Any ideas as to why iphoto is taking a long time to save edits????? It used to run quickly and now takes forever when exiting out of the edit menu. thanx, jt
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

That's just a visual differentiator so folks can easily tell if it will run on their machine. The difference is the RAM and processor in the iPad 2 and iPad (New). The camera has nothing to do with the physical requirements.

How to edit a original photo saved on my hdd in iPhoto without copying?
I have all my photos organized into folders saved in Pictures on my HDD, and i have unchecked the box in iPhoto which copies them into iPhoto, but what I want to know is how do I edit the original photo? it is edited in iPhoto but not in the original location (that picture is still the old one) i don't really understand why you would want 2 of the same picture, saved in different locations? I want to edit in iPhoto and it change the original! can this be done?? if not what app can?? Thanks!
iPhoto is not a Photo editor. That's what you're looking for. iPhoto will never edit an original file, that's why it's a lossless processor. Photoshop et al are editors, they will change the original file and so are lossy editors. You prefer that way of working so you're best off not using iPhoto at all.

I have made pictures on high resolution with a Canon 100D camera, which means the pictures are 5-6 MB.
But when I edit them on my Ipad2 in Iphoto it decreases the size and resolution of the pictures to about 0.5MB
Does anyone know why Iphoto decreases the resolution of my pictures when I edit them?

Are the photos raw photos or jpeg? When you edit raw photos in iPhoto on your iPad, the raw image will not be processed, only the embedded jpeg. That will reduce the resolution of the image considerably.
But when I edit them on my Ipad2 in Iphoto it decreases the size and resolution of the pictures to about 0.5MB
How do you save he edited version after editing? That will determine, if the image will be scaled down,

iPhoto on a Mac has a lossless workflow. iPhoto will always store the original image file that you imported and compute an edited version from this stored original. The quality of the photo you will see outside iPhoto will depend on the methode you use for sharing. You can export at the original size or scaled down, depending on the purpose you want teh photo for, small for email and web presentation, full versions for printing, for example. -

Why can't I edit LANDSCAPE pictures in iPhoto OR Photoshop?
Help!! Having just returned to the wonderful world of the Mac after years away on a PC, I'm struggling to edit my photos and successfully comprehend the links between the original jpeg files I'm downloading and the thumbnails onscreen.
I'm reasonably technical, a Photoshop user and don't understand why it is that I can't DOUBLE CLICK on a LANDSCAPE picture and edit it...
For some reason, I can't even edit my landscape photos in iPhoto (which I'm resorting to as in a hurry with a particular project)....
Is there some reason why LANDSCAPE pictures aren't appearing in iPhoto's EDIT window? It only display's portrait pictures - all the landscape pics are replaced with a grey window and an exclaimation mark '!'
The pictures are still there, just WON'T OPEN in edit mode in either iPhoto or Photoshop when I double click them (and yes, I have set the Preferences to default edit in Photoshop).
Can anyone help please?

Saving edited images back to iPhoto
I'm having problems saving images in PSE back to iPhoto.
I have set up the preferences in iPhoto (11-for Mac) to use PSE 10 as the editting software. I have also followed Barbara B's guidance on setting the file saving options in PSE10 to 'One first Save' - 'Save over current file'. - but once I have editted an image and I wish to save it (back to iPhoto) I am instead given the usual choices associated with a 'save as...' option. To minimise effort, I then save the changed image to the Desktop and then drag it back to iPhoto.
I know this have been covered before I have read the solutions, but it seems that the changed image it not automatically being imported back to iPhoto.
Perhaps I have not set up the Preferences correctly - any suggestions?If you start the process in iPhoto by hitting the edit button near bottom right, then any changes made in the external editor should update automatically after you save in Elements (Cmd+S) and close (Cmd+W)
The process is not always smooth with raw files but should work with jpegs.
Note, you cant use the editing tool in iPhoto once you set up Elements editor as the external editing app.

