IPhoto is on a locked volume

When I bring up my iPhoto it has a message- "iPhoto is on a locked volume".  I know how to look at other librairies by holding down the option>iPhoto to show other libriaries, but still I cannot get to my photos.

Firts, try, if restarting you Mac will solve this.

  • TS3921 iPhoto is on a locked volume, how can i fix it, please

this is the message that comes up when i try to open iphoto, The iPhoto library is on a locked volume. Reopen iPhoto when you have read/write access, or reopen iPhoto with the Option key held down to choose another library. cheers Eddy.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion - couldn't complete as disk corrupt - went through everything - disk utulity, install disk etc. can't be fixed - grey screen - transferring data to macbook pro - unable to transfer photos - says locked volume - help

Hello - tried to upgrade to Lion (software all up to date) could not carry out as disk corrupt - tried to fix using disk utility, no luck, tried through install discs, noluck, screen went grey, went through all the troubleshooting steps advised - could get hard drive button up but wouldn't launch - took the last troubleshooting step (before wiping hard drive) and transferred data to MacBook Pro - all fine except for iPhotos - comes up as "locked volume" - have been through all the trouble shooting steps to all read/write access - file info says I have read/write access- any ideas - otherwise I have lost a bucket load of photos :-(
    Thanks

See this tip if your data isn't backed up:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
In the future always backup your data before updating.

    Hi j,
I don't know if this will work, but I'd try logging in to an admin account, going to your main library (not user library), opening it, opening Application Support, selecting iPhoto, hold down the command key and press i, click on the lock in the lower left, entering the password and making sure you have Read & Write privileges for System and Admin.

What did I do wrong?  I have been downloading all my photos into this same library since Janurary with no problems.

What version of Mac OS X?
Click the black Apple icon on the top left of the screen and select About This Mac. The next screen will show the information.

Right before the coping finished (started with a 40 hour copy time (I know it's estimated), and with about 30 minutes left, a window popped up and said there was a name conflict between the two HD.  Then it  wrapped things up in a minute or so.  We had formatted the new EHD for Mac.  What happened?

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

  • "Library on locked volume" err with DVD or readonly dmg

Not so much a question, but warning to others that you can no longer open any iPhoto Library on read-only media (such as dvd-burned from iPhoto 9.4), or a read only dmg. You get a warning about a "locked volume" and only choice is to quit. True at least since iPhoto'11 (version 9.4.x on 10.8) and with iPhoto 9.5 (on 10.9), even tho the Help and other support docs incorrectly say you can view an iPhoto library on a dvd (as detailed below).
Got a new macbook with 128g SSD, so no room for one huge iPhoto Library that takes 40g. Started a new smaller iPhoto Library as work-around. I was hoping to keep the huge iPhoto-Library read-only: then we could keep a copy on both of the external hard-drives, and no other backup would be needed. But iPhoto actually can no-longer open read-only libraries, such as those burned to a DVD: HT5664 warns you must copy it to your hard drive. Any old info you find saying you can open a read-only library is incorrect: you get a fatal error about a “locked” library. For example, *ALL*  the following are absolutely wrong: PH15265 ( iPhoto 9.5: View photo libraries on a CD or DVD), PH2507 (iPhoto '11: View photo libraries on a CD or DVD),   and Help in iPhoto 9.5 (10.9) and 9.4 aka iPhoto’11 (10.8). The help incorrectly says: "If you’ve burned an entire iPhoto library to a CD or DVD (using the iPhoto burn function), you can view the library in iPhoto without importing all the photos. You can’t make changes to a photo library you’re viewing on a disc, but you can import (copy) photos and albums from it into the current iPhoto library." (Not!)
Since the 40gig iPhoto Library has to be read-write, will try to keep it on a 64gig usb3-ssd (“ssd-on-a-stick” thumb-drive) such as SDCZ80-064G-GAM46 about $44 currently. Note: this is not flash-storage, it literally uses SSD for storage. Should outlast iPhoto, which Apple is phasing out, replacing it with Photo due in 2015, and iPhoto is already gone from ios8 (Sept 2014).
Usually such usb-sticks are automatically excluded from Time Machine backups, so it would need to be included (by removing from list of excluded items.)  And, since Time Machine can fail, for years we’ve also recommended use of an independent backup method called CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). CCC can be scheduled to automatically do a weekly backup the usb3-ssd, when it and the target appear. And CCC can check and warn that iPhoto is not to be run during the backup: this should help prevent corruption of the iPhoto-Library database. The iPhoto-help similarly mentions that Time Machine cannot do a full backup of the library while iPhoto is running.

