IPhoto is destructive when editing photos

Hi,
I recently discovered that when you use the editing tools with iPhoto and export / share them, they are destructively shrinked to 3MP (2048x1536).
I don't see this documented anywhere. It's a HUGE problem not telling the users that all the pictures are destroyed.
I just tested with a full size picture from iPhone 4S 8MP.
1. Take picture on iPhone 4S
2. Sync between devices via photostream @ full resolution on the PC and "optimized size" on the iPad.
3. Open and Edit on the iPad
4. Save and Share
Boom, now the picture is 3MP instead of 8MP in the photostream.
I would expect iPhoto to get the full resolution photo and edit it, instead of shrinking it.
I can understand that the pictures showed on the iPad are optimized for performance reason, but not that the iPhoto App save the optimized one instead of the full resolution one just like Apps like Camera+ and I think all other serious Apps.
This is totally wrong. I know discovered that I lost original pictures because of this *undocumented & not user friendly* behavior by deleting "duplicate" (original) pictures...
Not the first time that I can't trust Apple stuff. Last time, iCloud syncing with Keynote on iOS destroyed all my presentations but the opened one. I lost everything...

But the problem rely in the photo stream. Because when you save the modifier picture in the camera roll, it's still shrinked. Even with photoforge2, you can't get the full resolution version from the photostream.
The Photo stream is documented here:
iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
See the paragraph:
What resolution are My Photo Stream photos?
On your Mac or PC, your photos are downloaded and stored in full resolution. On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV, your Photo Stream photos are delivered in a device-optimized resolution that speeds downloads and saves storage space. While actual dimensions will vary, an optimized version of a photo taken by a standard point-and-shoot camera will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution when pushed to your devices. Panoramic photos can be up to 50 pixels wide.
So you can't get full resolution using Photo Stream to send photos to an IOS device, but from an IOS device to a computer the resolution stays the same.
It is editing in iPhoto that creates smaller versions, but the originals are not destroyed. You can send your originals back - full resolution - by sharing them to iTunes.

  • Is ILife 11 the current version today? Will its purchase upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11? I have a Macbook, Maverick and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.  I understand ILife is the way to fix it.

Is ILife 11 the current version today? (May  2014).  ILife 11 on Amazon appears to be 3+ yrs old?
When searching for ILife 11 on the Apple Store, I am directed to a separate purchase of Iphoto version 9.
Somewhat confusing, Apple is always so clear with these things.
The goal is to upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11.
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
I understand ILife is the way to fix it.
    Thanks!

The current version of iPhoto is iPhoto 9.5.1., and it is the latest version of iPhoto '11.
If you are running Mavericks 10.9.2, you can buy iPhoto 9.5.1 from the AppStore - it is the currently sold version.
The iLife bundle is called iLife '11, and the iPhot version in iLife '11 is iPhoto 9.x.x. - that is confusing allright
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
While it is certainly useful to upgrade to the current iPhoto version to be fully compatible with MacOs X 10.9.2, there may be a differnet reason for the crashes. Is there an error message with the crashes? When did these start? Did you import new photos or videos? Install other software?

  • I have a new MacBook Pro with iPhoto installed.  I edit photos, mainly photo orientation via rotating, but when I go back to run a slideshow the changes weren't saved and the photo is back to vertical...please help...thanks

I have a new MacBook Pro with Iphoto installed when purchased.  When editing a photo, primarily orientation changes, the slideshow initially displays the photos in proper orientation.  However, after leaving Iphoto and shutting down the computer, and then going back to run a slideshow the photo displays back to its' original orientation, that is, the edit-change was not saved.  Please help...the program information says all edit-changes are automatically save and therefore there is no save command, but my changes are not being saved...thank you for any suggestions...HM

  • Disable facebook update when editing photos

    hi,
Is there a way to disable automatic updates of photos which are part of a facebook album?
The thing is, when I edit photographs to be used for other purposes, I find it automatically updates the image contained in the FB album as well (well, the facebook album within iPhoto seems to only contain links to the actual images in iPhoto) . Whilst I can see that that would make sense occasionally, and it sometimes is quite nice to get friends' comments on year old photographs, by and large I find it rather annoying. Duplicating images would be an option, but then I'd quite like to keep duplicates to a minimum.
Is there a way to control the trigger-happy interaction between Fb and iPhoto a bit more?

In preferences you can set web syncing to manual
But when you sync all edited photos will be synced

  • IPhoto 6 Hangs When "Recovered Photos" Are Opened

iPhoto 6 "recovered" 300+ photos when I updated from iPhoto 5. I can still see the recovered photos in both my library and albums, but if I double-click on the photos, iPhoto 6 hangs with a spinning ball icon requiring a Force Quit to recover. I can open the photos in the "Recovered Photos" album, but I'm not sure how to get them back into my library and other albums. Has anyone been able to do this?
    Thanks, Will
    G5, 2 GHz, Dual Processors   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

