IPhoto is Downgrading Photo Resolution

I attempted to follow a link to a branched discussion but was not "authorized" to do so.
iPhoto has significantly downgraded the resolution of photos I'm storing in it.  I have thousands of 12mp images that now are no larger than 1280x960 (and no, not the thumbnails, the opened pics with the info pane open next to them).
I read in earlier posts something about the originals being stored somewhere else on my hard drive, but have not been able to locate them.
Does anyone have any idea where I might find them or if there is another reason this is happening?
All help is appreciated!

If rebuilding with iPhoto doesn't seem to fix the problem try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the original files in this library show the full pixel dimensions and so so for some time then you can continue using this rebuilt library and trash your current library.

  • IPhoto 4 downgraded photos

IPhoto 4 copied my library during install and now I have THOUSANDS of extra duplicates (iPhoto shows 6,341 photos...I don't have near that.)
    1) Some are at a much lower resolution (240x180).
    2) I have duplicates that took the original title and altered it in my library: ex.
    SIMG0749.JPG
    SIMG0749.jpg
    SIMG0749_1
This is ANOTHER example of Apple not living up to its claim of making my life easier. I "swithced" because of "promises" implied by my Machead friends. Well, I'm frustrated.
So what do I do Mac people? Is there a "Widget" that will fix all this and analyze my "duplicates?"
Please make me a "believer," or give me a number to a "Support Group" for PC People . . . or PC's Anonymus or something.

    Don't blame iPhoto.
Here is what I think you did. You installed iPhoto 4 and it opened with a brand new empty library. You then imported or dragged the entire original iPhoto Library Folder into iPhoto 4.
The Iphoto Library Folder is the database and includes all the photos, copies and thumbnails iPhoto uses.
This is not the way to do it.
What you want to do is have iPhoto 4 update your original Library.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Go to you Pictures Folder and drag that entire new iPhoto Library Folder with all the dups to the desktop or rename it "NEW iPhoto Library".
    3. Your original iPhoto Library Folder should still be in your Pictures Folder.
    4. Relaunch iPhoto. It will ask to create a new library or locate an existing one. Choose locate and select the original.
    5. iPhoto will then be able to update that original to iPhoto 4.
When this works you can delete the library folder with all the dups
    But please read this:
    Don't tamper
You could have also found the correct procedure in the iPhoto Help menu.

  • Photo resolution on iweb

Does anyone know how to improve the photo resolution on iweb? Can i upload pics from iphoto to iweb with original file size?

Does anyone know how to improve the photo resolution
on iweb? Can i upload pics from iphoto to iweb with
    original file size?
Yes, you can. Not sure why you would want to do this. Web images tend to have to balance image quality with download speed. But sure, you can have your original photo used in iWeb. Just drag it from iPhoto directly into iWeb. Then open up the Inspector and click on the Rulers tab. The click "Use original size". That will be your original photo.
If you make any other changes to your photo like shrinking it down to a little square or rotating it or putting a frame around it, then iWeb will convert your photo to a PNG file and subsequently recompress the image for the PNG file. That will again lower your resolution.

How have you tried to do that?
You don't have to import iPhoto to Photos, you have to open she iPhoto Libray in Photos.
Either drag the iPhoto Library (not the application) onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
Or launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key to select your iPhoto Library for migration.
Where i your iPhoto library stored? On an external drive or your system drive?

  • Photo resolution on new computer

I have noticed that the photo resolution on my new system is much smaller than on my old G4 iBook. The original size of the photos was in 1-2 meg size with great resolution. Now they are 40-50K. When I export them to a digital photo frame they are really poor. What have I done wrong?

    Yes
Quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library to the desktop (after completing everything successfully you will delete this library) and connect the two computers (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library form the pictures folder form the old machine to the same place in the new machine (a single drag - do not move pieces of the library) and launch iPhoto on the new machine - you should be fine - and once you are trash the bad iPhoto library from the desktop

  • IDVD slideshow photo resolution

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
From previous posts, it seems that iDVD photo resolution is always less than viewing a iPhoto slideshow while in that application.
    So here is my question:
When I use the option of sharing the photos, iDVD creates a "slideshow" folder with the photos in .JPG,on the DVD. If I copy the folder to my desktop, open, then the resolution is great when viewing on my G5. So if the iDVD app and my verbatim media can create/support these images, why is the iDVD slideshow resolution so poopy?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

OK, but why so lousy even when viewing the DVD using
    my G5?
An NTSC TV set has less than 640x480 pixel
    resolution
    - you computer monitor has more than 4 times this
    resolution.
You are looking at an image with less than 640x480 pixel quality displayed on a much larger pixel count monitor.
Sorry, but what you see is what you get.
DVDs produced by iDVD are best viewed on a TV set. If you are viewing them on a computer - DO NOT set the playback display to 'Full Screen' - use 'Normal' size (which will display the video in a 640x480 window).

