Iphoto is cropping my photos when I am creating a book

how can I keep my photos from being cropped when I try to create a book

Eithershoot them in 4:3 or  crop them to 4:3 - the ratio the iPhoto frames are in - or after placing them right click and choose fit to frame

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

  • BUG! iphoto stalls when trying to create a book and no event is selected

however, works fine when trying to create a book and an event or an album is selected... obviously a bug.

Solution - do not do that
and report to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
But it is likely that updates for '09 are over since it is a couple of years old and '11 is out

  • IPhoto auto cropping my photos???

    Hi guys,
The problem I'm having is iPhoto is taking my pictures and they're being cropped into faces. i'm not in the faces tab or nothing but lets say i have a group photo, iphoto would take that photo and split it up into 5, or 6 different photos based on each persons face. and all i would see is their face. kind of like if you did them in faces, but im not in faces and when i go to show file, it would say, party01_face1.jpg.
any ideas or help would be appreciated. thank you.

    party01_face1.jpg.
It appears that you are using the Finder to view photos inside the iPhoto library. That image file you saw was a faces file that is created by iPhoto when you select a face. If you were using the *Search For ➙ Photos* feature in the Finder you'll see many of those files, originals, modified and faces that iPhoto creates and uses. *You don't want to use that feature to access photos in your library*.
The following is from one of Terence Devlin’s posts on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It’s the definitive treatise on the subject.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the iPhoto Library Folder directly has never been supported in any version of iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For Users of 10.5 and later
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
For users of 10.4 and later ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: faster and b: Safer than rooting around in the old Library Folder.

  • IPhoto duplicates (doubles) all photos when importing

    Hi
    iMac 27 2009/10
    OSX 10.8.5
    iPhoto 11 9.4.3
When importing from an iPhone (and i think a digital camera) iPhoto imports say 10 photos but it puts 20 into iPhoto - i.e. it duplicates every photo it imports
It never used to do this and i can't see anywhere in preferences where there is a setting to import photos and double them up ?
When we import some 100 photos and we get 200 into iPhoto its a real pain to have to go through them and delete the duplicates

If you're shooting HDR photos with your iPhone and don't want double imports turn off the Keep Normal Photo under Settings ➙ Photos & Camera on your iPhone:
Frankly, I'd keep the normal photo. It might be far better than the HDR version, if the camera was not perfectly stabilised or the target moved. Usually it requires the large screen on the Mac to be able to compare the normal photo to the HDR version, to be able to see, if the HDR version is passable.

  • Why does iphoto not copy all photos when transfering

    Hi peeps.
why does iPhoto not copy all photos from an event when im copy/pasting to an external folder on my mac(for later transfer). All softwares are up to date and ive only just realised it happens, but when i copy all pics in an event then paste in a folder, the pic count is substantially different. for example i select all pictures in an event called 'new1', the count of files is 188. i then copy/ paste to a folder,  select all files and check 'info' and it says 141 files???
all i can see painstakingly going through to compare which images are in each place is that the ones that arent in my new folder , seem to be the ones ive edited in iPhoto??  conincidence? or am I missing something fundamental here?  Ive only just realised this is occuring. The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.  So basically all of the versions of pictures I want, i.e, the new edited and adjusted versions are no longer! NOT HANDY!
      help please.

We've seen a few reports of this in the past while and no one is sure of the cause.
Use the File -> Export command. See this User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
for details of the options the Export Dialogue offers.
If you're interested in your Photos then this workflow
The trouble is, after moving images to folders/hard drives I  subsequently delete them from iphoto to keep my macbook airs HDD with some space.
means you are losing quality, metadata and the version of control. If you don't want these why use iPhoto at all?
You could just move the whole Library to an external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • HT201238 How to transition a 1.5TB iPhoto Library to iCloud Photos when the limit is only 1TB?

My iPhoto library is over 1.5TB.  Since iCloud Photos has a limit of 1TB, what is the best way for me to transition my iPhoto library to iCloud Photos?

There is a contact us link at the bottom of every page of these forums - if you have Apple Care you can call them - you ask at an Apple Store
But again until the product is released no one knows and Apple does not speculate on unreleased products
If the released product has a limit smaller than your library then you will have to make multiple libraries or only put selected photos on iCloud
And that is a giant library - I have over 70,0 with over half 16 MP RAW images and my library is only 389 GB - are you looking at the size of the phtos in iPhoto or the size of the disk file which is much large since it includes multiple versions, database files and other items?

