system, such as Tiger. Therefore, you won't find them on your Tiger upgrade disk.
It appears to me you have one of two choices if you truly need iPhoto again:
    (1) Run the software restore program as directed by the other reply. Note: This option will load whatever version of iPhoto that shipped with your computer; if your computer shipped with iPhoto 4, that's what will be installed. iPhoto 4 cannot be updated to iPhoto 5.
    (2) Pony up the $79 for iLife 05. You may want to wait until after Apple announces new products on January 10th.
    I hope the above helps.

  • IPhoto on Tiger

Hello, can anyone help? A friend of mine has bought a second hand mac from an art college - I think its a G4 and its running Tiger (4.11 i think). It obviously shipped with iLife as iMovie is there but iPhoto has been erased (there are signs it was there - there is a custom automator workflow involving it) - I'm guessing the college binned the application when they tried to remove student work. As my friend is trying to manage a photo library (nobody mention Aperture please!), iPhoto would be useful. I do not believe she has the startup disks that came with the computer (if she was given them, she's lost them now). Is there anything that can be done? - is it still possible to buy an older copy that will run on tiger?
    Cheers, Toria Pilar

iPhoto 08 is the latest version of iPhoto that will run on 10.4.11. You can try Amazon or Ebay for a copy of iLife 08 that contains it.

  • Tiger compatibility with iPhoto

I am about to update a G4 with iPhoto to Tiger. I am currently running 10.0 on the machine. Is there a danger of losing iPhoto when I install the new Tiger? I have backed up the photos themselves. Thanks.

    Hi macinyart,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Yes, you will lose all your applications and data, so make sure you have a complete backup! Reason: in order to upgrade from 10.0.x to 10.4.x you have to perform an Erase&Install. You will have to either reinstall your applications from the original disks or restore them from your backup after you upgraded.

  • IPhoto 2: suddenly won't open library...

...and nor will it make a new one.
G5, iPhoto 2, Tiger. iPhoto worked just fine yesterday. Today, Software Update reports two updates to d/l and install: Quicktime 7.1.2 and OS X Update 10.4.7. (nothing to do with iPhoto!) Downloaded and installed.
    Nothing else has been changed.
After the obligatory restart, iPhoto was launched to work on some pics. The app loads, then reports that 'you have made a change in the iPhoto library using a newer version. Please use a newer version to view the iPhoto library.' and a Quit button.
i searched through this forum, and there were some ideas:
    • rename the current Library, open iPhoto and create a new Library, quit and manually move the old Library into the new Library, then restart iPhoto
    • trash the plist from the user directory
    • rebuild Library
Tried each of them, then tried all of them. Nothing changes. If the Library is removed from the directory to the desktop and renamed, a new Library dialog did appear. But when the user is prompted to save the new Library, the same error comes up.
New Library folder trashed; plist trashed; iPhoto started again: same as above.
New Library folder trashed; plist trashed; Opt-Shft held as iPhoto opens: well, of course, it says no album is selected, then gives the original error and quits.
Opt-Shft held with old Library in the proper location: asks if a rebuild is desired, then gives the original error and quits.
At a total loss. We don't have iLife, because we don't want the rest of it. We just use iPhoto. Can't re-install iPhoto because it was part of the original restore discs -- well, okay, i could extract iPhoto from the package and reinstall just it, but i'd rather not because it's a bit of work.
What's a stumper is that nothing was done to iPhoto itself with this download. At this point in the troubleshooting, i usually tell the user that a clean reinstall from the original discs is needed.
Has anyone else seen this problem with iPhoto 2 after a Tiger update?
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   G5, 10.4.7, iPhoto 2

    A little clarification please...
As far as I can tell, the latest available Mac version of QuickTime is 7.1.1 (although that shouldn't have anything to do with the problem you've described).
It's a little puzzling that a newly created library would induce the "you have made a change..." dialog. While an existing library might have become modified by applying an inappropriate updater, there is no possible way for iPhoto to generate a new, incompatible library. To where did you try to save this new library? Did you just accept the default location (your Pictures folder) that was offered?
Restart your Mac and then run the Permissions Repair from Disk Utility. Try iPhoto again.
If that doesn't improve things, try creating a new library this way...
    • Quit iPhoto if it's running
    • Move your iPhoto Library (all of them, if you've rebuilt and kept the original) to the desktop
    • Move the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from your Preferences folder to the trash
    • Launch iPhoto and dismiss the "Welcome" dialog.
Try importing some pictures (but not from any of your previous iPhoto Library folders)
BTW, it's unlikely that your OS 10.4.7 update had anything to do with what's going on (other than a possible permissions issue) -- I just installed such an update, and iPhoto 2 works fine.