When I save a filtered photo from my iphone (filtered with "Tonal") onto my desktop into iPhoto, the filter dissappears and its saved as a standard color photo. Is there a reason why and way I can save it as is?
The reason is that Apple screwed up and despite threads for this issue dating back several months, there is no fix. It's outrageous -- a dozen or so photos that I just took got completely screwed up because of this. There isn't even a way to replicate the effects in iPhoto without major guesswork and tweaking.
I mean this isn't even something that should be an issue. How Apple thought that a user would want his filters to disappear is beyond me. I mean it's so absolutely counterintuitive that I'm baffled that such a destructive 'feature' could've made it through.
So much for Apple's quality control! They'll forever say it's intentional and part of the 'lossless' design where the effects aren't permanently applied, but there should be an option. Some users want their filters to stay when they take them.
In fact, ALL USERS WANT THE FILTERS TO STAY. -
Why do my photos edited in Photoshop cause iPhoto to quit?
I've been using iPhoto for years and in the last few days I can no longer edit or open certain pictures within iPhoto. Everytime I click on photos that have been edited in Photoshop Elements 3, the iPhoto application simply quits. Other photos that have NOT been touched by PE3 open okay. The same happens when I try to view a photo (edited in PE3) full size in the main gallery section (i.e. not in the edit mode). I've edited THOUSANDS of photos in Photoshop Elements 3 and never had this problem until now. It suddenly started about five days ago. I've deleted by iPhoto plist and even reinstalled iPhoto 6.0.4. But nothing seems to work.
I've noticed when exporting photos that the orginal is the same size as state in hte info section of iPhoto - but the one edited in PE3 is much larger (someties twice the size). Is that the added information? Is iPhoto keeping two copies of each picture - the original and the modified version?
Could it be that my Library size is now too large? 16,000 photos and a total library size of 46.7 GB?
I use a Nikon D2x so even the jpegs I shoot are fairly large. I've ordered Aperture 1.5 - will that solve the problem? Or will the same thing happen? My computer by the way is a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 (one fo the first) with 4.5 GB of RAM.

Opening or saving photo attachment; add to iphoto option on save
On my computer, in the Mail application, I always see the "Add to iPhoto" option on the Save button when someone has sent me a photo regardless of whether it is one or several. Does anyone know if there's some way to make this option show or not? I was working with someone on their first version Intel iMac which we had just upgraded to Leopard, and on one e-mail with several photos, the option showed. However, on an e-mail with only one picture it did not. Does anyone know what makes the "Add to iPhoto" option show or not show?
My other question is regarding the contextual menu option "Open with" that shows when I right-click a photo received as an attachment in an e-mail. On my computer, when I right-click and then click this "Open with" option, I see a list of several options for opening the picture, one of which is "Import and View with iPhoto." When I looked at this on the person's computer referenced above, there were no programs listed, only the "other" option which opens a window for you to locate the program you want to use. I did not populate the list on my computer--the choices simply were there when I clicked "Open With." Does anyone know what makes these options appear in this list?
I ask because this person I am helping is not very computer savvy and these are the easiest ways for her to get pictures sent to her into her iPhoto library. I've tried searching Apple support and these boards, but haven't come up with an answer. Does it possibly have anything to do with the version of iPhoto you are running, or is it something to do with Mail? Thanks for any help on this.

Thanks for your response. I took a look at the article you mention and will perhaps try replacing the preferences file mentioned if no other solution comes to light. I won't be able to try this right away as I won't be at the person's house right away. She is the main user of the computer and does have Admin privileges.
She had called me a week or so ago wanting to know how to get a photo someone sent her into her iPhoto library, and when I was explaining how to do it, the options available to me on my computer were not available on hers. So, when I was there yesterday, after upgrading her system to Leopard, I went into Mail and was going to show her how to get the photo into iPhoto. I thought maybe the difference was I already had Leopard and she was still using Tiger. However, the "Add to iPhoto" option wasn't listed on the Save menu in the mail with the picture nor was the "Open With" list populated. However, when I went to another message in her mail with several pictures attached, the "Add to iPhoto" option was there on the Save menu. That got me curious about why these things would be different. Why would the "Add to iPhoto" option show on a message with multiple pictures and not on the message with just one picture? On my computer, I get the message regardless if there is one picture or several in the message.
I see that article you referenced mentions the list getting populated based on programs that are used, so maybe I should try opening various programs and seeing if that gets them added.
Any other thoughts you have would be welcome.