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 crashes when attempt to create book

    Hi,
I've been having this problem with iPhoto and Aperture.
For iPhoto 9.2.1 I try to create a book from an album but when I select any style, the app will crash and I can't do anything. I read about this dpi business but what does that mean and how do I do that?
Aperture doesn't have a status percentage when I try to upload a book for order. I've left it overnight and still nothing.
    How frustrating!

That's a hang rather than a crash and can be caused by difficulty accessing the photos on the Card. Have you tried another card? Or tried reformatting the card with the camera?

  • IPhotos has lost my Photos when upgrading to Yosemite

When I upgraded to Yosemite like many people I have seen on forums there was a issue with upgrading the iPhoto library when upgrading to 9.6.  Finally it looked like it had worked but now all of my photos do not appear in iPhoto.  The files seem to be there still as the iPhoto library file is still1.26TB in size (i have a lot of photos).  I have tried doing a full rebuild of the Library but it did nothing.  I also purchased iPhoto Library Manager but this does not help either.  Please can anyone help?
I am using iPhoto 9.6, OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) on a iMac (27-inch, Late 2013).  The Library is stored on a "My Book Thunderbolt Duo", 8TB in raid 1 configuration.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Transfer photos from iPhoto (iOS) to iPhoto Mac, keeping original photo when edited?

I've been on a vacation and used iPhoto on my iPad Mini to save and edit a few pics on the go. I want to transfer these photos to my Mac (iPhoto), but I also wan to keep the original photo for the edited ones. This is very easy for iOS devices as you can transfer them wirelessly between the devices, but I haven't found a similar way between my iOS device and the Mac. I can transfer the pictures either via iTunes or the camera roll, but both these ways only transfers the edited picture, not the original. Any one knows?

Use iOS 6.0.1 on your device and a computer running Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.x) and the latest version of iPhoto.
With iCloud and PhotoStream turned on, photos shared to the Camera Roll or taken with the device are copied to your PhotoStream. When you start iPhoto on your Mac you'll see a PhotoStream selection in the left column your Camera Roll Photos will be there. Copy them to the albums you want to store them in or export them to other folders on your computer for back up.

  • IPhoto not finding all photos when importing

I'm trying to import 14,499 photos. The problems is when I drag it over or click file import it only imports about 12,200. What happened to the other 2,299? I clicked yes to import duplicate photos. I plan on running duplicate annihilator once all of the photos are in. I can't tell which folder or photos it's not importing. The pictures are in 50 folder, and several have sub folder. I have tried running it on the laptop hard drive, and a external hard drive with 2 different libraries and still same problem.

  • How can I automatically include photo descriptions when creating a book through iPhoto so that I don't have to type them all again?

I am scanning hundreds of old photographs onto my iMac and including descriptions when I import them to iPhoto.  When I have created a book as a test, the photo descriptions are not automatically included.  I don't want to have to add captions to the book I've created so how do I automaticaly include each description with the photograph?

There are no themes that automatically add descriptions that have been added to the photos. The Folio theme will pickup the file name and user name of the account
    but not the description.

  • Is there a way to eliminate black margins from a cropped digital photo

I often crop my photos when editing.  However, if I remove a large portion of the photo and view them in iPhoto, there are usually large black margins.  Is there a way to hide or eliminate these borders?

I am embarrassed to say I tried to find one and couldn't.  The only explanation I can think of is that I recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 and perhaps that made a difference.
Thank you so much for trying to help.  If and when it ever occurs again, I'll note the specifics.

  • Photo's disappear from select panel when creating a book (version 7.1.1.)

    Hi,
If I sort all photo's on date, and look in my photo library, I do not get the same photo's when I switch to the project panel to create a book. The photo-select window above the book lay-out window, only shows a part (all be it a large part) of my complete photo library. Does anyone know how to 'force' iPhoto to show all photo's form the Library in the photo select window?
    Thanks!
    Paul Harts

The photos in the thumbnails across the top when you are creating a book are ONLY the ones you have placed there - either by having them selected when you created the book project or by dragging them to the book project. The only way to "force" iPhoto to display all of your library is to select all of your library and drag it to the book project - which I personally would find impossible to work with