  • IPhoto Library Not Found after Upgrade to Leopard

I was running the newest iPhoto under Tiger and I just upgraded to Leopard. I tried to open iPhoto and a message said, "iPhoto library not found." It was there before I upgraded from Tiger. I mostly use Adobe Bridge so I didn't have much in iPhoto but I'm curious to see why the library disappeared and whether it can be restored. I looked all around on the hard disk and didn't see the iPhoto library anywhere. Thanks.

Yes, it must have been upgrade and install because I followed the defaults. The iPhoto library was in the Pictures folder in Tiger and I never moved it. After the upgrade to Leopard, it was gone--it is no longer in my Pictures folder, nor does it seem to be anywhere else. I didn't touch it--the upgrade made it disappear. Why did that happen? What can be done about it? Thanks very much.

  • Tiger & Camera RAW for Canon Rebel XT (350D)

I'm trying to find out WHEN Apple will update either iPhoto or Tiger (presumably the latter) so that it natively reads Camera RAW for the Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D).
I've looked on both Canon's and Apple's site with no luck other than to find what I already know (that it's not yet supported). Has anyone heard rumor as to when support for this format might be forthcoming?
I already have Adobe CS2, so I have RAW support. The reason I want iPhoto to support RAW is so I can use the slideshow and "book" features without having to process my RAW photos into JPEG first (I have enough space on my Powerbook's hard-drive used up by RAW's already - I don't want duplicate files).

Well, I can't make iPhoto support XT RAW, nor can I tell you when it will. I do, however, have a workaround - if you have PhotoShop (may also work in Elements).
Get Dr Brown's Image Processor (free photoshop script) here:
    http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html
This works with CS1 and is apparently built into the latest version of PS.
It gives you complete control over your RAW processing and then batch processes the files to JPEG (and/or TIFF and/or PSD). THe processed jpegs can then be imported into iPhoto. I have been doing it this way since long before iPhoto supported any type of RAW format.
iPhoto is great, and it is nice that they added RAW support. However, if you really want to shoot RAW on a regular basis, iPhoto is not the best choice to process your files. It does a good job, but a tool like PhotoShop (or the program that comes with your camera) provides a much higher level of control - which is supposed to be the point of shooting RAW. If you just want most of the settings to be "automatic" then you may as well shoot jpeg (which is actually a RAW file that the camera processes for you).
After doing that, you can save the RAW "originals" to CD/DVD/etc. to save space. If you really want to protect yourself, convert a set to DNG (Adobe's new digital negative format) and archive those as well. With all the different RAW formats floating around now, you never know what will be supported in the future. (Imagine trying to run iPhoto in "ClassicX mode" on your OS XXX system machine because none of the tools 25 years from now support the "ancient" Rebel XT RAW format!)

  • Iphoto 08 and photo collage

I have been reading on the net and did a google search and I understand that in the previous version of Iphoto (that predates Iphoto 08) you were able to make a photo collage under print&layouts?? Can you no longer do this in Iphoto 08? if not why? Is there a template add-on or something to do this? I think it would be pretty Stupid for apple to not include this feature in 08 any help would be great

Other applications that can create mosiacs or collages are:
MacOSaiX, MozoDojo, PhotoTiles, Posterino and OmniGraffle. I created this 20" x 30" 96 photo collage with OG.
Earlier there was an thumbnail poster plugin of sorts for iPhoto in Tiger by Jim Heid but I don't think that's available any more. However there's an Automator version of that, a 20 x 30" poster that's available from here at AutomatorWorld. It's a free Automator workflow.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Sequencing in iPhoto

I'm relatively new to Snow Leopard, and iPhoto 8 (8.1.1) and I don't see what I need in the other posts. I really miss the ability I had in iPhoto in Tiger to show all photos by sorting them on their titles, without the "events" category. The program appears to group photos by event as to when they were entered, and I scanned a lot of older photos in many batches, but the titles either define their actual date (taken) or a prefix I assigned to designate decade (back to 1880's). But I can't see how to get rid of the events classications which Apple attaches. If I cannot in iPhoto, is their another program available out their (reasonable cost) which will allow me to do what I want?
    Peter F.