IPhoto sort order changes on iPad/iPhone when photos are edited
I have been having issues getting photos to display in the correct order on my iPad, iPhone and Apple TV. When I go into an event I want the first photo taken to be at the top and the last at the bottom. I sort by date so that photos taken on different cameras at the same event appear in chronological order and this works very well in iPhoto on my Mac. There is a problem when I sync to my devices though. Sometimes the order on my devices is the same as in iPhoto on my Mac and other times it is not. A recent software update seems to have cured the major issue, but created another. After some experimentation I have discovered that editing a photo changes its position in the sort, even if the adjustment has nothing to do with the date.
I picked a sample event and adjusted the contrast of the first photo. There was no change to sort order on the Mac. I hit sync in iTunes and the photo now displays last on my iPhone. Go back into iPhoto, click on "Revert to Original", sync iTunes again and the photo now displays first again. Seems like a bug to me.I also have have the same issue and have been on the phone with Apple Care....not much help I'm afraid although I do believe something is broken and requires a fix. Here is what I have found (all software up to date and latest OS BTW)....I have sorted all my pictures by Date, if I want to add a straggler I just alter the original date and all is well within the event. I then "batch change" the event to the tile and event name. So the pictures in the event are named " Holiday 2012 1-xxx. Again, all is well in iPhoto but when sent to an iPad or Apple TV the sort is as siwilson mentioned above. I just discovered a temp work around for events with less than 1000 pictures, if I sort by Title I can get them to show correctly on the ATV and iPad. Now what was/is interesting is somethimes they would sort correct and sometimes not. It turns out that if you sort the event by Title and quit iPhoto and reopen it....it has reverted back to sort by Date. It does that everytime. So what I do is turn home sharing off in iTunes (forces it to look at the photos again), open an iPhoto event and sort by Title. Then I turn home sharing on in iTunes (leaving iPhoto open) and sync my iPad. If I want ot stream photos to my ATV I must leave iPhoto open so the sort remains as I set it. If I want to retain the correct sort this is what I need to do each time. So this is a bandage for me until they fix things. One final about pictures over 1000.....it sorts them as mentioned above with another twist, numbering goes 0001, 1000, 1001, 1002 etc. @#$% why can't they just sort the way iPhoto presents them?

I need to make space on my Mac. If I copy a folder from iPhoto on to a hard drive, then delete it from iphoto then import it again, does it retain all my editing? It does not seem to retain Faces info and I have spent hours and days naming people
There is no way to export Faces information.
I'm not sure why you would do this:

If space is an issue then move the whole Library to an external drive:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Organise with iPhoto, Edit with Photoshop Elements, but avoid destructive editing
Hi All,
I prefer to use iPhoto as my photo organiser and for sharing to Facebook and Flickr, but I also prefer to use Photoshop Elements (v11) as my editor. iPhoto is configured to launch PSE for editing and it works fine. My question relates to doing non-destructive saves back into iPhoto. It appears as though I cannot have version control because doing a save overwrites the original file in iPhoto. Although I can chose to save an edited version of my image elsewhere on my MacBook I would prefer to have orginal and saved versions colocated. Is there anyway around this issue or do I have to use PSE Organiser to have version control?
I like being able to Flag a bunch of photos in iPhoto, go to the Flagged folder to share them, and the way iPhoto displays shared folders uploaded to Facebook and Flickr. PSE Organiser seems a bit convoluted.
Thanks.Take a look at Aperture - with it you can have versions and many people have reported that its editing is robust enough that they seldom if ever use PS or PSE anymore - maybe that would give you the editing power you wnat with the nondestructive editing of Aperture and version control

Importing images edited in Photoshop into Iphoto

I tend to use Photoshop elements and bridge as my initial repository for RAW format photos. I use Bridge and Elements to select photos for editing, and storing the edited .psd file.
I also create a jpeg copy of the finished file, which I import into iPhoto. However when I do that, iPhoto uses the date that the jpeg was created, rather than the original photo date to organise into events. Any ideas how to get it to use the original photo date, which must be in the EXIF data...
ThanksTry importing the psd file into iPhoto and see if it will retain the EXIF date. That way you can use PSE from within iPHoto to make additional edits as follows:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.

NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.

Unable to see photos edited in photoshop in iphoto
Opened photos in photoshop and edited, then saved as in iphoto changing only the file extension. I am then unable to view edits in iphoto. Using finder, I can see the edited files and can view in preview, yet if I open the mac hd from desktop, I find the directory path listed in finder stops 2 folder short of where the edited photos are.
Path shown in finder = home>pictures folder>i library>modified folder>bridgeday folder>img. If I go to mac hd, I run into a deadend at ilibrary?

Daleyou NEVER make any changes of any sort to the contents of the iPhoto library - this includes saving photos into it
you need to go to the iPhoto preferences and set PS as the external editor - then iPhoto will correctly pass a photo to PS and after editing you save (not save as) to return it to iPhoto where is is correctly places into the iPhoto library and everything is updated
