IPhoto is incredibly slow

iPhoto 11 (upgrade) is incredibly slow. Any ideas why?

It took me from Friday afternoon until Monday morning to narrow this down, but here's what it was on my system, which has 6,300+ photos and a library size of 17+ GB:
It wasn't the number of photos, or the size of the library, or Faces, or Spotlight, or anything "normal" that was causing my machine to virtually lock up about a minute after launching iPhoto '11 (9.1.3). Activity Monitor showed almost no CPU activity, and little to no disk or network activity.
What was causing the slow-down was something in the Accounts preference within iPhoto. I had about half a dozen e-mail accounts, Facebook, Flickr, and MobileMe listed as accounts. Once I deleted them, iPhoto sprang back to life.
I have since discovered that iPhoto will continue to wait for services in your Accounts preferences to come on-line indefinitely ... with no warning or notice that it is doing so. While it is waiting, it for some reason kills the performance of your entire system, so whatever other applications you have running (including Finder and Dock) will be extremely unresponsive.

  • IPhoto Editing Incredibly Slow

I've been using iPhoto for a while now, and have been taking lots of pictures, my library getting so big I had to move it to an external drive.
The more I edit, mostly just using Enhance and Crop, the slower it gets. Now, even outside of the editing, just when previewing (with spacebar), I can barely move from one photo to the next without getting a pinwheel for a while, and even having to restart iPhoto a couple of times.
I've tried rebuilding all of the thumbnails and cache etc, but am looking for other ideas to speed up my experience.
    Thanks for your help!
    Jake

How much free space do you have on your boot drive? It's advised to have a minimum of 10 GB of free space for optimal performance.
Some things you can do to speed up iPhoto:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.
The key option here is the last one. But do all three.
2 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto and reset the preferences as described below.
3 - in iPhoto's General preferences turn off "Show item counts"
4 - in iPhoto's Appearance preferences do not check Outline or Drop Shadow
5 - in iPhoto's Sharing preferences uncheck all options.
6 - in iPhoto's Web preferences set "Check for new published photos" to Manually.

  • IPhoto incredibly slow now

Ever since installing Mavericks and the new iPhoto, iPhoto has become amazingly slow. It takes much longer to load photos. I keep the trash emptied before quiting each time. And, why is it slower? Is there anything else I can do to speed it back up?

I've recently installed Snow Leopard & have yet to see any great differences or benefits.
The big problem I am having is that iPhoto is incredibly slow now in panning zoomed images.
e.g. I open an image in full screen and zoom in (which is slower than previously) and then use the multitouch function on the touchpad to pan... And I am presented with lag which appears to be buffered - i.e. I move my fingers in a certain pattern and then remove them & the software gradually follows this path with a lengthy delay.
    Any ideas or help?
I know what you mean. Ever since I purchased Snow Leopard, my Mac has been acting un-Mac like. iPhoto hangs during simple operations. I've had to do a forced shut down. This is getting a little irritating, I hope they resolve these issues soon.

  • IPhoto incredibly slow, stalls whole computer

I am having major problems with iPhoto. I am trying to organize and clean up my library, but I spend hours waiting for iPhoto to open, photos to load or delete, and for iPhoto to shut down. Every process is incredibly slow and I basically can't work with the program at all, as the computer stalls for up to an hour.
I have 15,000 photos in my library, but still sufficient space on my hard drive. According to iPhoto help, the program should be able to handle about 25,000 photos. My computer (Mac OSX Powerbook G4 with Tiger) is about 3 years old now and I don't know if it's a computer issue or an iPhoto issue. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I am slowly deleting some photos from the library but in the coming years I expect to build my photo colloection. Is it a quantity issue? Do the latest versions of iPhoto address this? I have read of other people having slow iPhotos even with far fewer photos.