I really miss the ability I had in iPhoto in Tiger to show all photos by sorting them on their titles, without the "events" category.
On the left hand column select 'Photos'.
Then View Menu -> Uncheck 'Event Titles' (if it's checked)
Then View menu -> Sort Photos -> By Title

  • Just bought macbook air; had macbook macbook with Tiger software. What is best way to upload photos to icloud on old computer without upgrading it's software? thanks.

just bought a macbook air upgrading from old macbook with Tiger software; what is best way to take photos from old backbook to icloud so I can see them or download on the new air; Have an external harddrive backup. photo library is too large to transfer directly.thanks.

Memory size has nothing to do with it. I can open my 60GB iPhoto library with only 8GB RAM. Perhaps you have an incompatible version of iPhoto under Tiger with iPhoto under ML.
As to downloading different photos from iCloud, you would do the same if you ...
    * open iPhoto under Tiger
    * dump the photos individually in to a folder on your external hard drive
    * shut down everything on the old MacBook
    * connect the external hard drive to new MacBook
    * open iPhoto on new MacBook
    * import the photos in the folder on the external hard drive directly in to the new iPhoto
IOW, you need not use iCloud (even if you could, which you cannot) to swap photos as you propose.
If you are at a loss for space on your external hard drive for whatever reason (perhaps that external hard drive is a full Time Machine partition), I recommend that you buy another external hard drive just for your photos.

  • IPhoto ´08 gets Stuck

    Hi there,
First entry here, so hello all!
Have my first Mac now since some Days. It came with Tiger, but i did the upgrade to Leopard 2 Days Ago. I have some Problems with iPhoto now. I can't tell if it came with the Upgrade to Leo, because i didn't use iPhoto on TIger.
    Here is the issue:
When zapping through the Photos of an Event, and turning some of them, it happens quite often that iPhoto gets stuck. The "busy-collourwheel" apears, and iPhoto doesn't react anymore. When checking the running Processes 2 Processes are marked as "does not react":
    - iPhoto
    - UserEventAgent
I did read in another Topic here in the Discussions, that lots of other users have it on UserEventAgent too.
Hovever it's really sad, that such a cool Software than iPhoto is gets pretty useless, when it gets stuck all the time.
    Maybe someone can help me?
    Here some further Details:
Untill now it allways happened, when I was turnig a Photo. I had it in big fiew, so the fiew you have, when doubleclicking on a photo of an Event (so not screenfilled).
2nd small issue: The eject knob of my wireless KB seems not to do it's job.. how can i set it up right?
Well i think the iMac rocks. And i think i will not want to go back on a win PC anymore. now just iPhoto has to work as well, and am totally happy :o)

    Britzel:
First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. See if that will help. Next, create a new temporary library, import a an event or two of photos and see if it will perform as intended. If it does, then your primary library is the culprit. In that case I'd get the paid version of iPhoto LIbrary manager and copy the events and albums from the problem library to the working one like this.
If the temp library doesn't work as intended log into another account and see if iPhoto will open and run there. If not then it's a system wide issue and maybe a reinstall of iPhoto would be warranted. If it does work OK in the other account then your primary account is suspect. In that case it could be a bad preference file other than iPhoto's. Here's how to check that out:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
5 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

  • No connection for Iphoto purchases - help

hello all...try to post in iphoto forum and got no answer..hoping someone might have some ideas. i can not access apple to buy books, cards, calendars, or anything from iphoto. i'm running latest on iphoto and tiger. when i have assembled a book and hit the "buy book" icon, nothing happens. have also tried to purchase a photo or anything (thinking maybe had a corrupted book) and absolutely nothing happens. the icon grays a little and nothing. i have ability to get on the internet, download, upload, etc., but nothing from iphoto. i also killed all prefs, caches, etc. that are associated wuth iphoto. any HELP would be APPRECIATED......

    Hi, applex2!
I'm not real familiar with iPhoto's inner-workings, but perhaps we can hone in on the issue a bit more...
Could your location be an issue?
    Extract from iPhoto Help:
Prints, Books, Calendars, and Cards: Available in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the U.S.

    If not, then...
If you click on the "Book" icon at the bottom of the iPhoto window, then click on the "Options & prices..." button, does it properly link to Apple's iPhoto books page? (This should be a link which is not directly associated with your Apple account, so it should work.)
Have you tried Repair Permissions using Disk Utility?
If you create a new user account and try again from there, does it then work properly?