This is correct and by the way that device is a flash drive. That's what the Amazon page you linked to calls it:
SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive With Speed Up To 245MB/s-SDCZ80-064G-GAM46
Any large capacity flash drive will do the job but remember that it must be formatted formatted Mac OS X Extended, Journaled.

  • Hard drive with iPhoto album comes up "locked"

Attempting to open iPhoto after installing new iTunes.
The library is on another drive. I get the message:
    "CAUTION
"The iPhoto library is on a locked volume.
Reopen iPhoto when you have read/write access, or reopen iPhoto
with the Option key held down to choose another library."
When I open the Info for that drive and unlock its little lock icon, that doesn't work. It stays locked and will not change. Collapsing the Info window and reopening it shows the locked status again.
    What the?

Oddly, it solved itself when I pointed Disk Utility at the offending drive and merely asked it to "Verify Disk". The lockout went away.
    Go Figure.

Unless you have the source files that were on the TC or Windows machine you will have to start over with a new library as follows:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.  Your original library will remain intact for further attempts at fixes is so desired.

  • "Locked Volume" command when trying to download Flash 9 for Mac

    Calling Flash experts!
From yesterday, I've been unable to open the music players on MySpace music pages in Firefox, Safari or Explorer -- every time it asks me to upgrade my version of Flash. Not sure why this should happen now as it was working fine before yesterday and I haven't changed anything. So I've tried to download the latest Flash Player from the Adobe site (version 9 as my Mac is 10.3.9). It opens a "install_flash_player_9.dmg" folder with two files in it, Flash Player.plugin and flashplayer.xpg. However when I click on either of these I get an error message: "The destination folder Adobe Flash Player 9 is on a locked volume." It won't download. If I then try to select an alternative volume I get an error message saying the file does not appear to be compressed or encoded. Stuffit Expander can't open it. Any ideas?

    Here's a solution: see this link - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415443;jsessionid=3D5B36974427A92D43663CE464E9023D.node0?ts tart=1

  • IPhoto 9.4.3 locks up every time I try to do cards or photo books

iPhoto 9.4.3 locks up every time I try to do cards or photo books. Any solutions?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • Iphoto insufficient disk space on volume

    Getting message:
    Insuffucient Disk Space
iPhoto cannot import your photos because there is not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto Library.
Only 1/2 of my hard drive is taken (500G) - how do I increase the space on the volume?
    Thanks!

I received same error when importing a folder with JPEG files in it. My iMac has 450.92 GB free out of 1.11 TB, and I am running OS X 10.8.4 (12E55) on my 27-inch, Late 2012 with 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    iPhoto '11 version is 9.4.3 (720.91)
Also same error when Create Library idea was tried.
Disk Utility verify reports no problems.

  • Can't open iPhoto says it is locked

Here is what comes on the screen: The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it.  I haven't done anythiong except earlier I plugged in my iPhone.  The iphoto screen showed up and I quit it.

Yes, I meant Time Machine.  Bear with me.  I did what you said : hold the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and from the resulting menu repair permissions.  Got the same dialog box as before.

  • How to copy an album in iPhoto 6 from one drive volume to another?

I downloaded some photos into three albums in a drive volume which I later archived for various reasons. How do I import those albums to my primary drive volume with the same iPhoto 6 vers. 6.0.6?
    Is it as easy as:
    File/ Import to Library/ Archive drive-volume/ Users/ Shared/ Pictures/
iPhoto Library/ Originals/ folder year/ Roll#. Select photos to import.
I've not done this before and would hate to run into some "potholes" and unintended consequences.
    Thanks.

I downloaded some photos into three albums
Are you talking about albums or rolls? They are vastly different. The rest of your post sounds like you want to transfer photos from rolls not albums
Basically the safe and correct way is to open the library in iPhoto (if it is not the current library launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and use the select library option and export the photos then switch back to the other library and import them
But depending on what you really mean and what you really want to do it may be different

  • Iphoto says it is locked but it is not

When I try to open iphoto, it says it is locked.  When I get info, the locked box is not checked.
Any suggestions on how to open iphoto?

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later
(In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