When upgrading to iPhoto 6, the 'recovered photos' it finds are stored as follows:
a if you opt to import the photos when iPhoto asks, they are left where iPhoto found them (or lost them, depending on how you view it...) in the 'year' folder system, within the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder; e.g. 2005>12>15>photo.jpg, 2003>10>05>photo2.jpg etc. Within iPhoto itself the photos are grouped in one new roll, and an album is created in the Source list called "Recovered Photos".
b if you opt not to import the photos, they are moved from the 'year' folder system in the Finder into one folder within the iPhoto Library folder, entitled "Recovered Photos". The 'year' folders can be deleted, if they are still there - you should find that they are empty and they are not used by iPhoto 6.
In Case b you can move the "Recovered Photos" folder to anywhere you like, e.g the Desktop, as the photos are no longer associated with iPhoto. In fact, if you decide you need to import some or all of the photos back into iPhoto, you will have to move the RP folder to another location as iPhoto will disallow any import from within the iPhoto Library folder.
Take care either way; in my case I had 1014 recovered photos, which included all of the following:
a originals of some of my photos, the edited versions were still in iPhoto
b random duplicates of original photos
c photos, both original and edited versions, which I had deleted long ago - sometimes as long as 2-3 years, many versions of iPhoto ago!
When I have chance soon I intend to document my own personal recovery procedure / experience, in case it helps anyone else when upgrading. In the meantime, feel free to ask if you have any questions...

  • IPhoto 9 - Can't Edit photos. Only get black screen

Recently I went to edit some photos I have in iPhoto 9.  When I click on a thumbnail to edit, I get nothing but black.  When I show file, the jpg is there and it opens fine in preview. I tried the iPhoto Library Manager. Made a new library and then tried importing the photos from the existing library into the new one.  It said they were "Unreadable Files" Even though they are all jpgs.
Any ideas? I've rebuilt, etc with CNTRL OPTION.
Is this possibly because of software update to LION? I'm running 10.7.5 and have the latest updates.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto 9 duplicates when editing

After editing with PS Elements, a duplicate is generated in Events/Photos.  Is this an Adobe problem, or iPhoto problem?  Also, if you delete the original are there consequences when you attempt to "Consolidate Masters" in Aperture?
    Thanks for your response.

Are you talking about iPhoto '09 (version 8.x.x) - it does not duplicate photos sent to an external editor
Or are you talking about iPhoto '11 (version 9.x.x) - iPhoto '11 does duplicate the photos when they are sent to an external editor - report this bug to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
You can delete the original in iPhoto using iPhoto - NEVER make any changes of any kind to the iPhoto library using the finder
I have no idea what that would do to Aperture - the Aperture forum would be a better place to discuss it

  • Using De-noise when editing photos

Every time i use de-noise when edit a photo , it shows the effect but when i click DONE it cames back to what it were , all others effects works after DONE except this one.
Is there something that i don't know about make it work after DONE ???
    Milton Taylor

Forgive me if I'm just missing the boat here (Always possible, my pilots license expired about 8 years ago.). When I do a de-noise or sharpness change I do indeed see the changes. However, I have to view the image at "Actual Size" to see it as indicated in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23135
When editing (doing De-noise or sharpness adjustments for example) you set your zoom to 100% (aka Actual size of the image) by tapping the #1 on the keyboard. Observe the changes. Click done to save them.
Then drag the image out of iPhoto to the desktop. Open the image up with Preview and then go to View > Actual Size (aka 100%). This shows the image in it's full size. Take a look and see if the changes are still there. You can even open up iPhoto in it's 100% edit mode and Preview at the same time to compare them. They should be identical (again they are for me). For me they match.
If that is not your experience, I would be curious what happens if you take one of your images out of this library, add it to a new library and try editing using that article as a guide.
If the issue STILL happens, did it work before and stop working recently? If so, do you know when (like right after an install of an update or other software, etc.)
    Cheers.

  • IPhoto 6.0.1: editing photos

I have just installed iPhoto 6 and upgraded to 6.0.1.
I am unable to edit photos with this product. Can anyone say why?
I have installed and re-installed; adjusted privileges on my iPhoto libraries; repaired permissions; tried to rebuild the data base and generally followed the lines of advice offered in these pages.
This product does not seem to work as advertised - at least in my hands.

In addition to Dave's suggestion there's another method that has worked for others. It's discussed in this thread:

  • Can't create pdf. from word doc when edited photos are included

Or for that matter, from any photo which has been imported from my camera through lightroon, which happens everytime I  download shots to my harddrive. I create .pdf tutorials which include process shots and text; whnever I include shots which have come through lightroom, I get an error message telling me that the flies in question are in use with another application. There must be a workaround for this, right? Why can't an edited photo be included into a word doc and then converted to a pdf?

You must have a program open with the image file or you would not get this message.
I just did a test run. It works perfectly with my images. I tried it with a JPG and I tried it with a TIFF.
Word imported them into the document and exported the document to PDF.
The TIFFs  were created in Lr by exporting, and they are in the Lr catalog. So Lr is not the culprit for you rproblem.
What I sometimes forget when I edit / change a Word document is that a PDF already created has to be closed. When I don't like my PDF and just go back to Word, do some changes and export again to the same PDF, i.e. overwriting the existing PDF, then the PDF cannot be created. The PDF that needs changing must be closed before another export can happen.