This might have something to do with MobileMe trying to connect when iPhoto starts. If so it would be useful to be able to disable this "feature"!
Yes, turn it off. It’s in the Preferences - MobileMe -> Check for new Photos: set it to Manually.
While you’re at it, make sure that ‘Search for Shared Libraries’ is disabled in Sharing too.

  • Importing photos from my iPhone is incredibly slow or not working anymore

After upgrading from iPhoto to Photos, I can't import photos from my iPhone anymore after connecting it to my 5K iMac.
When I do connect my iPhone to my iMac, it takes over a minute or two for just the "Import" button to appear next to the global Photos/Shared/Albums/Projects navigation.
The next problem is that my thumbnails are loading incredibly slow, with just the thumbnail placeholder graphics appearing at a glacial pace without the actual thumb of the photo in question.
These issues are terribly annoying and killing the excitement of the long overdue and great upgrade.
Many thanks in advance to whoever can help me resolve these issues.
    SavJag

Ok, this is incredible, but within 5 minutes of posting this problem, and after 6 to 8 views (hopefully by Apple Tech Support), these issues seem to be fixed.
I just tried Photos again (my iPhone was already connected to my iMac) and boom, the Import button was already there in the global nav.
The thumbnail gallery of my already imported and new items showed up immediately.
When I hit "Import", my new items started importing immediately and turning up under the Photos section.
Apple Support Community / Tech Support, a big thank you to whoever fixed this. Hugely appreciated.

  • Navigating fully zoomed incredibly slow

    Evening all,
I have a small issue with iPhoto - if I zoom full-size to an image (uneditted or anything) and I try to pan with the trackpad, iPhoto responds painstakingly slow.
This is really annoying, and shouldn't be - I did a little test, I published one of my pictures on Flickr and viewed the same picture full-size in firefox - navigating was incredibly easy and very smooth, so it is clearly no a hardware problem.
I'm updated to the last version of both iPhoto and OS X, and I only bought my macbook a few weeks ago, so the library isn't clogged yet. There's also plenty of space on the HD, and even when only iPhoto is running the problem persists. The picture I'm looking at come out of a Nikon D40, so are only 6MP large (2k x 3k pixels), so that shouldn't be an issue for the machine.
Is this an isolated problem, or are there more people?
It seems to work better in preview mode (so not full-screen), but it's still not as responsive as it is in a browser window.

I know it's quicker like that, but I still like to pan around using my touchpad...
Besides, this just HAS to work, it't a bit ridiculous that my 4-yr old laptop with half the memory and even less processing power can do this without any problems.
After some more reading online it seems that more people have these problems, I'll go to the apple store in town tomorrow and 'inquire' there... I'd be interested to see if all macbooks are affected, even the ones with more memory and a better processor.
I hope there'll be an update soon, otherwise I'll have to get some different workflow software and bin iphoto.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks

I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

    CleanMyMac is probably your problem.
    CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • My 8620 HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer IS INCREDIBLY SLOW TO PRINT - TRIED EVERYTHING

I have an 8620 HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer It is connected via wireless set-up, with excellent signal strength. It is incredibly slow to print anything, especially PDF files that have graphics in them. I have the latest software installed, latest firmware updates. I have even uninstalled and re-installed, the issue is still there. This is an incredibly crap product, so I'd like to get this issue solved ASAP. Thanks,Brian

For example: printing http://www.nytimes.com/images/2015/07/04/nytfrontpage/scan.pdf Quickly goes 7.03mb/of 7.03mb... then just swirls the "printing" status on the printer's LCD screen, and takes 5 minutes to print...

  • Incredibly slow MacBook, Internal Hard Drive issues...