  • From iPhoto. I simply took a PDF and saved it to iPhoto as a photo and then sent it as an embedded "photo" that was my document. Since changing to Lion, I cannot do it this way. Help!

I used to send embedded documents rather than as an attachmentfrom iPhoto. I simply took a PDF and saved it to iPhoto as a photo and then sent it as an embedded "photo" that was my document. Since changing to Lion, I cannot do it this way. Help!

I found the solution on another post by user rbii:
You can add this using Automator:
    - Run automator, select File->New, chose Print Plugin
    - From the PDFs part of the library drag "Render PDF Pages as Images" to the workflow on the right, set resolution to 200.
    - From the Photos part of the library drag "Import Files into iPhoto" to the workflow section.
    - Save the workflow
That should get you back this feature."
Save the workflow as "Save PDF to iPhoto" and you'll get that option back on the list. Hope this helps!

  • When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder, what happens if I delete the photo in Iphoto ? Will the original file in the folder be deleted too?

When using Iphoto to import photo from existing folder to iphoto, what happens if:
    1. I delete that photo in iphoto? will the original file in the folder be deleted too ?
    2.  when importing, does the hard disk store 2 versions of the photo, hence occupying additional space in the harddisk?

1 - no  --  iPhoto only manages fiel within the iPhoto library - it does not ever do anything with files outside the library
2 - No idea what you are asking - by default (and strongly recommended) iPhoto copies the original to the iPhoto library and you delete the source file outside the iPhoto library - iPhoto alwasy has at least two versions of every photo and some times three - it always have the original, a thumbnail and once a photo is modified a preview - this is not optional - if it is not what you want then iPhoto is not the correct progrtam to be using for phopto management

After upgrading to Yosemite (I don't have iPhoto anymore, only PHOTOS) my pictures will not import from my iPad or iPhone 5s or any picture from web, it shows "Database Error: failured to persist version".  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Sorry,
Yes, the error message is exactly like that  ("Database error: failured to persist version")
No photos will import at all.  I use USB to import from iPhone 5s or iPad 2.
About the difference?  iPhoto and Photos .  Are there two softwares?
I also will like to merge and/or synchronize all my photos I had saved to iCloud backups, Macbook Pro,  iPhone 5s and iPad hard drives using iPhoto.  It's call iPhoto library.  At one point I turned off streaming.
    Thanks again Larry HN.

I am having a problem when I try to select a photo or itunes song in Imovie or other programs. I get a window with grey lettering that says: "Open Itunes to populate this list" or "Open iphoto to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list.  I have tried relaunching programs and nothing appears. Seemed to start happening a while back after one of my system upgrades.

After a a lengthy conversation with Apple Tech. ($20), my problem seems to be solves. The Iphoto problem solved by trashing the plist file. The Itunes was more involved. We had to create a new Itunes folder and import the files into the new folder; and then import the playlists.

  • IPhone no longer shows in iPhoto to import photos after 9.2 and iOS 5 updates

For some reason my iPhone 4S doesn't show in iPhoto to import photos.  Oddly, iPhoto will launch when I plug into sync, but the phone does not show.  Also, the phone doesn't show in the Image Capture application.

Same problem but I noticed that plugging my iphone or ipad in will launch iphoto and the device will show up on the left and new photos from the device will display.  However, the devices don't show up on the left if iphoto is already running when when I plug them in.  It's an easy workaround to turn iphoto off before plugging the device in but it's not the way it was before upgrading to IOS5 and 9.2.

Is there a way I can stop
    this ?
No, Photo Stream is syncing with iCloud. The most recent 1000 photos in iCloud will be buffered on your mac, even if you do not import them to your photo library, if you enable My Photo Stream.
See this link:   iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.

When you launch iPhoto with the option key depressed you'll get this window:
All libraries on your hard drive (and on external drives) will be listed and the currently used library will be listed as (default).