Good morning everybody! I'm apologize if this post is extremely wordy...
I am extremely baffled by a particular issue with a MacBook 2.0GHz C2D which belongs to a friend of mine. The warranty is expired.
    _Brief history:_
Several months ago, this MacBook could not find a bootable volume. The drive would not mount when booting from an external FireWire hard drive. It would not mount when the MacBook was put in Target Disk Mode and connected to another Mac. When booting from an external USB hard drive or with my MacBook Pro connected to the MacBook via Target Disk Mode, the MacBook booted up quickly. I came to the conclusion that the internal hard drive must have failed and needed to be replaced. Ultimately, the data was not recoverable from this drive.
I then proceeded to swap out the defective Apple OEM Seagate hard drive with a known working Apple OEM Fujitsu hard drive. When booting from the Leopard Install DVD, the MacBook would boot incredibly slow, but would finally reach the Installer Language screen. When proceeding to install Leopard, the drive would take a very long time to have data written to it, and ultimately the install failed. I removed the new hard drive from the MacBook and placed it in an external USB enclosure, attached it to the MacBook and booted from the Leopard Install DVD. Leopard would install successfully. I removed the hard drive from the enclosure and reinstalled it the MacBook. When booting from the freshly installed OS, the MacBook would take a very long time to boot. The MacBook is extremely slow!!!
I checked the Activity Monitor to ensure CPU & System Memory Usage was not going crazy. All Processes where normal with adequate CPU & Memory headroom.
I took the MacBook apart thinking that the SATA Controller Cable might be loose. No, it was firmly in place. I reassembled the MacBook and booted it up again. Still incredibly slow!
Finally, after several reboot attempts, the MacBook would book up quickly and operation was perfect. I applied all updates and continued testing the MacBook with great success. Gave my friend his MacBook back and he was grateful.
    _Now for the kicker..._
My friend brought me his MacBook a week ago complaining that the MacBook was operating extremely slow (much like when I was initially testing it before). I verified the MacBook was slow when I tried using it. I tried several reboots and then it would get stuck on the gray Apple with spinning gear.
I tried booting into Single User Mode, but it gets stuck on "Waiting for root device"
I put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and connected it to my G5 2.0GHz Dual Core. The hard drive would mount quickly on the G5 and I used Disk Utility to create a Restore Image. The disk operation would perform normally and the image would be created successfully.
I then partitioned the MacBook's hard drive when connected to the G5, ejected and proceeded to attempt OS reinstall. No dice! The hard drive is not even detected by the Disk Utility on the Leopard Install DVD.
Finally after several reattempts, the hard drive is recognized, but is extremely slow when trying to reinstall...and again, ultimately install fails. Using Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD, the hard drive fails to unmount when I try formatting.
I don't have Apple Hardware Test disc for the MacBook or Apple Service Diagnostics disc for this model. Running TechTool Pro shows hardware to be okay, disk controller onboard the Fujitsu drive is okay, but running SMART & Surface Scan takes a long, long time (which I'm certain will ultimately error out). Running Drive Genius takes a long, long time as well.
    Conclusion:
I think the SATA Controller Cable is defective. I can't think of anything else that would cause disk errors or performance issues like this. Your input is truly appreciated!

Even though no one responded to my post, I thought I'd share the resolution with the entire Apple community. I hope this information will be helpful to some of you with MacBooks or MacBook Pros that may be running painfully slow or may be exhibiting hard drive issues because your machine won't recognize the boot drive or fails to properly boot on a perfectly healthy S.M.A.R.T. verified hard drive. It just might be the hard drive connector/cable. Here it goes...
I visited my local Apple Retail Store and asked a "Genius" at the Genius Bar about this issue and told him my thoughts about a possible failed hard drive connector/cable. First, he didn't even know what a hard drive connector was! Then, he arrogantly stated that he never heard of such a thing and that these cables never fail. Finally, he blatantly dispelled this as a possibility.
On the contrary with my experience, I have had many failed PATA controller cables that required replacement when supporting the desktop PC's at work. I have personally owned and supported many Apple manufactured laptops and desktops and have never encountered this issue on a Mac...until this MacBook!
So, after looking at the Service Manual for the MacBook, I went over to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and purchased the Hard Drive Connector Apple Part #922-7579. I replaced the original cable, reassembled and proceeded to boot the MacBook with the Leopard DVD installer. The Fujitsu drive was immediately recognized and was able to be formatted and Leopard installed without incident. The MacBook boots off the internal hard drive as normal again and works nice and fast again.
Thank you all for your time!

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • I have uninstalled everything on my laptop, removed all my files to my external device and my laptop is still incredibly slow when opening any of the adobe applications, can anyone help please?

I have downloaded the adobe student suite and whenever I open any of the adobe applications my laptop is incredibly slow, I cannot use any other application at the same time and often have to force quit. I have taken all my files off my laptop and added to my external hardrive. Can anyone help please?

What about other non-Adobe programs on the machine - do they also run slowly?
What are your system specifications?  How do they match up to the system requirements for the software?

  • Rendering in Final Cut Pro 10.1.2 is incredibly slow

I just Upgraded to Final Cut Pro 10.1.2 and rendering has become incredibly slow. I am using OSX 10.9.4 on an IMAC with 32GB of RAM on a 3.4GHz machine. In previous version I had absolutley NO trouble. Since my Libraries were upgraded by this version, I am assuming that it is not possible to Rollback to a previous version - is that correct?

Depends. If you have system backups that predate the upgrade, you should be able to restore both the application and the libraries.
What kind of rendering…while working on the timeline or at export?
See what happens if you create a new library and a new project and event and use the same type of media that you have in your other projects?

  • 17" i7 MacBook Pro incredibly slow

My i7 macbook Pro has become incredibly slow. Boot time is well over 3 minutes, bringing up a program (such as Microsoft Word or Pages) takes upto 2 additional minutes. When I look at the activity monitor, it does not appear that the machine is CPU bound--- CPU sits there at about 10-20% utilization at the most. I have a 7200 RPM drive, but it almost looks like it takes a long time to load. I have tried many programs: Disk optimization, DIsk Warrior, Clean my Mac, Mac Keeper.... so I have dedragmented my disk, cleaned all the caches, got rid of temp files, and done basically everything I can do.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? I do not have many programs that I run regularly;; Mainly Safair, Chrome, Microsoft Office, iWork, and Mail.   The vintage of the machine is June 2010.   MacKeeper is saying my machine is at optimized. I have also removed virtualy all the programs that I had at startup including Growl, Flip4Mac.  I have also cleaned my desktop.
Ideas will be appreciated. I am now spending more time on my MacBook Air which is blazingly fast, but I am constrained by the small hard drive and the small screen.
    Thanks,

Says it all right there. Uninstall this P.O.S. software if you can, they don't provide a method neither.
The Mac based Internet wants to crucify these jerks. It's as bad as MacDefender.
Download the free Easy Find here, it allows more deeper of a search than Spotlight, even invisible files. Seek and destroy MacKeeper.

When you first boot your machine and you have no programs open, look for a process that consuming a lot of CPU, it's likely your culprit, you can force quit it.
Look at your System Preferences > Accounts > log-in items for anything your not using and click the "-" to stop it being a log in item.
OnyX will deep system clean a Mac, do ALL the cleaning and maintenance tasks and reboot, it will do it without installing or running anything afterwards, unlike those other programs.

What I suspect is your caches are thrown off by the defrag. Do the OnyX and remove MacKeeper, I think you'll be a happy camper after that.
When you reboot, there should be hardly anything running, your CPU usage should nearly zero.
If all this fails, your looking at backing up your data. Hold c and booting off the installer disk that comes with your computer and using Disk Utility to Erase, format HFS+ Journaled and reinstalling OS X.  Programs from fresh sources and files from backup.
Next time Carbon Copy Cloner your boot drive to a external drive, it's hold option bootable and you can recover/repair, run the computer off the clone or reverse clone if need be.

  • IPhoto is extremely slow after upgrading to OSX Maveric

Has anyone noticed that iPhoto is extremely slow after upgrading to OSX Maverick

    I've noticed that it isn't.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
